I'm getting much better at shrugging off Sir Smug's snidy comments about Andy but this one is a cracker:

"Federer feels the players who have pulled out this week perhaps have one eye on the end of season championships and questioned whether Murray and the others would have withdrawn had they been playing at a tournament with significantly higher stakes.

'If it had been the quarter-finals of Wimbledon, would Murray have played? Maybe. I just figured that these are injuries that are just too dangerous to take a chance on and it's smart not to be playing when you don't feel like it's not going to work out to have a chance to win the tournament.'"

Does he really think Andy, having asked for a wild card for the singles and doubles, would have pulled out if there was any possibility of him playing - letting everyone, including his brother, down? He really doesn't like our boy, does he? Perhaps this was designed to cover Fed's huge sigh of relief!!!

Read that report from Fed in The Herald today. Disgusted, why most people think he's a 'nice' person is beyond me. Great player, but unfortunately conceited and smug sums him up for me.

Now that is interesting.... for what is not said of course!
1. Respect for you as always Andy for never belittling an opponent's victory, even though you had very strong grounds for doing so what with the ball changes and not being shown them on the BPs.
2. Valencia did not give a wild card. A 500 tournament not wanting a top four player? Especially with two others already booked elsewhere? Protecting its own? Mad and they may live to regret that for years.
3. Andy not 100% and needing a few days off.

Puts the match result into perspective!

A top player who is a former champion of the tournament!worth mentioning then that three out the four semifinalist the two finalist and the winner where all Spanish, what a pathetic decision by the tournament director

david1610
13-11-2011, 16:26
If Andy by chance, or more probably his agency, had demanded a large appearance fee and the director knew the Spanish presence would sell the tickets, then I can just about understand the decision from a commercial point of view, but otherwise it will come back to bite him now Andy has made it publicly clear he asked but was not offered a wild card, hopefully when the ATP has to reconsider which tourneys get 500 status and which 250 status.
Apart from prestige, btw, what is the criteria? I think we discussed this once, but a tournament like Queen's, given the entry it attracts as preparation for Wimbledon, is crying out to be given 500 status. Unless it is just a financial question and then it might presumably be too expensive for certain 250 tourneys to upgrade to 500 prize money. As I made clear in my long post on the Rankings thread, being a 500 tournament doesn't mean you get anyone from the top four necessarily interested in the tourney - the top four averaged 2 500 appearances and there are 11 available, so even more reason to grab a top four player if you can!

that was a very interesting article in thee Mail, 2 things strike me - andy's insistence on doing more of the same thing, with even more effort, and i'm afraid that he is still hamstrung by a fear of losing. i don't think it is in andy's nature to play with the freedom, to take as much risk as for example tsonga did playing isner

Andy is not alone in this - if you read the biographies of any of the elite players, including Agassi, McEnroe and Nadal, they are all dogged by the fear of losing. They say that the elation of winning is as much about relief at not having lost as having won. He is also damned if he does and damned of he doesn't - he took a risk in the third set tie-break against Nadal at the 02 last year and lost - if he had won it would have been accalaimed as magnificence - because he lost some labelled it foolhardy!

"ANDY MURRAY believes Wayne Rooney's character flaws have helped him become one of the best footballers on the planet.

So the Scot is adamant he can lift a Grand Slam title without ditching his Rooney-like temper tantrums and meltdowns.

The world No.3 has been heavily criticised for his on-court demeanour and the regular rants he directs at those watching in the players' box.

Murray has been told more times than he cares to remember that he needs to sort out his mental approach - with ex-Davis Cup skipper John Lloyd among his biggest critics.

However, the 24-year-old insists he would lose his competitive edge and do more harm than good if he underwent a radical personality transformation."

I know that to reach the top you have to train really hard and make sacrifices, but I think this is going too far. I bet the other top players spent a traditional Christmas Day with their families, though of course they'd have been up early on Boxing morning for training! I do wish Andy would make a little more time for fun, I'm sure it would benefit him in the long run. I know I've said this before, and I'll probably say it again.

It looks to me as if Andy is in the Fed's head and I'm sick of his mind games against Andy every time they might play or are scheduled to play against each other. Being on Andy's home soil makes it worse.

I don't subscribe to the Times, so can't read the website, but on another forum someone has just posted an excerpt quoting Federer:

"I do feel a lot of support and never as strong as right now. I have so many fans so excited to have me come and play because they say they came from such-and-such a place only just to see me or be close. It is incredible. Last week, four ballkids in Paris came up to me and said they have to stop ballboying, they were at Roland Garros in 2009 and in Bercy this time. Two of the girls and a boy started crying because they couldn't be with me on the court any more. I said, "It's OK, come and watch me play some other time." I feel very fortunate for that."

Unfortunately, others obviously have not yet seen the light - see below:

'Federer edged out his competitors in two award categories, respectively selected by fans and ATP World Tour players. The 30-year-old Swiss extended his reign as the ATPWorldTour.com Fans’ Favourite presented by RICOH to a ninth straight year, and won the Stefan Edberg Sportsmanship Award for a seventh time in eight years. Since 2003, Federer has now won 22 ATP World Tour Awards.

“One of the reasons why I play this wonderful sport is for my fans so I would like to thank them once again for their continued support,” said Federer. “It really is so amazing and means the world to me. It’s also gratifying to be recognised by my fellow players for exhibiting fair play on and off the court. The award is named after Stefan Edberg, one of my childhood idols, so it is even more special.”'

"Petty squabbles aside, this tournament has a knife-edge feel to it. The fact that both Greg and Boris are predicting great things for Andy at the 02 and for next season is slightly alarming - really hope it isn't the kiss of death! Perhaps it's just that, at last, they have woken up to Andy's undoubted talents and don't wish to be caught on the back foot when he has a blistering season in 2012!

"Hard to say. But Murray – who opens Barclays ATP Tour Finals campaign tomorrow against David Ferrer – defended himself yesterday, even suggesting that he might be quite chuffed to come up against Federer at the end of the week, and – as he put it – “let the tennis do the talking”."
.......
"Murray was diplomatic on Saturday, describing Federer as “obviously one of the best players ever”, and stressing how much he enjoys testing himself against one of the greats. But he stood his ground too. As he put it, Federer “has never been someone I’ve feared” – and that clearly extends to their verbal jousting."

ESPN (http://www.espn.co.uk/tennis/sport/story/122254.html)- Respectful Murray plays tit-for-tat with Federer
"Murray then dabbled in a bit of tit-for-tat, pointing out Federer's recent success at the BNP Paribas Masters was hardly something to boast about.

"Look at Paris," said the 24-year-old. "Rafa wasn't there, Novak was injured and I was injured. Every week is different. It depends on whether you can play your best tennis. "

There is an article in today's Sunday Times on former British player, Anne Hobbs, who is now a motivational coach in America.
In answer to the question:Who do you most like to watch today? she is quoted:

"Andy Murray. I'm not just being a patriotic Brit, I really do think he's the best player the nation has produced, although I can't say I ever saw Fred Perry play. I see great strengths in Murray's game and he's improved since losing another semi-final at the US Open. At times he seems to have a hard time coping with his feelings and as a mind coach I would love to tell him there is a way for a player to understand their thoughts at any given moment."

"Murray had better hope that the argument has not stirred Ferrer up and left him looking for a convenient punchbag.

Yet the Scot should feel pretty confident of starting his campaign with a win on Monday afternoon. He has beaten Ferrer in all five of their previous meetings on a hard court.

Speaking to Radio 5 Live on Sunday, Murray pronounced himself broadly happy with a season that saw him reach the semi-finals of each of the four Grand Slam tournaments, while also climbing above Roger Federer on the rankings ladder to No 3 in the world.

“It’s been my best year,” Murray said. “Even if you just move one stop up in the rankings, that shows you’re still making progress. It’s when you are going backwards that’s you have to worry.

"I’ve still got a lot of improving to do: a lot of players have had their best seasons at 26 or 27.” "

Poor Andy :grouphug: - he must be so disappointed not only for himself but for all the fans who have bought tickets to see him play. Hope the injury is not serious and that he will now have some quality time and come back at the beginning of January in top form. :swingin:

Mail - (http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/tennis/article-2064831/Andy-Murray-pulls-ATP-Finals.html) Murray flattened: British No 1 pulls out to make sure he'll be ready for the Australian Open

Becker drives me nuts - wants a doctor's report before he believes that Andy should have pulled out, saying he had six weeks to recover and if he was in Andy's shoes he would probably have played. How does he know how badly he is injured - can't he see how gutted Andy is? Where are your brains Boris??

Normally respect others' opinions - but Boris way out of line with his comments earlier. - Very disrespectful to Andy & his team!
You only have to listen to what Andy said to realise how much he wanted to play.

6 weeks?! I know he can't get a time right to save his life, but six weeks?! What a mind.

Yes, his comments so annoyed me too.
Haven't heard him questioning other players' injuries. He's so full of himself that he can't have seen how gutted Andy was -nor did he seem to know that Andy uses the time off for his important training block.

Becker's comments were in response to an e-mailer who had said, 'Djokovic and Nadal always find a way through when they are injured - Murray uses it as an excuse.' Annabel Croft immediately said, 'That's very harsh,' and went on to defend Andy while Becker launched his attack. Am I wrong or did Djokovic not retire from both Cincinatti and Paris this year and Nadal retired during a quarter final match in the Aussie Open in 2010? No-one seems to question their motives. Why would Andy retire unless he is genuinely injured? As far as I know Andy has very rarely retired from a tournament - often continuing to play when he probably shouldn't have.

Annabel Croft now jumping on Becker's band wagon - at the beginning of today's broadcast we had, 'Why was there not a doctor in attendance at the press conference to tell us exactly what is wrong with Andy? That would have stopped any speculation as to whether he should continue or not.' Have you ever seen a doctor in attendance at a press conference? If Rafa or Novak or anyone else says they are not fit enough to continue they are taken at their word - are they suggesting that Andy is not telling the truth about his injury? Croft's parting shot was that she had heard that it was a muscle strain and not a tear so surgery would not be necessary. Would she rather that Andy had played on so that the strain became a tear and surgery was necessary - thus putting him out for the majority of next season?!!!

Sorry for the rant but I have to confess to being exasperated with our commentators - Andy is the best tennis player Britain has produced in 70 years, I just do not understand why they take such pleasure in doing him down at every turn! I might just have to go and have a rant at Sky Tennis!

Epitome of great sportmanship: doesn't drink/party,works hard, represents nation in a respectable way, solid relationship, constant drive to improve & determination to fulfill their goals, quiet life behind closed doors.Hopefully Murray gets the respect he deserves, Henman didn't & he was one of the great athletes to come out of GBR & represented us in a way most sportsmen struggle to do (football/rugby)

Fed should be grateful to have had the lightest case of mononucleosis ever (I don't know, maybe Ancic or Soderling would wish to have a word or two with him about what the bad kind of mononucleosis is) and to have never been hurt or injured enough to have to withdraw to important tournaments.
But one can't have it all. What Nature gave him in term of tennis talent, it took away in term of intelligence.

Btw Tipsarevic didn't say exactly that. In his press conference he said he could see Andy wasn't feeling great (during the practice) but he didn't think back then Andy had a physical problem that would force him to pull out.

They haven't so far. This isn't something new for him. He's been having digs at players for as long as I can remember. Only certain players though - Agassi, Nadal and Andy to name just 3. It does seem that Andy comes in for special treatment. I would bet that neither Andy, Rafa or Novak voted for Federer for the Sportsmanship Award. Fed is as nice as pie to players he doesn't see as any sort of threat.

To be honest nothing he says about Andy comes as a surprise. I really hope that the press are FINALLY realising what a nasty piece of work Federer really is.

Well, she told me that Mr & Mrs Federer Snr had stayed with her a few times during Fed's early career. Well he has missed big tounament because of injury specially in late 2005. Playing the 2005 master was a last minute decision

Here is a transcript from tipsaveric

After your practice on Sunday with Andy Murray, were you on alert, if you like, thinking that perhaps he could be injured and that you might have to play?
JANKO TIPSAREVIC: No. I don't know what did he say to the media. This is the second time I'm hearing this question. But on practice, it honestly never crossed my mind that he could be injured. The only guy who I maybe suspected that might change was Mardy Fish before he played Rafael Nadal. But then when I saw him perform and play I think a good match, at one point I was certain that I'm not going to play.
Regarding Andy Murray, I never, ever thought that he might pull out before we practiced or after the practice.

Q. He had a shortened practice, didn't he, on Sunday?
JANKO TIPSAREVIC: He shortened the practice. But I saw that he wasn't feeling great. I saw him also against David Ferrer. I felt that, you know, he was running okay but he wasn't feeling good on the court. I honestly never thought, you know, that he has a physical issue.
Sometimes players feel tired, whatever. We actually scheduled our practice for one hour. Then we changed it to one and a half. Then we stopped after one and 15. We actually stopped after playing one set.
I honestly never saw that he had any kind of problems on court.

Q. Are you saying you played one and a quarter with him?
JANKO TIPSAREVIC: One hour and 10 minutes. We had a long warmup. One set. After the set, we stopped.
Normally when you play a set, and there is like 10 or 15 minutes left, sometimes if you have a court longer you just stop. But I never thought that he stopped because he has a physical problem.

Is he though? Federer has been having digs at Andy as far back as 2006. Every top player is asked questions about Andy. I doubt our boy likes it very much either. I'm sure I've read before that Andy has more home press journalists following him than any other player. It's hardly Andy's fault that the British journalists always want to ask players an 'Andy' question. Rafa has always dealt with it very well. So has Novak apart from the whole', "What's his ranking, what's my ranking..". That's the only time I felt he was a little annoyed but as far as I'm aware that has been it. To be honest I think Federer is just a nasty piece of work. As far as he's concerned it's all about him. He's just an egomaniac.

Well he has missed big tounament because of injury specially in late 2005. Playing the 2005 master was a last minute decision

He has never had to skip a Slam. He has never had to skip a WTF. It's not toughness, it's just luck (if being healthy is "luck". Maybe it's better say bad luck has never been at his side).
Does he really think players like to skip those events if they can avoid to? Or does he think he cares more and he's ready to do more to play those tournaments than other players?
He said he played with mono. Does he think he's stronger than Ancic or Soderling (or Roddick when he skipped all clay season last year) and they are just weaker people who can't deal with illness?
I find his words unacceptable. I don't even care if they were directed at Andy or not, as a person who had to limit down my competitive sport, I feel offended that him, a person who has never had to do that, to say he plays anyway 'cause he's tough and is able to deal better, unlike others.
