Lovin' the wimby kit - pristine white. The Fred Perry retro wimby kit is still my fave though

Daily Record (http://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/sport/tennis/andy-murray-like-extra-terrestrial-1959506) - Andy Murray is like an extra terrestrial.. he's so good at reading serves, says rival Jo-Wilfried Tsonga

Tsonga said: “Andy is the best returner in the world along with Novak Djokovic.

“The two of them are extra-terrestrials. They make you feel the service box is smaller and that sometimes makes you force things and miss the first service.

“Against certain players I get the feeling the service box grows bigger. The more I serve, the less they know where I am going to put the ball.

“Against them it is the opposite. The longer the match goes on, the more you feel they know where you are going to serve.

“You get the feeling he breaks when he wants to. Back against the wall or not, he makes the break. It is quite impressive.”

CNN (http://edition.cnn.com/2013/06/20/sport/tennis/tennis-andy-murray-ross-hutchins-wimbledon/index.html) - Friend's trauma reveals the man behind Andy Murray's mask

After that, there is the small matter of his wedding at the end of November, at which Murray will be best man.

Murray is taking charge of planning the bachelor party along with Hutchins' brother -- a task he was expecting, according to his close friend.

"I think Andy kind of knew it was coming," said Hutchins.

"When I got engaged I think he knew it was going to be him and then I said to him, 'You know it would mean a lot to me,' knowing how supportive he has been over the years.

"He kind of jumped to it, he was like 'Great, it means a lot to me, let's do it and let me know if you need me for anything else.'

"And he probably says that a lot at the moment and I am using him a lot."

Federer interview with Guardian extract http://www.guardian.co.uk/sport/2013/jun/21/roger-federer-wimbledon
"For me Andy was always tough to play against," he says. "It happened that things went well for me [in the past]. I took the right decisions at the right times. He was playing well for a long time. The pressure of Wimbledon I always knew was going to be hard for him. I thought he was ready to win slams three years ago. He knows that and everybody knew that. He was able to tune his game and have a better mind-set and he started not to struggle against lower-ranked players any more.

"The same thing happened with Novak. That gives them the belief that they are strong when the big guys come around. Nothing really changed for me, I've always had a tough time against Andy. He's just a very good tennis player.""

Such a revealing article. Why? Because various opinions are given by different people all being very clear and straightforward and then we get a piece of text straight out of a public relations manual, which does not really mean anything -
An LTA spokesman said: "We work with a range of partners across the public and commercial sector to deliver free and affordable tennis, and we recognise the valuable work that Tennis For Free do in making tennis more accessible."

they might as well say that their work with tennis players involves them breathing air and we recognise that air is important and we work with a range of facilities which provide access to air.

Mahut is a natural dubs player and has, therefore, some great net play and an instinct for shot placement.
He's tricky, but at Queens just didn't have enough to worry Andy who has an amazing inbuilt instinct of anticipation.. I think Andy enjoys playing this type of player -- remember how much he enjoyed playing Llodra last year.

I mostly agree, but don't forget Andy's loss to him last year. The point is that 99 times out of 100 Andy will beat him, but he is tricky on grass if for some reason Andy is not firing on all cylinders, which can happen during the first week. There are easier first week opponents on grass!

He was always employed by the LTA I believe but had sanction to travel as part of Team Murray and he has a private practice as well as a sports physio. Andy Murray first round

Monday 24 June 2013

Andy Murray gives his Wimbledon press conference following his 6-4 6-3 6-2 first round defeat of Benjamin Becker.

Q. Was that pretty much the perfect first round?

ANDY MURRAY: Yeah, it was a good start. He's a tough player. I thought it was a pretty high standard match, apart from a few games in the middle of the first set.

But, yeah, we had a lot of good rallies. He served well for the first couple of sets. And, yeah, it was a good start.

Q. You looked quite comfortable. How is the back feeling?

ANDY MURRAY: No, the back feels fine. It was fine during Queen's. It was fine in the buildup. So that's a positive. Yeah, body feels good.

Q. Have you got any other rehab tonight or tomorrow extra that you might not have had?

ANDY MURRAY: No. I mean, I always would have treatment after my matches. Also tomorrow I'll have treatment before my practice for 45 minutes, an hour, and also afterwards. I'll have an ice bath when I go back home tonight, yeah, just make sure I stay on top of that, 'cause don't want anything creeping up.

Q. Nothing out of the ordinary?

ANDY MURRAY: No.

Q. The win makes you the most successful British man in Grand Slams ever. Were you aware of that?

ANDY MURRAY: Yeah, I didn't actually know that. Yeah, that's nice. You know, the Grand Slams are obviously the pinnacle of our sport. It's the tournaments I prepare extremely hard for, you know, where you want to try and play your best tennis.

Yeah, I guess that shows I've played some of my best tennis at the slams, and hopefully I can continue that.

Q. Is Rafa's defeat good or bad news for you?

ANDY MURRAY: Again, pretty irrelevant right now. I'm sure for you guys it's very relevant, but for the players, especially me, you know, have to win at least four more matches before that would even become something I would think about.

It's obviously surprising. But, you know, the consistency that Rafa, Roger, Novak have shown in the slams over the last five, six years, it's going to be almost impossible to keep that up forever.

I didn't see any of the match, obviously, because I was playing. But, yeah, it's a surprising loss.

Q. You've said previously that you're now relaxed with the idea that it's possible you'll never win Wimbledon. Realistically the expectations are even higher this year, get higher every year. Is that difficult for you, knowing the weight of expectation behind you?

ANDY MURRAY: I put a lot of pressure on myself. I expect a lot of myself. So the other stuff that kind of goes with it, I mean, it doesn't really matter. It matters what's going on in my head, what I'm feeling while I'm on the court. And I think I've done a good job of putting that other stuff to the back of my head and just concentrate on what's going on out there.

I mean, look, that's going to be there for the rest of my career, something that, you know, all players at the top of the game have to deal with.

Q. You said you fancied a game against James Ward, another Brit. How much do you know about Yen Hsun Lu?

ANDY MURRAY: I know quite a lot about him. I lost to him in the Olympics in 2008 in Beijing. It was a very tough loss for me. I learnt a lot from that match.

I think I've only played him once more. I played him earlier this year in Indian Wells. I saw a little bit of the end of the match today. He's made the quarters before. He's beaten Roddick here. He plays well on grass. So I'll need to be ready.

Q. Were you aware at any time of how Rafa was going on because there were mumbles from the crowd when it came up on the screen?

ANDY MURRAY: You obviously see it. The screen's pretty big. It's right there in front of you the change of ends. Yeah, you obviously hear the noise and stuff.

Yeah, I mean, I was aware of what was going on, but I wasn't thinking particularly long and hard about it when I was on the court.

Q. You say you're surprised Rafa is out. Are you disappointed he's out?

ANDY MURRAY: Uhm, I mean, I'd say as a fan of tennis, it's probably disappointing that he's out because he's a fun guy to watch, and he brings a lot to the tournaments that he plays in. You know, he's one of the best players that's ever played, so it's a shame in that respect.

But I'm not here to worry about all of the other players just now. I just have to focus on myself, my matches, try and take care of them one at a time.

Q. Can I ask you about the documentary yesterday? How did that come about? Did you ever have any doubts about doing something so personal?

ANDY MURRAY: Yeah, well, I mean, I probably got asked to do it about a year ago, and I said no probably for about seven, eight months, I think. Matt, who is in the back of the room, he knows. He was asking me about it. Yeah, I said no a lot. Wasn't that comfortable with the idea.

But, you know, the people that were in charge of it were very, very professional. They weren't intrusive at all. I know Sue well, too. So I felt comfortable speaking to her, even though I cry every time I speak to her (smiling).

But, yeah, I mean, I was told not to watch it. But, you know, a lot of people spoke to me about it today. I think it went over well. So that's good.

Q. Not talking about specifically today, but in general terms when you're trying to focus on your match, a score, for example, if you were in a quarterfinal and the other quarterfinal, which you might play the winner of might be playing on Court 1 at the same time, and the score comes up in the corner, how easy is it to forget about that and keep focusing on what you have to do?

ANDY MURRAY: I mean, almost every single tournament you play, the same thing happens. You're used to that. You know, players are used to, you know, for example if you're in the semifinals here and you play the second semifinal, you know, you're sitting there watching and knowing who you're going to be playing if you win your match.

Yeah, I mean, that's just something that you have to deal with. It's not very difficult to do. I'd say it's harder, you know, if you play in the semifinals and you watch or see the match beforehand. That's probably harder than actually being in a match and seeing what the score is on another court.

Q. I don't know if we missed it, but we've become quite familiar with your hand gestures at the end of matches. Did you do it today?

ANDY MURRAY: No, I didn't. No.

Q. Are you prepared now to explain why you were doing it?

ANDY MURRAY: No. It was just something, yeah, between me and the people that are close to me. That was why I did it. There's no reason for me to discuss that.

But, yeah, I mean, I've celebrated matches in many different ways in my career, so... But, yeah, today didn't do anything.

Q. Can I ask about your Olympic partner, Laura Robson. What do you think her chances are and her chances for future years.

ANDY MURRAY: Of, what, winning the event?

Q. Winning tomorrow, Wimbledon, and in the years to come.

ANDY MURRAY: I have no idea what her chances of winning Wimbledon are. In terms of her match tomorrow, if she plays well, she's definitely got a chance of winning. When she plays her best tennis, she's very, very dangerous for the top players.

I think on this surface, as well, I think it suits the way that she plays.

And, yeah, I mean, the most important thing for her is to make sure that she keeps working hard, you know, setting goals, and trying to continue to improve.

You know, it can be difficult at the beginning of your career, you know, if you have a very good year, players start to take notice of you, coaches start to take notice of you, and will work out better tactics and ways to play against you. That's why, you know, maybe this year she hasn't played as well.

But, you know, she'll keep improving. She's very young. She's got time on her side. And she's a very, very good player already. Just hope she keeps improving.

Q. The side we see of you on court and in here is much more relaxed than you were when you started because you're older and wiser. Are you different away from the court, as well, during Wimbledon? Is it easier away from the court?

ANDY MURRAY: I think this period for me is quite a stressful period. It's also, yeah, a very enjoyable one. I've always enjoyed the grass court season, being around friends and family, being able to go home at night.

Yeah, but there is a certain stress and pressure that comes with that. You know, playing at home, it's just something you've got to deal with.

But I'd say the first couple of times I played here, you know, I was very relaxed and just excited to play because you're not really expecting anything of yourself. You're not expecting to win the event or to go deep into the event.

Obviously, as you get older, that starts to change a little bit. You start to expect more of yourself and it becomes maybe a little bit tougher to enjoy the whole experience.

Q. Great to see Ross in the Royal Box.

ANDY MURRAY: Yeah, it was nice. He was there with his brother. I think Jonny Marray's brother was in there with him, as well. I think Jonny had been asked, but I think he would have had to stay all day in the Royal Box. He obviously needed to train and stuff.

Yeah, it was nice for him to be up there. I'm sure he enjoyed it.

Andy Murray second round

Wednesday 26 June 2013

No.2 seed Andy Murray speaks to the media following his straight sets win over Yen-Hsun Lu.

Q. Would you like to talk us through your match today. How did it go?
ANDY MURRAY: I think it went pretty well. He started off pretty good, and then I think he had a few breakpoints at 2‑All maybe in the first set. Then when I saved them, I started to settle down a bit, and he made a few more mistakes.
But the third set was high quality. I was putting a lot of pressure on him, and he kept coming up with some good shots on breakpoints and stuff like that. So I did well to finish it in three sets.

Q. In the wake of the injury carnage today, how are you feeling? You're fine, aren't you?
ANDY MURRAY: That's sport. You never know. You can pick things up very easily. Obviously when you're playing, when you're practicing, then sometimes guys, you can fall down the stairs, trip over your shoelaces. Who knows. But I feel fine right now.

Q. Can you see any reason there were so many people with so many injuries today?
ANDY MURRAY: I mean, I don't know. I mean, sometimes it's coincidence. Sometimes it can be footwear. Sometimes, yeah, a bit of bad luck. Sometimes it can be court surface.
But I have no idea. I haven't seen all of the injuries that people have had. So I'm not sure.

Q. Have you ever known a day like it at a Grand Slam? Is it sometimes difficult to keep your own concentration or...
ANDY MURRAY: No, I think that's fine. All the players, you have to concentrate on yourself.
I think, you know, when a lot of players get injured, the one thing is you may be a little tentative yourself at the beginning of the matches, maybe not feel that comfortable, you know, throwing yourself around the court. But after the first few games, that normally goes away.

Q. With what's happened today, what may be happening with Roger, as well, one of your biggest battles here is about handling expectation. It's cranking up. Do you feel this might crank things up even earlier?
ANDY MURRAY: I don't know. I think that comes from your guys' end. I don't know what will be written. But I just have to take care of what's going on on my side of the court, practice well, prepare well for the matches, try and concentrate on each one at a time. I've done a good job of that the last few years.

Q. What was your experience of the court today? Was it the same as any other year?
ANDY MURRAY: Court 1 and Centre Court always play a little bit differently. But, yeah, the court, it's a little bit quicker Court 1 than Centre Court, and it's kind of a lot more open. There's a lot of space at the side of the court. But it didn't feel different to previous years.

Q. Do you look at how the draw may or may not be opening up or concentrate on the next game?
ANDY MURRAY: This is the thing. I mean, everybody was so obsessed with how the draw was before the tournament started. Now everybody wants to change their views on it because a few guys have lost.
There's top players still left in the tournament, and there's a lot of young guys as well coming through, guys like Gulbis, Janowicz. Those sort of players are starting to break through and play more consistently.
I'll just concentrate on my next match. I'm playing a tough player, a very experienced guy. Worry about that match.

Q. Having suffered with injury yourself recently, does the condition of the courts worry you at all?
ANDY MURRAY: I mean, I felt fine in my matches, to be honest. But, yeah, I mean, I think some of the players have maybe complained about the courts today. I'm not sure. But I think so.
But no one has said anything to me really in the locker rooms or anything about the courts being an issue. And I felt fine in my matches so far.

Q. Victoria Azarenka said on Court 1 was where she hurt herself. Did you find it any different today?
ANDY MURRAY: I just said, I didn't feel that way in my first match or today. The court felt fine to me.
But obviously a lot of players have been slipping. You know, I don't know what that's down to, like I said at the start. I don't know.

Q. You've played Robredo four times now. What sort of challenge does he pose for you?
ANDY MURRAY: Well, he's a tough player. He had a good win today against Mahut, who has been playing well on the grass. He's very, very experienced. He's extremely fit. He won three matches in a row at the French from two sets to love down. He fights right until the last point.
Yeah, I mean, when he's ‑‑ I mean, last year he had some injury problems. When he's not injured, he's been in the top 20 in the world for a number of years. He knows how to win tennis matches. So it's a tough match for me.

Q. You said you've done a good job of keeping the level head, and it has been noticeable. That's long experience, isn't it, that you've learned how to do that?
ANDY MURRAY: It's just having been around sport long enough. Upsets happen every single day. You can't take any matches for granted. People want to do that often and just write people through to finals or semifinals or whatever. But it doesn't work that way.
You need to be ready for every match. That's just the way that sport is.

Q. Do you think you've ever felt in better form going into the third round of a Grand Slam?
ANDY MURRAY: Yes, probably. It really doesn't matter, because again, every day's different. So, like I said, I played fine the first couple of matches. Just got to prepare properly for the next round. You know, if I do that, practice well, then I'll give myself a chance of winning.

Q. You said when you came off court you were being a bit tentative at the back of the court at the start of the match. What was that down to?
ANDY MURRAY: Yeah, I said at the start that that can happen, if there's a lot of people getting injured or whatever. I don't know exactly why they were. But you're going to be a little bit tentative out on the court. Maybe that's what it was just at the beginning.
After the first few games, I felt fine.

Q. How impressive is it to see somebody like Tommy, 470 in the world when he came back from injury last year, and now he's back in the top 30?
ANDY MURRAY: Yeah, well, he was there through injury. He wasn't there because he was losing tennis matches.
Again, that's what happens. In a one‑year ranking, if you miss seven or eight months of playing, your ranking is going to drop.
As soon as he got himself fit and healthy again, he's going to win matches on the challenger tour, for sure. Then it's just a matter of time when he starts playing matches against the top guys in the world, you know, until he starts feeling comfortable against them, then he'll start winning again.
Yeah, I mean, at his age, it's obviously a good effort to come back from a tough injury. But he's a top player.

Q. How does a match like this stick in your mind when you walk away from it?
ANDY MURRAY: I don't know. Some matches you remember more than others. I mean, I think when I was younger, I probably remembered matches a little bit more clearly. But yeah, now, I mean, if I went through every match I played last year, I wouldn't remember loads about a majority of them. There will be a few that stand out.

Q. Do you think sometimes there's more strength and depth in the men's game than we give it credit for? You were talking about the range of challenges that are out there even when some of the top guys go out.
ANDY MURRAY: I just think that the consistency of the top players over the last, I mean ‑‑ well, for Roger and Rafa it's been about 10 years, obviously Novak for four or five years ‑‑ the consistency has been something that tennis I don't think's really seen before. I don't think that was because of the depth of the men's game or there not being depth in the men's game. I just think the consistency of playing at a high level from the top players has been incredible.
But that is not going to last forever. When guys have slight dips in form, you know, some of the younger guys start to improve and raise their level, then that's going to be tough to maintain for a long period.
There's been a lot of depth in the men's game for a long time. I think it's just now the results are starting to show that.

Love this bit about Dustin Brown in SI's mailbag from yesterday. (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/tennis/news/20130626/wimbledon-maria-sharapova-dustin-brown/index.html)

If you need a window into the brutal finances of a tennis player, consider Dustin Brown, an endearing Jamaican/German -- a cultural 7/10 split -- who impressed in defeating former champion Lleyton Hewitt. With his abundant braids trailing behind him, Brown served and volleyed (kids, ask your parents about this tactic) and was thoroughly comfortable on the grass. He won the first set with a diving volley that should be framed and displayed in a museum. He closed out the match with some of the best shotmaking -- and self-congratulatory reactions -- you'll ever see.

Brown leaked a few tears of joy after he left the court, and spent much of his press conference talking about the financial hardships he's endured. He traveled the European Challenger circuit in camper van. He's barely broken even this year traveling from event to event. In reaching the third round, he's guaranteed at least $100,000, almost double his total 2013 prize money to date.

"It's a pretty big paycheck up to now," he said, "[but] the tournament's not done yet."

Great to see him doing well here - finally - and getting a nice fat paycheque as well.

Andy Murray. The Scot’s formal introduction to the British general public came at the 2005 Wimbledon Championships when he led David Nalbandian, a former finalist, by two sets to love. Nalbandian would come back to beat Murray in five sets, but Murray had already done enough to show he had great grass-court talent.

This was a high-level match. I thought I struck the ball really well from the start. I went for it. I had a lot of winners tonight [40], and I hit the ball better from the back of the court. - not lacking in confidence is he?

The article on Fabio was followed by this paragraph:

For those who don’t know him, Josh Goodall is a British player who has struggled to make it to the top tier of the Tour despite years of battle and no shortage of effort. Goodall’s highest ranking was 184 in 2009 but at the age of 27, and his ranking now 312, he remains the sixth-highest player in the country but on Friday, he announced, via Twitter, he is considering retirement. He says he will continue playing until the right offer, perhaps in coaching, comes in. Goodall is an example of how tough it is to make a living out of the Tour at the lower levels, having earned $418,289 in nine years as a professional. He was forced to advertise on LinkedIn for sponsors and it seems he has decided enough is enough.

Wimbledon (http://www.wimbledon.com/en_GB/news/interviews/2013-06-28/201306281372448688568.html) - Andy's 3rd round press conference

Friday 28 June 2013

Andy Murray's press conference after his talks to the media after his 6-2, 6-4, 7-5 win over Tommy Robredo

Q. What's it like when you're playing as well as that against a tough guy?

ANDY MURRAY: Yeah, well, I mean, every set got tougher. I think he started to feel much more comfortable around the middle of the second set. He obviously had a breakpoint chance at 5‑4 in the second. He got quite tight around that period.

I mean, I hit the ball really, really well from the back of the court tonight from the first game, and that was pleasing because I served well the first couple of matches but maybe hadn't hit the ball quite as I would have liked.

But playing under the roof, it's a bit easier probably to time the ball because there's no wind or anything. So it was a good match.

Q. Two sets up, were you aware of Robredo's reputation for coming back and winning five‑setters?

ANDY MURRAY: I mean, he's an extremely fit guy. He works very, very hard and fights for every single point. I mean, you know, the reputation came only from a couple weeks ago. It wasn't something that he was known for. It was just an amazing achievement at the French Open what he did. I don't think it had been done for a long time.

It's more what I read into it is he fights for every single point and you need to be ready for that. Doesn't matter what the score is, he's going to chase balls down and make it very difficult. And I was ready for that.

Q. You tweeted earlier in the day that you weren't that keen on the roof, or you missed not having the roof. Does it make a big difference being under the roof?

ANDY MURRAY: Yeah, it changes the way the court plays, for sure, yeah. I mean, anyone will tell you that. If you play on an outdoor hard court compared to indoors, it's just different conditions.

Until, you know, they put the roof there, we're used to playing on indoor hard courts and indoor clay sometimes, but never on indoor grass. So it's very, very different.

That would have been ‑‑ I'm sure Tommy, I mean, he's in his 30s and would never have played on indoor grass before. So it's just different for everyone.

Q. Quite useful to get a match under the roof, not like you can go out there and practice in those conditions, is it?

ANDY MURRAY: Well, no, you can't. But, yeah, I would rather there was good weather and we played without the roof. It's an outdoor tournament. It's better if we get to play outside.

Q. You've been made aware of the fact we're all getting ahead of ourselves with some of the early exits of fancied players. Is there even a part of your heart that lifts when you see Rafa going out, Federer going out, or do you not allow yourself to think about that?

ANDY MURRAY: I mean, I think there's a lot more pressure on me now with them being out. I mean, I don't read the papers and stuff. But there are papers in the locker room, so you see some of the headlines and stuff. It's not that helpful (smiling).

But, yeah, you need to be professional enough to not let that stuff bother you and just concentrate on each match. I think I did a good job of that today. I played well, my best match of the tournament so far.

Q. The Davis Cup coming up against Croatia. Can you share some thoughts and compare the teams between 2007 and teams this year?

ANDY MURRAY: Yeah, completely different teams except for me and Marin probably. I think we played here. I think I won against Marin in five sets that day. I think Ljubicic had kidney stones during that tie.

But, I mean, they obviously probably have more depth than us. But, you know, we have a couple of singles players that have won matches in Davis Cup beforehand, and we have a very good doubles team.

So it will be an interesting match. A tough one, but one that we can win.

Q. Serena said she would like to play you. How realistic do you think the chance of that match is?

ANDY MURRAY: I have no idea. It depends if people would actually want to see it or not really. That's what it would come down to.

Q. Would you try and make it happen?

ANDY MURRAY: It's not something I'm really going to push extremely hard to try and set up. I don't think it would prove much for either of us.

But if people would want to see it, then I would do it.

Q. You've got the weekend off now. What are your plans between now and Monday?

ANDY MURRAY: I'll probably practice a bit longer tomorrow. Normally on the days off you practice for maybe an hour. But I'll practice, I would have thought, about an hour and a half tomorrow. Have a slightly tougher practice session. Then Sunday we'll be back to the same sort of schedule.

I haven't played that many times on the Friday at Wimbledon, so it's a little bit new for me. I think maybe only once, maybe twice, in seven or eight years here. But, yeah, I'll just try and stick to the same sort of schedule. I think the guys meant to be playing today got canceled so I'll try to watch a little bit of that tomorrow if the timings work out.

Q. Are you happier it's worked out this way for you this year? Do you prefer that?

ANDY MURRAY: I don't really know. I mean, the guys I'm playing will have had two days off now, and then will have one day off. I mean, I have no idea whether it makes any difference.

Andy Murray talks to the media after his straight-sets win over Tommy Robredo

You know, Roger always played on Monday. He had a pretty good record here. But I don't know if it's got anything to do with the two days off over the weekend.

Q. Back to Davis Cup in September, how much will the fact that it will be played on clay make things difficult for you and the British team?

ANDY MURRAY: I think, yeah, it will be difficult. It's probably my worst surface. But also I don't think it's Marin or Ivan Dodig's best surface, either.

I'll have to see. I've played Marin before on the clay at the French Open and won. But, I mean, Davis Cup's different. I'm sure it will be a tough match. It will be very close.

Q. Keith was down with his guitar today. I wondered if you managed to catch up. What do you think of it?

ANDY MURRAY: What do I think of it, the song? I think it's good. I mean, he's got a good voice. I mean, I've known him since I was 10 or 11 years old probably. But, yeah, I haven't had the chance to catch up with him today. I've obviously been busy and just finished now.

But, yeah, I hope he's enjoyed the last few days. Hope it was quite nice for him.

Q. To what extent do you think we've seen the benefit you've had of practicing extra time on grass?

ANDY MURRAY: I don't think the way I'm playing has anything to do with that extra time. I mean, normally by the time Wimbledon would come round, I felt pretty good coming into the tournament most years.

I think it helped me at Queen's, for sure. But, like I said, I'd much rather have been at the French Open than laying around for 10 days doing nothing. I would have much rather been there than hitting on the grass.

Q. Share a couple words about Youzhny and Troicki.

ANDY MURRAY: Youzhny, I think I've only played him once on the tour maybe. I think only once. But he's a very good grass court player. He was in the final in Halle. Had a very tight match with Roger there. Pretty sure he's been in the quarters here. He's been in the second week numerous times. He likes the courts. He's a very talented guy.

Troicki, I've had some good matches with him in the past. I played well against him. I know his game well. I actually played him here, I think, a few years ago, as well. But he started to play a lot better. He didn't play so well last year, but he's having a much better year this year. He changed coaches. He's a good player. He's extremely quick around the court.

The reaction for the armed forces and Murray were brilliant love the peoples warmth towards him. Obviously something we all have felt for him for many many years!

was lucky enough to go to Wimbledon after all yesterday and had tickets on Centre Court, I couldn't believe it when Sue said "have I forgotten anybody" and then announced Andy, he got a standing ovation from the crowd, we were seated not to far from the Royal Box and after the ceremony quite a few of the Olympians wanted to have their photos taken with Andy. We went to tea when Stosur was on and got talking to a young man who was in the Navy and was policing the Members area of Centre Court, he then got out his phone and showed us a photo of him and another Steward with Andy he said he had asked Ross to take the photo so obviously Ross was with Andy. Had a lovely day though quite tired today.

BBC - (http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/tennis/23118013) Andy Murray & Laura Robson set for Wimbledon fourth round

Tennis Space (http://www.thetennisspace.com/diary-who-is-the-most-popular-player-at-wimbledon/) - Diary - - Who is the most popular player at Wimbledon?

IBM have been keeping an eye on who most people are tweeting about and apparently 1.4 million tweets have been posted and analysed by them. Interestingly, Rafael Nadal is the most talked about player, despite going out of the Championships in the first round. At the time of writing, the Spaniard had been mentioned 108,595 times, beating Roger Federer into second (84,385) and Andy Murray (73,569). On the women’s side, Maria Sharapova tops the list at 59,240, with Britain’s Laura Robson, with 41,896 and Serena Williams third on 40,110.

But Andy Murray has the highest percentage of positive mentions, with 37 percent positive, 52 neutral and 11 percent negative. But Murray has to bow to Robson in terms of popularity, with 44 percent giving her support.

Wimbledon (http://www.wimbledon.com/en_GB/news/interviews/2013-07-01/201307011372708114766.html)- Andy Murray press interview after beating Youzhny

Andy Murray's press conference after his 6‑4, 7‑6, 6‑1 victory against Mikhail Youzhny.

Q. The Friday night crowd was more raucous than tonight's crowd. Did you want to get them on your side more today than usual?

ANDY MURRAY: No, that wasn't the case. I just think there was more ups and downs in this match. You know, I was pretty pumped up, especially after I won the second set, because I came back from 5‑3 down in that tiebreak and played four very good points to get that set.

It was an important set, as well, because obviously I was up a break, then down a break. He served for the set. Then I had chances to break at 5‑All.

You know, there was a lot of to‑ing and fro‑ing. That was a big set to win. Yeah, it was good to get the crowd into it in the end.

Q. Mikhail said he thought you lost focus in the second set. Would that be your answer, as well?

ANDY MURRAY: Yeah, maybe a little bit. Yeah, I mean, that's the thing with grass court tennis. I mean, if you watch the games, I missed a couple of shots in the tape. I lost a few challenges. He hit a few balls on the line. Yeah, it turned around pretty quickly.

But luckily I managed to get it back in time.

Q. You had to dig a little deeper this time. Do you regard these slightly tougher matches as good practice for upcoming fixtures?

ANDY MURRAY: Yeah, I think all the matches are going to keep getting tougher. Everyone is going to be more comfortable with the conditions than they are at the beginning of the week.

You don't fluke at getting into the quarterfinals of a slam. You know, you need to win four tough matches to get there. So everyone is playing well now, and it's going to keep getting tougher.

Q. Quite a while since your match finished. Have you required extra treatment for anything?

ANDY MURRAY: I had probably about 20 minutes longer treatment than I had done the last few days. But I just want to make sure this tournament that ‑‑ yeah, I'd love to be able to come in here 10 minutes after my match. It's easier for you guys. But I need to make sure I do all the right things, like ice bathing, having my massage, and taking care of my body. Obviously, a few weeks ago I missed the French Open. I don't want it to be a case of, you know, things creeping back up on me. I want to take care of my body. It's my main priority this tournament.

Q. Nothing to worry about?

ANDY MURRAY: No.

Q. How much pressure do you feel right now coming towards the end?

ANDY MURRAY: Do you want it in words, a number, percentage?

Q. A number.

ANDY MURRAY: Seven or eight probably. I mean, there's always pressure coming into this event. Yeah, I mean, playing at the latter stages of Grand Slams is what you play the game for, and that's where there's the most pressure.

So it builds obviously with each match.

Q. You said in your post‑match TV that you actually felt calmer in this match than the previous rounds. Any reason why that was?

ANDY MURRAY: Uhm, I just think the nature of how the tournament's gone, there was a few days there where, yeah, it was just strange. I think everyone was a bit on edge, a little bit uptight because of what was happening with the injuries, withdrawals, upsets and stuff. Obviously Serena losing today is a major shock, as well.

So, yeah, it's just been maybe the last couple of days after Friday, you know, a little bit more relaxed over the weekend, and you have a little bit more time to think about things and just prepare. Yeah, I just felt a little bit calmer before the match today.

But there were some very tense moments, especially in the second set. Also having played indoors in the last match and moving outdoors, it's different conditions as well. So I had to adjust to that, too.

Q. Athletes often say they learn more from losses than wins. Just wondering, do you subscribe to that theory? If so, what in your experience has brought you to that conclusion?

ANDY MURRAY: Uhm, I mean, it's a tough one. I think you do learn a lot from losing. I'd lost enough big matches to want to win one and learn from how I managed to win a major event.

But I think that saying is just kind of a way of maybe trying to motivate you or try and find ways to improve from losing tough matches.

The one thing I would say from having experienced it is just, yeah, I kept trying to work harder and harder, try and keep improving my game from losses. That's why I eventually managed to sort of get over that final hurdle.

But I think you can learn a lot from both, from losing and from winning big matches.

Q. What is your perception of the current British men's tennis?

ANDY MURRAY: Well, there's not too much depth just now. That's pretty clear. That's really it. I don't really have any more thoughts about it. I would like there to be more players, you know, in and around the top 100, playing in the bigger events, but it's just not the case just now.

Q. Novak said after his last match that he thought it was good for the game that we've seen different people coming through, there will be different names in the quarterfinals. Do you agree with that?

ANDY MURRAY: I mean, I don't know. It's what everyone else wants to see really. I think in the last few years people have enjoyed seeing some of the matches between some of the best players that have ever played the game.

So long as the quality of tennis stays the same, it's not like the level of tennis is going down, then, yeah, it can be good for the game because the more players competing for the major tournaments, the better.

Q. You're the last Brit left in. I know this is a familiar thing for you at a tournament. It means that the whole nation, there's nobody else to deflect the pressure from you as we enter the second week. Is that something you actually enjoy all the extra pressure being heaped on you rather than rebelling against it?

ANDY MURRAY: No, I think I've dealt with it well over my career. I mean, I've played well at Wimbledon. It's been consistently my best slam over the course of my career.

So, you know, that's partly down to the surface and partly down to, yeah, enjoying playing in front of a home crowd and being able to kind of block everything else out.

But, yeah, there is pressure there. Yeah, it's a stressful few weeks. You know, it's one of the biggest tournaments of the year for us. I work extremely hard to give myself the best chance to do well here.

Q. Outside of your circle, do you think there's an assumption out there that you will make the final and possibly a lack of understanding of the hard work that you have to do to do first?

ANDY MURRAY: I don't know because I don't read everything that's getting said. You know, obviously I'm not out and about on the street speaking to people about the tournament. You know, I'm with the guys that I work with. I talk to them about each match individually. We don't get ahead of ourselves because you can't afford to do that.

That's why there's been so many shocks here, because the level of tennis is high. There's a lot of tough, tough opponents left in the draw. Mikhail was one of them today. He's a tough, tough player. I was very close to losing the second set there, and it can be a completely different match, so...

I don't know what everyone else is saying, but I'm not getting ahead of myself.

Q. Speaking to one former player who said to me at the start the tournament that if you told Andy Murray he'd be facing Verdasco in the quarterfinals, he'd be happy. Would he be right?

ANDY MURRAY: Who was that?

Q. Barry Cowan.

ANDY MURRAY: Yeah, I don't really know what to say about that, to be honest (laughter).

Verdasco is a very, very good tennis player. Very good at tennis. He's playing very well this week. He's extremely dangerous when he's on his game. Yeah, that's it. I mean, Verdasco's a very good tennis player.

Q. Can you talk about the particular challenge that Verdasco poses and where you're going to turn, I presume, for practice against lefties?

ANDY MURRAY: Yeah, we were actually talking about it a few days ago. I haven't played a left‑hander the whole year, which I think is pretty amazing six months into the year. So, yeah, I'll try and get a lefty in to serve at me tomorrow.

I don't normally mind the way the ball comes off the racquet from the back of the court. I grew up playing with my brother. So that almost feels a bit more natural to me than a righty. But it's just the serve is what's different and the way you move on the return that's different. I'll have to make sure I hit a lot of returns tomorrow.

Q. Who do you think will be the No. 1 at the end of the year?

ANDY MURRAY: I have no idea. I mean, it depends on a lot of things, you know, if everyone stays healthy. This tournament I would have thought would have a pretty big impact on that.

But, you know, Rafa's very, very far ahead in the points. Well, he's much further ahead of me. I think he's got over double the points that I have this year.

So, yeah, I mean, I would say Rafa and Novak would be the favorites, you know, because the last couple of months I had, unless I was to win here and the US Open, then I don't have much chance of finishing at No. 1.

Q. I think this is Verdasco's first Grand Slam quarterfinal for about three years. Are you surprised that he's maybe had the dip that he had?

ANDY MURRAY: Yeah, I mean, a little bit. I lost to him at the Aussie Open a few years ago in the fourth round. He went on to have that great match with Rafa there. He was playing unbelievable tennis. Then, yeah, I think he made the Masters Cup. I played him in the Masters Cup, as well. He can play well on all the surfaces. It's just the consistency hasn't been there.

Yeah, it isn't easy to stay at the top of the game for a long time. It's hard. It takes a lot of concentration, hard work and focus, also a bit of luck as well. He's had a few injuries. He's changed racquets quite a few times. That will have had something to do with it.

Q. Can I clear something up, please. I noticed you holding your side during the match. You seemed to wince a couple of times. Is that anything to do with the back injury you have had, or is there any cause for concern?

ANDY MURRAY: No, there's no cause for concern. My back is what it is. It's felt way, way better than it was a few weeks ago.

Yeah, I mean, there's a few times on the court where you feel things. You just have to find a way of managing those issues and getting through them 'cause, you know, a lot of guys have had problems during this slam especially. A lot of guys have had trainers on court and whatnot.

So everyone's got little niggles and stuff. You just have to manage them and get through it.

Q. How much pain would it take to put you out of this tournament?

ANDY MURRAY: I wouldn't stop. Now that I'm playing, there's no chance I would stop, I mean, unless I couldn't hold the racquet.

Q. Is this the most domineering you've felt at Wimbledon?

ANDY MURRAY: No. I mean, I played well in the first week of Wimbledon before. You know, even last year, as well, I felt pretty good during the first week. In other slams, as well, I've got through to semis before without losing a set.

But, yeah, I mean, each day's different. I felt good so far. I played some good matches. Today was a tough one. It was the toughest test for me, and I came through it well. It will be a different challenge on Wednesday. I'll get myself ready for that and hopefully play well.

Q. One of the first things you mentioned when you came off court was that you saw Serena lose, that sort of got you more thinking that everyone has to be prepared. How much in general do you think what happens on the women's side, players on the men's side, and vice versa, does it affect the atmosphere of a joint tournament like this?

ANDY MURRAY: Yeah, I don't know how much it affects. It certainly doesn't affect the results on the men's side. You know, upsets and stuff can influence results on whatever half of the draw, certain players getting through that you may not have expected to.

But, yeah, I mean, when someone like Serena loses, she's won, what, 37 matches in a row or something, I don't know, but she hasn't lost for a long time. So for her to lose at Wimbledon in the fourth round, especially a match where she'd sort of come back, had a lot of chances, it's surprising.

When those sort of results can happen to a player as good as her, there's absolutely no reason why it can't happen to me. That's why I'm not getting ahead of myself, and no one else should.

Andy full Playlist includes..

1. Longview – Further
2. John Mellencamp – Jack & Diane
3. John Mellencamp- Small Town

Andy Murray's love of sushi is such that after every one of his matches at Wimbledon, he has the same order — 30 tuna and avocado rolls — made up by the Japanese and South Korean chefs working in the sushi kitchen on the players’ lawn.

The £30 Japanese takeaway — £1 per roll — is not shared around Team Murray, but is all guzzled by Andy himself, whose training diet often takes in as many as 50 pieces of sushi per meal. The mixture of protein and carbohydrates is seen as ideal for muscle recovery and would have been especially needed after his five sets yesterday.

Wimbledon (http://www.wimbledon.com/en_GB/news/interviews/2013-07-03/201307041372934084266.html)- Andy's quarter final press conference
Wednesday 3 July 2013

Andy Murray’s press conference after his 4‑6, 3‑6, 6‑1, 6‑4, 7‑5 victory against Fernando Verdasco.

Q. How long does it take you to recover physically and mentally from an effort like that?

ANDY MURRAY: Uhm, well, it depends. Providing I'm able to do the right things to recover properly, then you can feel decent the next day. You know, the thing with grass court tennis is the rallies around that long.

But today I did put a lot of, lot of effort into chasing every single ball down. I was, yeah, doing a lot of widths of the court.

I have no idea. I actually feel pretty good just now. I don't feel too bad. But it's normally the following morning when you'll feel it most.

Q. How would you describe the situation you were in and how you were able to come back?

ANDY MURRAY: Yeah, it was a tough situation. The second set was a bad set of tennis for me. I was 3‑1 up and then made some bad mistakes, poor choices on the court. Then I turned it round really well after that.

Q. How?

ANDY MURRAY: Thought about what I was doing wrong and the best way to get myself to get back into the match. Changed tactics a little bit. Was more patient. Took a bit longer between points. Didn't rush and didn't get him any free points after that.

I gave too many free points away in the second set. I thought the first set was a good standard and we both played some good tennis in that first set. You know, he came up with some good shots in the last game of the set.

But second set I was making way too many mistakes.

Q. You know that Fernando has a lot of firepower and is a great player. Were you surprised by how he served in the match, particularly his second serve?

ANDY MURRAY: Yeah, he really went for it and he served extremely well. I mean, I wouldn't say I was surprised in terms of the pace he was serving at because, you know, you can check the stats from the other matches and he's been serving big the whole tournament.

A lot of serves very close to the line on big points. It wasn't like he was sort of ‑‑ when he was breakpoints down on second serves he wasn't slowing it down or going for the middle of the box. He was going out the lines and came up with some huge serves on big moments throughout the whole match really.

Q. Alex Ferguson crashed your press conference at the US Open. Have you had a chance to talk to him yet?

ANDY MURRAY: No. Just got off the court a few minutes ago, so I haven't seen anyone yet. Just the guys. I was on the bike and then was about to start treatment before I came up here.

Q. He's famous for coming back from two‑nil down at Manchester United. I saw tweeting that your win is a bit like Fergy time. Can you appreciate that is a similarity?

ANDY MURRAY: Yeah, I think when you play more and more matches and gain more experience you understand how to turn matches around and how to change the momentum of games.

That can be tactical; sometimes it can be your opponent. But, you know, often you need to be the one making the change. Maybe when I was younger, you know, I could have lost that match.

But I think I've learnt, yeah, how to come back from tough situations more as I got older.

Q. Young Kyle Edmund has been training with you lately. How do you rate his progress at the moment? Will you be talking to him at all in the next couple days and will you be talking to him about Jerzy Janowicz?

ANDY MURRAY: I know Janowicz pretty well. I played him a couple of times. I followed him a bit this year.

Yeah, I've hit with Kyle quite a few times. He's a hard worker. You know, he wants to be a professional tennis player. He puts in the effort on the court and in the gym. That's one of the most important things.

So if he keeps doing those things right, he'll give himself the best chance of becoming a very good professional tennis player.

Q. No surprise to you, but Verdasco's forehand, sometimes to watch him from afar looks like a force of nature. What was it like playing against that today?

ANDY MURRAY: The serve for me was trickier than the forehand. I mean, there's a lot of guys on the tour that have, you know, big forehands and big strokes. I didn't find the forehand as hard to deal with as the serve.

He served extremely well, and, because of that serve he's able to dictate points with his forehand. Once I was able to get into the rallies and return a bit better and stuff I was able to sort of take away the power or strength of his forehand.

But when he was serving well he could serve and dictate the points with his forehand. When he's doing that, he's incredibly tough to beat.

Q. How much does it help to know that you've come back from that situation a number of times before?

ANDY MURRAY: Uhm, I mean, I guess it helps. If you've never done it before ‑‑ you know, if you haven't done it before you don't know exactly what it takes and how to turn it round.

Like I was playing there, the more times you're in those positions and the more times you can come back, you understand the way you need to think and the way you need to sort of negotiate your way through the last few sets.

Did a good job with that. You know, sometimes it can be easy to get back to two sets all. The fifth set, the final set, often the guy who won the first two comes back and wins that one. It's normally the toughest set of the three to win.

I was expecting it to be tough and hung in well.

Q. Obviously a lot of interaction with the crowd. The crowd was very passionate. Do you remember any snippets or reactions that you retain now that struck you while you were playing?

ANDY MURRAY: No. I just think it's a great atmosphere, you know, at the end of the match to be playing in. I love it when it's like that. It was extremely noisy. They were right into it pretty much every single point.

That's kind of what you remember. It's not one point really; it's more just the atmosphere of the entire match. It was good today, especially when I went behind.

Q. Was it better to actually have gone through a big fight like that rather than breezing straight through?

ANDY MURRAY: No idea. You never know. The next match will be different to the one today. Who knows? Some of the guys have gone through, like Novak I don't think has lost a set yet. I'm sure he's pretty happy with where his game is at just now.

I'm happy to be in the semis. Regardless of whether it's been five sets or the first matches were in three sets, it makes no difference.

Q. There's been talk about David Cameron having tweeted you this morning and the so called curse of Cameron, which I think sort of spooked the country a bit. Is that something you were aware of? How superstitious are you about things like that?

ANDY MURRAY: No. What he tweets has absolutely zero bearing on the outcome of my match today ‑ zero at all. It's nice to get messages from the prime minister, but whether I win or not, his tweet has no bearing on that at all. That's just people trying to make a story out of nothing.

Q. You obviously get quite frustrated with yourself at times. I think you were caught on camera calling yourself a horrible name. How hard do you find it to balance that frustration and calm yourself down and get yourself back into the match?

ANDY MURRAY: I think, again, I'm much better at doing that now than I was in the past. And, yeah, it's something you learn with playing matches and with age, being more mature. That's it.

Obviously a lot of players get frustrated on the court, but you need to try and find a way to respond and not get too down on yourself. Providing it's, you know, for a point or two points. But it shouldn't be affecting me for three, four games at a time.

It may have done in the past, but I don't think that's the case anymore.

Q. At the end of the second set when you lost the three breakpoints, you were quite frustrated and you pointed at the sky and said something or asked something of yourself, perhaps. What was it?

ANDY MURRAY: I don't recall that. Sorry. I have no idea. It wasn't intentional. I don't know. I might have been saying something about what I should have done in the last game or whatever, but I wasn't praying or anything like that (smiling).

Q. Was there a point when you were genuinely worried you were going to go out of the tournament, or does your brain not work like that?

ANDY MURRAY: Yeah, you're obviously concerned. You're more concerned about losing the match, not thinking so much that, I'm going to lose at Wimbledon. You're concerned how the match is going and that you may lose.

But, again, when you've been in that position a lot of times you know how to think through it and not get too far ahead of yourself.

I definitely didn't rush when I went two sets to love down. I slowed myself down, if anything, and that was a good sign.

Q. What kind of match do you expect against Jerzy Janowicz, who has a different game?

ANDY MURRAY: It will be a very tough match. He has a big serve. He's a big guy with a lot of power. He also has pretty good touch. He likes to hit dropshots. He doesn't just whack every single shot as hard as he can.

It will be a very tough match. He's played extremely well here, I think. He had a tough match in the last round against Melzer, but apart from that he's been pretty convincing. He's a tough player.

Q. Have you noticed the crowd being more confident in you this year than in years past? Maybe chalk that up to you having won the US Open and the Olympics? Seems like there's less pessimism sometimes, even when you're down in the match.

ANDY MURRAY: I don't know. I mean, I try not to think too much about the reactions and stuff when you miss shots or whatever.

But today when I went behind, the crowd definitely got right behind me and made a huge, huge difference. You know, if they can be like that from the first point to the last in all of the matches, it makes a huge difference.

Q. What were you talking to the umpire about during the match? What was the distraction that kept occurring during the match?

ANDY MURRAY: When I served at whenever it was, 3‑All or 4‑3 down, 15‑Love, just as I threw the ball up there was a guy in the crowd taking pictures with the flash. So that was what I asked him to stop.

I don't know what the other distraction was, but I think it may have been one of the lines judges moving his chair when Verdasco was serving. The umpire heard it and I heard it. We didn't know exactly what it was, but I assume that's what it was.

Q. The common line I think is since you won the US Open you would have less pressure or whatever coming in here, it would feel different. Now that you've gotten this far, does it feel any different, or Wimbledon, is it the same circus for you and pressure as before?

ANDY MURRAY: I think it's pretty much the same. Not a whole lot's changed.

I mean, for me, I mean, I know if I had to finish my tennis career tomorrow, I'd be content that I won the US Open. But, you know, I also wanted to try and win more. The fact I'm still playing, giving myself an opportunity to play in the latter stages of these events, I want to try to win them.

The pressure's still there. I put a lot of pressure on myself.

Q. Your mum previously said that Verdasco is a player she admires. Was it difficult playing one of her favorites?

ANDY MURRAY: No.

Q. Were you particularly nervous at all today? Was that a factor in the second set?

ANDY MURRAY: No, I didn't think I started the match nervously. I thought I started the match well. I played a good first set. I created quite a few chances on his serve.

Maybe didn't play the best game when I got broken, but he also did come up with some good stuff.

But in the second set, again, I was up 3‑1. I wasn't nervous a set down and 3‑1 up. I just started making mental errors, made some bad mistakes. That was it. Rather than nerves, I think I just didn't play a good second set.

BBC (http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/tennis/23186104)- Andy Murray: Former coach Miles Maclagan hails 'hungry' Scot

"It was typical Murray in some ways," Maclagan told BBC Scotland. "How many times have we seen his matches go to the brink?"
.......

"I've noticed it with Andy these last couple of weeks that he really is on a mission," he said. "He's very, very focused - you know, he'll still have his fun at times - but there's a little edge to things. This is a mission he wants to accomplish."

At times it looked like mission impossible against Verdasco.

But Maclagan feels Murray's struggles in the quarter-final were partly self-inflicted and partly down to the quality of his opponent.

"I think he was a little bit tentative," he said.
.......

And Maclagan said: "He's got a very analytical mind. I'm not sure he changed necessarily so much - I think the situation sometimes forces players to change a bit.

"Even easy matches are decided on fairly fine margins so, when those margins start to shift, the match turns around.

"And Andy is someone who is able, in those tight moments, to make good decisions more often than not. He's reaped his rewards for it."
......

"So many times I have spoken with the heart," said Maclagan. "I think statistically you still have to give Djokovic the edge.

"We don't know yet what sort of physical toll yesterday will have taken [on Andy]. Let's not forget who he's playing in the semi-finals, one of the biggest hitters in the men's game.

"He'll have to be very wary against this guy, he's exciting to watch.

"But the short answer to your question, as always, is 'Yes - he can'.

"Will he? He's still got two mountains ahead of him."

Wasn't 100% sure where to post this but post Gary Richardson interview I had messaged BBC a complaint and ths was their reply

Thank you very much for getting in touch with us about our Wimbledon 2013 coverage, specifically BBC One’s broadcast of the Murray -v- Verdasco quarterfinal on Wednesday evening.

We were naturally very sorry to learn of viewer unhappiness over Garry Richardson’s interview with Andy Murray following his quarterfinal win on Centre Court, so we immediately reviewed the programme segment and raised the concerns with the senior editorial team responsible within BBC Sport.

In hindsight, BBC Sport agree that Garry Richardson’s question towards the end of his interview with Andy Murray regarding whether Ivan Lendl would be giving him Sir Alex Ferguson’s infamous “hairdryer treatment” was inappropriate, particularly following Andy’s heroic efforts which saw him through to his 5th successive Wimbledon semi-final.

For this we apologise, and it’s worth adding here that Garry later personally spoke to Andy who was very gracious in accepting the apology; indeed Andy later Tweeted “Don't be too hard on Garry Richardson he had a bad day and he apologised afterwards”.

That said, the rest of the interview was very positive with Garry offering Andy at the very outset “many congratulations [for] a great achievement”, and Garry went on to talk about Andy’s own “high standards” and said that he had clearly “held his nerve” during the match before going to on to ask him to explain his thoughts on the pressures and emotions involved in such a crucial, high-pressure match.

Andy was allowed to fully explain his approach, tactics and thoughts on the match itself as well as some wider points, so we’re sorry to learn that you perhaps felt that some of Garry’s questions could have been better phrased. As the interview concluded, Garry ended by again congratulating Andy, saying it had been “a fantastic achievement, brilliant for you, such character”, rounding off with “a brilliant performance, well done!”.

Thank you again for getting in touch and allowing us to investigate and respond. We are sorry for any offence caused by the interview, but we also hope that you can agree that the conversation as a whole was incredibly positive and congratulatory in light of Andy’s amazing win against Verdasco.

Kind Regards

Andy Murray - semi-final

Friday 5 July 2013

Andy Murray's press conference after his 6‑7, 6‑4, 6‑4, 6‑3 victory against Jerzy Janowicz.

Q. You said on the tele or the radio that your emotion in the moment of game, set, and match was different this year to last year. Can you just expand on that a little bit.

ANDY MURRAY: I mean, I think, yeah, I played three semis in a row. It was the first time I'd been through to the final, so there were a mixture of emotions. I was very relieved after the semis last year; whereas this year, yeah, I mean, I think I was a bit happier to have won the match.

It wasn't as much of sort of a release after the match. Last year I think there was a lot of tension in my semifinal match; whereas today it wasn't quite the same. It was just a different feeling I think because I've got to a position I've been in before; whereas last year it was completely new to me.

Q. Given the fourth set you won in 35 minutes, was it the wrong call to close the roof?

ANDY MURRAY: I mean, I don't know what the ruling is on it. I just feel that, you know, Wimbledon is an outdoor event, and you should play outdoors until it is not possible to do that anymore. That's my feeling on the roof.

I mean, it worked out okay for me in the end.

Q. You seemed pretty angry at the time when you were told.

ANDY MURRAY: Everybody would be. I mean, it's just normal. You've got all the momentum with you. It's still very light outside. You know, they played the Wimbledon final of Rafa and Roger played till, what, 9:40 in the evening. It was 8:40 when we stopped. There's still 40 minutes to an hour to play.

Q. Did it help you, that sort of anger? Did you use that?

ANDY MURRAY: No, it was fine. Once I got back on the court I wasn't angry. It was for a few minutes. Once the situation is there, you aren't angry anymore. You just get back to the locker room, shower, speak to the guys, and get ready to play again.

You don't have that anger when you get back on the court. It's just at that moment it's frustrating. You know, when someone in football kicks someone or puts in a bad tackle, gets sent off, people get angry for a few minutes, make a mistake or whatever, and then 20 minutes later it's fine.

I still had a job to do.

Q. What did Andrew Jarrett say to you?

ANDY MURRAY: He just said, It's the right thing to stop. That was it.

Q. Was he apologetic at all?

ANDY MURRAY: No. There's no reason to be apologetic. He's the referee. He makes the decision, so...

There's no need for him to apologize for making that decision. That's what he's paid to do. It's his job.

Q. My question is: What does the Olympic gold medal mean to you? More confidence, less pressure, further expecting, or something else?

ANDY MURRAY: I think winning Olympic gold, I mean, I don't know if I'll ever have sort of feelings like I had that day. You know, winning Olympic gold here, a home Olympics, I mean, I'll never get the opportunity to do that again.

So, yeah, it was probably one of the proudest moments of my career. I don't know if I'll ever top that. I don't think it brought any less or more pressure winning that.

Q. Can you speak on Jerzy's potential, what you felt from his game today, what you think of him going forward?

ANDY MURRAY: Well, I mean, you never know how good someone is ever going to be, but I would assume after this tournament he's not far off the top 10. I would have thought in the next few months he'll get himself inside the top 10.

I mean, it depends on a lot of factors. He's obviously young. He has a huge game. He moves very well for his size. He's very athletic. I think like his physique is kind of the future of tennis, the way guys are getting bigger and moving better, as well.

You know, him and Del Potro are quite similar in that they're both guys that move well from the back of the court and have a lot of power. I think Jerzy will be around the top of the game for quite a while.

Q. Did you feel any difference in him today as opposed to Paris?

ANDY MURRAY: No. The Paris match was a weird one for me. I was in a very good position that match and lost focus a little bit. Then he played, yeah, that way most matches. He's very unpredictable.

You know, he has a lot of power, but he also has good feel. He has a lot of dropshots. He very rarely misses them. Sometimes he doesn't hit them perfectly, but he rarely misses dropshots.

Yeah, he goes for it and he's pretty loose on the court. That's tough to play against.

Q. I'm wondering if you can carry any of what happened last year here, the great run, into Sunday, what you might have learned from that. Also, if you could bring him back right now, what kind of a chat would you have with Fred Perry?

ANDY MURRAY: Well, I mean, I think I learnt a lot from last year's Wimbledon. The whole grass court season last year I learnt a lot from. The one thing that kind of stands out is I knew how I needed to play the sort of big matches, or try to play the big matches after Wimbledon, because I didn't come away from that final kind of doubting sort of myself or the decisions I made on the court, because I went for it. You know, I lost, but I didn't have any regrets as such.

And then, yeah, I don't know what I would ask Fred Perry or say to him. To be honest, I've never been asked that before.

Q. What do you think he would say to you?

ANDY MURRAY: Why are you not wearing my kit?

Q. Did you watch any of the first semifinal?

ANDY MURRAY: Yeah, I saw bits and pieces of it. I mean, from what I saw, looked like they were playing some great tennis. A lot of long rallies and big hitting. Novak looked like he was retrieving extremely well, as always.

You know, Juan came up with some huge tennis. In the fourth set when he looked like he was tiring, he fought extremely hard.

Yeah, I mean, I think from what I saw, it looked like a very, very good match.

Q. On the previous issue of expectations, how might your expectations be different than last year going into this year's Wimbledon final and your mindset?

ANDY MURRAY: I think I'll be probably in a better place mentally. You know, I would hope so just because I've been there before. You know, I won a Grand Slam. You know, I would hope I would be a little bit calmer going into Sunday.

But you don't know. You don't decide that, you know. I might wake up on Sunday and be unbelievably nervous, more nervous than I ever have been before.

But I wouldn't expect to be.

Q. Do you feel there are a good number of similarities between your game and Novak's? How do you think your game differs from his?

ANDY MURRAY: Yeah, I think there is some similarities there in terms of if you look at stats and stuff. I mean, both of us return well. That's probably the strongest part of our games. Both play predominantly from the baseline.

We both move well, but a different sort of movement. You know, he's extremely flexible and he slides into shots ‑ even on the courts here. He slides more. He's quite a bit lighter than me.

So I'd say I probably move with more power and he's much more flexible than me. And then, yeah, that's kind of it. There's a few similarities, yeah.

Q. Who will have the psychological edge? Will it be you after winning here at the Olympics, or will it be Novak after winning at the Australian Open?

ANDY MURRAY: You never know. It depends on the day. Sometimes it can depend on how the match starts. Sometimes one player can be extremely nervous before. Who knows?

We'll have to wait and see on Sunday.

Q. There is such a small age difference between you and Nole. You know each other very well. How would you consider your relationship with Novak? Is it a friendship or has it moved on to a rivalry now?

ANDY MURRAY: I mean, it's hard to say exactly. I mean, yeah, we have a professional friendship I think now. When we were younger it was more friendly; whereas now, you know, I still message him sometimes. We've spent a lot of time discussing various issues within tennis and doing what I think sometimes what was best for the sport.

But, yeah, I don't think it goes more than that right now. You know, I would hope when we finish playing it will be different. But, yeah, it's just hard because, you know, playing in big, big matches with, you know, a lot on the line, you can't be best of friends when that's happening.

Q. What do you consider his main strength? Is it the mental part of the game? Do you consider that mental part so important?

ANDY MURRAY: I think it's more physical. I think he's extremely fit physically, and that's why he's able to fight until the last point of every match.

He never really has any letdowns physically, which he used to when he was younger. That's something that's changed a lot over the last few years.

Q. I know there's sort of the ranking of achievements can be tiresome sometimes, but because of the weight of history, 77 years, Fred Perry, would winning Wimbledon mean more to you than winning the US Open? Where do those things sit in your mind?

ANDY MURRAY: I mean, I haven't thought that much about it. I haven't looked at it like that. But, you know, winning Wimbledon would be, yeah, a huge achievement for any tennis player.

I think winning my first slam after failing, you know, a lot of times at the final hurdle, I don't think anything will sort of top that sort of relief or release that I had after that match.

Yeah, winning Wimbledon is pretty much the pinnacle of the sport.

Q. You won 71% of second‑serve points today. The last few times you played Novak, he's often won more than 50%. He's one of the best returners in the world ‑ maybe of all time. How do you feel your second serve is working now and how important is that going to be in the match?

ANDY MURRAY: Yeah, it's an important stat in most matches, how you defend your second serve, especially when you're playing against one of the best returners.

You know, sometimes you can go for more. You can go for more accuracy. You can sometimes try and put more spin on it. You know, you cannot have to hit as many second serves if I serve like I did this evening. I served well tonight, and that helps, too.

Yeah, it's an important part of the game.

Q. You won your only previous match on grass against Novak. Do you think this surface gives you any advantage?

ANDY MURRAY: No. I mean, he's won here. He's obviously in the final here. Semis last year. He has a very, very good record on the grass.

I don't think this surface gives me an advantage, no.

Q. Djokovic has said that he keeps calm by meditating. There's a Buddhist temple in Wimbledon he goes to. I was wondering what do you use to try and focus, keep calm, et cetera, before the final?

ANDY MURRAY: I don't do that. Yeah, I watch TV, comedy TV I would say. But I don't, yeah, go to temple.

'When they work together, Ivan says very little but what he does say is positive and direct.'
