When Sue said - No, No - you're not going to -when Tim mentioned 2nd question and Tim said No, No, no reassuringly - I think we know what that was about. Rather liked that Sue and Tim decided not to go there with Andy and protect him. It causes him nothing but trouble especially at this time.
Interesting if it will come up during commentary though as could overlap with match
Before the Nadal-Delpo match Sue Andy & Tim were discussing the match courtside. When Andy was talking he was smiling quite a bit & looked like he was struggling not to laugh....:)

Good he was with Andrew Cotter, fellow Scot, who also has that dry understated humour and seemed good at relaxing and encouraging Andy.
No doubt Andrew Castle would have been trying to push the football angle a whole lot more.

It was so good to see Andy with Tim and Sue, and great to hear his voice (do think those croaky deep tones are so sexy)
He truly came across as so knowledgeable about the game and it was interesting to hear the things that he found difficult when playing Rafa, and also the shots that Rafa was not too keen on.
We've always known Andy was a great thinker about tennis and it came over in his commentary. One day I hope we'll hear a lot more....but please not yet - more tennis first !!!

Certainly cannot see anything confirming a Lendl appointment , would seem to be speculation again.
Paragraph from another Telegraph report
“The contrast with Edmund yesterday could not have been greater. Edmund, a mild-mannered sort, barely uttered a word all match. Murray by contrast was like an over-excited child at the end of a long school day, bouncing around the baseline with feverish energy and intensity. Edmund was eventually forced into the role of long-suffering parent, reluctantly giving in to their kid's demands.
Seeing Murray so pumped up and invested in the match was heartwarming for his fans and tennis in general, which has been poorer for the absence of one of the greatest fighters to have played the game.”

This is the bit that made me fume
“I hope that Andy really takes into consideration this role in his sport and as a global role model to guys and girls on the tour and kids around the world that, when things are difficult and tough and the conditions aren’t great, it’s not okay to just give up,” said O’Brien, who is in her second year helming the tournament. “I hope we see him on court tonight, fighting like he did last night, because that, I believe, is the right message for anyone in this sport. Certainly, if he can’t play because of his injury, that’s one thing. But he’s a fighter, and he doesn’t give up, and he needs to have everyone see that.”
Murray’s quarterfinal was scheduled to be the last of four matches on Stadium Court on Friday. Before rain disrupted the schedule again, Arlington’s Denis Kudla had been scheduled to play Andrey Rublev at 7 p.m., and Murray’s match was to follow. Neither match ended up being played.
The poor chap would have been in exactly the same position again.
I bet they wouldn’t have done it to Saint Rodger

Well he wouldn't because he wouldn't have played... but would have had to play twice today if by some miracle he had won first match.
Think the TD backed down a bit as condemned on twitter (including by me) and issued conciliatory statement when Andy did withdraw.
Keely O'Brien's quote: "He's a fighter and he needs to have everyone see that" infuriated me. In my opinion, Andy has proved he is a fighter hundreds of times and he doesn't need to show it to a handful of spectators at a ridiculous hour because of her inept scheduling.

She lacked the self-awareness to see the irony in her statement - telling Andy to not give up! The man has never given up for a single second in his life. Withdrawing because his body is not ready for the exertion caused by the rubbish scheduling isn't giving up, it's sheer good sense and probable necessity

At best O'Brien's comments were insensitive and seemed as if she was trying to exert pressure. Clearly all Tournament Directors would prefer the big names to be there as long as possible but Andy was clearly spent a just was not given enough consideration at this stage of his comeback. Doubt Federer would play here nowadays but couldn't imagine same treatment and unlikely to attract too many going deep at Wimbledon. Whilst the latest statement was conciliatory in a sense the damage was done. It was claimed matches didn't start earlier some of the days as players had complained about the heat in the past but clearly in the circumstances a poor decision.

Yes the Federer incident occurred to me too - and he wasn't coming back from an injury either - he just wanted to save himself for the DC Final the following week so that he could tick it off on his CV, binning off the WTF because he'd already won it several times

I disagree with bringing any other player, Federer included into this. It's speculative & irrelevant. Murray chose to do what he did, & he probably didn't give one iota of thought as to what any other player would think.
Would Murray be happy at attempts to drag Federer's name into this....? I know what I think. The two of them get on ok & respect each other.

I disagree. I don’t think Federer has any respect for anyone other than himself. I can’t imagine they get on in anything other than a professional sense.
I also think recognising that the treatment given out to players, varies according to “how much noise” they make is a valid point.

That's an outrageous thing to suggest.
Don't be thinking I'm a Federer fan, I'm not. But I respect what he's achieved & what he can do on a tennis court.
Would Murray have got him to come to Scotland if your suggestion is correct....? Would he have AGREED to come to Scotland......

I still disagree with you. Something that is true, is not outrageous. Respecting what Federer has achieved on a tennis court, is one thing, that is indisputable - however as a man, I think he repeatedly demonstrates that he is not a particularly nice man.
1) I suggest you look at how Federer treats his opponents, and the comments he has made about them. He never loses because the other person played well, but only because he Federer wasn’t on top form. He doesn’t complement other players, except with barbs.
https://www.telegraph.co.uk/tennis/2016/02/16/roger-federers-top-10-bust-ups/roger-federer-and-andy-murray-lift-trophy-and-shield-respectivel/
There are many, many more examples. There have been a lot quoted on here. Federer’s arrogance is often cited.
2) As for Federer agreeing to come to Scotland, I think that is nothing more than normal professional interactions. I was at both the charity matches in Glasgow. Dimitrov was fully engaged in the process, Federer looked like he was there under duress.

Ah, but who is to say that what you've said is true? You? :) You've posted some strong opinions which is your perfect right but they are still just subjective opinions so to deem them 'true' is bold. You don't like Federer so you interpret everything about him in a negative way, others either like him or at least his tennis so interpret things differently. It's more a matter of taste than truth. You're free to say whatever you like (within forum rules) but freedom of expression isn't freedom from disagreement, and strong opinions will often attract strong objections which are *equally valid* (rather than true).
Josephine

Andy and Roger clearly respect and like each other. Federer at Glasgow under duress? I certainly didn't see that. I seem to remember him being game enough to put on a woman's kilt and give Andy the 'Jimmy' wig. He asked Andy to play in Switzerland in his exho and returned the favour. Why would he have invited Andy in the first place.
I personally find Federer a bit arrogant too, but I think your comments are insulting to Andy to suggest he pretends to both like and admire Roger. You can pick out incidents between many tennis players on court. That doesn't mean they don't get on off court.
I don't come on here often, but diatribe in the post three above doesn't encourage me to do so. Andy Murray seems a decent, thoroughly grounded individual, - I very much doubt he'd want to be connected to the remarks above.

The real point is nothing to do with what Andy thinks of Federer or vice versa - I'm sure they have a very professional relationship these days. The original discussion was that (at least in my view) the tournament director would not have made the comments she made if it had been Federer not Andy. All speculation of course, but I don't recall any officials criticising Fed for that pull-out in the WTF.

Interview with Andy in NYT. https://www.nytimes.com/2018/08/15/sports/tennis/andy-murray.html
Amongst other things Andy advocates bo3:
“As a player, I really like best-of-five; it’s been good to me,” he said. “I feel like it rewards the training and everything you put into that. But then, when I sat and watched the match — that Nadal-del Potro match in the commentary booth — it was an amazing match, it was a brilliant match, but it was really, really long to sit there as a spectator for the first time.”
The match, which lasted 4 hours 48 minutes — long, but well shorter than either of the subsequent men’s semifinals — disrupted Murray’s day.
“That evening I had a meeting planned, and I missed my dinner,” he said. “People that are sitting there during the week watching that all, I don’t think you can plan to do that. A lot of people are going to be getting up and leaving the matches and not actually watching the whole thing. The people while in the stadium loved it, but I don’t think it — as well, what happened in the semifinals — is good for tennis.”
Have to say I'm pretty suprised by his stance: maybe keep bo5 slam prestige and just get dinner elsewhere?? Losing bo5 from slams would just about be the last straw, fo me.
And the debate rumbles on...Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic weigh in on best-of-five debate
https://metro.co.uk/2018/08/16/roger-federer-novak-djokovic-weigh-best-five-debate-7845386/amp/
Federer calls for more 5 set matches outside of Grand Slams as "it's an opportunity wasted"
Djokovic: "I would have Grand Slams the best of 3"
My question to Federer would be *would you actually be playing in all these events you would make b of 5, my friend*!!
Josephine
16-08-2018, 11:09
I think his point is how many people can sit through a 5 set match on TV? We certainly would if it featured Andy. It depends on the players and many wouldn't attract an audience. 6 hours of Anderson / Isner or whatever it was? I watched a bit of last set, turned over and just checked back to see final outcome. Don't think it has to do with eating your dinner. (Andy missed his dinner because he had do do something else afterwards so not to do with where he had it). I think the Rafa /Del Potro one I watched as much as I could and of course the last set and a half. But in the meantime I had other things to do - earn my living by doing some work!
Also 3 sets of Federer annihilating some poor bloke in early rounds? I switch off after first set.
I also like best of 5 matches - and I hope they remain in slams but I think there is a valid point to be made about watching a really long match. Perhaps a compromise would be 5 sets from QF onwards with tiebreak at 10 or 12 all in final set.
I too would definitely like the b of 5 to remain in slams, but have shifted my stance somewhat on final set TB's. Perhaps some way of shortening final sets could be introduced, but we have already discussed this after Wimbledon and I apologise if this is going off-topic here!

Yip Pat, I also agree with a fifth set tb, maybe at 10 or 12 all. But I'd be heartbroken to lose bo5 as Andy suggests - the viewing figures tend to be higher for slams than other tournaments, people can't wait for them to come around, so that tells us something. When I think of the greatest matches of all time, (not just ones featuring Andy) they are the 5 setters that seem have it all, swing this way then that, possess a level drama there simply isn't time for in bo3. Plus it would be beyond sad to kill off one of the greatest challenges in tennis - coming back from 2 sets down.
(sorry, missed the post-Wimbledon debate on this topic - would/should have posted there. Maybe I'll move these posts, if I can remember how :-/ )
Andy would have one less Slam with bo3. Bo5 is what makes Slams special.
Josephine
16-08-2018, 13:01
Well Federer would have gone out in round 1 whatever year it was. Think he went on to win. That can't be an argument against change as we could list examples for ever. In any case you can't totally judge a match. Perhaps whoever you are referring to (Verdasco?) would have got nervous and not won in 2.
Anyway my suggestion is 5 sets from QF onwards.
i like bo5 in Slams, that's what makes them special in my mind. and i'd keep bo5 throughout a Slam, it's in the early rounds that most upsets happen i think, of the sort that aren't possible in bo3. (hasn't andy been 2 sets down v gasquet twice? not that i'm advocating special pleading)
and i like bo5 in Davis Cup, including in dubs..
but i'd have a tb after 6-6 in all sets, possibly a tb10 to decide 5th set, i see no virtue in playing for ever a la isner/mahut fiasco/festival.
andy and novak both think tennis as a spectacle has to appeal to the short attention span, or simple lack of time of the 'youngsters' (persons under 28?)
after all football is a fixed 90 mins (plus the extra 5mins Man U time), and cricket is 20/20.
and that tennis needs to recruit more fans is evident - the anguished discussions in the DC thread show how we fear the fans lose out in the battle v the big bucks. committed fans may revel in long matches, tho perhaps 'the youngsters' need to be enticed in with the more dramatic bo3 games.
for me the bo5 Slam battles are rather more satisfying, the result seems more conclusive than the one set shoot-out in bo3.

I too would definitely like the b of 5 to remain in slams, but have shifted my stance somewhat on final set TB's. Perhaps some way of shortening final sets could be introduced, but we have already discussed this after Wimbledon and I apologise if this is going off-topic here!
Same here. I was pretty much against final set TBs until this year's Wimbledon semis. Following that I'd be happy with a TB at 8-8 or 10-10 in the final set.
And for once I'll have to disagree with Andy, best of 5 at GS events is what makes them special. Have to say I love a good 5 hour epic
I also like the 5 set slams but think a tiebreak at 12-12 in 5th set would be sensible.
It seems Andy has gained his perspective from being in the commentary box for that length of time. It seems to have put him off commentating at all when he retires, which I think is a shame. It would be good to have him commenting on occasional matches, he's a natural.
It's a little different I would imagine than being anywhere else, and watching on TV, where you can quickly grab a snack, make dinner, put on pause and catch up during change of ends to go to the bathroom. The commentary box doesn't seem to be that big and to be committed to being there throughout a long match must be difficult.
If I am watching Andy, I usually have my eyes glued to the match no matter how long it is. Anything else has to fit into commercial breaks at change of ends!!!! It doesn't matter how long the match is!!

Think a lot of articles like this have been written by journalists with virtually zero tennis knowledge and don't know about/understand the DC changes so totally missed the point of what Andy said in his statement about not playing the tie. Then they turned t into a suggestion he may retire just for the headlines

I have always been against tie-breaks in final sets (to be honest I dont like TBs much anyway) but thye health of the players is of prime importance and we all saw what happened at Wimbledon this year.
I do think 12-12 is a far compromise - I would hate to see someone lose a final over a couple of rushed points in a tie-break but that's the equivalent of a further 4-5 games. Hope it works out well.

Federer was second with a 62% positive opinion while 90% have heard of the Swiss player. However, he did attract a 4% negative opinion.
Generation X had a 65% positive opinion, Baby Boomers 62% and Millennials 55%.

Andy Murray
Murray stepping away from Twitter and embracing Instagram is the plot twist we never knew we needed this season. The Scot’s posts have been nothing short of legendary. Whether he’s drawing attention to gun violence issues in America, posting childhood photos of himself accompanied by emotional messages about his injury struggles, bantering with other players in the comments, sharing videos of his impressively acrobatic workouts, and his most recent contribution: A photo of himself on the beach standing next to an inflatable ice cream lilo (https://www.instagram.com/p/Bqp_Z7EFusT/). Murray on Instagram could be a show on Netflix.

Aside from ongoing fitness concerns, one of the biggest questions facing the former world No. 1 is over what he will be wearing during 2019. His clothing deal with Under Armour expired this season and he has been testing out several brands during the off season.
One of those brands was little-known Castore – a high-end sports company founded by brothers Phil and Tom Beahon. Metro.co.uk understands that Murray has not signed a deal with Castore to be his main clothes sponsors next season, though they are among the brands in the running to land the three-time Grand Slam champion. The Brit has been wearing Nike shoes during his training stint in Miami and it’s expected he will continue to do so next year, with an announcement on his clothing sponsors expected ahead of his first appearance of the season in Brisbane.

Optimistic and resolute! :)
Andy would not be there just to make up the numbers but, honest as ever, he simply does not know what will happen if he starts having to play four or five games on the trot so... optimistic he is ready to try, fingers crossed and, looking at the bigger picture that it may, as Haas says - speaking from experience - take a few months for Andy to get back to, or near, his best.

Offering further insight into Murray’s problems yesterday was the surgeon who operated on his hip in Melbourne at the beginning of this year. Speaking on BBC Radio Five Live, John O’Donnell said that it was likely that the pain would never completely dissipate.
“That wouldn’t be surprising because he has had problems with his hip for some time,” O’Donnell said. “It had reached a point where he couldn’t play. It wasn’t really at a stage where we could attempt to make his hip normal, it was just to try and make it as [good] as we could. He’s certainly improved but he still has problems with it.
“I think he has been walking a tightrope for some time. It’s just his intense desire to do really well that’s kept him going as well as he has. It’s pretty hard to predict [how successful he can be in the future] because he’s not like a normal person.
“He just does things that are beyond what I could normally understand. It is really hard to know quite how far he can push it. If it comes down to will, he will certainly do extremely well — but he has had a lot of challenges to deal with.”

Good article by Eve Muirhead in The Courier. Much better than the hot take, overly dramatic reports.
'There was a lot made of Andy Murray’s comments after his first game back in 2019. Murray had just won and then said that he wants to enjoy his tennis as much as he can because he doesn’t know “how much longer it’s going to last”. What followed was a series of headlines about fresh doubts over his career. That wasn’t how I took it. For me, he was only stating the facts.'

This New York Times article includes some great quotes from Mark Petchey
“He was a kaleidoscope of talent, of emotion, of movement, spirit and authenticity,” said Petchey, a former British player who introduced Murray to Kim Sears, who would become Murray’s wife. “He was a winner, but he became a champion. A champion not just on the court but a champion of causes off it. He leaves as he arrived. Tennis never changed him, but he changed tennis."

I think it's my favourite comment so far, and means a lot coming for Petchey who got to know Andy well, and played a part in his journey

Where did you find this comment from Petchey? I have read several articles & not seen it yet. I was sure he must have been asked
