Oh dear. Was trying to stay firmly team positive unless I had reason to be otherwise- feel myself sliding towards team doom and gloom. Poor Andy.
Oh dear. Was trying to stay firmly team positive unless I had reason to be otherwise- feel myself sliding towards team doom and gloom. Poor Andy.
Even though I am a pessimist through and through, I am disappointed as well. My interest in tennis has always been Andy Murray first and last, with the British players creeping in as well. Since his last match I have hardly watched a match, although I track the up and coming Brits. I miss it.
However with my own experience of hips, and hip surgery, whilst getting back to walking, chasing the kids around, and playing recreational sport - yes. I just have never been able to see a return to high level sport on the cards.
I also don’t want him to try to do so, at the expense of his post tennis life. Seeing the great Borg hobbling about at Wimbledon a couple of years ago, barely able to walk was depressing. I don’t want that for AM.
I don’t think we have seen the last of him, but his future lies in coaching in my opinion. Sorry.
Not great news but let's hope it's just a minor setback. If not, there's always the possibility of doubles with Jamie, of course - ever the optimist! ;)
Eurosport (https://au.eurosport.com/tennis/konta-hopes-murray-can-recover-in-time-for-grass-court-season_sto6746921/story.shtml) - Konta hopes Murray can recover in time for grass-court season
Guardian (https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2018/may/08/andy-murray-doubt-wimbledon-new-injury-fears-johanna-konta) - Andy Murray a doubt for Wimbledon after fears over recovery emerge
However, a spokesperson for Queens, the grasscourt tournament that starts on 18 June, two weeks before Wimbledon, said their six-times champion is still on the entry list and they have had no indication he plans to pull out.
“Wimbledon is such a long way off,” a source close to the championships at the Queens Club in west London said, “nearly two months, in fact, it seems premature to be writing him off.
https://i.guim.co.uk/img/media/f2f53a823edb4bda3b035058a4b68a2b53ae2a55/0_139_2480_1488/master/2480.jpg?w=460&q=55&auto=format&usm=12&fit=max&
“We certainly have had no news to that effect. He is still on our entry list [posted on Tuesday], which is the strongest in the history of the tournament, with six of the world’s top 10 and 17 of the top 30 featured, along with former champions and finalists.”
He added: “It could happen, but there has been no word from his camp. We expect to be working with him in promoting the event at some point in the coming weeks.”
Why they were slow to withdraw Andy from the French Open.
Times (https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/andy-murray-could-miss-out-on-wimbledon-after-injury-setback-kb6ktq5nq) - Andy Murray may not be fit for Wimbledon after injury setback
Ironically, Murray’s team recently overcame hurdles to keep the prospect open of playing on the hard courts of Loughborough. Under the rules of the Grand Slam Board (GSB) and the ATP, pulling his name out of the French Open entry list on medical grounds meant that he was not permitted to play a Challenger tournament in the week leading up to the second major tournament of the year.
Only after officials from the GSB, ATP and French Open came together to discuss this unprecedented situation was Murray allowed to withdraw, providing a medical with the advice of a doctor stating that it was not rational to play best-of-five-set matches on clay courts this soon in his recovery from hip surgery. It now appears, though, that the efforts of all involved are in vain.
Rumours? Speculation? Surely this is only just that at the moment? What source has this "Murray comeback likely to be delayed" comment come from? 'Likely', that does not mean definitely. Often there is no smoke without fire, but until I hear directly from 'the horse's mouth', I will disregard rumours and speculation. BUT.....Andy has always made it quite clear that he will not return until he is 100% ready, so if that turns out to be the case, so be it. It makes sense. I would rather wait a bit longer for his return (even though I am missing him loads) rather than have him come back too soon and then have to go away again for maybe even longer! Just get well Andy in your own time and we'll see you when you are ready.

It is clear the papers have a source.
Very sad if Andy takes longer than he hoped to recover.
Andy shouldn't come back till he feels he's ready. Yes, it's frustrating for us, but how much more for him. We have been totally spoilt over the past years with such a great player to support. When (dare I say, if) Andy returns, we must savour every minute.

Took the words right out of my mouth, Pat - thanks for saying it all so eloquently. Doesn't matter if there *seems* to be a logic to it unless it comes from Andy himself or an official team announcement anything else is just rumour and speculation. And I don't listen to gossip about anyone I care about as a matter of principle. The press showed themselves up so badly at the start of the year, you'd think they'd have learnt their lesson, but on they go.

What was she on the programme for?
The main focus was on Judy's book, most chat about early days (more on Jamie) and Judy's coaching/efforts at promoting more women in the sport. At one point she was was also asked to give a % on Andy's fitness, unsurprisingly she declined.

More than any other tournament Andy would be heartbroken to miss a Wimbledon. Can only imagine what he's putting himself through to try and make it. Surely it's only natural that he and his camp would be focussing 100% on these efforts, rather than worrying about media.

I think we have been patient - every day I check to see if there's any news.
It's been like that for months. As is the same for most of us on here.
At the start it was understandable to hear nothing but we are so close now to his proposed return date that it's less about being patient but being concerned about the silence.
It's also fair to say that I really want good news so whilst I want news I'm not desperate to hear anything bad or sad!
Andy has a whole team managing his PR so I don't think this will be an issue he alone is carrying.

I haven't labelled anyone anything, but I'm sorry if you took it that way. You said Andy was being unfair to his loyal fans. Well, this loyal fan really doesn't think that Andy is being unfair at all , so stated an alternative. The crux is that some people seem to think that Andy somehow owes them news, info, updates etc whereas others don't. I don't think Andy owes anyone, anything. But as I said it's a free country.

If we can't register our worry over Andy here including the lack of news, then where can we? This is for sharing our feelings about Andy. I totally respect Andy's right to give no news until he wants to. But I am also feeling concerned by the lack of any news and so can understand others also wishing to show their concern and yes impatience - only because we are all so desperate for good news. :)

Just to be clear, these are two different points - I made a point of discussing/responding to them separately earlier in the thread. Concern at at lack of news is natural and probably shared by all. It's the criticising of Andy as being unfair to fans for not giving 'sufficient' news that I take exception to. I'm sure Andy would love nothing more than to be confirming his Wimbo participation, but he cannot tell us what he doesn't know himself - sorry, but the notion that makes Andy unfair to fans irks me and I totally disagree (just as others are perfectly entitled to disagree with me). Just wanted to clarify. Have said my piece.

Much as we all would like to know exactly what's going on, Andy is just as entitled to his privacy as anyone else . I don't think being in the public eye should change that. It's because folk are loyal fans that they are desperate for news. But I don't think it entitles us to it. If I was off sick I wouldn't expect parents of my pupils to be privy to medical updates ( not quite same but trying to put it into context of our lives) Everyone is just edgy just now because we are at the stage where we might start to see him. The recent media speculation has not helped. It was easier earlier in year when we knew for fact he wasn't playing. So I think it's natural folks are getting twitchy. But as Judy said, when there's something to tell, Andy will tell us.
So we are all loyal fans and all desperate to see Andy back.

The news that Andy's recovery was going a bit slower than hoped came from inside Andy's camp. That is what the papers said - yes they then speculate to a wild degree which is what all journalists do. (Is it her dog who will be walking Ms Markle down the aisle? - I read that on BBC website today - presumably a joke)
We weren't sure Andy wouldn't play Brisbane or Oz earlier in the year - in fact there was a lot of press speculation (not approved of) which turned out to be right.
Unfortunately the lack of definite news leads to more and more speculation, which is the normal response. No, Andy is not under any obligation to reveal anything, but yes it is frustrating to hear nothing. I don't think there is any reason for fans' loyalty to be questioned on here.
angiebabez
18-05-2018, 10:28
Also a lot of these loyal fans have paid out a helluva lot of money in the hope of seeing Andy at upcoming grass tourneys...hotels, flights, tickets are and yes I totally get that was a chance we were all taking but he was entered into them a long time ago now...sure things can change were rehab & recovery are concerned but come on its only 3 weeks now till he plays rosmalen surely they must know one way or another? And also to clarify I am NOT blaming Andy for anything he is my absolute hero and of course his health and well being is and always will come first.
I think we can all agree that his online representation, for want of a better phrase, hasn't been the same since we were unceremoniously binned.
I do find it slightly strange that there has been nothing at all by way of updates. Of course Andy is absolutely entitled to keep his medical information private, but even the odd snippet like "another week of physio" or "slow progress being made" ANYTHING in fact would keep the fans happy. Unfortunately we know that the media wouldn't be happy with that, and they would produce endless column inches extrapolating what that means. And therein probably lies the problem. If you give the media a snippet, they'll run with it for miles. Say nothing, and they are kept slightly more at bay.
The strangest part for me is his absence on social media. The odd (very funny) comment in response to someone else's post, or his instagram photo on his birthday. Even if he wasn't giving updates on how rehab was going, I think if he did a few more general posts that would keep us as fans happy - just to see him! But of course its all part of the wider PR strategy, and presumably its what Andy himself wants - in which case we just have to put up with it.
Patience was never my strong point. We are just going to have to keep watching and waiting, however hard that is.

Come back soon guys!
I know, HG, it is horrible to see any of the top guys unable to fulfil their talent due to injury  but I saw that Metro article and thought it was well ott with talk of Stan's 'surprise defeat' and the 'disastrous consequence that he will now tumble down the rankings quite spectacularly'. Seriously?! I watched Stan and there were definitely things to be pleased about - firstly, that he's back at all, but also he took an experienced Spaniard to 5 on clay, he just, unsurprisingly, ran out of steam. Watching I felt pleased for Stan and hopeful for Andy (apples and oranges, I know, just take positives where I see them).
As we have done before at grand slams I suggest we post all the newspaper articles on the brits on here. Any exceptional article could also be posted on the players threads too. The reason for this is that it is difficult to find/post newspaper articles on the british players when a lot of people are following matches live and there are pages and pages of live scoring. Articles often cover more than one player too.
(Non brit players get covered in their own threads or the ATP general thread or Roland Garros thread)

Yes RB - it was presented as something much worse than it was. I saw the replay and Stan wasn't a walkover by any means. I was more surprised at how far he has dropped given that I thought his injury and surgery was more recent than Andys.
Not many people would want to meet a fit but low ranked Wawrinka firing backhands early in a tournament!
Let's hope that's also the case for Andy when he returns. Stan does sound like he thinks it won't take long to get back up the rankings.
It's really sad to see two great champions falling down the rankings so quickly because of the bad luck they had with injuries. I saw some of Stan's match and thought there were positive signs but it will take a huge effort on his part to get back to where he was.
I can't help wondering if both Andy and Stan will really think it is worth struggling to get back to where they were or even near it. There are new players who are beginning to seriously make their mark on the game; naturally they are determined to do this as well.
I know Roger and Rafa have had amazing achievements after a long layout but this year tennis is changing very rapidly not only with younger generation players but the ATP changes for the format of the game.
This year's French Open will tell us a lot about Rafa and Novak.

I guess only time will tell re Andy, Karanga, but did I find Jim Courier's comments today quite uplifting - he reiterated how the incredible defensive skills of the big 4 have set them apart. He said he hadn't seen that level of defence before them, and this is the bit I particularly liked, since them. For that reason he still thinks they have the edge over the young guns, so that was nice to hear.:) After his heart-rending insta definitely think Andy's got the motivation, just a matter, god-willing, of his body holding up :peace::peace::peace:

I guess only time will tell re Andy, Karanga, but did I find Jim Courier's comments today quite uplifting - he reiterated how the incredible defensive skills of the big 4 have set them apart. He said he hadn't seen that level of defence before them, and this is the bit I particularly liked, since them. For that reason he still thinks they have the edge over the young guns, so that was nice to hear.:) After his heart-rending insta definitely think Andy's got the motivation, just a matter, god-willing, of his body holding up :peace::peace::peace:
I heard him say that too I do like him for the most part as a commie.

Novak Djokovic offers support for Andy Murray: 'I can only imagine how difficult injury recovery has been'
While several of the leading men’s seeds were locked in five-set battles at Roland Garros yesterday, Novak Djokovic slipped through in understated style. The 2016 champion notched a 7-6, 6-4, 6-4 victory over qualifier Jaume Munar, and then sent out a supportive message to his old friend and rival, Andy Murray.
It’s often forgotten that Murray has been among the most consistent performers at Roland Garros in recent years, reaching four straight semi-finals between 2014 and 2017.
But last year’s deep run, which ended at the hands of Stan Wawrinka, represented his final tournament before a niggling pain began in his right hip. It seemed innocuous enough at the time, but fifty-one weeks and one keyhole operation later, Murray has yet to regain full fitness.
“We spoke recently because we are part of the [Association of Tennis Professionals] player council,” Djokovic explained. “We had a meeting and he was on the conference call. We got to have a FaceTime for three or four hours as part of that meeting.
“He's got two children now,” Djokovic added. “Life at home for sure for him is different. And I can only imagine how difficult it is for him, as well, to deal with the circumstances of injury. You know, that's something that I can relate to. I have had quite a similar situation, although his injury takes more time, obviously. Hopefully we can see him playing on grass, because that's where he wants to play.”
Murray is entered into the Libema Open in Rosmalen, Holland, which starts in ten days’ time and is intended to begin his grass-court build-up for Wimbledon. Unfortunately, the omens do not seem positive, and another late withdrawal – to match those he made from the US Open and the Brisbane International – would hardly be a surprise.
No-one in British tennis has seen Murray on a court for several weeks, barring a sponsor’s appearance with some aspiring juniors at the Hurlingham Club. There is a suggestion that he might plan to start hitting again in the next few days, but even a wholly shipshape player would surely want more than a week’s preparation for his first event in a year.

Only been on court a couple of days. Oh well here's hoping...
https://www.tennis365.com/andy-murray/exclusive-andy-murray-will-be-practicing-at-wimbledon-this-week/
EXCLUSIVE: Andy Murray will be practising at Wimbledon this week
Andy Murray will practise on the grass courts at Wimbledon this week as he prepares to make his return to the ATP Tour, Tennis365.com understands.
The former world No 1 has been out of action since losing against Sam Querrey in the Wimbledon quarter-finals last July, but we understand he is on course to make his return to competitive action at the Libema Open in Holland next week.
There have been widespread reports that Murray would miss the grass-court season after a slower than expected recovery from the hip surgery he underwent in January, but we understand there has been big progress in his recovery in recent weeks.
Murray’s camp has made no comment on his progress after his initial return to the court in March, when he practiced at the Patrick Mouratoglou academy in Nice.
The lack of updates from Murray and his advisers fuelled speculation that his recovery had not gone according to plan, but this latest news suggests he is on course to play at the Queen’s Club grass court event later this month and then take his place in main draw at Wimbledon.
Murray’s mother Judy has also given a positive update on her son to the BBC, as she confirmed he is preparing to make his long-awaited comeback.
“He’s doing the rehabilitation. He’s been back on the court in the last couple of days,” Judy told BBC Sport. “His goal was always to try and be ready for the grass-court season and that is still his goal, so fingers crossed.
“Any player who has been out injured, it takes you a bit of time to get back to top form. When he had his back surgery in 2013 he was back playing within three months, but it took him the best part of a year to get back to his top form.
“You need matches to build up your match fitness. You are not going to come back and start where you left off. He will be guided by his body and how he feels. He is the only person who knows how he feels.
“The most important thing is he gets fit again for the long term and any top athlete would tell you they would not come back until they felt they could give 100%, especially in a major like Wimbledon.”
Murray is likely to set his expectations low as he makes his return to the Tour, with his ranking in the low-150s set to confirmed when the new ATP listings are released next Monday.
Yet the news that he is back on court and planning to make a return will be a relief to his army of fans, who were beginning to fear they the Scot may not be able to kick-start a career that has already included three Grand Slam wins.

It says on ATP rankings that Andy is no 47. Of course when new rankings come out next week he will have fallen below Norrie. But at the current moment that is his official ranking and he is British No 2.
The full rankings can't be finalised until after French Open is completed so provisional rankings are just that for now.

VIDEO: Andy Murray close to playing again after ‘very slow’ recovery
Andy Murray has given an update about his recovery from hip surgery and his comeback.
Having missed the backend of the 2017 season due to the hip problem, Murray set his sights on a comeback at the Australian Open, but he pulled out on the eve of the tournament and underwent an operation.
He pencilled in the grass-court season for his return, but reports last month suggested that he might have to push back his comeback date as things were not going according to plan.
The three-time Grand Slam champion has kept updates about his recovery to a minimum, but he did speak about it during a Jaguar I-PACE Test Drive as part of World Environment Day, and Wimbledon remains on his schedule.
“It has been very slow. I’ve been getting close to a year now [that I have been out of action], which is a lot longer than me and any of my team expected at the beginning,” he said.
“But I am getting closer to playing again. I started training a few days ago and hoping to make my comeback during the grass-court season.”
As reported by Tennis365.com on Monday, Murray is expected to hit the practise courts at Wimbledon this week.

Murray ‘getting closer’ to aim of playing at Wimbledon
Andy Murray has ended a long period of silence by revealing that he is still planning to make a long-awaited comeback during the grass-court season. Where exactly his return to the tour will take place remains uncertain.
After almost five weeks without hitting a ball, following a setback in his rehabilitation from hip surgery in mid-April, the two-times Wimbledon champion resumed practice at the weekend. His next scheduled tournament, the Libema Open in the Netherlands, is now just six days away, and has to be in doubt.
“It has been very slow,” Murray said of his recovery. “I’ve been out getting close to a year now, which is a lot longer than I think me or any of my team expected at the beginning. But I’m getting closer to playing again, I’ve started training a few days ago and hoping to make my comeback during the grass-court season.”
If the Libema Open comes too soon, then the Fever-Tree Championships at London’s Queen’s Club the following week is Murray’s next option. Wimbledon, where Murray played his last competitive match in the quarter-finals almost 11 months ago, starts on July 2.
Asked for which player he regarded as the favourite at the All England Club this year, Murray replied: I’m hoping I will be there. But Roger Federer has obviously got a phenomenal record on grass.
“He’s won, I think, seven times at Wimbledon [Federer has actually won it on eight occasions] , so he’ll definitely be up there as one of the favourites. But you never know, it depends a little bit on the draw.”
Before this morning, the last official update from the Murray camp came at the end of February, when rehabilitation in the gym had gone well enough to ponder a potential return to competition before the start of the grass season.
But Murray’s progress stalled around three weeks after he started practising. Observers noticed him still walking with a slight limp during a training block at the Mouratoglou Academy in the south of France. When he returned to the United Kingdom, it was not long before he brought an end to his practice sessions on the at the All England Club.
While Murray never publicly stated it, he had initially harboured hopes in February that he would be able to launch his comeback in the new ATP Challenger tournaments on indoor hard courts in Glasgow, at the end of April, or in Loughborough, in mid-May. Both events, held at considerable expense for the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA), took place without his name in the draw.
Murray’s supporters will rightly feel a sense of optimism that he has managed to resume training ahead of the grass season, but he has previously said that he will only return to competition when he feels 100 per cent ready. One must wonder if this is possible ahead of tournaments that are now just days and weeks away.
Next Monday, Murray will drop outside the world’s top-150 due to his long period of absence. He will still be able to use a protected ranking to enter tournaments, but he cannot use it for seeding purposes. If he does play at Wimbledon, he will be unseeded and could face Federer in the first round.

Good to hear from Andy himself , though nothing specific on Rosmalen (probably doubtful) or Queen's/Wimbledon - suppose still a bit of uncertainty and he can only return when he is ready and unfortunately possible that may not be till after the summer. Wonder how well he'd be prepared for the upcoming events if he is fit enough but need to see.
Oh, I miss Andy so much but maybe it would be better not to rush. Give his body a little longer, forget the grass, play some small hard court tournaments to ease his way back in. Can't believe I just said that!!!! :wimcry:
Obviously he knows how he is though, and will do whatever he needs to. If that is to play the grass, then I will be happy & cheering hard for him. :grass:

Earlier this morning, Russell Fuller was back on radio five live and claimed that he really didn't want to see Andy limp on and off a court, because he wasn't ready. Yes it's looking unlikely - trouble is few professional athletes are ever 100% without injury - given that he's suffered for years with this - it's a tough one to achieve now.
I don't think anyone can really have been surprised that Andy pulled out of Rosmalen, given what he said in the short interview for the Jaguar promo. A couple of things about that video made me concerned - he was sitting down for a very short interview, and he looks so thin and pale! But if that is him just back on court now and starting training, I cannot see him playing Queens and Wimbledon. He'd surely be better forgetting the grass season and looking ahead to the US hard courts?

I hope and believe we will see Andy's best again. He said he will be back when 100%. My understanding of 100% is full health. From there, with patience, he can find his best again. As Teresa rightly said he's got nothing to prove to anyone, but for his own satisfaction he has probably got unfinished business. I can't see him retiring without nailing Aus. During Andy's absence only Fed and Rafa have won slams, that suggests there's an invisible bar in tennis set by the big 4 - I back Andy to regain the required level of fitness before other players gain the required level of talent. But more than anything I just want him to be playing and happy.

He does look thinner but maybe that is intentional to put less strain on the hip. Lean and lithe, better movement maybe .... and he probably looks pale because that's his natural colouring without the sun exposure he would normally get on court every day.

I am happy that Andy has made the "right" decision by not playing before he is ready. IT would be fantastic if that was the case. Fantastic!
But it does seem too soon given that he's only been practicing a few days.
Let's wait and see and hope it's right!

Need to see, however think it would be hardly be ideal to play Wimbledon without competitive matches beforehand (exhibitions not the same)

Well he may play - no-one is suggesting he will win it. He has to start somewhere. Better there than Queens where he is likely to be gone first round given strength of field.

Respectfully disagree, would rather he start his comeback at a tour event whether that be be Queen's or Possibly Eastbourne if Andy is ready. There is no guarantee of a "reasonable" draw at Wimbledon anyway.

Eastbourne would certainly be a good option and not too far from his home
Josephine
10-06-2018, 12:33
That is absolutely true. Realistically he has to start somewhere but my expectations are that he will lose first or second round. Then he starts the proper comeback which will take time. He may have more chance over 5 sets - only in that on grass 2 sets can be gone in the blink of an eye.
No matter really - but would be great to see him on the grass somewhere.

Personally, I'm with James on this one - smaller tournies like Shengzen, Vienna etc served Andy very well coming back from back surgery and struggling in bigger events so feel that's probably a good, confidence building approach this time as well. When booking for tickets for Eastbourne I quietly hoped Andy would make an appearance if he was ready to play again. My fingers remain x'd, but happy to just wait and see. Whenever you're ready, Andy, and not a moment sooner!

Really doesn't matter where first. I'm not bothered. Have no preference. But whatever happens I hope he is able to play Wimbledon.

I hope he is able to play Wimbledon simply because I know how gutted he will be to have it happening and not be there.

Yes, that's right. I remember he tried desperately to be able to play before having to accept that he couldn't.

I'm with you and James. Better to make his comeback in smaller tournaments that will help his ranking and build up his confidence than rush back to Queens and Wimbledon. I hope too that he will make an appearance at Eastbourne but Andy should only come back when he feels ready for it. It won't be easy for him but really hope for the best for him. We all miss him. :knight:
I seem to remember Agassi being out of the game for personal reasons for some time and as a result losing his ranking. He made his comeback in challenger events to boost his rankings and then went on to play the best tennis of his career.

Here is the direct link to the article http://lastwordontennis.com/2018/06/12/thanasi-kokkinakis-gives-insight-into-andy-murray-comeback-timeline/
“I actually saw him yesterday and I didn’t recognise him. I saw this guy at Raynes Park and I saw him walking towards me and thought that kind of look like Andy, it kind of looks like an accountant as well,” Kokkinakis told me, “And then he got closer and I was like ‘oh **** it is Andy.’”
What could make a three-time Grand Slam champion so unrecognisable? “He’s lost a bit of weight I think.” the Australian explained, and it is no surprise; to have Murray’s physique you need to be able to work at it every day. It seems like the Brit has not been able to train as much as he wants and that could be so demoralising for a player who thrives off of hard work.
I love to look on the bright side of everything, but if you are only hitting 45 minutes a day then surely you could not compete in a best-of-five, fourteen-day event that starts in less than a month. Kokkinakis would be surprised if he can make his return at the Queen’s Club, “So if he’s ready [for Queen’s], hats off to him.”
I'll leave everyone to make of this what they will

Bearing in mind that was earlier last week, I'd imagine his plan is to increase the time- and depending upon how that works out will help him decide.
Also fairly common for players not to spend over long on hitting balls as so much time is spent on other fitness aspects.

He's lost muscle - he's said before if he doesn't build muscle in his training then he loses weight.
Building muscle is how he increased his staying power when he first started professionally.
Not sure what that means regarding his fitness - but that's why he looks different.

Speaking at the inaugural UK Coaching conference in Edinburgh, she said: "I think he did really well yesterday, but this is about him just dipping his toe back in the water and seeing how his body holds up."
"Any athlete who has been out for a long time will tell you the same thing, you have to build up your physical fitness and your match fitness and you can only build that up by playing matches.
"I think for him it is about seeing how he is during the match, and how he is after the match.
"That is what tennis will demand of you; if you are playing in a tournament that lasts for a week and you get to the final, you have to play five matches in seven days.
"If you play a grand slam, you're playing seven matches across 13 days and the best of five sets, so you have to test yourself and see where you are at.
"I think he had a good match at Queen's last week and had a good match with Stan, so it's just baby steps."

Amazon Prime caught off guard by Murray
Amazon Prime did not expect to strike so lucky in their exclusive live coverage of ATP matches at the Nature Valley International in Eastbourne this week. The online broadcaster was not expecting Andy Murray to be part of the field, and that was shown in a no-frills offering. Their only presence at Devonshire Park was one post-match interviewer, with the commentary done from an off-site location.
The Slice understands that the BBC, who are broadcasting the WTA event in Eastbourne, attempted to obtain rights at the last minute to show Murray’s matches live but had to settle for highlights of just a few minutes.
Very good article in the Times
Times (https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/matthew-syed-interviews-andy-murray-you-have-to-give-everything-all-the-time-you-dont-know-what-life-has-coming-b6x2c7n7g) - Matthew Syed interviews Andy Murray: ‘I want to play for as long as possible – you don’t know what life has coming’
Murray has struggled with injury over recent months, something that has given him more time with his two daughters, but has also caused him to fall deeper in love with the game, not least because he realises, in an intense, almost existential way, that his time is limited. “Having been away for ten months with injury, I feel like I’m a lot better placed to give advice to younger players,” he says.
“Just because I know how much I missed playing. I didn’t have many injury troubles over the last 11 or 12 years. I realise as I am coming towards the latter stage of my career that I want to carry on for as long as I can, and I’ll really, really miss it. I would want to let younger players know that they need to make the most of every opportunity, every single week. Don’t just think it’s OK to not try your best one week. You should give everything all of the time because you don’t know what is around the corner. There might be a big injury. Make the most of this career, because it’s not there for ever.”
.........
The ability to deal with criticism is often cited as a necessity in top sport, but Murray has learnt to be fuelled by it. “Criticism is a huge motivation,” he says. “If someone was patting me on the back and telling me I was doing great all the time, I wouldn’t feed off that as much as someone telling me that I’m not fit enough or my serve isn’t good or I’m not mentally strong enough. While Murray (https://www.thesun.co.uk/who/andy-murray/) and fellow Scot McHugh were hitting on Court 14, a lady from the All England Club made her way through the crowd to deliver an urgent message to physio Shane Annun.
He immediately picked up an all-white long-sleeved top and threw it to Delgado.
The former British Davis Cup player had been wearing a white shirt with green and blue around the shoulders.
But All England Club rules are very strict about what can be worn, even for practice, if players and back-up team members on any of the match courts (as opposed to the Aorangi Park practice area).
Murray teased Delgado that his application to become a permanent member of the All England Club – he is currently only a temporary one – would now be refused.
And the Scot called after the All England Club lady, saying: “Sorry about him.”
But even after Delgado had changed, he was still in breach of regulations
The shirt he had been given had a logo on it which was bigger than permitted by the rules, so he had to take it off again and wear it inside out.

“We had a team dinner in Eastbourne last week,” Swan said on Thursday in a break from her final preparations for Wimbledon. “Andy’s always helping me with little things, but we didn’t talk about tennis so much this time. We talked more about the World Cup and Love Island. We’re all watching Love Island. Even if Andy says he doesn’t watch it, I can tell you he does.”

Isn't this wonderful news? Doctor knows best!
As an aside, I won't be on much over Wimbledon because although my little dog is doing brilliantly and very much on the mend, she's still not 100%. She has an appointment with the Supervet team in mid July and I'm very confident they will resolve the issue completely. Thank you so, so much for the very kind posts when I first mentioned the matter - you're lovely people and I hope you all enjoy every moment of Wimbledon. GO ANDY!!!!

Andy has withdrawn boohoo
So pleased your dog is doing well. Good to get some good news after the shock of Andy's withdrawal. I guess not totally unexpected; the words 'most likely to play' had been uttered but we chose to interpret that as 'definitely play' as he certainly did want to but the likelihood of 5 set matches was always a big ask.

Hope Rosiebear is improving. I read an article on Telegraph online about Andy’s withdrawal and his efforts over the last year, in the last paragraph the reporter referred to the fact that Andy has been able to spend more time with his daughters Sophia and Eadie. So now we know the name, if I remember correctly around the time of her birth someone from the Murraynators did say they thought her name was Eadie.

A lot less classical than Sophia.
.................. but Eadie Murray rolls off the tongue more easily than Sophia Murray, don't you think?

Matthew Syed also referred to Edie (that's how he spelt it) in a Times article last week
Matthew Syed also referred to Edie (that's how he spelt it) in a Times article last week
It is spelt both ways, so now the big question is which one???? ....
I've never seen Edie spelled Eadie, so maybe the journalist made a mistake? On the other hand, parents these days seem to want to have something different for their children's names. I see all sorts of strange spellings of names at Sunday School.

If you look the name up in baby names it says the name can be spelt Edie or Eadie, derived from Edith.
I've only ever seen Eadie as a surname.
Your right, it can be used as a surname or a given name

Andy interview on BBC on iPlayer - available as I write if you go to Live BBC Wimbledon coverage and click back to 16.50 Andy talking about how close he was to coming back, his plans to play in Washington, etc. With Sue and Tim. Some training footage as well.

Really really worth it. I thoroughly enjoyed it. Lasted a good half hour or so. Apparently he is likely to be commentating on the second match on Centre tomorrow, Rafa/Delpo, alongside Tim. Not often we look forward so eagerly to a match because of who is commentating!!

Ditto here too.
I got to see some of it between the Serena Williams match and Murray and Soares match. I was wondering if the BBC really would do that 'who is more boring' out of Tim and Andy.

Really lovely to see Andy - what a treat.
He says not playing is the best decision he's made - that his hip feels better on the hard courts.
Lots of lovely banter between him and Tim - apparently he texts Tim when he's commenting to tell him how to do it better.
Tim even suggested they had a competition to see who would be the most boring of the two of them!
What is really clear about Andy is his high level knowledge of all the player and their games.
He thinks Novak could win the whole tournament as he's got his passion back!
Thanks for the snippets from Andy. I can't see it here in USA. :(

Just listened to my recording from this afternoon. Totally agree about how knowledgeable Andy is about other players’ games. Must record Rafa v Del Po to see how Andy gets on
An excellent interview. Andy was relaxed and had lots of interesting things to say.

Just watched it. Very impressed about how articulate and knowledgeable Andy was and also he is not afraid to state his opinions. He will make a great pundit/commentator. Henman must be worried about losing his role as fave BBC Wimbledon pundit once Andy retires. ;)

Really enjoyed the interview though and will be fascinated to hear Andy's commentating. Not sure this has happened before on the BBC - a currently active top player commentating on his/her peers. I'm sure Andy will provide lots of insight
One thing is for sure with Andy.....there will be no inane and mindless comments. Sure there'll be a bit of banter but that will be fun.

I really enjoyed the chat with Sue and Tim yesterday. Wonderful to see Andy looking well and relaxed. Wasn't surprised by his knowledge and comments on tennis and other players as he's always been well informed and definitely knows his stuff. Loved the banter between his pal Tim and looking forward to the commentary later.
Disappointed that Andy didn't find time to wish Croatia well. :pirate:
