Nole's press interview after beating Andy - http://www.australianopen.com/en_AU/news/interviews/2013-01-27/201301271359295734706.html
First part of transcript below
Q. Last year you were in here about 4:00 in the morning. This is a good time to finish, I guess.
NOVAK DJOKOVIC: Relatively early (smiling).
Q. How hard was that match for you tonight?
NOVAK DJOKOVIC: It's hard. I mean, when you play one of your biggest rivals and somebody that is in the top form in finals of a Grand Slam, there is a lot to play for.
I think it went 2 hours, 20 minutes, the first two sets. I think that says enough about the intensity of the match.
I kind of expected that. I knew that it's going to be physically very demanding, a lot of long rallies, so I needed to hang in there. I've done that. There was a few turning points in the match. Maybe one of them was the second game in the second set when I was Love 40 against the breeze. He missed a few shots. I managed have that crucial hold.
After that I felt just mentally a little bit lighter and more confident on the court than I've done in the first hour or so.
Q. Anything noticeably different you did from the US Open final to here?
NOVAK DJOKOVIC: All our matches in last three years have been decided in a very few points, so it's really hard to say if I've done anything different.
Yeah, I tried to be more aggressive. So I went for my shots, especially in the third and fourth; came to the net quite often. I was quite successful in that percentage, so it worked well for me.
I needed to be the one who dictates the play, and I'm really glad that I've played my best.
Q. How does this compare with the others you've won, the feeling?
NOVAK DJOKOVIC: Every tournament, especially the major tournaments, is very special. So every win, of course also adding to that the history part, you know, winning it three in a row, it's incredible. It's very thrilling. I'm full of joy right now.
It's going to give me a lot of confidence for the rest of the season, that's for sure.
Q. You and Andy are two of the best returners in the game, but it took over 30 games in this match before anybody broke. Why do you think that was tonight?
NOVAK DJOKOVIC: Well, we both served well, I think. We were holding our service games quite comfortably.
I was serving better against him today in the first two sets than I've done in any of the match in the last two years. But I knew that he's incredible returner and has that ability to make you play always an extra shot.
To be able to get a lot of free points on the serve was definitely a positive.
Q. Andre Agassi always played very well in this tournament. You got the trophy from him tonight. Is there something similar in your attitudes, styles, that means you tend to start the season in such terrific form?
NOVAK DJOKOVIC: Maybe the style of clothing that we had. He had many colors and I love colors, so on that regard maybe there is some similarities.
But, no, also he's I think one of the players that changed the game not just the game itself, but also the way the people see it. He's a legend of the sport, of course. He had so much success. He won everything: Gold medal, Olympic Games, Grand Slam, everything.
Also he made a huge impact on the sport by changing the style. He was I think one of the first baseline groundstroke players on the tour. Most of the players before him were playing serve and volley. That's where the game started to change a bit and you could have more players winning the events from the baseline.
So it was obviously a big pleasure and honor for me to receive the trophy from him.
Q. Another major and another semifinal with three of the top four and two of the top four winning. Do you think the gap is closing at all or is the gap growing with the rest of the field?
NOVAK DJOKOVIC: I think that's a question that can be always asked. I don't find a really great answer for that. As I was saying before, it is logical in a way to expect the top four players to be the main contenders to win the trophy.
But I never want to underestimate the rest of the field, the rest of the players, especially the ones in the top 10, the top 15. I was a few points away from losing the match against Wawrinka in the fourth round here. That says enough about the competitiveness of the sport and the quality that other players bring. And he's around 15 in the world.
So it is possible. It is possible for them to make a breakthrough, to win against the top guys in major events. Tsonga, Del Potro, Ferrer, these guys have done it in the past. Berdych. It's always a possibility.
But I guess the top four are the most dominant ones in last five years.
Q. What are your goals for the rest of the season? Is the French Open a priority for you now?
NOVAK DJOKOVIC: Priority for me now is to enjoy this victory. In life, you know, you don't get many of the opportunities to win Grand Slams. As a tennis player, that's a pinnacle of the ambitions and of the success.
So I try to enjoy it for few days with the people I love the most, family, friends, and team.
And then after I turn to the rest of the season. It's Davis Cup already coming up, indoors, clay courts, next weekend, so that's going to be a lot of fun (smiling).
And then after that, obviously there is still four or five months till the French Open. Of course, I want to go all the way in French Open. I went to the finals last year and had a great match against Rafa, but he's always the favorite on that surface and he's the ultimate player to beat on clay.
But I think if I continue on playing well, stay healthy, I can have a chance.
Q. You had tough losses to Rafa and Roger and Andy in the last three Grand Slams coming in here. Going into today, any special motivation saying that you wanted another Grand Slam title?
NOVAK DJOKOVIC: What more motivation you need than from this trophy? Just seeing it and reading the names of the winners in last 50, 100 years, it's incredible. To be also mentioned in the history aspect, you know, and winning three in a row, it's a huge achievement.
So I'm always motivated in every match that I play on. But of course Grand Slam finals are always bringing something new, something special to every player, and that's where you want to perform your best.

:thanks: for all the links.
Interesting to read in The Independent article linked above, Andy's comments about his returns and shot-making, and how he felt his tactics were right.
I hope though, that Lendl will point out to him how many times Djokovic came to the net and how many easy points he consequently won there. Also, continue to drum into him the importance of length and angle of shots, and judging the right moments to get up to the net himself, thus helping to shorten the points and not put so much stress on his body.
Fingers crossed.

"It's good for me, it's what I needed," said Murray, who was playing his first tournament since the Australian Open as he focused on training.
"I needed to play matches and I have to also look at the bigger picture as well. After taking a break you can't expect to play your best tennis straight away.
"I hope having played four matches, especially against a high-quality opponent like today in Juan, that will help me in the next few weeks."

Ridiculous headline from the Telegraph - and laziness for not bothering to come up with something original. If it had been R1 (or in this case R2) it would make a bit more sense since, as the 3rd seed, he's clearly expected to go a lot further. But to use that term after he's won 3 matches and fought a battle in the QF's is just un-necessary.

Really glad andy is taking it this way. I think the problem is we always think he will win everything where as Andy is looking at the bigger picture! Maybe to him any wins in IW were going to be a bonus as his first tourny back. It also gave him half the points he needs to overtake Roger........

It is, of course, Rafas first tourney back--after a lot longer--and he has reached the final ! Andy just hasn't yet found the ruthless confidence of djok or RAfa and so does not command the fear that the other two do. I do believe it will happen, it's nearly there but not quite

To have Lendl back alongside him this week will, Murray thinks, make a huge difference.
“Having him around helps everyone because of his experience, his understanding of the game and these sort of situations,” Murray said. “When I spoke to him after my last match and I wasn’t happy with the way I played, he’s very much ‘don’t worry about it, you can’t expect to play perfect after taking a break like that’.
“He also knows the conditions in Indian Wells are trickier for some guys than others. Ivan didn’t like the desert, in terms of the way the court played and how fast the balls were. I need to find a way to play better in these conditions, but having him around can help with that because he understands.”

“I would hope by Miami I should be playing much better than I did last week. I obviously know the conditions well there, I practice there regularly, I’m comfortable in Miami. I feel like when I play on those courts I can open up a bit more, play aggressive and time the ball better so I would hope that if I can get through a round or two in Miami I’ll start to play better and better.”

Attacking midfielder – Alongside Roger Federer, tasked with the creative side of the game. Our number 10 needs to be a genuinely talented footballer – which is why there’s no other choice than Andy Murray. For so long derided as too defensive, one might think that he’s the last player to chose as the attacking midfielder – but his shot variety and tactical nous gets him the game. There doesn’t seem anyone better at working out an opponent’s game and finding the weaknesses to exploit. That’s exactly what’s needed in this position, a player able to find that key to unlock the defense.

An interview with
ANDY MURRAY
THE MODERATOR: Questions, please.
Q. Is there a home court advantage here in Miami?
ANDY MURRAY: For me?
Q. Yes.
ANDY MURRAY: Well, I think it should help, yeah. I have trained in these conditions a lot, and obviously it can get extremely humid here.
You know, I find the conditions quite tricky in Indian Wells last couple years, extremely different from the conditions from here, how I train and practice.
I hope so.
Q. Two of the greatest tennis players in the world are going to be absent: Nadal and Federer. How do you feel this will affect the overall tournament and who gets into where?
ANDY MURRAY: I mean, obviously Rafa has missed a lot of the last six or seven months. You know, I think the tour obviously misses or missed him, but I think from all of the tournaments that I was involved in, you know, there was still great crowds. I think tennis is still in a good, very good place.
But, yeah, ideally it's good if you have those guys here because they obviously add a lot to the tournament. They have, like you say, unbelievable tennis players, great history.
Yeah, it's a shame.
Q. Would you consider Sony Open to be a fifth Grand Slam?
ANDY MURRAY: I mean, it's tough to say. I think a lot of the tournaments are kind of competing for that title now as sort of the biggest tournament outside of the Slams. Indian Wells has done a fantastic job last few years. I think Shanghai has also done a great job.
But, I mean, for me personally obviously I love it here. That's why I come here. They have great crowds, you know, especially in the evenings. They get great, great atmosphere.
You know, the crowd are very enthusiastic. Yeah, you just need to make sure that you stay on par with the other events. It's done a good job the last few years.
Q. Your first round opponent hasn't been decided...
ANDY MURRAY: Tomic just won.
Q. Have you played him recently?
ANDY MURRAY: I played him last year in Australia, in Brisbane.
Q. How do you feel he's come on since then?
ANDY MURRAY: It's always tough to know. It's always tough to know until you play against him and see. He obviously played really well at Wimbledon a couple of years ago. That was his best slam. He's always performed well in Australia.
You know, I'll see obviously when I play against him. I haven't seen him play that much outside of Australia the last year or so.
But, yeah, he's a very, very talented player. You know, he makes it tough for everyone. He's got a very unorthodox game style.
Q. (Indiscernible as a result of camera clicking.)
ANDY MURRAY: I started the year well. I played Brisbane and Australia, and hopefully this week I will play a little bit better than I did last week. I just want to make sure that each week I keep improving and getting a little bit better.
But I feel good. You know, you can't win every tournament you play, but so long as you give yourself an opportunity and prepare well for the events, that's the best you can do.
I have done that well so far this year.
Q. I know you've worked out of UM. Have you talked to any of the UM coaches or players?
ANDY MURRAY: Mario Rincon, who is the head coach there, I obviously spoke to him quite a lot because Danny who I work, with he went to UM and was part of the tennis program there for a number of years.
So for a couple years we used the courts there. We were allowed to use the running track and the footballers' gym.
I haven't used it at all the last two, three years. We have been training here because it's extremely quiet. They got quite tight with security at UM. It was actually quite tough to get in and get to use the facility.
So we just came here, and this is perfect.
Q. Latest figures heard from the U.S. Tennis Association there is a $50 million prize pot for 2017. I know you did a lot of work with big three players last year get better pay. It's what you guys are all working toward to make tennis more attractive to young sports people.
ANDY MURRAY: I think for the tour just now also I think the players are very valuable to the events, and, you know, I think now the prize money is starting to reflect that.
So it's great that, you know, all the conversations at the ATP and the players have been having with the USTA, you know, and the guys that run the US Open have been beneficial and have been very positive.
It's good that things are moving in the right direction. Hopefully that continues to be the case, but it's a big step forward.
Q. Without Nadal and Federer, is it more easy to win Sony Open?
ANDY MURRAY: Well, yeah, you would think so, but, you know, not every tournament do you have to play against Nadal and Federer. Sometimes, you know, they lose early or whatever. You need to make sure that you get into a position in the event where you would have to play them, which is normally in the semifinals or finals.
But, yeah, I mean, it's for sure not as difficult if you don't have two of the best players ever playing in a tournament.
Q. I have been asking a few of the players about what they're not good at. Obviously you play tennis exceptionally well, but besides that, what are you not good at that you can't do that you would really like to do well?
ANDY MURRAY: Sport or just anything?
Q. Anything. Whether it's cooking to sport to singing.
ANDY MURRAY: Singing is not good. (Laughter.)
Singing is not good. Yeah, cooking is not good. I mean, most sports I'm okay at. Basketball is a sport I really like. I'm terrible at. I never played it when I was growing up, but I like it. I watch it a lot, but I'm terrible at basketball.
Q. Out of anything, what would you really like to do well?
ANDY MURRAY: What would I really like to do well? I think it would be good to be a really good dancer, like Monfils is a great dancer. He dances really well.
Yeah, I think dancing would be good.
Q. Have you been to any Heat games or talked to any players? They are on a 24 game winning streak. Have you talked to any of them recently?
ANDY MURRAY: No, I hopefully will go to the game tomorrow if I can. I think they also play on Sunday at home, as well. But then the rest of the time they're playing away.
I went to see a couple of games before Indian Wells. I saw when they were playing at home. But, yeah, only two of the games, but it's been unbelievable. I watched the game last night, and it was an amazing comeback.

Once I got ahead, I mean, I was just trying to make a lot of balls at the start. You're never going to feel great your first match, especially when it's tricky conditions and with his game style, too. He mixes the play up a lot. It's tough.
I just tried to make loads of balls. I don't know if he was tired or struggling with the humidity, but he was playing pretty low percentage tennis. With the conditions like they were today, that played into my hands.
Q. Do you see a bit of you in him in his style of play?
ANDY MURRAY: Yeah, I think both of us obviously play with quite a lot of variation, you know, and, yeah, there's definitely some similarities there.
You know, he probably hits the ball flatter than me off both sides, you know, can probably generate more power. But I probably move a bit better than him. There are probably the differences, but we definitely play a similar style.
Q. You're up against one of the other players that's coming up that's talked about a lot as a potentially good player, top of the game for the future. You have played them both a couple of times. How would you compare them? Which is better?
ANDY MURRAY: I don't know. It's tough to say. I mean, you know, Grigor is probably a better athlete. But I think, you know, like tennis IQ I think, you know, Bernard knows how to play tennis. He has very good anticipation. He has great feel.
Grigor has very good feel, as well.
You know, Bernard is a really big guy. He sometimes doesn't he kind of hunches over a bit, but he's 6'4", 6'5". He's a big guy.
That can help, too. It's tough to say who's better. They have had similar results. Maybe Bernard, he's done better in the slams and obviously won a tournament. Grigor has played well this year.
Q. Do you think he deserved the unfriendly reception some of the crowd gave him? Was that fair?
ANDY MURRAY: I don't know. I mean, I obviously just try to concentrate on my side of the court.
The one thing I would say is that if you aren't used to playing in these conditions, it is extremely hot and tough to play. You know, it is tough when you're going behind and making quite a lot of mistakes.
I have done it before when my head has gone down and you still want to win, but it doesn't always appear that way.
So I don't know. The crowd, they're free to do whatever they want. They pay the money and they can greet players however they would like.
Q. Did you make it to the Heat game last night?
ANDY MURRAY: Didn't go. I enjoy going, but obviously the games finished pretty late, so I was in bed by the end of the game.
Q. Are you happy or disappointed that Federer or Nadal are no longer, you know, in the future path of you in this tournament? How do you see the path that you have left?
ANDY MURRAY: I have played so many tournaments with everyone playing. It's not something that when the draws sort of come out it's not necessarily something I always look at.
But when you know they aren't going to be here, then it obviously changes things a little bit. Changes where your position in the draw is going to be.
Yeah, for tennis it's way better if all of the top players are here. I think we have been very lucky the last few years especially that, you know, a lot of the top players have fulfilled their commitments to all of the big events.
So it's going to happen from time to time, and it's unfortunate for this event that it happened here.
Q. Do you think these courts are too slow? Would you like hard courts faster than they generally seem to be at the moment?
ANDY MURRAY: It's faster here than it was at Indian Wells. The courts in Indian Wells are extremely slow, and that's why I find it quite tricky to play there. The ball moves extremely fast through the air, and when it hits the court it checks. It really stops.
But here the courts aren't that slow. I mean, they painted these courts about over a month ago, because I was practicing on them when they painted them. A lot of the tournaments, they do that a few days beforehand. So it's not too slow.
But, you know, I think there should be a longer grass court season, and I think the more variety in the surfaces the better for the game. And also, you know, the longevity of the players, as well, you know, shorter rallies.
But if you look how long guys are playing now compared with back then, the guys that played serve and volley didn't last that long. Their joints and backs and stuff got hurt, as well. So it's tough to know exactly what's best for the body.

An interview with:
ANDY MURRAY
THE MODERATOR: Questions, please.
Q. He was swinging pretty big, wasn't he? Weathered the storm in the first set.
ANDY MURRAY: Yeah he did a similar thing when I played him in Brisbane, as well. I was hitting the ball quite short early, too, which helped him a bit with that.
Also, it was obviously way cooler today and much slower conditions. The ball wasn't going as quick. I was leaving the ball a bit short. Once I started to improve my depth a bit I made it tough for him and he started to make mother mistakes after that.
Q. When somebody has a bit of a double fault rash like that, do you almost feel you've earned that by pressurizing the serve?
ANDY MURRAY: Yeah, I mean, it depends. Sometimes it can happen through pressurizing the serves; sometimes it happens through nerves; sometimes you can miss a couple of serves by a couple of millimeters.
You know, there's not always a reason for it. But, yeah, today he probably got a little bit nervous, and that helped me.
Q. I want to ask you about Del Potro. He lost his first match, but he had a great start of the season. Do you think this can be the season that he can get closer to you, the top four players?
ANDY MURRAY: Yeah, I think I mean, the start of every year it's like a clean slate for everyone. Doesn't really matter what's happened in the past.
You need to play well, you know, most weeks if you want to get to the top of the game.
You know, I found it challenging you know, the last few years I have been in the top three or four through my results in the slams, not necessarily in the Masters Series.
So it's something I have been looking to improve and I think something that Juan will be wanting to improve, as well. He won Rotterdam, he played well in Dubai, he played well in Indian Wells, but probably didn't play his best in Australian Open and here.
Over the course of the year that affects the rankings. So, yeah, the only thing for him is just a little bit more consistency and he'll be very close.
Q. With Dimitrov making a bit of a breakthrough, do you think he's really improving his game? Is he any better than when you played anymore Brisbane?
ANDY MURRAY: He played very well in Brisbane. It was probably a better match I think in Brisbane than here. Yes, I mean, it's tough. It is tough to tell sometimes.
It's very different conditions here. You know, Brisbane was almost an indoor court, as well, and it probably felt quicker, also.
But I think he will play his best tennis on the faster courts because he has very good timing. He loses his slice a lot. He serves well. He's aggressive. So he will probably play his best tennis on the quicker courts.
Q. You'll play Andreas Seppi next. Can you assess that, a guy who has come into his own the past 12 months?
ANDY MURRAY: Yeah, it's a tough match. He's solid from both sides; doesn't have any major weaknesses; he moves well.
Yeah, he's up at 14, 15 in the world, around that ranking. He's a solid player. He plays well on all of the surfaces.
Like I say, very few weaknesses. He's a tough guy for anyone to beat.

An interview with:
ANDY MURRAY
THE MODERATOR: Questions, please.
Q. How are you feeling? Because you looked like you did have a leg issue at one point.
ANDY MURRAY: Yeah, it was probably four or five points into the second set my right sort of hip, quad, like top of my right leg, was sore for a few games. Felt like something just caught a little bit.
But it was fine from 2 1 for him in the second. I felt okay.
Q. Would that be anything you need to look at tomorrow on the day off?
ANDY MURRAY: No, I don't think so. I felt fine after that. It feels fine now.
Normally, you know, if you pick up a little something, you know, when you cool down that after the match you feel it, and it feels fine just now. Stuff can get out of place on the court, and, you know, when you're moving again it starts to feel better or opens up again.
But, yeah, probably just did an awkward movement at one stage and was a bit sore for a few games.
Q. Can you tell us about the playing conditions? Because it was quite different from a couple of days ago. Was it a lot tougher today to end the points?
ANDY MURRAY: It was cold, so, yeah, it slows the court down a bit.
And also, it was a very strong breeze. So, you know, when it's cool and there is a strong breeze on the court from one of the ends, it's very difficult to hit through the court and to be the one dictating the point.
So you end up playing a lot of defense from one side, and then on the other side you're the one that's looking to be aggressive.
But still, you have to play with more topspin when you're with the wind, so you can't hit the ball as flat. So it's easier to force your opponent into errors, but it's not as easy to hit clean winners because you're having to give the ball more margin to try and make sure you basically take the wind into consideration when you're hitting the ball.
If you hit a flat ball with the wind, it's just going to sail out the back. So that's what happens when you play in the wind.
Q. Are you happy about the performance with your serve? Apart from the last game when you saved the break point, you basically haven't given him any chance.
ANDY MURRAY: Yeah, I served pretty well the first few matches. Served fairly high percentage of first serves.
Yeah, I mean, today I served well. You know, when I was down in games I served pretty good, too.
Yeah, I mean, that can change from day to day, but just keep working on it each day. Focus hard on each serve specifically.
I think if you lose concentration for a couple of points, that's when you can miss some serves and get yourself in trouble.
But I served well so far.
Q. You were saying to me the other night that you have to be a bit careful in training as you get older not to pick up niggles. The kind of twinges you had today, do they happen more for you now than they used to?
ANDY MURRAY: Yeah, probably, but, you know, I have been fairly lucky throughout my career with injuries so far.
You know, so I haven't withdrawn from many matches. I think maybe one since I have been on the tour when I hurt my wrist in Hamburg a few years ago.
So even when I have had things that hurt and niggle, you know, I have always tried to play through them. That sometimes may appear like, you know, I'm badly hurt on the court or whatever.
You know, a lot of players don't play through injuries and stop and give walkovers and lose matches through that.
So I have always tried to find a way through any niggles or whatever. And often, with 48 hours of rest, you know, you can feel much better.
Q. Does it make a difference now that you have that break? Is it an advantage?
ANDY MURRAY: No, not at all. I mean, last week the guys who were in the bottom half had an advantage. It's the same here as well, because obviously you play the last week you played quarters, semis, and final, Friday, Saturday, Sunday; whereas the others had a day off between that.
So it was definitely no advantage there.
Q. Because you're living in the area, do you consider these like home courts, or would you say Queen's would be more home courts or the All England? And when you do come here and play in the offseason, do you go to the center court specifically or whatever is available?
ANDY MURRAY: Yeah, I practice on that court all the time, on the center court here, so for me this is the court that I never practice on the grass courts at Queen's; I never practice on the grass courts at Wimbledon, either, because you're not allowed to during the year.
So, yeah, this is where I spend most of my time training. This is where I do go through a lot of my tough on court training sessions.
So, I would say that here is the court that I feel most comfortable on just because I train on it all the time.

lendl is human it seems ""I just enjoy working with Andy. He's a good person, a good player obviously and a good guy. Just being together and having fun is the enjoyable part." "
I've just read that and think Lendl is talking sense in relation to Andy. He's also a master of talking to the press and not actually telling them very much at all so that sentence you quoted is designed very well so they can't 'feed' off it. And they probably know they've been stymied.
;)
Where's the gibberish in this? it's the kind of analysis that most good coaches, and probably the players themselves, engage in on a daily basis when plotting to reach the top.
Djokovic currently leads the rankings from Federer, Murray and Nadal - and if those players still comprise the top four by the French Open, which starts on 26 May, Murray will be seeded to play one of them in the semi-finals.
However, if Nadal is overtaken by then and Murray leapfrogs Federer, there is a chance the Briton will be on the other side of the draw to all three and thus avoid them until the final.
Equally, though, it would be possible that seven-time champion Nadal could land in Murray's half and face him in the quarter-finals.
"The most important thing would be if Rafa is not in top form," said Lendl. "Then it becomes very tricky because you can be unlucky and play him in the quarters.
"Or you could be lucky and have Novak, Roger and Rafa in the other half of the draw, so that's where the biggest advantage of Andy getting to number two would be.
Agree with Sally. Mr Lendl at his masterful best in interviews - just saying what others have already said, that the main advantage of #2 ranking is in the seeding for French Open and Wimblers. Nice to see him smile though :)

Just seems like common sense. I already posted that the nightmare scenario for just about anyone is gettng Rafa in the QF at RG if he is seeded 5.
Who the big four play on their way to a potential final is very important to one of the other four, particular if they can get there without playing one of the others.
The only caveat I would have is that if Rafa is ranked 3 and 4, if Nole goes off the boil. there is a scenario where it is better to avoid Rafa in the SF then Nole. On the other hand, getting Roger in the SF seems the least worst option on present form.
So never perfect!

ANDY MURRAY: I think today was probably the best match for me. It was a tough, tough match. Second set especially was a lot of long, long games, tough points. Yeah, just managed to come through that. Obviously took a while to get to the finish line, but I thought I played a solid match, not too many errors and was tough in the important moments.
Q. You seemed to mix it up even more today than you do against some other guys. Was that because it was Marin or just the way you were feeling today?
ANDY MURRAY: I mean, it's not an easy thing to do unless you're feeling comfortable on the court. I think with each match I start to play a little bit better, feel a little bit more comfortable with the conditions.
Sort of been able to control the ball better, so using some slice and higher balls, and variation work went well today.
Q. He started to play particularly well around about the fourth game in the second set. Did you find your level rising as a result of that? Is that something that often happens?
ANDY MURRAY: Yeah, I think I mean, I played a long, tough game to hold. I think it was the 2-1 game. You know, he had a couple of break points and it was a really tough physical game.
And then after that, I mean, he started to play more aggressive. He started trying to come to net and trying to finish some of the points a bit quicker, and, you know, change his style a little bit. When guys make adjustments during matches, you obviously have to recognize that and do something about it yourself.
I think I dealt with that fairly well.
Q. Ivan said yesterday in the interview that if you get to No. 2 there is a possibility for the clay season that Rafa, Novak, and Roger could be in the same half. Is that something you have thought of at all?
ANDY MURRAY: It could also mean that I could also have all those guys in my quarter or half at the French Open, as well, you know. So, I mean, I always say before the major events, especially on the clay for me, there is no guarantees of me getting through any matches at the French Open. And, you know, I don't play well. That's a surface I have struggled on in the past.
But that's why the ranking system is there. You benefit from better draws the higher ranked you are normally, and that's what the benefit is whether it makes a difference at the French Open or wherever. You have to have to wait and see.
But here, for example, you know, the seeds don't always win, don't always come through. There's always upsets and stuff. And worrying about the quarterfinals or semifinals of the French Open is pointless for me at this stage, anyway. Such a long way away.
I'd like to get to No. 2 this week. It would be nice, but, you know, I'd rather focus on trying to win my matches.
Q. Speaking of the big three that are not here right now, when they're not in a tournament obviously you get some tough opponents like today, you have Berdych and Ferrer. When they're not here, do you miss them? Do you miss the challenge, or do you say, Hey, I get more confidence and it's better for me?
ANDY MURRAY: To be honest, I played loads of tournaments with them and loads of tournaments without them. It doesn't really change the way you approach the event.
You know, you go into most events, you know, trying to win them, but obviously if they aren't there, then, you know, you don't have to play against two or three of the best players that have played the game.
So it's not as challenging, but I always enjoy playing against them because it's good for me. It's a good test of my game especially when you're building up to a major event, for example. You know, they can expose anything you're not doing that well. You will see it more against those players and, you know, can actually help, you know, to improve some things going into the big tournaments.
Q. Marin seems to be playing well again, but he's not quite up to the top 10, hasn't gotten back there yet. Are you surprised he's not up there at least with the Berdyches or Tsongas of this world?
ANDY MURRAY: I mean, it's important to remember he is quite a bit younger than them. I think now, you know, it has taken guys are starting to play better later in their careers, especially the big guys, especially.
You know, he's a very, very good player. He's a tough player. But if you look at someone like Berdych, he's a very big, strong guy. Marin has maybe not filled out maybe as someone like Tomas or even Tsonga just now. It's just taking guys maybe a little bit longer than it was before to play their best tennis.
But this year I think he's played really well. He's lost, you know, some tight matches. Yeah, he also I mean, he had a knee surgery, I think, I mean, not that long ago. That also, especially for bigger guys, as well, that can set you back a little bit, but he's come back very well from it.
Q. What's the most challenging part of his game for you? What's the most impressive thing about him to you?
ANDY MURRAY: Of his game?
I mean, he does everything he does everything well. You know, he has a good serve. He's, you know, one of the better returners on the tour, which you may not expect for a big guy. But statistically he returns very well.
He has a very long reach, so from the back of the court, you know, he gets a lot of balls. He's not an easy guy to hit winners against.
He's improving all the time. He's started coming to the net more and volleying better all the time. He has a good all around game. He plays well on every surface. I think he's won tournaments on clay and on hard courts. He's had some good results on grass in the past, too. He's just a good, solid, all around player on all the courts.
Q. How big a surprise for you was it to see Novak lose to Del Potro and in consecutive weeks on hard courts? That was unexpected, don't you think?
ANDY MURRAY: I think any time the top players lose, you know, to someone ranked below them, yeah, is unexpected. But it does happen. I mean, a few years ago it was unexpected that Novak went on the run that he did, as well.
So there's always going to be a time where, you know, guys are going to struggle and lose the odd match or not play well for a couple of weeks. It happens, you know. He just happened to play some of his best tennis for almost two years in a row. He's hardly had any slip ups at all. I would say that's more unexpected than maybe not playing his best or, you know, maybe this week and didn't play his best I think he still played pretty well in Indian Wells, and I'm sure he'll be fine in the clay court season.
Q. Did you get to see the Heat game?
ANDY MURRAY: I saw most of it last night, yeah.
Q. Thoughts on it? Disappointed?
ANDY MURRAY: Well, it would have been nice to see them win or to keep the streak going, but, yeah, it's a very tough thing to do. It's still amazing what they managed to accomplish.
Q. Wondered what you thought about the Davis Cup lineup: Ward, Baker, and Tursunov, Donskoy. And do you give the British team a chance on that one?
ANDY MURRAY: Yeah, I think there's definitely a chance. I don't know exactly what the court surface is going to be like, you know, but the surface could help. And the Brits obviously playing at home, that helps.
Then the doubles, you know, we have a top doubles team, as well, and the doubles can always be a key rubber. Yeah, definitely, definitely a chance to win.

An interview with:
ANDY MURRAY
THE MODERATOR: Questions, please.
Q. Did it turn at the beginning of the second? Once you got that lead, were you feel more confident?
ANDY MURRAY: Yeah, the first set was a tough one to lose, because I obviously served for the set and then, you know, at the end of the set you kind of look up at the stats and I had hit over 20 winners and lost the set.
So I realized I had to cut out the unforced errors. I did a good job of that. Halfway through the second set I started to find the right way to play, the right shots to go for. Did well after that.
Q. How would you rate your overall performance tonight?
ANDY MURRAY: It was a good match. I could have made it easier on myself. I would have played a better game when I was serving for the first set, but I didn't.
I responded well from that, you know, and obviously he struggled in the third set with his movement. But, you know, I just had to take care of my own side of the net. I did a good job of that.
Q. The 30 somethings are having quite a tournament here. You face another one on Sunday. Do we have a trend on our hands? Is there something going on that's made the game more inviting for guys in their 30s, able to hang around longer?
ANDY MURRAY: Well, this is the thing. Everyone this week, it has been quite interesting. People are saying we need to speed up the courts because guys are not going to be able to play as long. But then, on the other hand, guys are reaching their peak later in their careers.
You know, a lot of the guys that used to play serve and volley had a lot of problems with their backs and their knees and hips, you know, and finished when they were 28, 29 years old.
I think now it seems like guys are able to play longer or guys maybe aren't breaking through at such a young age. You know, the average age at the top 100 has increased by a few years since I first came on the tour. I think, you know, the game has got more physical.
But, you know, guys are probably training better. You know, there is better training methods and people probably understanding how to recover from matches better and, you know, learning new things all the time about how the body works.
So that's probably one of the reasons why the older guys are doing better now.
Q. You see a guy like Haas, 34, can you envision yourself hanging around that long?
ANDY MURRAY: Who knows? The thing with Tommy, he has had a lot of injuries during his career. You know, he's quite a young 34 in that respect. He's missed probably three, four years, I would say, through injuries and various issues.
But, yeah, if the body permits, then, you know, I would hope so, but, you know, you never know. You know, you touch wood you don't have any surgeries, but that can happen and depends how you recover from them as you get older.
Q. Do you feel an expectation to win now that you're the last remaining member of the Big 4 in the tournament?
ANDY MURRAY: No. I mean, I don't really look into that too much during any of the events, because, you know, this tournament is a perfect example that you know, Novak obviously losing to Tommy is a big surprise. On any given day in an individual sport, if you play per match you're out of the tournament.
Whether the other guys, you know, around the top are here or not, it doesn't change my approach to any of the matches. David, after this week, will be in the top 4 again, and he deserves to be there because of his consistency. He's also started to play the last few years better in the big events. He made quarters of Wimbledon, semis of the French Open, semis of the Australian Open, semis of the US Open.
You know, he's not struggling to play well in the big events. So that's why he's there, and he'll be a very tough match on Sunday.
Q. You said before when you played Novak you prepare for a physical war. It's a bit like that with Ferrer, as well, isn't it?
ANDY MURRAY: Against all the guys, you know, the top of the game right now, the matches are very tough physically. Rafa is the same, as well.
When you play against him, you know, the points tend to be very physical because the guys move extremely well. You know, Ferrer has a great attitude on the court. He fights for every single point.
You're going to have to do more running than against some players that may be 30 Love or 40 Love, may just miss or give you a point almost. You know, it's not like that with him. He plays every single point hard, and that's why it's tough against him.
Q. Your Olympics doubles partner is in the final here. Did you follow her match today?
ANDY MURRAY: I didn't see it. We were on our way over here when the match was going on, so, yeah, I haven't seen any of the doubles this week.
But, no, it's very good for Laura, you know, winning matches at this level. You know, it gives you confidence whether it's singles, doubles, mixed doubles, whatever. It doesn't really matter.
So it will be good for her to have done well here.

“I never talk to myself. Not out loud," Murray said. "You would never catch me walking around the house and actually saying things to myself. Isn’t that supposed to be the first sign of madness? That is why that toilet break was so unusual. I stood in front of the mirror with sweat dripping down my face and I knew I had to change what was going on inside. I had a drink, a change of T-shirt and a banana with me, but they didn’t really matter. I had to get a grip of my mind. So I started talking. Out loud.
“‘You are not losing this match,’ I said to myself. ‘You are NOT losing this match.’ I started out a little tentative, but my voice got louder. ‘You are not going to let this one slip. You are NOT going to let this slip. This is your time. You have never been closer than this to a grand slam. Give it everything you’ve got. Leave nothing out there.’ At first, it felt a bit weird, but I felt something change inside. I was surprised by my response. I knew I could win.”

Just spent £1.50 on the Times - think that's the first time I've ever bought it - but what a lovely article! I especially loved the bit where they said Andy was getting a lot of ribbing from Rob when he was being prepared for the photo shoot!!!
The Times article is a good read but it's written very much from the premise that Andy has changed as a person since winning the US Open when we know he's always been an easy going but emotional guy, very considerate of others and dedicated to his sport. Matthew Syed writes that Andy wouldn't have taken part in a "stylised" photo shoot like this previously, obviously hasn't done his research. There are some good quotes from Andy about the tone of his voice and the relationship with his family but Syed reveals his bias with this quote:
"he knows there are 3 men in other parts of the world attempting to get an edge over him: Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and the sublime Roger Federer"
Was that really necessary? :raspberry: ;)
Have we seen reports from 'The Boar' before on here? It's just been brought to my attention. Here's an old article on Andy - Andy Murray’s watershed year (http://theboar.org/sport/2012/nov/27/andy-murrays-watershed-year/) - sorry if it's been posted before.

Murray saved a match point to force the tiebreaker with a forehand that was in by a few millimeters. In the 29-year history of this tournament, no men's winner had ever saved a match point. Murray won seven of eight points in that final frame.
We mention this because if you don't subscribe to Tennis Channel, you probably missed it. CBS, in its final broadcast here, elected to leave the match before the tiebreaker to go to its coverage of the NCAA basketball tournament, the South regional final between Florida and Michigan.

An interview with:
ANDY MURRAY
THE MODERATOR: Questions, please.
Q. Such a hard earned win. Does it feel more special because of that?
ANDY MURRAY: Yeah. I mean, it's taking a little while to sink in, because it's tough to think really at the end of the match. It was so tough physically and mentally that you were just trying to play each point.
I wasn't thinking too much only because I was so tired and not too many nerves at the end of the match, either.
So, yeah, I'm sure, you know, tomorrow and whatever, you know, I will realize that today, you know, I think it was an exciting match. I don't think either of us played our best tennis. There was a lot of breaks and ups and downs, quite a lot of mistakes from both of us.
But what I did do was fight hard, you know, showed good mental strength to get through that match, because it easily could have slipped away from me.
Q. I believe you're a big boxing fan. It seemed like a heavyweight fight out there, the ways you were staggering and hurting and exhausted. You carried on. Can you talk about your boxing training? Does it help you in situations like this?
ANDY MURRAY: I mean, I have watched a lot of boxing training. Never sort of implemented any of it into my training, because you have to be very careful with the wrists and stuff.
But, yeah, I mean, it was a brutal, brutal match today. I mean, yeah, both of us were kind of on our last legs. Good it wasn't a best of five set match, because I don't know how the last few sets would have ended up.
But, yeah, it was one of the toughest matches, you know, I have had to play in a Masters Series, for sure.
Q. At the awards you began your speech by you said some really nice things about David. Do you just have a little bit of guilt for having pulled off the win?
ANDY MURRAY: No, but, I mean, we both get on very well with each other. I mean, I train with him a lot, practice with him all the time.
I don't think he gets the respect that he deserves within the game. He's been, you know, in the top 5 in the world now for I mean, it's at least three years. You know, he's on course to possibly do that again. It's a very difficult thing to do, especially with his age. He's improved every single year, you know, his game. That takes, you know, a great attitude to be able to do that, you know.
You know, he's always getting better. Providing his body holds up, he'll be around the top of the game for as long as he wants or he can, because he's a very, very, very good tennis player and has a great attitude.
Q. Down a match point, can you take us through that point that maybe was the boost when that shot was upheld?
ANDY MURRAY: Yeah, well, he actually put the forehand back in play and stopped you know, he stopped the point. So, you know, it was good for me that I didn't have to hit another shot, because obviously on match points, it can be tough to, you know, pull the trigger. But I went for that forehand and, you know, obviously just dropped in in the last second.
Yeah, it is tough to, you know, going into the tiebreak for him having lost that game where he's had a match point and, you know, it was centimeters away from being his match.
That's probably why he didn't play such a strong tiebreak.
Q. I'm thinking about the training you did between the Australian and this one. Would you ascribe some of the fact you came through this one to the work you did then?
ANDY MURRAY: I think just general freshness, really. You know, a lot of the guys were maybe a little bit tired after, you know, because after Australia a lot of guys play three tournaments between, you know, between Australia and Indian Wells.
I felt fairly fresh this week. Last week in Indian Wells was a struggle for me. I didn't play so well there.
But then here I felt better, and today I think being fresh helped even though the tennis wasn't great. I just managed to get over the line in the end.
Q. You said you didn't know what would happen in the fourth and fifth set. What made this as tough if not tougher than the five sets you played against Djokovic in the US Open?
ANDY MURRAY: Conditions. I mean, started playing at 7:00 in the evening, and it was very windy and cold conditions. When we finished the match, it was cool.
You know, remember Rafa and Novak played here a couple years ago in a three set match and Rafa was I think in hospital after the match. You know, the conditions in Miami are extremely hard. It was very, very humid today.
Yeah, sometimes pressure and nerves or tension or whatever can add to that, as well. Yeah, there was a fair amount riding on the match. It was a big match for both of us, and I think that showed in some of the way that we played.
Didn't play necessarily our best tennis, and, you know, I was up a lot and couldn't close the match out. So, I mean, that's why matches like these ones are tough, because, you know, the humidity here is brutal.
Q. It looked like you tweaked your ankle late in the third set.
ANDY MURRAY: Yeah. I mean, it was a good job I had my ankle braces on because yeah, I mean, I guess if you watch the replay, I was expecting him to hit the backhand cross court and hit the backhand up the line, and, yeah, my left ankle that's why I wear the ankle braces, to stop that from going completely over.
Q. Did it slow you down?
ANDY MURRAY: No. I was slow at that stage, anyway. (Laughter.)
I wasn't running as freely as I was at the start of the match. Neither of us were. But, I mean, it feels absolutely fine. I mean, I got up straightaway and knew that it was nothing serious.
Q. Were you aware that CBS left the match going into the tiebreaker to switch to the basketball tournament?
ANDY MURRAY: No.
Q. What's your reaction to that? I know you're a basketball fan, but is it a bit of a commentary on the state of tennis in the sports land here or perceived state of tennis that they wouldn't show the tiebreak?
ANDY MURRAY: I don't think in sports land. I think tennis is a huge sport. Basketball, you know, doesn't really get in Europe, anyway, tennis is a much bigger sport. Obviously here, you know, the college system is I mean, it's unbelievable.
I mean, they get great viewing figures. They get great crowds going to the matches. It's obviously a shame that we didn't get to see the end or people didn't get to see the end of I think what was a pretty exciting match, but that's the way it goes sometimes.
Q. Can you comment on being back up to No. 2 in the rankings? How important is it this time around compared to the previous time you got to No. 2?
ANDY MURRAY: I think just purely because I was getting asked about it quite a lot, and it's nice just to have been able to do it this week. So I don't have to go into Monte Carlo or Madrid or Rome and kind of be worrying or thinking about that.
I mean, for me it doesn't change a huge amount, but the fact that I'm moving up the rankings is a good sign. You know, I have been winning a lot of matches. My consistency has been better over the last few months. The rankings obviously reflect that.
So I will try and keep working hard during the clay and hopefully, you know, I can go higher.
Q. In the couple seconds you had before finding out whether your ball was good or not, did you have time to even think about it, get worried, anything?
ANDY MURRAY: It felt good, and the fact that he kind of mishit the forehand you know, generally when the ball hits the line, it skids through quite a lot, and it seemed to me like that was what happened.
And also, he also didn't look that convinced that the ball was out. Obviously there's a thought that it could be out, but it felt good.
Q. Also, I believe this is the first time someone has saved match point in the decisive set, in a tiebreaker [sic]?
ANDY MURRAY: In this tournament? Yeah, I wouldn't know. But I mean, it does happen quite a lot on the tour. I think it maybe happened a little bit more a few years ago just because when the courts were quicker and stuff it was easier for guys to serve their way out of trouble; whereas that's not the case these days.
Q. A lot of players are struggling with the 25 second rule. Do you think the clock on court will help?
ANDY MURRAY: I think it would help just because, you know, as a player, you know, when you're playing in a tiebreak like that at the end of the match, you know, I'm not thinking about how long I'm taking between the points.
You know, if you have the clock there on the court, the crowd can see it, the players can see it. Everyone knows whether someone is going over or not and not just the umpire. Because, you know, you can ask the umpire how long you took after a point, and often they don't actually know exactly how long it was.
So I think if there was a clock on the court, then that would help the players to concentrate better.
Q. You had so many chances in the first set, and it seems like a lot of break points, making errors after errors, which was very frustrating for you. Was it the conditions that were bothering you initially, or what was the reason why...
ANDY MURRAY: Yeah, I think a little bit of that. I mean, it was very warm today, and, you know, the previous matches in the evenings were very, very different.
Yeah, it was frustrating, because I think four of the first five games I had game points in, and I found myself 5 Love down.
That was tough. But, yeah, I mean, it could be a lot of things. I mean, he started the match pretty well. He started better than me. Yeah, the conditions a little bit. There's always going to be some nerves in the final, as well. When you get yourself behind early, that's sometimes tough to come back from.
Q. Just wondered when you spoke to the supervisor in the final set, was that about the injury...
ANDY MURRAY: Well, he just came on. He came onto the court. I didn't call for the supervisor to come onto the court.
He just came to explain what was happening, and I just asked if there was another physio to see me, which there wasn't. At that stage I didn't want to delay the match by waiting for the physio to finish on him and then see me.
Q. When you train with David, is that here?
ANDY MURRAY: No, just I mean, in preparation for tournaments, you know, the week before slams, I will often practice with him. I practiced with him a couple of times before the tournament started here.
But, yeah, I mean, I don't go to Valencia to train and he doesn't come here to train. It's normally just pre events. You know, we practice and play a lot of sets together.
Q. Did you know him when you trained in Barcelona as a teenager?
ANDY MURRAY: No. I never practiced with him then.
Q. Medical attention? Did you need medical help after this match, intravenous fluids, anything like that?
ANDY MURRAY: I haven't done any of that. I just took a lot of liquids afterwards and tried to get, you know, as much food down me as possible, because obviously, you know, you're pretty depleted, you know, at the end of a match like that.
So, yeah, I saw physios, got stretched and massaged and drunk probably about a liter and a half of fluid when I came off to try and get hydrated.
Q. After you won, was it more a feeling of pure exhaustion or jubilation, or are you too tired to realize?
ANDY MURRAY: Yeah, I think yeah, you're obviously extremely happy, and then but, yeah, at that moment both of us were really, really tired. I mean, you know, he was obviously disappointed at the end, but, you know, from neither of us there wasn't a huge contrast in how either of us were after the match, because we were both in the locker room afterwards, you know. I wasn't up celebrating with my team. You know, we were just kind of sitting there, because, yeah, we're just incredibly, incredibly tired after a match like that.
That was how I reacted afterwards is just really, really tired, glad that you managed to come through it, and, you know, have some fun this evening.

Thanks Cazza - I was just reading it on the tournie website (strangely, it's dated 20.3.12 on there ). It sheds a lot of light on why it was such a hard match. And I'm relieved to see that there's no mention of back pain - I was convinced at the end of the match that Andy's back was hurting and I woke up this morning still worrying about it. It's just as well he's not playing DC as he will need to rest this week.

After a match like Ferru and Andy had, to go through that ritual, keep smiling for the cameras, wave to everyone, sign for the fans must be so so tiring. OK, its part of the job (and one they are happy to have to undergo I'm sure) but they must be just aching for some peace and quiet, a nice hot bath and a comfy armchair

I think it's blue and gold, not green. Either way it's better than the white and gold IMO.
