Scotsman (http://www.scotsman.com/sport/tennis/judy-murray-turned-down-lta-job-1-3116775) - Judy Murray ‘turned down LTA job’
She said: “I’ve learned over the last few years when Andy’s been in big finals, it’s very important you don’t show your nerves to him in anyway and since Ivan (Lendl) came in he’s helped all of us to be much calmer and shown us how to behave before those really important moments, because as a parent your kids pick up everything from you and you have to be really careful about how you present yourselves to them.”
Murray also revealed a more practical reason behind Lendl’s desire for calm - her vocal encouragement was hurting the coach’s ears. She said: “The first time I sat behind (Lendl) in a match at Wimbledon last year, he turned around and said ‘If you’re going to sit behind me again can you bring ear plugs?’”

Brilliant idea, Lynne
We could have a thread Lynne - a good idea. For important TV appearances we usually have a thread for each appearance though -then we can put the details in the heading so it is easy to spot and to search for. Maybe we still have new threads for each important TV appearance and another "general TV thread" for all the others.

Thanks for the response Cazza & yes you have a point there, it's not as if Andy is going to be a regular on TV (not yet anyway), so maybe it's best just to keep it "as is" and then if anyone spots Andy being on TV they can always post in this thread as the majority of people always read this thread (I think :))
I assume we don't still have the password-protected politics thread? That was on a previous incarnation, I think? Just wondered as was going to post how I despair.

Missing out the Rogers Cup seems the sensible way to go IMHO.
I'm hoping that might mean he has to play Paris to fulfil his Masters 1000's commitment ...
;)
I guess he'd be even more likely to play Paris if we reached the Dc final and it was a home tie so picked indoor hard as the surface. Can't think off the top of my head how many 1000s he's played this year. I am going to everyday of the wtf this year though (1 more than last year) so I wouldn't be able to go to Paris anyway, just have to watch it on to. And save my holidays for when we get to the Davis final, whether it is home or abroad :)

Yes it must be gutting for Federer - however I thought he'd hurt his knee in his semi match at Wimbledon - he tripped when playing Raonic.
He said he twisted it when he was bathing one of the girls.
Daily Mail (http://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-3715088/Game-set-sail-Tennis-champ-Andy-Murray-soaks-sun-Mallorca-wife-Kim-Sears-board-Rafael-Nadal-s-yacht.html#ixzz4FpV88AQ9) - Game, set, sail! Tennis champ Andy Murray soaks up the sun in Mallorca with wife Kim Sears on board Rafael Nadal's yacht.
Wearing top to toe Under Armour, Andy donned a grey marl T-shirt that draped his muscular physique, paired with simple black shorts that skimmed his knees.
Adding some much-needed colour to his relaxed attire, the Olympic gold medalist shielded his scalp from the burning Spanish sun with a cobalt blue cap.
The DM taking the mickey. :big grin:
Yes it must be gutting for Federer - however I thought he'd hurt his knee in his semi match at Wimbledon - he tripped when playing Raonic.
He said he twisted it when he was bathing one of the girls.
Both right I think. Hurt it initially during bath time with his daughter(s), then I think the fall in his Wimby SF aggravated it and made it worse...perhaps the initial injury was never fully healed? Who knows.
In an interview with a Swiss newspaper yesterday, Federer's coach Luthi said he was already struggling coming into Wimbledon and the only reason he played was because it was Wimbledon and the fall had nothing to do with him ending his season. Summarised in Tennis.com (http://www.tennis.com/pro-game/2016/07/luthi-federer-rehabbing-has-not-been-practice-court-wimbledon/59735/#.V5u_mrgrK00).
Yes Roger did make it quite clear in his pre Wimbledon interviews that he didn't really expect to get too far in the tournament, which was quite unusual coming from his lips! I think the fact that he made it as far as the SF surprised even him! So with hindsight, it's easy to see his injuries were still troubling him during Wimbledon.

Alistair's a legend, I've seen other articles about his "day trips" across the world to watch Andy. Surely that makes him an Aberdeen super duper fan. :big grin:

Tom Tebbutt's tennis Olympic report: (http://www.tenniscanada.com/tebbutt-in-the-games/?utm_content=buffer810de&utm_medium=social&utm_source=twitter.com&utm_campaign=buffer)
Since tennis became an Olympic sport again in 1988, there has always been a debate about whether it belonged in the Games and was worthy of comparison to established competitions such as the Grand Slam tournaments, Davis Cup and Fed Cup.
This year’s Olympic tennis has solidified its position in the Games as none had done in the past.
In the abstract, tennis at the Olympics may not equal the Grand Slams because of its abbreviated format and the absence of some of the best players. But once the athletes get on site in the presence of their peers in other sports, it automatically elevates the importance and intensity of the competition.
The way that everyone from gold medalists Andy Murray and Monica Puig to Juan Martin del Potro, Angelique Kerber, Rafael Nadal, Petra Kvitova, Daniel Nestor and Madison Keys competed with every ounce of their being was proof beyond a doubt of tennis’ rightful place in the Olympics.
With no money and no ranking points on offer, it was the sport in the purest form it’s seen on the tours – with little question that an Olympic medal is something to be prized as highly as a Grand Slam championship. Once in the Olympic environment, tennis players become like all Olympic athletes – striving for their best performances with the ultimate aim of a gold medal.
There are really only two drawbacks to tennis in the Olympics – the crowded summer schedule that the event has to be fitted into and the fact that tennis can get lost because of the wide variety of other sports going on at the same time.
Looking ahead to Tokyo 2020, there are a few things that might be improved. The tennis event – with 64 draws in singles, 32 draws in doubles and a 16 draw in mixed doubles – is simply too much tennis crammed into too few (9) days.
That has always been a problem but when one day at these Rio Games was virtually a complete washout because of rain, the problem became even more acute.
Soccer starts three days before the actual opening ceremonies at the Games, so why couldn’t tennis begin a day or two earlier? It could be a problem with regular tour events before and after the Olympics but it’s necessary for the integrity of the competition. It was obvious this year that Juan Martin del Potro (in the gold medal match) and Rafael Nadal (in the bronze medal match) were seriously (irreparably?) disadvantaged because of having played a monster three-hour plus match in the semifinals the previous day. It was no surprise that both, playing on fumes, were beaten.
A major topic on social media during the Olympics was the best-of-five sets men’s final following a lead-up where all the matches were best-of-three. It makes no sense in the jam-packed schedule as it exists at the moment to play best-of-five for the gold. But it would make sense if the Olympic tennis in the future could be adjusted to allow for a day off from singles for the men. A gold medal is a big deal and a best-of-five final is the truest test and fairest format for determining the player most worthy of the gold medal.
In 2020 the Olympics will be held in Tokyo from July 24 to August 9. That means the Games begin 12 days after the Wimbledon men’s final – unless Wimbledon moves back a week in the calendar or the tennis event is held the second week of the Olympics, not the first week as it was this year.
The summer stretch between Wimbledon and the US Open goes in three-year cycles of there being seven weeks and then six weeks between the two Grand Slams. Fortunately, as it was this year, it will be a seven-week gap between Wimbledon and the US Open in 2020. Still, it will not be easy to fit in a break after Wimbledon, a week leading up to the Olympics for travel to Japan, nine days or more of competition, travel time after the Olympics, the two ATP Masters 1000s and WTA Premier 5 events in Canada and Cincinnati and a basically off-week before Flushing Meadows begins.
The limited weeks in the summer will make it a head-scratcher for tennis officials trying to work out a schedule accommodating the best interests of the players and the tournaments.
But the Rio Games have certainly shown that tennis and the players, who played their hearts out, belong in the Olympics.
They have also proved that tennis will survive the eventual passing from the scene of current greats Serena Williams and Roger Federer. Williams was eliminated in the third round of singles and the first round of doubles and Federer was not there at all. But tennis at the 2016 Olympics still thrived and turned out to be just about as thrilling as it’s possible to imagine.

A. MURRAY/J. Monaco
6-3, 6-2
Q. After the trip across, how do you feel starting over here?
ANDY MURRAY: Yeah, it was tough. I mean, obviously really humid here. Slightly different -- well, quite different conditions to Rio with the balls, and the court here is pretty fast. Rio was a lot slower than this.
Took a bit of time to get into it, but did all right.
Q. Did you leave at about 3:00 a.m. out of Rio?
ANDY MURRAY: Yeah, 3:00 a.m. Yeah.
Q. Got here when?
ANDY MURRAY: We got here about -- into Cincinnati about 5:00 p.m. on Monday.
Q. How much time have you had on the courts?
ANDY MURRAY: Well, I did two short sessions yesterday and two short sessions today. I sometimes find that rather than doing one long session, if you're going into new conditions, it's a bit easier to do a couple of shorter sessions.
I feel like I get my timing a bit better like that, so I hit like an hour total today before the match, and then yesterday about an hour, 45.
Q. Kevin Anderson I believe next. Thoughts there.
ANDY MURRAY: Yeah, tough match. He obviously serves big. I think he quite likes these conditions. Obviously coming back from some injury problems this year but is starting to play better.
Yeah, will be a tough one.
Q. Do you have to have a certain amount of sleep every night?
ANDY MURRAY: I think it helps, yeah, for athletes. It's just more for recovery I think more than anything. It's not like if I sleep badly I can't play, but physically you feel better if you get eight, nine hours sleep rather than four or five.
On Monday we when arrived here I didn't sleep much on the plane, so struggled a bit on Monday; had a decent night's sleep Monday night; felt better Tuesday; and then good night sleep again. I slept during the day today as well, so I was feeling a little better.
Q. You had a little tightness in the shoulder there and had to call for the trainer.
ANDY MURRAY: Yeah, I think it's different balls here, so that's something that's not easy for tennis players. You have to be careful with that, because it totally changes how it feels on the racquet. Obviously that would change how it feels through your body as well.
Obviously on the serve, the shoulder feels it quite a lot. Some guys get problems with their wrist with ball changes. For me sometimes it's my shoulder.
Hopefully that gets better as the week goes on.
Q. You did a pretty good job then.
ANDY MURRAY: Yeah, after the start. I served better in the second set. Just the start was a bit sore. I played obviously a lot of tennis, but also, yeah, the ball change. I mean, in most other sports you play kind of with the same stuff every single week.
For us it changes all the time. We play Wilson US Open -- Aussie Open balls in Rio; here is Penn; next week is Wilson US Open. It's not ideal.
Q. You're a guy who relies a lot on interacting with your team while you're on the court. A, were you always that way? B, if that was taken away and you couldn't look at them, do you think it would affect your tennis?
ANDY MURRAY: I don't think it would make much difference. I mean, I've played matches when they haven't sat in the box. When I was younger as well I didn't always have my team with me either. I don't think it makes a big difference.
I think a lot of people read a lot into it, more than necessary. I don't think it makes a huge difference.

Andy Murray
Cincinnati, Ohio
A. MURRAY/K. Anderson
6-3, 6-2
THE MODERATOR: Questions, please.
Q. How is the shoulder? Looked like it was a bit sore to begin with. Got better during the match.
ANDY MURRAY: Yeah, I mean, that's kind of how it's been. I had similar sort of thing during the clay court season. It was kind of the same, where beginning of the matches just a bit sore and stiff.
Gradually warms up as the match goes on.
Q. Have you picked up a cold now?
ANDY MURRAY: Yeah. Yeah. I actually think I picked it up in Rio but only started kind of feeling it on the flight when I was coming over after my match.
Actually think like I probably sound worse today, but I think it's starting to come out now. I sound worse but I feel better.
Q. With the shoulder and the cold, what keeps you motivated this week? You're the highest ranked guy left in manage this tournament now. Do you feel this is an opportunity for you?
ANDY MURRAY: Well, yeah, I mean, I think as well obviously since Wimbledon if I didn't play here, wouldn't have played any ranking tournaments through to the US Open.
If I want to keep trying to push up the rankings and go higher, I need to try to do well throughout the whole year and not just take sort of six weeks. Like Indian Wells/Miami period earlier this year. That hurt me a little bit.
Yeah, I just want to come here and just give it my best shot. I'm not putting too much pressure on myself this week because of the way the preparation was and everything and the way I've been feeling the last few days.
Just trying to go out there and compete. Obviously have a lot of confidence just now, so when the big, important moments come I'm playing some good tennis.
Q. People talk about the benefits of having a strong tennis IQ. A lot of people describe you that way. Some coaches would also say you don't really want to be thinking out there the on the court. Where do you think you fall out there on the court? Are you thinking a lot or try not to think at all? What's the balance?
ANDY MURRAY: It depends what you are thinking, to be honest. I think if you're thinking about how to win the match and the game plan, I think that's positive.
I think if you're thinking about technical things and stuff like that, I think that's not a good thing.
You know, you want to be thinking about where you're hitting the ball and placing the ball, and if you trust your shots you're able to commit to that. If you're thinking about technical stuff as you're trying to hit the ball you're going to make mistakes.
I think it really depends what you're thinking.
Q. Penn balls here. Big difference with the ball changing again. How much of an adjustment is that to you?
ANDY MURRAY: Well, I think it's not great for the body, you know, for wrist, elbow, and shoulder. Obviously in Rio playing with different balls there, Wilson Aussie Open ball there. Here we're playing with Penn and then US Open ball.
It's something players have spoken about for quite a while, having a bit more consistency with the balls.
You know, like the hard court season it's a similar ball, and clay court season the same ball throughout. I think people want to see the best tennis each week, and if you're changing balls all the time, the matches at the beginning of the week won't be as good because players are having to make quite significant adjustments.
If you asked a golfer to play with a different ball every week they'd be hitting the ball too far and too short depending. It's not easy.
Q. Just wondering how much, if at all, you've used any data analytic stuff in practice. In Indian Wells they have sort of Hawk-Eye technology. Have you used any of that, and do you think it would be useful for a player of your level?
ANDY MURRAY: Yeah, I think it can be. I haven't used it. I haven't used that much. I use heart rate monitors and a thing called a Catapult which measures speeds and distance that you're running.
Obviously you can see in a best-of-five-set match how much you run against the top players. So therefore, you know, if you have a Catapult on you can measure that whilst you're training a bit and gauge if you're doing enough or similar to what you might do in a best-of-five-set match if you're doing a tough training session.
I've used that, but haven't used one of those courts that has the cameras everywhere. I think they're good. I think especially for coaches and for younger players as well I think it's a very good tool.
Q. What sort of the data would you be interested in? RPMs? Things like?
ANDY MURRAY: That's the thing, isn't it? If I say I want to improve the speed on my first serve, you know, it's great to have the ability to do that. My whole career I've only done it one time because it's really tough to get good speed guns to do that in practice, to measure how hard you're serving if that's something you're trying to improve or look at.
So that would be something. If it's your net clearance, how high you're hitting the ball over the net, things like that, yeah, I mean, you can do all sorts. It's whatever you're trying to work on. It's a good way of seeing if you're doing the things that you're coach is asking you to do and if your practices are actually paying off.
If you're trying to improve the height over the net and you're working on stuff all the time and you go and test it and it's not making a difference, you can change what you're doing to make it better.
Q. Off-court question. Have you got the gold medal with you? Where are your Wimbledon trophies? Will this gold medal be alongside the other one on show at the house?
ANDY MURRAY: The gold medal is here with me. I've got in the hotel. Then my wife kind of decides what happens with the trophies. The medals I think are in the safe at home, and then the Wimbledon trophies, the last time I was home they were out. They sort of get moved and put in different places and stuff.
But, yeah. Nothing else to say. They're kind of everywhere.
Q. I suppose they don't need much polishing.
ANDY MURRAY: They do actually.
Q. Does Kim do that or do you do that?
ANDY MURRAY: We haven't actually done it. Neither of us have done it, because of one from 2013 is a bit -- a little bit rusty. I was actually saying this before we left. When the two of them were next to each other, yeah, they could do with a bit of a clean.
Q. Just curious, I think it was the very last time you played Kevin was at the US Open, which was quite the match. Completely clean slate coming into tonight. How do you approach it when you're coming off a loss against a certain player?
ANDY MURRAY: Yeah, it was obviously one year ago pretty much, and a lot happened in the last year. Kevin has had some tough injuries to deal with this year and is starting to sort of gradually get back to the level he was playing at last year. It takes time.
For me, I'm coming off the back of the best few months of my career, so it's kind of different, slightly different circumstance. And also in a slam there is a little bit more riding on it as well. It was a very tough loss for me at the time and I learnt a lot from it as well.

I am a Daily Mail reader and just a little weary of these comments. We also read The Telegraph so what that makes me I don't know. What are the readers of the Daily Express, The Mirror, the Daily Star, the one I won't name and the Guardian and Times like? They must all be normal, objective, fair-minded, non-controversial and thoroughly nice people. Give it rest....it's becoming tedious.
Not sure if this would be the correct place to put this, so mods please feel free to remove/delete etc if not in right place

A. MURRAY/B. Tomic
6-4, 6-4
Q. You've got Bernie's number. What is it about playing against him? You record is 12 out of 12 sets.
ANDY MURRAY: Yeah, I mean, look, I don't know. I've played obviously some good matches against him, but tonight maybe wasn't the best tennis we both played.
When the important moments came I felt like I served well when I was behind, and then as soon as I had my chance on my serve I capitalized on them.
That was the difference. I just played the bigger points better tonight.
Q. Were you struggling out there physically with the back?
ANDY MURRAY: At the beginning of the match a little bit, yeah. Just stiff a bit.
But I knew coming into the event that was going to be the case. I spoke in the interview before I knew coming here I wasn't going to feel perfect.
Just try to accept that, work through it, and then I know I have a few days' break at the end of the tournament to rest up and get ready for New York.
Q. So it's not an issue of major concern for you?
ANDY MURRAY: No, I think it's just fatigue really. I have played a lot of the matches in a short space of time, and also been a change of surface as well coming to the hard.
You know, does put a little bit more sort of stress on the joints and stuff, the hard courts.
Yeah, just accepting it for what it is. I'll be fine. I just need to work through it and accept it.
Q. Milos in the semis now. You've seen a lot of him this year. What are your thoughts? Again, you've got a pretty commanding record over him.
ANDY MURRAY: Yeah, tough match obviously. We played some important matches this year in Australia in the semis and then the Wimbledon final; Queen's final as well.
Yeah, again, it's been tight, but just managed to play a little bit better in the important moments, which is - especially playing against a big server - very important. You don't get loads of chances. Hopefully I will do that again tomorrow.
Bunged up and breathing heavily although that could be due to a sensitive microphone. ;)

"After the first match I played, I was having problems with my shoulder.
"I did speak about it with my team, but my physio was pretty confident that it was just fatigue, and that I didn't have any sort of structural damage in my shoulder.
"When it was said that I wasn't going to make it worse by playing, I thought: 'Let's go for it this week. Let's try and get through as many matches as we can."

M. CILIC/A. Murray
6-4, 7-5
THE MODERATOR: Questions, please.
Q. Obviously not to be today. What can you take out of this week especially given how much tennis you've played?
ANDY MURRAY: Yeah, I mean, I've very proud of this week. Obviously today, yeah, didn't go how I would've wanted.
But, yeah, I mean, I certainly didn't expect to get to the final when I arrived here. Yeah, had some, you know, pretty good wins along the way. Today, you know, was tough, tricky conditions with the wind first match during the day.
I think if I got off to a better start maybe could have done a bit better. I had a break point in his first service game and Love-30 in his next service game. Maybe if I had gotten the lead there maybe would've felt better.
Was pretty much behind from that point on and made it tough. But, you know, very, very positive week. Yeah, looking forward to a few days' rest now.
Q. Some people say this may be the peak of your career in terms of how you're playing. Do you feel that way?
ANDY MURRAY: Yeah, I think so. I think I played my best tennis just now. Definitely really this year I had tough losses around Indian Wells/Miami time, and then obviously switched -- well, just stopped working with Amélie too around that period.
You know, really after Miami, I mean, the last four, five months have been -- it's not even close to anything else I had done before. It was way, way better. Seven finals in a row, you know. Won obviously Wimbledon again, the Olympics.
Yeah, I still feel like there are some things I can improve upon. Yeah, it's been really good.
Q. You just said when you came here you didn't expect to reach the final. So at any point during this tournament did you consider about pulling out from the tournament?
ANDY MURRAY: After the first match I played and was having the problems with my shoulder I did speak about it with my team, but my physio was pretty confident that it was just an overuse sort of fatigue problem, and that I didn't have any sort of the structural damage or an tear or anything in my shoulder.
We discussed that, but then when it was sort of said I wasn't going to make it worse by playing. Maybe just sore for a few days, but then I get a few days' rest when I'm done, then it was like, Right, well let's go for it week. Let's try and get through as many matches as we can, try and do as best as we can, and I did that.
Like I said, really didn't expect to be here. Obviously disappointing when you get to the final not to win, but, you know, it was a very, very positive week considering everything.
Q. What was the discussion with Fergus? Was it to do with buffering of the wind with the microphone? More importantly, how excited are you now looking ahead to the US Open?
ANDY MURRAY: Yeah, I'm pumped for the US Open now. First I get to see my family tomorrow which I'm looking forward to. I haven't seen them for three weeks, which has been hard. That's the longest I've not seen them for since baby was born.
So I'm looking forward to seeing them tomorrow. Get a couple days off, so I'll spend time with them which will be nice.
Then, yeah, really looking forward to New York. Feeling very positive just now about my game and my body. Mentally I feel in a good place just now. So I'm looking forward to New York for sure.
Then, yeah, on the court I was just asking because I was waiting to serve and there was a decent amount of noise and I just asked if it was the microphone that was making noise, which he said it was. I just asked if he could turn it off, which he said he couldn't. That was it.
Q. This was the first time somebody born after Novak, who's a week younger than you, has ever won a Masters title. What makes it so hard for guys to break through in Masters Series?
ANDY MURRAY: Yeah, I don't know actually. Not sure. I mean, obviously a lot of the top guys have been in the latter stages of the Masters Series, and often to win them you have to win against a couple of them, which is not easy.
Even this week when Novak wasn't here; Roger is injured; Rafa was obviously struggling; I wasn't feeling great this week either, but still closish to doing it.
I don't know why that's been the case in the Masters Series. I would've thought that more likely that it would happen at Masters than at a slam.
But, yeah, just goes to show the consistency of the top players over the last ten years or so has been phenomenal.
Q. (Question regarding Nicola Adams.)
ANDY MURRAY: Yeah, I didn't get to see it unfortunately. I mean, I read about it. Seemed like the final was pretty close. She deserved to win from what I read.
Then actually I saw the men's super heavyweight final today actually before I went on the court, which was close and could have gone either way.
But, yeah, it was great that she defended the title. I met her a couple times, and I also chatted to her a little bit in Rio as well. She's unbelievably nice and good fun, smiley, really chatty, and very humble.
Then when she's in the ring, I wouldn't like to be in there with her, that's for sure. But very different away from it. Very nice. So I'm very happy that she won.
I was surprised to read that comment about Amelie. It seems to be rather critical but maybe I've misinterpreted it - until now Andy has always been very complimentary about Amelie and his time with her.
Nice that he'll get some one with his little one now

I thought he was just being general in that it was part of a difficult time- though perhaps he is kind of alluding to a difficult time in his coaching set up contributing to a difficult time on court? Was more taken by how excited he is to be seeing his family again. I just love that side of him.

On re-reading, I think you're probably right, Westie. Andy was probably just making a general comment and not intending to be critical of Amelie.

The no 1 in the race by the end of the year is also number one in the rankings. But being ahead in the race at some point in the year does not make you number one unless the rankings also do.

 it's all beyond me!
 it's all beyond me!
So .... The race is just the points for the current year whereas the ranking is previous year as well. So depending on the time of year, race and ranking can be miles apart or the same ...
So, the first tournament of the year, whoever wins that is no 1 in the race .... as the year goes on more and more tournaments have taken place in the current year so the points then count to the race. By the time you get to WTF, all points are from the current year and therefore count towards the race, so race and ranking points are the same.

Lendl's estate highlights the differential between the very few at the top and the majority of professional tennis players who are probably earning less than the minimum wage. We feel sympathy for Andy losing in the final of Cincinnati but at the same time he did pocket more than $400,000.
Interesting that Lendl took it off the market around the time he stopped coaching Andy. And now it has gone back on the market around the same time he is coaching Andy again.

Great article by Cash in The Times today - says that Novak is very match unfit and Andy is playing the best tennis of his life.
He thinks Andy will win the US Open and doubts whether Novak will even make the final.
Flatman talks about some issues between Novak and Jelena - which have been resolved. Although some changes in back up support team which may also have been unsettling.

Not sure where to put this, but a detailed article on the new roof on Ashe, how quickly it closes (30 seconds shutters 7 minutes roof). To cut a long story short, they are going to be proactive and close with risk of rain, do the process in 7 minutes, so players will be kept on court. Also interesting is how local the weather conditions are e.g. the chance of rain in New York is not the same necessarily as in Flushing Meadow. http://www.usopen.org/en_US/news/articles/2016-08-26/rules_of_the_roof_when_to_close_and_why.html?chip= 5

It seems it's not only us who are confused as to whether the McEnroe/Raonic partnership has ended temporarily or permanently.
Guardian (https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2016/aug/28/john-mcenroe-leaves-coach-milos-raonic-us-open) - John McEnroe and Milos Raonic end coaching partnership before US Open
McEnroe was unsure whether the partnership might resume after the US Open, where Raonic plays Germany’s Dustin Brown in the first round on Monday.
“If Milos wanted to come for a week in October, November and work, that would be to me, like, an incredible thing,” McEnroe said.
“So I’m open to the possibility of it. But I think at this particular time it makes life easier not to continue it. I’m not sure, would be the honest answer.”
Maybe that's the reason for McEnroe's mood when he gave this interview.
BT Sport (http://sport.bt.com/more-sport-hub/more-sport/john-mcenroe-still-to-see-andy-murray-show-the-levels-of-novak-djokovic-S11364082729554) - John McEnroe still to see Andy Murray show the levels of Novak Djokovic
"He wants to get closer to be talked about in the same breath as these three guys that are like three of the five greatest players that ever lived.
"So Murray has been meticulous. He's done a great job. But he's still got a ways to go to even get close to those guys."
Nobody has suggested otherwise. Raonic had a lucky escape.
It's a two pronged McEnroe attack. Brother Patrick also having a go at Andy telling him he should know his place. :hmm:

"Murray’s got an opportunity, but he’s never going to get to the level of those others"

Andy Murray
Press Conference
A. MURRAY/L. Rosol
6-3, 6-2, 6-2
THE MODERATOR: Questions, please.
Q. You made it look very comfortable. Seemed pretty easy out there for you.
ANDY MURRAY: Yeah, in the start of the match he had a few chances the first couple of service games. Yeah, he came out going for his shots. Once I got through that, you know, sort of tricky period right at the start where he's hitting the ball really well, you know, kind of adjusting to the conditions. The arena, it's quite different playing out there now. It's a lot louder than most places that we play, so you don't hear the ball as much. There's a slightly different sound in there. Once I got through that, I settled down and played, you know, I think a really good match.
Q. Do you think the noise and the atmosphere in there was different to previous years? It seemed there was just a constant hum or noise in the crowd throughout the match.
ANDY MURRAY: Yeah, I think last year was similar. You know, I'm assuming it's to do with the roof. I mean, normally there's always been noise out there. I think the roof has changed that a little bit.
Q. Can you feed off that, the energy you get from the crowd? I know you like playing here.
ANDY MURRAY: Yeah, I mean, I think you get used to it as the match goes on. But it is very different. You know, imagine when you go to play on one of the outside courts, it will be quite a significant change.
Q. Any difference with the trajectory of the ball through the air or anything like that?
ANDY MURRAY: I think in the evenings -- it was extremely humid tonight. This is nothing, in my opinion, to do with the roof. It's always been like that in the evenings, a little bit easier to control the ball.
The court is obviously cooler, so it's staying a little bit lower. It's not bouncing up as high. During the day that's obviously quite different. The ball's bouncing up a lot more, tends to be a little bit harder to control.
Obviously now in there, this is because of the roof, there's literally no wind at all. It almost has a feel of playing indoors because there's no wind. It's, like, perfect conditions to play really.
Q. Five Brits into round two. Did you watch any of the other matches? What did you make of them?
ANDY MURRAY: I saw the first couple of sets of Kyle's match. That's been it. I didn't get to see any of the matches today. Yeah, I mean, Kyle played extremely well. I mean, I practiced with him the day beforehand.
He was hitting the ball good in practice. He's improving all of the time. To win a match like that in a slam that comfortably against a top player, a guy that's been at the top for a long time, you know, is a very good sign.
Yeah, it was good for him. Then obviously all the other Brits, obviously Naomi and Laura had a tight match. Dan got through, you know, a tricky one against Ram. Konta has been solid for a long time. Heather has never played so well here.
It's been, I guess, a pretty good start for the Brits.
Q. You're third on the list of points won on second serve. Must be pretty happy with that part of your game?
ANDY MURRAY: I served very well tonight. I used good variation on the second serve, as well. But, yeah, first and second serve were very good tonight. That's something that I worked on a lot. It was good through the grass at Wimbledon. It was important for me.
You know, especially in the final there and the semis, I was really not giving up too many chances. Last week, as well, was the same thing. And in Cincinnati, too. When I serve well, the rest of my game tends to follow.
Q. There didn't appear to be a semblance of weariness out there. A good week of rest?
ANDY MURRAY: Yeah, I mean, it's tough to get the balance totally right the last week because, you know, I wanted to get used to the conditions but also didn't want to spend so much time on the court that I came in feeling tired, because it could have been quite easy to do that.
Haven't been in that position too many times coming into New York. Obviously maybe last year was a little bit similar. You know, kind of tried to learn a little bit from that, as well.
But I felt good out there. You know, didn't waste too much energy, which is important, because it's obviously a late finish. It will be a late one by the time I get back and in bed, even though the match, if it had gone four sets, an extra 45 minutes, an hour, becomes pretty late. I'm glad I got it done quickly and I feel all right.
Q. You said on court Ivan has changed having you playing with younger players. Can you explain that.
ANDY MURRAY: It's best to ask him that. I said, you know, not a whole lot's changed. But I think having the experience of coaching other players changes things a little bit. You probably learn more from working with different players of different ages.
When we worked together the first time, it's the first time Ivan had ever coached, as well. Now, having worked with younger players, I think you learn different skills and understand certain things a bit better.
I think with young players especially, you know, you can't just tell them, You served terrible today. They can take that to heart, and maybe the next day they serve terrible as well because their coach has told them that.
Whereas with I think maybe older players or professionals, it's maybe a little bit easier to be a little bit more direct.
I just think he's probably learnt some things working with juniors. He's a smart guy, obviously a good coach.
Q. Not gone soft, has he?
ANDY MURRAY: No, not on me anyway (smiling).
Q. (Question regarding Novak.)
ANDY MURRAY: I saw the beginning of the match. Looked like he served particularly well at the beginning of the match. Seemed to be hitting the ball well from the back of the court. Just his serve wasn't so good.
You know, that's normal. Normally he would have played a little bit more, you know, coming into this. He's normally done well in Cincinnati, though he's not won there, he's normally got to latter stages. Obviously with the early exit at the Olympics, he's not played loads of matches for the last three weeks or so.
But he seemed fine. He was moving good, hitting the ball good from the back of the court. Just didn't serve so well. I'm sure that will get better as the tournament goes on.

A. MURRAY/M. Granollers
6-4, 6-1, 6-4
THE MODERATOR: Questions, please.
Q. How difficult was it to play both before and after the rain started?
ANDY MURRAY: I mean, I don't think it was too different to the other night when I played, but when the rain came it was certainly loud.
I mean, you can't here anything, really. I mean, you could hear the line calls, but not so much when the opponents -- you know, when he was hitting the ball or even when you're hitting the ball, really, which is tough purely because we're not used to it. That's what makes it challenging.
Q. Could you explain a little more how it might affect you, maybe make things more difficult if it does, if you can't hear the ball coming off?
ANDY MURRAY: Because we use our ears when we play. It's not just the eyes. You know, it helps us pick up the speed of the ball, the spin that's on the ball, how hard someone's hitting it.
You know, if we played with our ears covered or with headphones on, it would be a big advantage if your opponent wasn't wearing them.
You know, it's tricky. You know, you can still do it, but it's harder, for sure.
Q. Have you ever played under a roof or like an indoor court where the rain has been battering down like that?
ANDY MURRAY: Yeah, yeah, I have played when it's been loud, for sure. Sometimes on the -- you know, a lot of the stadiums that have, you know, temporary roofs, they can be pretty loud when it rains.
But, I mean, it apparently was raining unbelievably hard outside. It seemed that way anyway.
Q. Can you compare it to playing under the roof at Wimbledon?
ANDY MURRAY: In what respect?
Q. What you just talked about, playing under this roof and playing under the Wimbledon roof.
ANDY MURRAY: Well, it's definitely louder. You know, I don't think it changed the conditions on the court as much as it does at Wimbledon.
You know, I think we are also probably more used to playing on it -- we are used to playing on indoor hard court than indoor grass, obviously.
But, yeah, I don't know. You maybe don't notice it as much here I think as much as Wimbledon. When the roof is on the humidity picks up significantly; whereas here it's always humid really, you know, when the roof is open.
When I played the other night I was dripping. I mean, it was so, so humid. Doesn't change too much. It's a lot cooler in there than it is, you know, during the day; whereas at Wimbledon sometimes it gets warmer when the roof goes on.
Yeah it's definitely quieter at Wimbledon, though.
Q. Could you summarize what it is that you believe that makes Ivan an effective coach? Secondly, emotional player interacting with his boss, is there ever a time you got a rise out of him during the match?
ANDY MURRAY: No, not really.
Why I think he's a good coach? I mean, it's hard to give like one thing. There is a lot of things that go into being a good coach and a successful coach. There is not one thing that you can pick up.
I mean, obviously, you know, tactics or something that's important, the way you set up the practices and the training, the level that you expect, you know, and effort in training sessions I think is important.
I think he's professional, very disciplined. Probably things that made him very successful as a player, so they are a few of the reasons. But many things go into making him a good coach. There is not just one or two.
Q. Do you think the noise at the tournament is something you have to look at, or will you just have to deal with it?
ANDY MURRAY: Well, the players will deal with it. You get used to stuff. As an athlete, that's what you do. We adjust to conditions, different conditions every week. Playing in the day to playing in the night is totally different from one day to the next.
We change balls. I played the Olympics with one ball; Cincinnati with a different one; a different ball again here.
We change stuff all of the time, but it takes time to adjust and then get used to that. I think that's why everyone is talking about it now, because it's something new. Yeah, it's just going to take time to adjust.
I'm sure if the feedback is that, you know, the TV or the spectators aren't enjoying the match as much then they will look into it and try and change it. But if it's fine on TV, which from what I have heard it is fine on TV -- I don't know what the fans have said about it yet, but the players will adjust.
Q. I don't know if you saw last night after Bondarenko won, but a fan jumped out of the stands and got a picture with her on the court. I was wondering how much do you worry about security here?
ANDY MURRAY: I didn't see that. I was made aware of it before I came in here, but I didn't see it. And, yeah, it's not something I think about when I'm on the court or when I'm playing.
Actually sometimes more when I am out in the streets and stuff I think more about that. Not just because of the things that have happened in the world, like in the big cities over the last 15, 20 years. I sometimes think about those kind of things, that safety.
When I'm at a tennis tournament, I don't know, I just feel comfortable when I'm on the court. I have never had any issues, any problems like that.
Really, a kid jumped on the court after actually one of our matches at the Olympics and ran onto the court and asked for his pen back because I had signed his hat and then gone away with his pen. He jumped onto the court and asked for the pen back.
But that's really the only thing I have had. Obviously yesterday was -- I mean, it seemed like everything turned out okay. Yeah, never had any issues.
Q. You didn't face Rafa in Rio, but from what you saw, what's your assessment of his performance? Seems to come back strong from layoffs.
ANDY MURRAY: Yeah, I mean, obviously he played very well there. I think the last match he played I think he was extremely tired, but I watched quite a lot of the end of his match with Del Potro. You know, it was a very, very good match.
I didn't see any of his other matches there, but he obviously played good tennis there after a long layoff. I practiced with him a little bit in Mallorca before going there and he was practicing well and playing good in practice.
And, yeah, you know, like with any great player, once you build up momentum and get matches and gain confidence, there is no reason why they can't win the major events again.
Sometimes take a little bit of time after an injury layoff to build that back up. For some it's a little bit quicker. Just have to wait and see.
Q. Just the general takeaway after the match today? The form? The fitness? Where you are at this stage in the tournament?
ANDY MURRAY: Yeah, I felt I did pretty well. It was a 20-, 25-minute period in the match where it was tough and, you know, tricky. Got myself in a situation that maybe, you know, I could have avoided if I had taken one or two of the set points that I had at 5-2 or 5-3.
But, you know, I thought I did pretty well. I thought there were some good points in there. Yeah, that period of the match was very tough. I didn't play that well during that period and managed to come through it thankfully and play some good stuff in the second and third sets.
You know, I served at like 40, 42% first serves or something and still won in straight sets. I must have been doing other things well than serving. I was obviously hitting the ball pretty well and returning pretty good. Could serve better, for sure. Only got broken once in a game where I had game points. It was all right.
Q. I think it's fair to say that few other players really in history have made more of a striking or stunning run than you have had in the past months both on court and off court: Davis Cup, becoming a father, the finals, Melbourne and Paris, obviously Wimbledon and the Olympics. Even just going to support your country in Serbia. Do you sense you have blossomed a bit, coming into a new period? Could you explain your great success? Do you think love and fathering have anything to do with it?
ANDY MURRAY: I mean, it's hard to know exactly what to out it down to. Yeah, it's tough to know. I think there is many things that have gone into obviously becoming a parent. Well, for me anyway it's changed my perspective a bit on things. I feel a little bit calmer than maybe I did in my past about my tennis and how important tennis is in my life.
It's still extremely important, but it's not the most important thing. I think having Ivan back on my team has been great and has helped me a lot.
You know, I have capitalized on, you know, a few opportunities. You know, when some of the other top guys maybe hadn't played or struggled or lost, you know, I have taken those chances, you know, when they have come my way which is good.
But, yeah, it's really hard to say like one thing, you know, definitively. Like this is what's made the difference. There has been a number of changes this year, and I think all of them come together at the same time has, you know, has made for a successful few months.
Q. The women's tour has negotiated a heat rule which has been implemented this week. On the players council, is that something you would consider raising there? Do you think it's valid for the men's tour, as well?
ANDY MURRAY: Yeah, I do think so. I mean, there is a heat rule for the men, I believe, but I don't think anyone would be able to tell you exactly what it is. You know, in Australia -- I don't know exactly what it is. There is a lot of different things that go into it.
Yeah, I do think there should be a heat rule, because sometimes it is -- especially on the hard courts it can be, you know, pretty brutal. You know, you don't want to take any chances with, you know, a player's health.
But it's not something I have spoken about on the council yet. Whether it's something that comes up I don't know. I mean, I do think we have heat rules in place, but they are different to the women. I don't really understand how they come up with them or who decides on what the heat rule is.
Q. (Question regarding stress on the body.)
ANDY MURRAY: Yeah, I think -- I mean, if you ask most players that have had cramps -- rarely do athletes cramp in practice or in training. That tends to come in match situations. No one really understands exactly the reasons for why cramps start.
Obviously it can be from dehydration, but most of the players would, you know, be professional enough to make sure that isn't what the problem is. Sometimes it can be through lack of conditioning, but, you know, mostly guys are in very good shape.
You know, there is the psychological aspect of it. The stress, you know, that you might put yourself under and the nerves that you feel can cause that.
I think most players have gone through it, and for some reason it seems to happen more at this event, I think, than at the others. That's just my take on it like from being around. I don't know if that is because of the humidity or maybe players are coming in here more fatigued at the end of a long season, a long stretch. I don't know.
Q. It could be Simon in the next round. Talk about him. Obviously an exhausting player to play at this stage of the year. Is that a danger for you, as well?
ANDY MURRAY: Well, yeah. I mean, he's very good. He obviously pushed Novak extremely close earlier in the year at the Aussie Open. And, yeah, I mean, I have had good success against him in the past, but a lot of the matches have been tough, tough matches.
Davis Cup last year and the quarters, I think it was, you know, I was quite a long way behind in that match and managed to turn it around.
Yeah, I have had a lot of close matches with him in the past. He's a tough guy to play because, you know, he makes a lot of balls. He moves unbelievably well. You know, he's a smart player on the court. He's tough when he's on his game.
Q. How different is it this year, being in New York with the US Open and the baby along?
ANDY MURRAY: It doesn't change too much, to be honest. Not much. Not much changes. Maybe get up earlier than I did in the past. But, yeah, doesn't change. Doesn't change loads.

Gruelling hours on the practice court with coach Ryan Jones have been complimented by having Andy Murray as a kind of mentor.
“Just being around him, hitting with him throughout the year, not only do you get useful information from speaking with him but it’s also a great tool just to watch him. You learn a lot watching him go about his business off the court, how and when he trains, and obviously on court,” added Edmund. “
You can pick out little snippets to benefit you, he’s been a huge impact in that aspect and I’ve been fortunate enough to get advice from a player like Andy, the No.2 in the world, has three majors, two Olympic gold medals.”
........
Observing Murray has given Edmund the grit and desire to explore every possibility to maximise his potential.
“When I went from the juniors to the futures and challengers you immediately noticed the physicality. That is something I’ve had to buy into a lot, you definitely need to work hard at it as you can’t really say that any of the top guys aren’t in good shape,” revealed Edmund.
“The mental side of the game is crucial as well. It’s very individual but I know a lot of people who invest a lot of time in that and so do I. The preparation is vital, you have to cover every base and can’t have any weak links because you’ll get found out.”

A. MURRAY/G. Dimitrov
6-1, 6-2, 6-2
THE MODERATOR: Questions, please.
Q. Where does that rank performance-wise?
ANDY MURRAY: I mean, I played very well. Tactically I played a very good match. I don't think I made any mistakes there. I kept good concentration throughout.
Yeah, I mean, it was a really good match. I think Grigor played his best, but I didn't really give him a chance to get into the match.
Q. Is it just the way things eke out? It was so different to the way you played against Lorenzi.
ANDY MURRAY: Yeah, that's the beauty of an individual sport. Just because you play badly a couple of days ago doesn't mean I'm going to play badly tonight. My best tennis is in there. Not every day do you play your best. When you're not playing, as I said the other day, when you don't play your best and win, it's a really positive thing. A lot of people worry about that or panic, like, This is terrible. You played one bad match.
I won. I'm still in the tournament. I was able to play great tennis today.
Q. It seemed like Grigor was a bit overwhelmed by playing a night match on Ashe. Were you able to sense that and take advantage of that?
ANDY MURRAY: Yeah, I think that helped. I mean, I don't think he started the match, like, really badly. He had a couple of breakpoints in the first game. I don't think he started, like, really badly.
But once I got up in the score, wasn't giving him any free points, I could sense it was getting tough for him. I just wanted to keep my foot on the gas, which I didn't really do the other day. That was the one thing that I wasn't happy with against Lorenzi. When I did win a first set that was tight, didn't play my best, I kind of let him back into the match after I got a break early in the second.
I wanted too make sure today if I got ahead, I stayed on top of him, I didn't have any dip in concentration or my level, and I stuck to my tactics that were working well. That was it.
It's easier for him to him to answer how he felt about the situation or the occasion. I just know from my side, I didn't give him an opportunity once I was ahead to let him back in the match.
Q. Did you do anything different to prepare, considering he's had success against you in the past?
ANDY MURRAY: I don't know. Well, clearly not because normally if you've lost against someone the last time, that would suggest you might be more nervous going in against him or whatever. I didn't feel like that tonight. I was well-prepared.
I try to, in slams, it's maybe a little bit easier to prepare for matches than it is at other events because often you're playing back-to-back days and you don't have as much time to do a practice session beforehand to work on some of the things you might need to use against them.
Yesterday, had a good practice. Went over the game plan. Was pretty clear with what I wanted to do.
The last match we played I don't think had any bearing on tonight.
Q. You're going to play Nishikori. You have a very good record against him. Do you think you're comfortable to play against him in terms of playing style or experience?
ANDY MURRAY: I mean, I think Kei is pretty experienced now. I don't think that will be the difference in the match.
I have played well against him in the past. But, you know, he likes these conditions. He plays well in New York. He's made his only slam final here. He beat Novak here. He's obviously I think playing pretty well this summer. He played some good stuff at the Olympics and won the bronze.
I played a really good match against him when we played a few weeks ago. I'm aware I'll need to do that again in a couple days if I want to beat him because he's one of the best players in the world, plays extremely well on hard court.
It's going to be very, very tough.
Q. (Question about serving fastest serve in tournament.)
ANDY MURRAY: I haven't really. You know, I mean, I didn't hit like a bunch of serves that were like 139, 140, 141. I think that was just a one-off serve. Sometimes the gun can be a bit wrong possibly.
I served a bunch in the low 130s, mid-130s, which was good. I got a lot of free points with my serve tonight, which I did the first match against Rosol but maybe not so much against Granollers and Lorenzi.
You know, the conditions do a lot for you to serve quick. You know, the balls are fast. I wanted to use that to my advantage as the tournament goes on. I did go up in tension a little bit from the last match. Maybe that allowed me to feel like I was able to swing a little bit harder.
Yeah, haven't changed anything technically in my serve in the last 48 hours.
Q. I wonder if you saw much of Kyle's match last night. If you did, what did you make of his performance and of Novak's?
ANDY MURRAY: I saw like nine, ten points. I've been sleeping great since I've been here. I don't know why. Last night I tried to get in bed early and I slept for 12 hours straight. I never do that. I never sleep that long. I went to bed very early. I spoke to Leon a little bit today. It seemed like Novak played extremely well, and Kyle maybe didn't play as well as he could until the third set. But, again, it's not maybe Kyle's fault. If Novak plays great tennis, it's not easy to play well against him. Maybe it wasn't until the third set that maybe Novak's level dropped a little bit which allowed Kyle to play a bit better. It's not easy playing against the best player in the world in a night match when you've never played on that court before. It's tricky. I'm sure Kyle will learn from it. But he's had a great, great tournament.
Q. Do you already have the next Davis Cup semifinal on your mind? What are your expectations?
ANDY MURRAY: It's kind of in the back of my mind, yeah. I'm not thinking about it too much. I mean, I'm guessing I'll obviously be in the team. Yeah, head there pretty much as soon as I'm finished here. Maybe have a couple of days at home, then start getting ready for that.
But, yeah, it should be a good match. I mean, Del Potro is obviously playing very well just now, which when the tie was sort of first scheduled, we didn't know really whether he was going to play or how he was feeling. But he's playing great just now. They have a lot of players to choose from.
It's going to be, I think, an exciting Davis Cup match. The crowd will definitely help us. There's always a great atmosphere there.
Q. (Question regarding being in favor of shortening matches.)
ANDY MURRAY: I'm not. I'm not really pro shortening matches at the slams. I'm not necessarily against it either. If that is the way that sort of tennis is going and that is what fans and TV want, that's what they want to see, then we go for it or try it at least.
That's the thing. You don't have to stick by something. You can try it, see how it goes, potentially go back. That's also a possibility.
But, yeah, I'm not there to just sort of represent myself. You're there to do what the whole tour wants. If the tour wants to go to shorter matches, then that's fine. We can try it. If it's a success, great. If it's not, we go back to the old way.
But I think it's quite a long way from happening. I'm happy to try stuff. If it works, great. If it doesn't, then you can always change back.
Q. Now that you're on the ATP players council, where do you stand on the fifth-set tiebreak or playing it out?
ANDY MURRAY: I think it doesn't affect loads of matches really. I think shortening the matches, doing it by playing first to four in sets, first to five even, or best-of-three, whatever, is a better way of shortening matches rather than just the tiebreak in the fifth set. I don't know how many tiebreaks in the fifth set has there been here. One, two. Do you know?
Q. I don't know.
ANDY MURRAY: I don't know either. But I'd imagine it's not very many. Then there would be like, I don't know, 15, 20 five-set matches. It would make sense to look at that first if you were wanting to shorten matches rather than the tiebreak in the fifth, in my opinion.
Q. I'm looking at your match against Nishikori in the Davis Cup, for example.
ANDY MURRAY: What happened there? We didn't go to a tiebreak in the fifth, did we?
Q. Sorry, excuse me.
ANDY MURRAY: Close, but not quite. I think, yeah, it was 6-3 in the fifth maybe. I don't know, 6-3, 6-1.
Q. When you see other players playing well, does it affect how you play? Do you think about sending a message out to other players in the tournament?
ANDY MURRAY: Not purely because I know how much can change in a couple of days. Also matchups, as well. Like the way I would play against Kei would be very different how I would try to play against Grigor.
You know, it's good for myself. I'm more sort of concerned about how I'm feeling just now. It was a very quick match, one where I played very well, got a little bit of confidence back after not playing well a couple days ago. That was very positive for me.
If it has an impact on any of the other players in the tournament, I don't know. You'd have to ask them. But I certainly wasn't out on the court thinking about Kei when I was playing, or Stan or del Potro, anyone else that's left in my half of the draw. I'm just trying to win the matches as quickly and efficiently as I can.
Preach Andy.

Andy in his presser as balanced and reasoned as usual. And the text in bold is so true...use that as my rule of thumb too, particularly if Andy has struggled in a match....every match is different and you can't expect to play at your best every single time. But you know your best is in there. It's the W which matters. Well said champ!!

This article is at odds with what Andy said in his presser...."I've been sleeping great since I've been here. I don't know why"...... In the article he is quoted as saying "I've not been sleeping great...."
Maybe a misprint in one or the other?

K. NISHIKORI/A. Murray
1-6, 6-4, 4-6, 6-1, 7-5
THE MODERATOR: Questions, please.
Q. How disappointed? Back and forth match. Seemed like you had the momentum going for a bit.
ANDY MURRAY: I'm not disappointed in a way. Obviously I would have loved to have won, but I have had a good run every match. I would have loved to have gone further, but it wasn't to be today.
Q. Could you talk us through the dispute with or the conversation with Wayne McKewen, and what exactly was the result...
ANDY MURRAY: Stopped the point, and I was just curious why that was and that was it.
Q. You were saying that you had heard the noise in the first set. She said that you would play on?
ANDY MURRAY: Wayne McKewen told me that it happened four times during the match that the speakers had gone off like that. I had only heard it one time before, which was on set point in the second set. That was it.
Q. You had a period of seven straight games...
ANDY MURRAY: Definitely I would say to 4-1 I didn't play a good game after I got out of the change of ends, and then, you know, he held pretty comfortably the next game.
But after that, I don't think so. You know, there was a lot of time between then. I had a lot of game points in the 4-1 game; didn't get it.
And, yeah, I lost my serve a couple of times from positions that when I was up in the game -- you know, obviously you can get broken when you're up in the game. I got broken once from 40-Love, once from 40-15, and at the end of the match I think I was up 30-15 in the game, as well. That was the difference.
Q. Were you more disappointed the way you were serving and so many times you had been broken or the way you returned? Because at the end of the match you were returning pretty poorly compared to your standard, in my opinion. I don't know what you think.
ANDY MURRAY: Um, I mean, it was obviously different serving under the roof. I started off the match serving pretty well. You know, it obviously slows the conditions down so it becomes easier to return. You know, he started returning a bit better. I didn't serve so well, obviously.
I don't think the reason I lost the match was because of my return game. I broke serve enough times. I just didn't hold serve enough. That was the difference.
Q. You didn't know, but the rain didn't last very long. It was bright sunshine and blue skies. Do you think they should readdress whether or not the roof should be open in that condition?
ANDY MURRAY: Um, it's not really for me to say. We were told at the beginning of the event and also today that, you know, if the forecast's good they will open the roof during the match if that's the case. Why that didn't happen today I don't know.
Yeah, I mean, it's not really for me to say. I mean, they have obviously delays and stuff and matches aren't good for TV and people that are watching. You want a continuous match, for sure. You want to try and complete as many matches outdoors as possible.
Q. (Indiscernible.)
ANDY MURRAY: Um, I mean, I think definitely under the roof he was able to dictate more of the points. You know, he was playing a bit closer to the baseline than me and taking the ball on a little bit more.
You know, at times I was obviously doing more of the running, you know, whereas I think in the first set and a half and when we played in the Olympics, you know, that was the other way around.
Q. Any part of you feel that was the one that got away, or is that giving disservice to Kei?
ANDY MURRAY: Well, obviously I was in a good position up and a set and a break and chances at the beginning of the fourth set, as well. I could have won the match for sure. But, you know, I have also won some over the last, you know, few months I should have lost. Against Steve Johnson at the Olympics I was down a couple of times. The third set against Fognini, I was down a break in the third there. Against Tsonga at Wimbledon I was up, but that could have gone the other way in the beginning of the fifth. You know, it happens sometimes. You win them. I have won a lot over the last few months, but couldn't quite get it going my way today.
Q. How much do you think the workload that you have had comes into that in terms of the resources you have left?
ANDY MURRAY: Um, I don't know. I felt all right today. You know, I felt all right. Kei has played a lot of tennis, as well, though, over the last few months, for sure. But, you know, this slam in particular I think for all of the players, especially the ones, you know, that have done well over the summer period on the hard courts, it's, you know, a tough one. You know, Kei will be feeling it, as well as a lot of the players. Yeah, I don't think that had an impact on the match today.
Q. Kei hurt you a lot with the dropshots. Did you know that was coming? Did he use it a little bit more than you expected? You didn't seem to have an answer for it. It was disguised pretty well.
ANDY MURRAY: Well, yeah, a couple of them. I didn't lose all the points. I won a number of them.
But when you're -- like I said, when he's playing close to the baseline and you're the one that's further back, it leaves more space at the front of the court to use a dropshot. I got a little bit unfortunate on the break point at 5-All, the volley that he made that's not going in every time. You know, that was a big moment in the match, obviously, at that stage.
Q. It's still early. When do you think you'll head up to Glasgow?
ANDY MURRAY: No idea. I haven't thought anything about when I would leave. I was obviously focused purely on this week and obviously wanted to go further.
I don't know when I'll go there. I don't know how many days off I'll take or how much or when I'll start practicing up there. You know, I'm due a few days off, and I'll use them well, because I will need a lot of energy for that tie.
Q. (Question regarding playing on home soil.)
ANDY MURRAY: Yeah, obviously I'll look forward to the match. It should be a great, great atmosphere, great occasion. You know, I would like a little bit more time off, which obviously I will get when Davis Cup is done, but I just need to be smart in the next few days.
Because like I said, I need a lot of energy for those ties. Davis Cup, you know, does take a lot out of you over the weekend. It's tough, especially if you play all three days. You know, I'll need to be smart the next few days to make sure that not only physically I recover, but mentally, as well, because it's always a stressful few days.
Q. There are five men left in the draw now. How do you see it playing out?
ANDY MURRAY: I'd say Novak would be the favorite. I mean, obviously a lot of top, top players left. Gaël has been playing very well. I think in their head to heads, Novak has had quite a little bit of success. You know, the bottom part of the draw it's obviously difficult to pick. They're all top players, I think. You know, Stan and Juan will have a very good match tonight, I would expect. You know, Kei is obviously capable on this surface of beating the best players and has beaten Novak here, as well, so you know, I would put Novak as the favorite, but everyone's got a chance.
Q. I know it's early after the match and disappointment we talked about, but the takeaway from the summer, do you look back and say, It was a heck of a summer? Or are you kind of leaving let down by coming up short?
ANDY MURRAY: I have not let anyone down. I tried my best. I fought as hard as I could with what I had today. I didn't let anyone down. Certainly not myself. I pushed myself as hard as I could over the last few months, and I'm very proud of how I have done.
You know, if someone had offered me the summer that I have had before Wimbledon, I probably would have signed for that. You know, asking me right now is pointless. I'm not going to have the best perspective on things right this minute, but, you know, after a few days, you know, away and stuff, I would imagine I'd be very happy with how I have done and, you know, learn from this match today and the summer as a whole, because, you know, it's been tough. It's been a hard summer. And, yeah, I'm happy with how it's gone. There's just a few things I could do differently next time.
ANDY MURRAY:" I have not let anyone down. I tried my best. I fought as hard as I could with what I had today. I didn't let anyone down. Certainly not myself. I pushed myself as hard as I could over the last few months, and I'm very proud of how I have done."
Thank goodness he recognises the fact. That interview to me sounds as though he is just exhausted and actually glad to be done with it. I think the tank is simply empty. I also think if he hadn't defended his Gold a Medal having been flag bearer, he would have felt he had let people down then. He had a successful Olympics - that trumps The US Open to me, even though it's not a slam.
Well said Teresa. Have some rest, Champ, and come out fighting!

Nice words in an article in The Mail last week from wheelchair tennis winner Jordanne Whiley.
She says of Andy 'You see him on TV and maybe think he is a bit boring but he is truly the nicest guy I have ever met. He takes an interest in wheelchair tennis and always asks about my last tournament or my next opponent. Its so nice that someone of his status takes an interest in us. What I really like about him is that he is just himself - doesn't pretend to be what he is not - great guy'

Well, they've found another reason to give a black mark to Andy Murray - he damaged a butterfly on court ! For a start I doubt if he even knew what it was floating around him and he was otherwise rather pre-occupied.
But if they can score a negative point they will

Astonishing that someone actually wrote that rubbish - even more astonishing that The Independent published it.

Joking aside...
Our reporter Stuart Fraser reveals that a couple of practical jokes have done the rounds in Glasgow already...
"Much intrigue here at the Emirates Arena in Glasgow as we await the draw in the next 15 minutes. Will Great Britain captain Leon Smith go for Kyle Edmund or Dan Evans as his No. 2 singles player, and who will Daniel Orsanic pick for Argentina? The latter is of the most interest as that will dictate whether Andy Murray will play Juan Martin del Potro on Friday or Sunday.
"Both teams enjoyed the official dinner at Glasgow’s Corinthian Club last night. There was much hilarity when, during his speech, Leon Smith jokingly offered Del Potro the opportunity of a Glasgow kiss – the locals know this as a headbutt - from Dan Evans. The Argentine unknowingly accepted. Thankfully, though, Evans did not deliver.
"Hitting partner Liam Broady also had to do a speech and was clearly stitched up by one of his fellow team-mates when he asked at the end for Argentina captain “Juan Riquelme” to come up on stage. Unbeknown to him, the captain is not a former Barcelona and Boca Juniors midfielder..."
