It’s depressing, but I can’t get excited about next year. I think it’s the year he is going to be forced to retire. His style of play is so attritional. I can’t see him managing it with a broken down hip.

Typical Briggs speculation. Take a close look at the language. As always, it's all 'feels this, understood to be that, may be the other'. No journalist can report with certainty something as factual as Andy's second daughter's name, yet they think have insight into this most private and complex of health issues. Dear Lord, there's not enough faces and palms in the world to cope with Briggs and his ilk. .....but here's a start :facepalm::facepalm:

I'm not getting too worried about it. Andy posted on FB yesterday that he would be sharing photos of his Miami training block over the coming days - clearly a positive message to his fans that he is on his way back. Could be a multitude of reasons that he's delayed his departure to Aus for a few days. Even if he isn't quite ready for Brisbane, he seems to be in a positive frame of mind

Trying hard to be chilled about all this - Andy will come back when he's ready. Yes, we all want to see him play asap, but if it takes a bit longer than we hoped, then we have to trust he knows what he's doing and it will be even better when we finally get to see him play again!

Pat Cash has thoughts.

"“It’s a mystery to me why Murray does not just hang his racquet up and enjoy life. He must love it,” Cash told London’s Daily Express.

....hmm, maybe for the same reason Fed didn't hang up his racquet when being written off.

I'm taken aback that Cash has said this. As a former Wimbledon champion, I thought he would have more of a winner's mentality/respect. Clearly not. In my view, anyone telling another person they should call it a day in their chosen career is incredibly arrogant. Retirement is such an emotional and personal decison for anybody, but especially so for people who have careers that are by their nature short. The NHS and many other institutions are not allowed to ask employees about when they plan to retire, the reasoning being that since there is no compulsary age to retire, it is a purely personal decision that should not be interferred in. It's good reasoning, and in a simialr vein only Andy, Fed etc know what is right for them so people should keep their noses out.

“My hip feels way better than it did at Wimbledon and way better than it did at the US Open,” Murray said. “At Wimbledon, I almost made the semi-finals and I was really struggling badly. So if it's better than that then that's positive.

“But playing the matches and getting used to that intensity again and how you recover from a match is kind of what is important. And I'm hoping I'm going to be okay, but you never know for sure until you go through it.”

He hit with the Argentinian Federico Delbonis, though his practice session was cut short by rain on a typically hot and steamy Brisbane day.

“I felt OK today, actually, a bit better than I did in the match in Abu Dhabi,” Murray said afterwards. “I'm hoping that's going to keep getting better with each day I practise with better players.

(3) Pair Of Returns: Not only is Murray making a comeback on the ATP World Tour, but the Scot returns to Brisbane for the first time since defeating Dimitrov to defend his title in 2013. Murray is No. 16 in the ATP Rankings -- the same spot that Federer started 2017 from before ending the year at No. 2. Murray has not played on tour since the Wimbledon quarter-finals on 12 July due to a hip injury.

ATP (http://www.atpworldtour.com/en/news/2018-preview-battle-for-no-1) - Will New Faces Challenge Legends For No. 1 Mantle in 2018?

7) No. 16 Andy Murray (https://www.atpworldtour.com/en/players/andy-murray/mc10/overview)
The Scot surely would have preferred a more fruitful stay at No. 1. Murray, who ascended to the top place in November 2016, fell from No. 1 in August after eight months of not playing his best tennis. In 2016, Murray finished 78-9, including his 24-match win streak to end the year. In his injury-shortened 2017, the Brit went 25-10, calling it a campaign because of his lingering hip injury after a Wimbledon quarter-final loss to American Sam Querrey.

But if Murray is healthy, why not expect the Brit to once again beat the very best in men's tennis? In 2017, neither Federer nor Nadal matched Murray's 24-match win streak, and the three-time Grand Slam champion and 14-time Masters 1000 titlist relishes facing a doubting audience.

Re the World No 1 - he has been there, done it and got the T Shirt. Nothing can ever take that away from him. If he wants to keep playing all well and good, but I just want him to remember he is 30 with two young children. Those hips will have to see him through many post tennis years, regardless of when he hangs up his raquet.

It's no surprise that Rafa, one of the nicest players on the tour, has offered his support to Andy during his injury nightmare. Rafa, who is struggling/has struggled with a knee injury himself, will know only too well what Andy is going through.

Is it any wonder that Andy is reluctant to tell the press anything; they have now moved from speculation about his injury to outright criticism of his handling of it:

'Murray’s errors have compounded his problems - he must get next move right' by Stu Fraser, The Times

https://www.thetimes.co.uk/edition/sport/murrays-errors-have-compounded-his-problems-he-must-get-next-move-right-mnjk02fln

It's a free country and people are entitled to their opinions, but it really gets to me when speculation tips over into individuals presuming to know more about Andy's situation than Andy:rolleyes: I really should turn off the Andy news alert on my phone

To balance things out, here is a link to another article in The Times. It is equally speculative but with a positive bent.

https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/andy-murrays-surgery-decision-may-make-or-break-career-gb89pdt8q

For those without a Times sub, I have posted the best bit which is sports physio Robert Brown explaining why Andy could still return to a very high standard.

'Surgery is a risk worth taking'
Robert Brown, Sports Physiotherapist

The hip is a weight-bearing joint that takes a lot of stress. The main reason hip problems affect tennis players is the fast, rotational change of direction that is so much part of the game. The hard surfaces they play on also place a lot of stress on the hip.

The longer Andy Murray’s injury troubles him, the more concerning it is, but it doesn’t necessarily mean he can’t get back to 100 per cent.

Hip surgery can be difficult to recover from because the hip is a ball-and-socket joint, so a lot of the stability comes from pressure within the socket, and then you have this capsule that comes over the top — stability of the hip is created by those two structures. Surgery means disrupting those structures and therefore the stability.

Recovery differs from person to person, surgery to surgery, but you’re looking at six to 12 weeks.

With the simplest of surgery the pain will be well under control after a day or two. Patients get rid of their crutches after day two and will even be walking and sleeping fairly comfortably after the third day. It’s not so much about the pain, it’s about the function of the hip. The hardest thing is to function at that 100 per cent.

It is possible for Murray to get back to his previous level of fitness. At 30, he will still have good biochemical healing factors, his age won’t prevent him from getting back. Murray is very experienced so he’ll know the rehab process and know his body very well. Hopefully, that will help him get back to where he wants to be.

• Robert Brown is a sports physiotherapist at The Centre for Health & Human Performance.

P.s. if anyone ever wants a full Times article PM me - always happy to paste them into a message.

I would be an idiot to let the loud mouthed, ill informed, self righteous, leeches upset me so, how about this for an idea.
Let them carry on (and they will,) digging the very big hole they will have to crawl out of at some point. Covered in the crap they keep around them.
As the press/reporters/and other negative types generally end up doing.
But it won't matter as there's always another for them to move on to.
They never learn look at all the other times they've done this kinda stuff to Andy????

They must know just as we do it's only tomorrows chip paper.

The press are only doing their job - they've written plenty of great articles about Andy in the past.

And there are lots of different views expressed in these articles about Andy's future - the same as there are on here.

Of course we are wondering and speculating - we wouldn't be human if we weren't.

The press articles at Xmas were accurate despite all the comments on here about them being made up.

RosieBear

Journalism is a noble profession and we need our free press, but inevitably when facts are so scarce reporting on this issue has been dubious.

The reports at Christmas had a 50-50 chance of bearing out - Andy would either play the AO or he wouldn't - Andy's withdrawal no confirmation of their quality and certainly don't trust the writers going forward. *All* reports, upbeat and gloomy, are 'made up' since nobody but Andy and his innermost circle know the facts. And some elements are unknowable even by Andy.

It's frustrating and difficult to accept but the only thing we know is that we know nothing, and that includes the press.

Josephine
05-01-2018, 10:44
What they were saying was that he had delayed his departure to Australia because his recovery was not complete - that he was a doubt for Australia and that this injury could have a longer term effect on his career. That was all true. Though you are right too much of what they say is speculation - but listen to pundits in any sports - or political commentators. Who will win the match or the election? - 'experts' are asked to use their 'knowledge and judgement' to predict what will happen.

You are also right that we know nothing - that is why we are looking at different sources of information and grabbing on to straws of comfort when we find them.

GUARDIAN today, kevin mitchell (https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2018/jan/05/andy-murrays-lost-six-months)
this is a history of Andy's hip problem - starting as a "searing pain" when losing to Stan wawrinka at Roland Garros, the French Open.
if the problem stems from an injury rather than an abnormality then a cure/healing should be possible - hope so anyway.

Bit off topic but that article refers to Andy being commemorated near the Fred Perry statue? Hadn't heard anything about this and if there is something it's been put there since last Wimbledon.

Emotions running high all around - Andy means so much to many people.

My sincere prayers are for a full recovery - for him and, indeed, for us. But my Dad used to tell me that every cloud-however black, always has a silver lining so I am trying to find positives to hang on to.

Let start with
Andy may yet play doubles with Jamie - Bruno may be retiring in a year of so and we could cheer the Murrays to the rooftops
If Andy gets underway as a mentor we will have new - and hard working - Brits to follow and cheer for.
With Andy's vast knowledge and understanding of the play/tactics of tennis, he will make an amazing pundit which means we will see him on TV a great deal
Andy is a member of Wimbledon and Queens and will surely be in constant attendance during that time
It wont be long before Sue Barker talks him in to 'A Question of Sport'

OK, it wont make up for losing him on the singles circuit but God Bless Him for the pleasure and joy he has given us already. Being there and watching him win his second Wimbledon title on centre was one of my life highlights....I'm sure you all have your own.
What is nice is that the press finally as a group are all admitting what we have known for ever - Andy is a dedicated athlete and a decent, warm young man -pity it took all this to get them to say it but better late than never

Times (https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/lta-prevented-andy-murray-inspiring-more-kyle-edmunds-zwj2h2gms) - Thank Andy Murray, not British tennis, for Kyle Edmund’s success

His transition from young prospect to genuine contender coincided with time spent in the company of Murray. During his teenage years, he had worked with decent coaches and players, but the Scot opened his eyes to a brave, new world. “He’s been a good role model for everyone,” Edmund told Tennis.com. “His training on court, the intensity he trains at, the length, the physicality he goes, the rallies, the hours he puts in off the court, as well, in the gym. After weights, it’s an hour doing an ice bath and recovery and then treatment on the bed . . . Before the tennis starts there’s probably 45 minutes to an hour of stretching and Pilates . . . When you’re a junior, you don’t see that side . . . But when you really need to knuckle down and you realise this is a job, this is a life, a commitment, then you realise what it takes.”

When Kedders met Muzza
.......A first Davis Cup call-up in 2014 would also prove to be a major milestone, as he came under the wing of one of the best players in the world.

Murray invited Edmund to one of his famously punishing training blocks in Miami at the end of the year, and the Scot has been a huge influence ever since.

Given first-hand experience of what it takes to make the top of the game, the diligent Edmund took note.
On the court, he became only the sixth man in history to make his Davis Cup debut in the final, blasting his way to an unexpected two-set lead over David Goffin before eventually losing in five.
Murray would lead the side to their first victory since 1936 and "Kedders" - as he is known - played the role of youngster in a squad full of jokes and merciless mickey-taking.
"The Davis Cup has been a vehicle to give him confidence and some big stages. From that, he got to spend a lot of time with Andy," said Great Britain captain Leon Smith.

"I think he has done three pre-seasons with Andy in Miami and one in Dubai, and he has got to rub shoulders with Andy on a regular basis - that can only help a young player coming through."

Andy Murray to play in Dutch grass-court tournament in June

https://www.thetimes.co.uk/edition/sport/andy-murray-to-play-in-dutch-grass-court-tournament-in-june-k0np2qp5v

For the first time in his career, Andy Murray will play a Wimbledon warm-up tournament outside of the United Kingdom after signing up for the Libema Open in the small southern Dutch town of Rosmalen.

Murray is currently training on court at the Mouratoglou Academy in the south of France, while also organising his comeback schedule. His grass-court season will begin at the Libema Open, held from June 11-17, and will continue the following week with the Fever-Tree Championships at the Queen’s Club in London.

It is still possible that Murray will return to competition before this, providing that his rehabilitation from hip surgery continues to progress well. An appearance at the Surbiton grass-court Challenger from June 4-10 is unlikely, but the new Loughborough Challenger on indoor hard courts from May 21-27 is an option he is considering.

Murray is usually content with playing just one grass-court tournament before Wimbledon but the circumstances are different this year, having not played a competitive match since he lost in the quarter-finals at Wimbledon last July.

“I am looking forward to getting back on the grass and to play in Rosmalen for the first time,” Murray said. “I’ve heard lots of good things about the tournament and the courts are meant to be very good. It’s the perfect way for me to prepare for Wimbledon.”

This is a significant coup for the Libema Open — which offers 250 ranking points for the champion and a total prize pot of around £600,000 — securing the participation of Murray before the concurrent Stuttgart Open, although they had to fork out a six-figure appearance fee to receive his commitment at this early stage.

“In the past years we invested heavily in the quality of the tournament and the grass courts,” Marcel Hunze, the tournament director, said. “The participation of the [former] Wimbledon champion and grass-court specialist Andy Murray is a great reward.”

Murray only returned to the practice court in the past fortnight and has been using the Mouratoglou Academy facilities in Nice since last Saturday. He is practising on an outdoor hard court with Aidan McHugh, the 17-year-old from Glasgow who is part of his 77 Sports Management stable.

I've seen several pics over the last week on Twitter & FB with Andy wearing glasses - he seems to still be in the South of France and several selfies taken by fans have surfaced with him in glasses. All have been off court photos so I guess he must be wearing contact lenses on court. Just curious if this a new thing - never seen him wearing glasses before

I'm the same and just came on the AMFF to see if I could find any news about it. He looks good in them but I hope he's not going to start wearing those weird sports specs or staring and blinking manically like Novak. :surprised:

Andy Murray supporters will be pleased to hear that they may soon be treated to behind-the-scenes footage taken during his rehabilitation from hip surgery. The 30-year-old Briton has had a camera operator accompany him at several stages during his recovery process. He and his team are still yet to decide exactly how they will release it.

I feel main reason no news is forthcoming is because Andy, like all players, wants to keep his cards close to his chest. Extremely rare for any of them to divulge any great detail re injury/recovery to press. Only sensible. Personally think Andy is doing exactly the right thing in controlling the release of information so tightly, even if frustrating for fans.

Quote from the Washington Post

The 30-year-old father of two spoke Friday about his eagerness to return to the court after more than nine months away — by far the most time he has missed in his career. A back surgery in 2013 waylaid him for less than four months, most of which was during the offseason.
“This time’s been harder. . . . There’s been a lot more ups and downs this time,” Murray said. “It’s been a longer and lot more complex than the back issue. Having been through a back injury and a difficult surgery before helps, but the back injury was easier because I was back on the court competing quite soon afterwards.”

BBC (https://www.bbc.com/sport/tennis/43964642)- Wimbledon 2018: Serena Williams could be top seed on return

Despite the possibility for Williams, Britain's two-time men's champion Andy Murray will not be seeded if he is not ranked in the top 32 when the Championships begin in July.
Murray, 31, has not played competitively since losing in the Wimbledon quarter-finals last year because of a hip injury.
The Scot had surgery in January and has been back training on court, but is extremely unlikely to climb back into the top 32 before Wimbledon.
"We take into account grass-court results from preceding years but the agreement we have with the ATP is based on computer formula," Lewis said.
"Andy wouldn't be put in the top 32 if he isn't in that formula."
It means Murray could be drawn against, for example, Roger Federer or Rafael Nadal in the first round.

"I don't know if Andy was watching, I'm sure if he could he would be watching to see how I got on. He's been great just having him around, obviously he knows what he's talking about so any kind of advice and guidance helps me loads."
