Well, Andy was very honest about his loss to Fed and seemed remarkably accepting of it so that makes me feel a bit better.
Let's hope he can tuck it away firmly in a 'past history' suitcase and start afresh even better next year

Andy did win something this weekend although he had to share it with Chris Hoy. They were joint winners of Scottish Sportsperson of the Year 2012 awarded at the Commonwealth Games Awards Dinner on Saturday. The other nominees were gold medallist rower Katherine Grainger and the silver medallist, swimmer Michael Jamieson.

Good for Andy.

It's not just losing 3 days from his training schedule. The effects of jetlag from going back and forth over the Pond in a short space of time which has the potential to mess up his training for a week out of his month with Lendl. He can ill afford to lose 25% of his time in Florida for the sake of a few hours on a live TV programme.

I'm a died in the wool Andy fan, I adore the guy and he'll get my vote. But I dont think he has done himself a lot of good by avoiding Spoty. People will see it as a snub...and indeed in some ways it is. I think he may well have won and - in a way - I think he owes it to his faithful fans to be present. We know what a nice guy he is but many people dont - they got an insight at Wimbledon - but ignoring Spoty which is one of the biggest sports celebrations of the year may well be a mistake in my opinion.
I understand that he is totally committed to fitness next year - Ivan Lendl never conceded to anything in his determination to succeed and Andy already had that self-focus which undoubtedly is encouraged by his mentor.
Would 3 days - in first class luxury - have made a difference ? Who knows ?

Sorry folks - rarely do I criticise, but I think he should be there

Other people have won (Flintoff, for example) and haven't been there.
But for what it's worth (and heaven only knows HOW they are going to do it this year) I think there are more obvious front runners in the pack this year.
In any OTHER year, I think that USO win would have done it for him.... but this year... my money is on Sir Chris Hoy, or an athlete (again I would probably veer towards Mo Farah for his double) but would put Jess in the running ... Wiggins is in the mix too... gawd TOO MANY!!!!

I honestly can't even begin to think how they are going to pick just one outstanding sporting achievement!
(and more worryingly - sport in general, now, not just tennis) will we EVER see the sporting like of this year again?

Why on earth would Andy disrupt his first real training block with Lendl to attend SPOTY - it just wouldn't make any sense.

Bardot
13-11-2012, 16:24
As far as I recall Andy has been nominated for SPOTY 6 times in the last 7 years (more than anyone else with 2010 the missing year) and has never attended and I agree now is not the time to break that tradition. He's got to do what is good for himself. In 2008 I think there was a live link to Miami and they might do the same again.

and as for the 3 days how about the jet lag changinng time zone twice in 3 days, cane it make a difference ? lets see today is the 13th so lets say andy has 7-10 days holiday with kim and can be in miami by 23rd so that will give him 7 days in november we know his first tournement is dec29th lets assume he gos there 3-4 days before hand to acclimatise that would mean he will have to leave by say 26th now letssay wegive him xmass day off thats 24 days in december we then have 7 + 24 days =31,so loosing 3 days equates to losing ten percent from his training block
so andy should turn up at Aus open 90% fit, so he can attend a bbcback slapping excercise

I can't see Andy winning SPOTY unless he wins Wimbledon and even then it's questionable. Tennis is not a major sport in Britain and, sadly, outside the tennis fraternity, Andy is not widely regarded as one of Britain's favourite sportsmen. When BBC Breakfast took a straw poll in the street no-one mentioned Andy - Wiggins, Farrah and Ennis were most definitely the front runners. Andy's quite right not to disrupt his training block - I can't see him ever doing so even if he was odds on to win it. He's not being dismissive - the timing is just not right for him.

Well said J. I agree with what you say, Why should he disrupt his training just to go to an awards ceremony. He's to be home for Christmas Day then a day or so later goes to Abu Dhabi. I'm sure his faithful fans would prefer him to be fine-toned & ready for a successful 2013 & that he has a Christmas at home

It doesn't really matter whether the perpetrators were Swiss, English, Scottish or Outer Mongolian the behaviour was totally unacceptable and the fact that the umpire did nothing about it and the commentators did not do enough to condemn it is equally appalling.

Wow....what an amazing comment. Never have I felt more uncomfortable on this site as an English Andy fan than the past few days.....and this might just be the icing on the cake :(

I think we all need to be aware of being too nationalistic.
I am Northern Irish and live in England and hear and read a lot of unpleasant stuff directed towards andy that is from
English national zealots. There are also times when the scots both on here and elsewhere are anti English.
It is disturbing when British fans don't support andy. It is also understandable when they have been supporting the worlds
greatest player for many years in a sport that is traditionally regarded as individually played ie not associated with
countries.
It is also disturbing when people, some on here, make sweeping generalisations about the English, Wimbledon etc when
perhaps it is the behaviour of a few of one particular crowd at one particular event represented by one particular
TV angle. For a start just because it is held in England doesn't mean that the event is attended by solely English.

Nationalities are sensitive subjects and we all need to be aware of them and understand the issues not compound them!

And that's exactly where this World Tour Finals comes into the conversation. If Djokovic, who already has one win over Murray in London, wins the year-end championships, his own case as Player of the Year is enhanced. What better way to underscore your consistency than by sweeping the playoffs?

And Federer can make a similar, if not quite as compelling a case, if he takes the WTF for a mind-boggling seventh time. There's no consensus way to determine an inarguable Player of the Year, and no transparent, statistically based way of choosing one. There's an excellent article by Matthew Syed in today's Times - headed "Time to make a racket for un-spun hero"
He mentions the reaction of the crowd on Sunday, and continues
"...at the O2, and on a multitude of internet forums, he [Andy] continues to divide opinion. My suspicion is that this is because he does not go overboard in trying to spin himself into the nation's hearts. What you see is what you get. He is far less interested in ingratiating himself to Middle England than in trying to win tennis matches..."

He then raises the issue of SPOTY and how Andy has decided not to break his training programme "...This, it seems to me, is a thoroughly admirable stance. I just wish that others would see Murray for the hard-working, un-spun and rather inspirational figure he is."

It's good to read. And cheering. I felt Sunday was an incredibly unsatisfying way to close Andy's great year; and seeing the moronic comments accompanying his SPOTY decision on other sites across the net you realise all the negativity is still around. Sigh.

Sorry guys, but you need to pay to see this one, but you can at least read the first paragraph of Times articles now and sometimes there is a picture viewable.

For copyright reasons we can only post short extracts from The Times articles online.
It's quite difficult pulling out one or two paragraphs which give a flavour of the whole piece whilst not giving the wrong impression either.

Anyhow - here goes with a couple of extracts from Neil Harmans article on Lendl (link in Cazza's post above). They are at random and mostly about the focus of the work ahead.

A partnership formed over an Italian meal at a nondescript restaurant just off a Florida highway has developed into the most talked about liaison in the men’s game, the product of Murray’s fascination with someone who had been through the same agonies and, in Lendl’s case, to make a real champion out of a player that he had really only seen on television but knew he could help.

In close-up — and not everyone might share the opinion — Murray looks better. He has become more distinguished in every way. The test of any alliance is that it survives early misgivings, concerns and both sides emerge stronger. Using any measure, Lendl and Murray have been very good together and what is more, they are in it for the long haul.
.......

We really haven’t had much time to look at his overall game — that will come at the training camp next month. We have four weeks there, then I believe things will get even better. I am sure he would have liked to have won more than three events this year. It might have looked better on his record had he won seven, but would he have preferred to win more, or the events he won?”
.......

“Andy can win the French Open, but there are a lot of other players besides Nadal who can play on clay. I know it is the most difficult for him, but if he works on the things I want him to work on, of course he can do it.”

The 2013 clay-court season starts the week after Britain’s next Davis Cup tie against Russia in April.
I wouldn’t put too much money on Murray playing that particular tie.

I want real personis it such a bad thing to be true to yourself we here see feds arrogance as a bad thing but others have said to me on numerous occasions the self same thing about Andy and i have dismissed it as confidence and asserted you need a bit of brashness to make it in sport. i dont know is it so wrong to believe you are the best at something ?im not sure its possible to play a grand slam final if you dont set out believing you can win it

Coach of the year

This has to go to a rookie in the job by the name of Ivan Lendl. 'It has taken courage for Andy to hire me and I admire his guts because it ups the ante for him,' said Lendl in early January. His greatest achievement was to get Murray to absorb and put into practice similar ideas that previous coaches had been unable to get across.

Consigned to history

The phrase 'Fred Perry, Britain’s last winner of a Grand Slam singles title in 1936.' We have Andy Murray to thank for that, and the Olympic gold and silver medals were not a bad effort either (Roger Federer-supporting British fans please note).

Jonny English

Before Wimbledon Jonny Marray was barely known outside the parish of British tennis, a journeyman battler with an unusually good volley. All of a sudden the 31 year-old from Sheffield emerged blinking into the spotlight with Frederik Nielsen in Tin Cup fashion to go on and win the title. And he still drives his old Ford Fiesta.

Here come the girls

Just when Laura Robson appeared to have surged ahead by winning Olympic silver and making the US Open fourth round, back came Heather Watson to win the HP Open in Osaka and become the first British woman in 24 years to win a title on the main WTA Tour. Encouragingly, we are only in the foothills of this rivalry and look out next year for Jo Konta.

From Jon Wertheim's mailbag today: (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/tennis/news/20121121/davis-cup-mailbag/)

As usual, I find myself in agreement with 98.5 percent of what you write, but can't agree that Djokovic faces pressure greater than Murray does from his homeland. Djokovic is feted as a hero in Serbia. Period. Murray's treatment at home depends way more on how well he does from one tournament to the next. His home fans are far more fickle. Don't you think?
-- Ian, Herndon, Va.

• Yes, Murray bears (or bore?) the pressure of a nation and its fickle fans. And it wasn't simply that their affection for him changed in lockstep with his results; their perception of his nationality -- is he British or Scottish? -- changed with his results. But, ultimately, he was/is an athlete, playing a sport well behind soccer/football in the public consciousness. The national reaction to his previous failures? It was hardly despondence. It was mild disappointment from a self-assured country that does self-effacement and irony quite well.

Djokovic's case is entirely different. We've discussed this in greater detail in a past mailbag, but in many ways he is the face of the "new" Serbia.

Not Serbian sports. Serbia. Political candidates seek his endorsement. The country's wealthiest financiers seek his friendship. So do overseas financiers interested developing that mall in Belgrade or making those bond offerings. His quotes, and even tweets, are parsed like sacred texts. I've written this before but something like one-in-six Serbian kids have Djokovic's face as their Facebook avatar.

Andy Murray – a taped copy of his on-court musings in 2012. The past year has been a breakthrough for the Scot with Olympic gold, a Wimbledon final and then the big one, a first grand slam title at the US Open. He deserves all his success but it would be interesting to see what he thought of a nice collection of his own mid-match ramblings. Shakespearean it isn’t (except for some of the language).

And yet, one statistic – taken from the ATP’s FedEx Reliability Zone – may explain why he has not made it into the top four. Against top 10 players, he has a record of 44 wins and 73 losses, which puts him way down the career list at 45th place. All four of Djokovic, Federer, Murray and Nadal are in the top 10 all-time, which says a lot for their ability on the biggest stages, under the most intense of pressure. Bjorn Borg tops the all-time list with 67 wins to 28 losses at a percentage of 70.5 percent, while Federer just edges out Nadal for second and Djokovic and Murray are eighth and ninth respectively.

:thanks: cazza and all who contribute the links on this thread.

Love this quote from Lendl. This time last year we didn't even know he was going to be onboard as Andy's Coach. But I think it's great he's in Andy's corner. Here's to 2013

“Andy needs to motivate himself like every other player. He needs to set goals and then try to achieve those goals. They need to be high but realistic and once you achieve those goals, then that’s your motivation,” said Lendl.
He added: “I think having a good relationship, enjoying each other’s company while working together makes it easier because the work is very hard for Andy.
“If it’s fun, it’s easier to do.”

[There've been a number of Lendl articles, but this quote is from here: http://www.timesofmalta.com/articles/view/20121124/tennis/Lendl-cool-on-back-to-back-Grand-Slams-for-Murray.446706 ]

There's a long article by Neil Harman in today's Times. An interesting read, which I think, is taken from an article which will appear in the forthcoming December 10 issue of ESPN magazine.
Andy: ..."I have worked on being more aggressive on the court, but it's one thing to work on in practice and another to actually want to go for it and take that chance when it comes to break point in the fifth set of a slam...That's more of a mindset thing that Ivan has spoken to me about before a lot of the big matches this year....I feel more free to go for my shots and be a bit more aggressive...I can take a few more chances because I don't feel the pressure of having to prove something every time I step on to the court." :)

Performance of the year – Andy Murray beating Roger Federer for Olympic gold: There were numerous possibilities for this one, including Yaroslava Shvedova’s golden set against Sara Errani at Wimbledon, but when it comes down to a single, sustained performance, Murray wins it, hands down. Not only had he suffered another heart-breaking loss to Federer just a month before, in his first Wimbledon final, but again he was trying to make history and to add to it all, it was his home Olympics. But something at Wimbledon that week galvanised him again, lifting him to a new high and the way he dismantled Federer in the final was breathtaking. Perhaps Federer was tired – he certainly was not at his very best – but Murray was virtually perfect and the way he slammed down a couple of aces to finish it off was pure class.

Player of the year: Andy Murray. So Roger Federer won his seventeenth grand slam title, and became the first man in history to spend more than 300 weeks at the top of the rankings. And Serena Williams was so disturbed by her first-round defeat at the French Open that she went on to win the Wimbledon Championships, the Olympic gold and the US Open. While Novak Djokovic’s 2012 season wasn’t as spectacular as when he ripped through the men’s game, it was never going to be, and he still won a slam and finished a second successive season as the world number one. But, for the player of the season, you have to look elsewhere, to the man who was the first British male for 76 years to win a grand slam singles title. Also in Andy Murray’s body of work in 2012: playing in his first Wimbledon final and winning Olympic gold in front of a home crowd (Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic will never do that).

interview with Andy

ASSAEL: Sean Connery, a fellow Scot, was at the U.S. Open to cheer you on. Your mom, who coaches Great Britain's Fed Cup team, was there too. Who's tougher: James Bond or your mom?
MURRAY: [Laughing] I think I'd take James Bond over my mom any day of the week. I'm a huge James Bond fan, actually, so that was cool. I've met him a few times, and he is a very tough man. But my mom is very emotional, like me. I think it hurts her more than me sometimes when I lose tough matches.

ASSAEL: You're spending December in Miami with Ivan. What are you two going to be working on?
MURRAY: Most of the stuff I want to work on is ways of shortening points. The transition of going from the back of the court to the net is something I could improve. I really want to shorten points by coming forward more, attacking my opponent's second serve more and improving my own second serve so I don't have to run as much. It's getting so physical -- if you're playing longer points, it's going to have an effect on the length of your career.

si.com (http://tennis.si.com/2012/12/04/roger-federer-rafael-nadal-feuds/) - 2012 BTB Awards: Memorable feuds
Beyond the Baseline

• Tommy Haas vs. Andy Murray: If there’s a theme to this year’s feuds, it’s that players really don’t like it when someone fakes (or is perceived to be faking) an injury. Haas took Murray to task in an interview with German radio, just weeks after Virginia Wade had labeled Murray a “drama queen” for hobbling to victory against Jarkko Nieminen at the French Open.

“It’s difficult when you play against someone on the court like he is not well or injured,” Haas told Germany’s Sport1 television. “I find no one does this better than Murray. Sometimes he looks like he can barely move, then comes the trainer and he moves like a cat. I believe everyone knows this. People talk about it in the locker room. Maybe he would like to take some pressure off himself. He tells himself, ‘Maybe I have a niggle or a problem, I’m not feeling too well but I’m going to try it anyway.’ But he is such a talented player that he does not need to.”

Murray’s response?

“Nothing to say on it. That’s good. Good for him,” Murray said. “The time I have been on tour I’ve been called many, many things. My personality not being exciting enough. I have been called boring. It was said I was unfit, lazy, fake injuries. I mean, all sorts. It’s something that kind of goes hand in hand with playing sport. People criticize you regularly. You need to just deal with it. But I don’t care for his opinion.”

WINNER: Murray. Haas wasn’t raising an issue that wasn’t already discussed. Murray and Novak Djokovic both have this reputation. But Murray’s response gave some insight into just how much he hears and how he deals with the criticism.

“I’m going to try this (to speak) and it’s not going to be easy (voice cracking up)….“I’m going to try and not look at them (his family and friends) otherwise I’ll start crying again but everyone in that corner over there that’s supported me. This tournament is always tough and you did a great job so thank you.” (cue family and friends in tears). “Last of all [thanks] to you guys. Everybody always talks about the pressure of playing at Wimbledon, how tough it is but it’s not the people watching (that makes it tough), they make it so much easier to play. The support’s been incredible, so thank you.” (voice cracking up again). Andy Murray after losing to Roger Federer in the Wimbledon final.

“I was down near the royal box area in front of Roger Federer’s family and then I hugged Andy Murray.I just thought I had to be there.” Henry Caplan, the young boy who asked for, and received, a hug from Andy Murray after the Scot won Olympic gold.

“As a person, which is much more important than the tennis, she’s a lovely person.”
Andy Murray pays tribute to Kim Clijsters, who also retired from the sport at the US Open, scene of three of her four grand slam titles.

I read an interesting tidbit indirectly related to Andy this morning in my Globe and Mail. I tried to see if I could find the article in the online edition but no luck so I will quote directly from the piece itself. It's about Donald Trump's new golf course thingy in Scotland. App. a whisky company voted Michael Forbes as Top Scot over Andy Murray. (Forbes is the neighbour to Trump's golf course and is opposing it.) Trump said the decision was "an insult to both Andy Murray and Scotland itself". So now Trump won't allow Glenfiddich into any of his hotels.

Have just added this to the SPOTY thread http://uk.eurosport.yahoo.com/blogs/armchair-pundit/heroes-2012-andy-murray-122129856.html
It's a good read.

There's an article in today's Times about Jonny Marray which gives additional information to the article cazza links above. In the Times, it says that he will start the new year partnering Andre Sa.
He says "..I like the way Andre plays, I was trying to get someone preferably in the top 30-40 so we could get into the Masters Series but also someone to gel with. We'll start off the year together and see how it goes."

Wasn't Sa Jamie's partner for some tournies this year? Wonder where this leaves Jamie? I really wish he could sort out a more settled partnership.

Great article in The Times today about Andy - well worth buying if you can.
For those who are signed up online here's a link to it (http://www.thetimes.co.uk/tto/sport/tennis/article3626933.ece).
It's a pain that you have to pay to view ...

It's a lengthy piece over 2 pages with a fab photo of Andy and his US Open trophy.
Here are some "extracts" ... just the quotes from Andy and a couple from Jamie.

Andy Murray: I know I had the Olympic experience but I was still doubting myself right up to a few minutes before I went out to play. You’re thinking: “Are you going to be able to do this? This is going to be tough. The matches against him [Djokovic] are always going to hurt. Physically it’s challenging. I have been in this position many times and not managed to get through.” So there are a lot of things you’re thinking about before you go out on the court.

Jamie Murray (watching in an hotel in Luxembourg with his doubles partner that week, André Sá, of Brazil): The bar had closed and we had to go and watch the last set in reception. It was about two in the morning. I was very calm throughout the match, despite how tough it was but I thought the [windy] conditions would suit Andy. They were both playing some ridiculous tennis and when Djokovic came back into the match I didn’t think Andy was playing any worse but Novak was playing some amazing stuff. He went up two or three levels. All the while, though, I felt that this was Andy’s time to win. Nothing was going to change that.

Andy Murray: I wasn’t thinking about [what happened to him in] the other finals. I was thinking more about what happened in the last couple of sets and the situation I found myself in, after I guess it was nearly four hours of play by that stage.
I went to the toilet after the fourth set and had a think and said: “It’s just one more set. Give everything. You don’t want to come off this court with any regrets. Don’t get too down on yourself. Just try and fight.” I got a bit fortunate to get the break at the beginning of the set with a net cord on the slice backhand. I settled down a bit after that.

Andy Murray: You’re feeling a lot of things. I cried a little bit on the court. You’re not sad; you’re incredibly happy. You’re in a little bit of disbelief because when I have been in that position many times before and not won, you do think, you know: “Is it ever going to happen?”

Then when it finally does, you think in terms of the training that you do, the physical suffering, the stuff you put your body through on a weekly basis to try and prepare for these moments so you can play for 4½ hours at a high intensity. I’m very fortunate to be able to do this for a living. But, when you get so close to achieving the last goal I had to achieve in tennis in winning a grand slam, and when you have been there many times and not done it, it is easy to doubt yourself.

Jamie Murray: I don’t find it tough to watch him but I don’t like to be in the players’ box. It’s not fun to watch it from there because you can’t do anything, you have to sit there and be quiet and not have any facial expressions and I would rather watch it on TV where if I can get up and walk around or have a shower, I can do that. I saw him run to his players’ box but I didn’t see him lift the trophy. I sent him a text. He’s my brother. I was so proud of him. But I had to go to bed.

Great piece in The Times just published online by Neil Harman - and a fab photo of Andy!
£'s required to read it though.
http://www.thetimes.co.uk/tto/sport/tennis/article3630730.ece

If anyone wants to know more I can PM them but we can't publish more than a short extract for copyright reasons.

The visit of a small group of tennis writers from home is not an opportunity to slow down. Indeed, the work simply intensifies and the little we are asked to sample [(an extended beach run, Bikram yoga and a session on the Versaclimber, a beast of a gym machine favoured by cage fighters]) is as naught compared with his daily routine, marshalled on court by Ivan Lendl and off it by Jez Green, his longtime fitness trainer.

The absolute killer is the speed endurance that involves replicating on-court situations, backed by statistics from his matches — the semi-final of the Australian Open against Djokovic to the fore — where he will run for 24 seconds, take a 25-second break, run for 40 seconds, and repeat until he “completes” a 6-3 set without actually hitting a ball.

“The average game of that match was seven points, so we do seven points of running with a minute’s break between games,” Murray says. He could barely walk for an hour after yesterday’s routine. And then it is the task of Andy Ireland, his physiotherapist, to put him back together for the next day.

What was the highlight - the Olympics?
Definitely. It was crazy. I've never experienced anything like it and am not sure I will again. It was all at Wimbledon, which is just a few minutes' walk from my house so it was pretty familiar. But the noise every time that Andy [Murray] and I played was incredible. I loved every minute of it and I'm proud of my silver medal. He's a great player and a funny guy to play with. At the time, there was obvious Olympic disappointment as we wanted the gold and we weren't far off but that's tennis.

You're quite the sports fan aren't you? What were your own sporting highlights away from your game?
Obviously Andy Murray winning the US Open was massive. But I loved all the other Olympic and Paralympic stuff, and I loved the way Europe came back to win the Ryder Cup. It was a great year for sport.

Just came across this in my paper copy of the Times:
"All athletes who got gold medals at the London Olympics are expected to receive honours in the New Year. Ben Ainslie...has been recommended for a knighthood. Bradley Wiggins,...Jessica Ennis....and Mo Farah...are tipped for the highest honours."
Not read this in any other source, though.

They predict Andy in 4th place for SPOTY tonight  - though bizarrely in an article yesterday they were implying that Andy was a kind of non-Olympian - since "although he did win an Olympic gold medal, his nomination is mainly for becoming the first Brit since Fred Perry to win a Grand Slam."

Best moment

It has to be Murray's performance in winning the fifth set against Djokovic in the US Open final. I was really worried that he would never win a Grand Slam if he lost that match. I'm not sure how well he would have recovered from losing a two-set lead. But there was a calmness and a sureness about his demeanour that suggested he knew what needed to be done to win the match. He looked calmer than in any similar situation I had seen him in before. I think he played his best tennis at the most important time. It could all have fallen apart for him. The mental scars could have blighted the rest of his career. He was serene in that final set, and wasn't looking for any advice. It was just great, but the building blocks had been coming together after losing the Wimbledon final and winning the Olympics several weeks earlier.

There was a long and interesting article on Lendl in The Times a couple of days ago, from which have come the articles eg from the Mail linked above "Murray needs to get mean"
In the Times it said Andy was practising and played a lob which just went over the baseline, and which prompted Lendl's comment about him needing to get 'meaner' by burying the ball in the corners or directly at his opponent.
Don't know if others agree, but I really don't feel that hitting directly at the opponent works for Andy. You can see a moment's hesitation; not 100% commitment [unsurprisingly]; and often the opponent can read this and can win the point. Also, I don't think that Andy would relish the ball being hit directly at himself, [which is what, I'm sure, the opponent would start doing back] whereas Lendl, from all accounts did.
So, I'm glad he's practising burying it in the corners; also hope he's polishing up his lobbing skills - but I hope it will only be very, very rarely that we see him use the tactic of 'direct hitting.'

Andy Murray’s attempt to become the first British man to hold the world number one ranking. Next season, it will be 40 years since the introduction of the official rankings in men’s tennis, so there will be extra focus on the rankings. Should Murray win a grand slam or two he will be well placed to reach the top of the tennis tree and to be part of those celebrations. Novak Djokovic, meanwhile, will be hoping to end a third successive season at the top of the rankings. Roger Federer, who this year became the first man to spend more than 300 weeks at the top of the rankings, will like his chances of another run as the world number one.

this one from the guardian (http://www.guardian.co.uk/sport/blog/2012/dec/29/laura-robson-andy-murray) is about laura and inspirational andy

Here is a quote

Key to her progress, say those who know her best, has been her relationship with Murray – learning from his experience, borrowing from his key personnel and above all drawing inspiration from his momentous success. Sven Groeneveld, Robson's former coach who remains a mentor and friend to the teenager and her family, has known the Briton since 2005 when he first spotted her at a junior tennis camp in America. He has closely followed her career since and believes that her association with Murray has been critical to the great strides she made this summer.

"What greater source of inspiration or information can you have right next to you?" says Groeneveld of the Scot who, in winning the US Open, became Britain's first male grand slam winner since Fred Perry in 1936. "I think the biggest influence and motivational factor has been the silver medal with Andy.

"The inspiration that Andy and the whole Olympic feeling – I know because I was in touch with her at that time, so I know how much it meant to her – I believe that really sparked something inside her and gave her that extra impulse and drive to really commit to her tennis. That relationship between Laura and Andy has been strong for a long time, they shared some success with each other in the Hopman Cup [when the pair made the final in 2010], they have a special relationship and she couldn't have been more happy for Andy to win the gold medal. She was there, in the box, and you could see she was delighted for Andy.

My first thought is that perhaps it's for the tennis academy that the murrays dream of building... Or to help towards that. Or maybe I am reading way too much into it ;)
