i really like andy's view on men's best DC position, not to strive for entry to 'elite world group', but to maintain their current more realistic level,
Doesn't sound like he's any intention of playing at Braehead then!

I tend to agree with Andy's comments re DC also. Play well in this group and win matches rather than struggle in elite world group. Don't run before you can walk.:)

I totally agree- it's better to get a team building up & improving (with or without Andy) . Hopefully some of the good juniors will develop & help to get the team stronger in depth. Maybe in a couple of years time they might be ready to try for the world group.

Ugh to the descriptions of Fed. :hide:
The best thing about that exho match (apart from Roddick winning it) was Roddick's hilarious imitation of Rafa (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=59qgmchvbL8), in response to some wag in the crowd calling out "Come on Rafa!" He played the whole point in the style of Rafa, and won the point! To which he said "So thats what I needed to do all this time". :rolling:

Nice article by Neil Harman in The Times today - says Andy walking around with a "sense of purpose that is almost hypnotic. He knows it is time to put a few players under the spell."
Andy says " a lot of times when you're not that confident the days before a tournament, you're a bit like, aah, i need to hit more serves or i need to do more of this. this week, the last few weeks, i haven't felt like that at all. all the work has been done. Ive made important changes. I've spoken to some people who have obviously helped and to Ivan a lot , too. He's made a big difference with that side of things."

Thanks Pat. Interesting that Andy said it almost felt like playing on clay - J said a couple of times when we were watching it this morning that it seemed like watching a clay court match. Maybe that's why the Spaniards are doing well here so far - Gasquet lost to Ramos. Although it shouldn't really have made much difference to Andy as he played very well on clay last year. So it must be, as others said, the change in the surface from the fast court at Dubai that caused the problem. He definitely shouldn't play Dubai in future!

He doesn't come out of this very well, does he? Disgraceful comments and a totally graceless reaction from him.
At the very least Llodra should have rung the lady up personally to apologise. He's making things much worse for himself with his latest comments.

Llodra has gone right down in my estimation. There should be no tolerance for this kind of thing.
Disappointed in Llodra - I had him down as one of the good guys.
I read some time ago that Llodra is the ballboys' least favourite player because he is so rude to them. And yet he seems a pleasant, witty person away from the court. Rather like Roddick.

I suppose unpleasant things can be said in the heat of the moment, but there was no excuse for Llodra's behaviour which couldn't be construed as anything other than racism and I had always liked Llodra .
Am not impressed that Llodra did not have the courtesy to apologise. The woman's cheering seemed to be the normal stuff you'd see at a match so for Llodra to respond with what does seem like a racist comment is way out of order! Gone down definitely in my eyes
trouble is we all have short memories, hewitt made a similarly odious comment got the minimal slap on the wrist. only for his adoring public to treat him like it never happened. should be at least a ban no place for such behavior in a global sport

Certainly the odds at the moment seem against Andy playing DC and if he did participate can't really see him playing the doubles, Fleming/Hutchins should get he nod.
I think it would make much more sense for Andy to stay in Florida and put in some clay court training with Lendl. I'm pretty sure that on a good day GB could beat Belgium without Andy.

There is an article in today's Times about Larry Ellison, owner of the IW tournie. When the camera was on him you could see that he loved Federer and Nadal; but he had these supportive words about Andy:
"Andy Murray is such a talent. I know he lost early here but I just absolutely love his game. I'd say his backhand is better than [Novak] Djokovic because he changes pace better. Last year Djokovic learnt how to hook his forehand and Murray is hooking it a little more. The way tennis is, when you have that much talent, it is just a matter of the transmission, getting it on to the court."

sounds like roger hasn't thought of it - so its not up for discussion!!haveyou seen other articles on this , or are you reading between the lines?

I agree, he is but we would all be disappointed if he wasn't positive and upbeat after his Miami defeat - wouldn't we?
Indeed ... he should definately be positive and upbeat because he knows and we know he has the game to do it when he plays his best. The problem has been playing his best for long periods of time, but once he gets in the swing, we have seen him do it, and he is a better player year on year. I believe!!!!

You have to read this about Andy in Tom Tebbutt's latest blog. (http://www.lovemeansnothing.ca/blog/andy-murray-keeping-the-faith) Really interesting.
For example this tidbit: "Murray can do lots of interesting things with the ball and is a gifted shotmaker, but he cannot explode the forehand the way his main rivals do."

As you say, interesting. He's saying what I've been thinking for a little while now. He has all the tennis brain, but he does not have a weapon with which to beat his opponents. I'm perhaps less optimistic of his future these days than I used to be. (I was interviewed for a radio station a few years ago at Wimbly, and said of course Andy will win a slam. Now, I would say I don't know.)
Of course, that doesn't change my support of him. He is still the best British player in my lifetime and I will continue to support him and hope that he does achieve a slam and the no. 1 during the course of his career.

Could you expand a bit? I don't understand really. Why should his chances be diminished when he still has the game to win a slam - and I see that as an understatement! Don't get me wrong - I know you are a good supporter and will always support him. I just don't understand it when people seem to think he can't win one for some reason?

If they would just let him play tennis instead of jumping on his every word and dissecting every little nuance of speech he might be able to relax a bit more. As it is I think he does a marvelous job of staying focused and achieving a good degree of calm under some of the barrage of rubbish that comes his way.

Of course, that doesn't change my support of him. He is still the best British player in my lifetime and I will continue to support him and hope that he does achieve a slam and the no. 1 during the course of his career.Sorry don't agree with you. You only have to watch the match he played against Nadal in Tokyo, when his serve, forehand and backhand were on song, also some of his matches against others top players. At the moment he is working on certain areas with Lendl it takes a little while for this to become fully part of his game. If you think back 2 years ago when Nole was working on his serve and other parts of his game it didn't all come together straight away. Also confidence is a great thing. So I for one believe he will win some G Slams and if all works well on the clay season I can see his first one being the French.
Could you expand a bit? I don't understand really. Why should his chances be diminished when he still has the game to win a slam - and I see that as an understatement! Don't get me wrong - I know you are a good supporter and will always support him. I just don't understand it when people seem to think he can't win one for some reason?
I don't say that he can't - I just say that I don't know whether he will or not. Luck comes into it a lot - Roger was very lucky for two or three years when he really didn't have too much opposition. Andy, on the other hand, has always had two or three 'GOAT' candidates to compete with. Of course I still hope that Andy will manage to win a slam, but even if he doesn't he will still have had a fantastic career.
I did think, though, that in Miami he wasn't attacking enough and seemed to have gone back to counterpunching a lot of the time. That won't get the job done against the best. Although I realise that it is very difficult to change your natural game.
As you say, interesting. He's saying what I've been thinking for a little while now. He has all the tennis brain, but he does not have a weapon with which to beat his opponents. I wouldn't agree that he doesn't have a weapon to beat his opponents - his crosscourt and down the line backhand frequently produce winners. His serve also is a big weapon when it's working. His forehand is improving - he's been putting a lot more pace and depth on it over the last year. Whilst it's unlikely to ever be as good as Federer's forehand, I think he is developing it into a weapon. Combined with good netplay, varying the pace, good serving, and playing near the baseline, I think this would be enough to win a slam.
What Andy definitely needs to improve is his serving consistency. In Dubai against Djokovic he served 71% first serves in - compared with only 55% in their Miami match. When Andy serves poorly then it's very difficult for him to play aggressively. His second serve still is a weakness and opponents can be very aggressive on the return and put Andy on the back foot from the start of the rally. Hopefully he and Lendl will work together on finding a way to improve his serving consistency.

Jon Wertheim's mailbag: (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/tennis/news/20120404/mailbag/index.html)
If Masters events are harder to win than Slams, then why does Andy Murray have 6 Masters titles but no Slams? Didn't Roger Federer tank a lot of Masters events when he was racking up Slams, he tended to treat them more like warm-up events for the Slams.
-- Robert, Hong Kong
• Fair point, but I'd be inclined to go glass-half-full here. Murray's success at TMS events suggests that he will win a major.
I wrote a "long-term" question to my most knowledgeable tennis buddy, "Who will win a major first, Wozniacki or Radwanska?" He went off the board any chose "C" (neither). So I followed up with "Andy Murray or John Isner?" Thoughts?
-- Tim, Glenford, N.Y.
• We all love Isner. And between his serve and his fighting instincts, the notion of him ripping off seven straight matches isn't unreasonable. But, come on. Murray has been to three major finals and has made the semis at all four Slams. He's beaten the Big Three multiple times and on multiple surfaces. That's a different league from Isner, who's made the second week of a major a grand total of once.

Hope top of the list is still 'improved, consistent serve & forehand/ more aggressive-assertive play/up on the baseline/ taking the initiative by coming into the court and shortening points more. (though I was hoping to see more of these in the Miami Final....) Hmm.
Oh well, hope the 'Lendl factor' will translate into a successful clay season. Fingers crossed.

It didn't have that effect on me: I don't think Andy would gel well with somebody who wanted to rule the roost completely - he needs somebody who is open to his own suggestions and will go on from there.

Jon Wertheim's SI mailbag: (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/tennis/news/20120411/mailbag-maria-sharapova/)
Handicapping the percentage chance of the following players winning at least one Grand Slam title in his or her career: Andy Murray: 72 percent; Caroline Wozniacki: 53 percent; Jo-Wilfried Tsonga: 42 percent; Milos Raonic: 38 percent; John Isner: 11 percent. Sound about right?
-- Stephen B., Toronto
• I can't tell if this is based on analytics of any kind or if it's just intuition. I'd say Murray might be a bit high. Same for Wozniacki. (Remember, since she became a top five player, she hasn't even made a Grand Slam final.) Tsonga is probably high, too, though he's precisely the kind of player with the high-octane game to rip off seven straight matches. Raonic is about right, given his young age and how many opportunities await.

Much acclaimed in the evening very successful imitation of Federer (Djokovic does not dare to make more ...) by Tecau. Inevitable also carried out in the locker room scene with Ekerot imitating Stepanek and Andre Sa who was his doubles partner Leander Paes.
Other actors in the evening, one of the most successful in recent years, even Stakhovski, Nieminen, Jamie Murray (now with his brother Andy has seen fit to make some crucial double fault during his match against Bryan twins ... twin brothers against, a mica stuff as usual, although I would have recalled that Andy was not an unusual match, without going back to the times of Doherty, it seems to me that once the two McEnroe brothers pottuo would clash with the Gullikson twins, Tom and Tim, but then I do not think that the fratricidal confrontation ever happened).

Quite good fun that - Andy sounded very relaxed.
I cannot remember all of it so hopefully it'll be available as a podcast somewhere for everyone.
However, what made me chuckle a lot was after Andy's interview when the studio guys were talking about his 'dress style' or lack of it (he was in training kit). One of them came out with " but hang on, this is a sport where the likes of Roger Federer turn out wearing gold lame jackets; Andy's look is way classier than that".

After the Final, in the studio discussion, it was interesting to hear Boris Becker's views on Lendl and on what he can bring to help Andy.

Interestingly divergent views in that discussion - Becker thinks he has to be more aggressive, Resedski thinks its all in the serve and Fleming thinks its all in the mind. Who's right then? Maybe all three. Ms Croft, of course, at her anti-Andy best with her ipsi dixit of the moment, 'Do you think the honeymoon period with Lendl is over then?' They have been working together for 4 months, Annabel - give it a rest!

Fina, I have looked everywhere & can not find anything & like you I was hoping Cazza had better luck!!!:)..........unless Andy has decided not to do any..
The only post match comments I've been able to find from Andy are in this article: http://www.bangkokpost.com/lite/news...y-in-barcelona. It seems Andy must have given an interview - extract as follows:
"It was important to play a few games on clay, I had some good tennis from time to time," said Murray. "It's most important to get ready for the upcoming Masters 1000s (Madrid from May 7 and Rome to follow).
Murray, a Monte Carlo quarter-finalist who admitted that he's had a difficult time trying to make the change from hardcourt to clay, praised Raonic's big game.
"Milos has always played well on hardcourt - now he's a threat on all surfaces. "He's got a huge serve, you must find ways to neutralise it. If you manage, you have options."

Superb 2-page article in LIVE magazine supplement of The Mail on Sunday. (sorry, not sure if there is a link and not sure how to do it anyway) David Frost interviewing Andy and describing him with terms 'friendly' 'approachable' 'engaging' 'humurous and thoughtful'
Nothing new about Andy that we didn't know but he comes across so well - and there are great pictures which quite brightened my morning and my breakfast.
