More AM-related letters (see above):
Since I know you love these Hall of Fame questions ... Is Murray a lock now that he won the U.S. Open (let's say he doesn't win another and never reaches No. 1)?
-- Gene, Metuchen, N.J.
• Given the "One Slam and a bit more" precedent, how could you deny Murray? One Slam title and four other finals. Semis or better at all four. Olympic gold. A bunch of Masters titles. Good record against the other Big Four members. It sounds silly: By winning the U.S. Open he guaranteed himself Hall of Fame enshrinement. But, again, given the current requirements, how could he be denied?
How about that men's final for "greatest match ever"? Truly inhuman shotmaking and defense, 50-plus-shot rallies AND balls being blown hither and yon in the wind. And enough momentum swings to render even the hardiest Scots comatose toward the end.
-- Rick, Albuquerque
• Too many lopsided sets. Too many errors. Too many lapses. Insufficient fifth-set drama. Don't get me wrong: I enjoyed the match immensely. But even for the "Men's Grand Slam Final of the Year" award, I pick Australia over the U.S. Open.
I always wonder how many of the letters in Jon Wertheim's mailbag should actually have the name J. Wertheim, New York, N.Y. below them

With Andy Murray winning the US Open and you doing well, there seems to be a general good feeling around British tennis. Do the players feel that too?
I think we all feel it. The support that all of us have had on Twitter and Facebook and stuff like that over the summer has been incredible. I’m definitely having more people come to my matches – whether that’s because I am playing Chinese people over here, I don’t know – but a lot of people seemed to be supporting me and there were a lot of “Come on Laura”s today. It’s really exciting and I think Andy kick-started the whole thing at the Olympics, for sure.
....
Did you watch Andy’s final?
Oh yeah. I stayed up way past my bedtime to watch it and I was super-tired for practice next day. I watched the whole thing – I couldn’t stop watching it, it was so good. I was getting so pumped up in front of my TV. I didn’t cry but I was just incredibly happy for him.
Perhaps it was playing mixed doubles with you at the Olympics that did the trick?
Er, I don’t think so (laughing). But yeah, he’s been playing incredibly well and it was only a matter of time before he won one. We’re all really happy for him

The Times Online (http://www.thetimes.co.uk/tto/sport/tennis/article3549516.ece) - realities of the tennis slog on the Futures circuit without any funding.
Good piece by Neil Harman but disturbing nonetheless because of what happened.
You have to pay to read it - £2.40 p/week (for the Times and Sunday Times online).
Here's a short extract - we can't post the full article because it would breach copyright.
A couple of thousand miles south in Binh Duong, Vietnam, in a $10,000 ATP Futures event things were a lot more disturbing. Andrew Fitzpatrick, the British No 12 and No 456 in the world was experiencing one of the most traumatic weeks of his life. Not only had Fitzpatrick been robbed a couple of days ago of the £1,000 he had saved for three months for a five-tournament expedition to some of the least enticing places in the world but after his doubles match on Monday, he said that he was the victim of an attempted sexual assault in the single shower in the tournament locker room.
The Times (http://www.thetimes.co.uk/tto/sport/tennis/article3548894.ece) (Sam Munnery) also did a good write-up of Hev's (http://www.thetimes.co.uk/tto/multimedia/archive/00339/113710634__339609c.jpg)match against Shreiky.
Heather Watson gave Maria Sharapova a fright today after taking the world No 2 to three sets before eventually bowing out in the second round of the Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo.
The British 20-year-old, buoyed by her victory yesterday against Sabine Lisicki, the Wimbledon semi-finalist, won the first set on a tie break but Sharapova rallied to win 6-7, 6-3, 6-4 in a match that lasted more than three hours.

 Another crappy letter in the SI mailbag this week: (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/tennis/news/20120926/mailbag-caroline-wozniacki/index.html)
What a crock with this statement in your 50 U.S. Open thoughts: "As a bonus, [Andy] Murray wins de facto Player of the Year honors, having won both a Grand Slam title and Olympic gold." The Olympics are NOWHERE on par with a major. It's a five-match tournament with four of the matches being best-of-three sets. If anything, it's on par with a 1000-level event which Murray has won before. Big deal. Murray is No. 3 and where he belongs. What a stupid statement.
-- Ida Anna, Texas
• Bonus: Anyone whose name comes within a few letters of being a palindrome get their question published. Even when aforementioned letter is filled with a disproportionate quotient of bile.
A few of you made this point but I stick by my guns here. Murray reaches the Wimbledon final, wins a gold medal in front of a passionate home crowd at the All England Club, wins the U.S. Open, and makes the quarters and semis in Paris and Melbourne, respectively? That does it for me.
As for the Olympics, the points allotment is misleading. In order to appease the tours and protect players who missed the draw cutoff only because their countries are stacked with fine players or absent players (remember our discussion of Feliciano Lopez of Spain and Cara Black of Zimbabwe), the Olympics can't offer beaucoup points. But every other metric -- quality of draw, prestige, player motivation, sponsor bonus -- puts this as a fifth major.

It certainly is - Andy is so so much more relaxed in interviews these days.
I do so admire his loyalty to his team - whenever anyone mentions the influence that Ivan Lendl has had - which we all admit seems to have been the key trigger - he will always mention that the others have been around and working with him for 4 or 5 years and have all made their contribution. No wonder 'Team Murray' all get along so well

There's a few people I wouldn't mind kicking ! Having said that, any extra pressure on Andy's season is probably not a good thing - shame for Jamie, Colin etc though
A real shame for all the English players too.
Its quie possible that Andy may not have been able to play as often the timing of the Commonwealth Games clashes with tennis tournaments and finishes immediately before the Canada Masters.

The Times Online (£'s sign up needed) has a lot of interesting articles today - not all of which have made it into the hardcopy paper edition.
Neil Harman @NeilHarmanTimes (https://twitter.com/NeilHarmanTimes) We are all golf loopy today with good reason but there is a tennis decision looming that can have major consequences http://thetim.es/NZ4Vxl (http://t.co/C772pROs)
Grand Slams or new alternatives?
extract here - difficult to give details properly
Throughout 2012, the grand-slam tournaments have slanted their increases in player rewards from the bottom up rather than the top down, underscoring a recognition that the load should be spread more equably.
There is a growing feeling that if the Australian Open does not come up with a significant increase, there will be a show of hands to see if any of the players are prepared to bypass Melbourne next January.
There is increasingly strident talk about tournaments for which there could be enormous prize money and significant ranking points on offer being set up in direct conflict with the grand-slam events. There is a threat that players might choose to compete in these instead, but very few have an appetite for rebellion just yet.
Europe should introduce "Poult's Clause": http://www.thetimes.co.uk/tto/sport/golf/article3554647.ece
“We have actually revised the qualification for next time,” Lee Westwood joked. “It’s nine [qualifying] spots, two picks and Poults. It’s the Poults clause.”

Sport's greatest comebacks: http://www.thetimes.co.uk/tto/sport/article3554642.ece
They list these:
Ryder Cup, Medinah, 2012
The Open, 2012

Champions League final, 2005
Liverpool v AC Milan on penalties
Ryder Cup, Brookline, 1999
The USA comeback ...
US Masters, Augusta, 1996
Nick Faldo beating Greg Norman
Embassy World Snooker Championship, The Crucible, 1985
Dennis Taylor came back from 8-0 down to beat Steve Davis
French Open, Ivan Lendl v John McEnroe, 1984
With McEnroe having won the first two sets 6-3, 6-2, it seemed like he would go on to to win his first title at Roland Garros. But Lendl had other ideas, claiming the third set 6-4 before going on to win the last two 7-5, 7-5 to complete a remarkable five-sets victory.

At the US Open and Olympics we have seen that Murray, with his added mental and technical armoury, has the perfect game to beat Djokovic, who does not like a counter-puncher. Djokovic prefers quick exchanges, perversely suiting his game better to Federer.
The Australian Open will be a good test of how Djokovic is able to adapt to this threat, and I'm not sure that he has the weapons to deal with the new, attacking Murray.

The monkey, no, elephant, is off Andy Murray's back, and the Scot deserved to win his first Grand Slam title in New York. He toughed out several matches en route to the final, then outlasted Novak Djokovic. Now that he has one, you'd suspect more majors will follow. Bravo, Andy.

Alex Ferguson has written a short article on Andy's US Open win in the latest issue of 'Inside United' magazine:
"It was absolutely magnificent. The excitement and atmosphere inside flushing Meadows was unbelievable. I've been to finals at Wimbledon before and it's different there because there's a real hush around the place. You can forget that in New York! Everyone is shouting and screaming - it's a very different type of atmosphere, but fantastic.
I was really impressed with the way Andy dug in [against Novak Djokovic]. After winning the first two sets, he obviously lost the next two and the fifth set was going to decide him as a champion or give him a tough fight to come back from. He proved himself to be a champion - he was absolutely brilliant.
I really think this is the start of more Grand slam victories to come. You have to remember that he's part of a generation of great, great players, probably the best ever in terms of a collective four with Federer, Nadal and Djokovic, and Murray. It's a really exciting time for tennis."

Very interesting, a lot of it we have heard before, of course. One thing however was new to me: there have been so many calls over the years that he needed to see a sports psychologist - apparently he did, when he was 20. It's not mentioned in the programme how he felt about it but I assume he didn't think much of the experience as he didn't carry on with it.

Madeline, I think he mentions this in his book. It was following his wrist injury. Brad suggested it but thought his problems were more deep-seated.
He mentions he had a couple of sessions with Robert Forzoni who was with the LTA, and who then came over to US Open with him.
So I guess he must have felt the sessions had helped in some way to deal with the mental side of his wrist. But he didn't agree with Brad that he had more deep-seated problems.

In his first interview since winning the US Open, the Scot tells Paul Newman how playing clever tennis rather than his best tennis was the key to ending his wait for a Slam
During his victory here yesterday over Ivo Karlovic, Murray took a medical time-out to have treatment on a sore back. At his post-match press conference he made light of the problem – "It's nothing serious at all and it feels absolutely fine now" – but later confided that on most days he feels stiffness in his back. He had to have eight pain-killing injections before this summer's French Open.
"It started early in the year," Murray said. "I didn't really think too much of it, but it gradually got worse and worse and worse. I went to see a specialist and got it checked out and got the injections and felt better after that. I still had a few problems from time to time, but I adjusted my training a bit to cope with it. I started doing more exercises to strengthen the area and take a bit of pressure off the problem part.
"My back is stiff most days, but once you start to get warmed up the more matches I play it almost feels better. It almost loosens it off a little bit and I get used to the movements."
Asked how his back was affected by long flights like the 10-hour journey he had to make here, Murray said: "That's not good – and walking around or standing for a long time it gets really sore. If I just sit on my butt for a week or so and do nothing then when I start again it's really stiff. It felt quite cold out there this evening. There was quite a breeze and that didn't help."

Murray also revealed that he does not expect to play next year in Dubai or Rotterdam following the Australian Open. He usually plays in one of the tournaments before the Indian Wells Masters in March, but next year he plans to spend that period training again in Miami, although he might enter the nearby Delray Beach event at the end of February.
"After Australia, obviously Indian Wells and Miami are important tournaments," Murray said. "Last year I went over to train in Miami and then I went back to Dubai. I did well in Dubai and then flew back over to Miami. That maybe wasn't perfect for Indian Wells [where Murray lost his first match], so I think I'm probably going to spend more time in Miami and not do so much travelling at the start of the year."

Brilliant. Get "At Last" playing! Been suggesting this for years. If your training home is the US, makes sense to stay there.
Sounds like Andy is going for number 1 and targetting the Masters as well as the Slams and saving energy and refusing the allure of large appearance fees.ANd if he wants match play, the ATP 500 Memphis tournament is "up the road" relatively speaking. Used to be very much Roddick's stomping ground, but now he has retired maybe one Andy can replace the other as the crowd favourite.
Like others, I thought that was a really positive post match interview with Andy. He certainly doesn't appear to be too concerned about the loss so neither should we. The thing that I particularly liked was that Andy had his head up and was looking at the camera - something we don't usually see when he has experienced a defeat. Doing well at the WTF is obviously his goal for this year end and he seems in confident mood - we should be too!

That was a shock to read, well I never!
He is sometimes positive about Andy when talking to British press and the BBC. He knows its what they want to hear.
It was an open press conference though. People looking for any opportunity to have a go at Federer?

Stuart Fraser@stu_fraser
Ah, Roger. On Murray: "I think he's done so well. His reaction was amazing after not winning Wimbledon against me."
The knives are out already - on the front of the Scotland on Sunday this morning is a picture of Andy with the headline 'Murray blows his top and his title'. The strap line below says 'Murray blew a 4-1 lead in the third set and then two match points, triggering a furious tantrum'. Did anyone else see a furious tantrum at the end of the match? I certainly didn't. The article is even worse including phrases like, 'anguish etched across his face'; 'the slouching, hang-dog, wild-eyed screaming and racket abuse were back' and 'the way his game fell apart will worry him'. This from one of Scotland's main Sunday broadsheets - with friends like these who needs enemies?
The Sunday Times, by way of contrast, only mentioned the Murray/Raonic match in passing - their article focused on the final encounter to come between Raonic and Nishikori.
Perhaps I'm just too sensitive to be a Murray supporter!!

With the stunning Shanghai skyline in the background, Janko Tipsarevic, Andy Murray and Zhang Ze went to “Zeal” a bar on The Bund where they were given a demonstration of Jian Zhi which is the ancient Chinese art of paper cutting. They were taught by a Master in paper cutting Zhou Ruo Mei. The end results was this scroll created by Madame Zhou which included parts the three guys had cut out.

You've misquoted him. As did Stuart Fraser.
The cultural element was explained on this board a while ago in a very tactful way by Steven (BOTB). So I'm not going to go into this again. Plus, a cultural tendency is just that - not an absolute rule that is necessarily 100% followed. Even from sentence to sentence.
I'm going to go by the overall tone of the response and say that what he said made complete sense, describing a glittering future for Andy in an articulate and balanced way - and leave it at that.

Andy Murray can lay claim as the most improved player of the year.
If the year 2011 saw Murray reach one final and three semifinals, 2012 saw him reach the quarterfinal at French Open, semifinal at Australian, final at Wimbledon and finally the pinnacle at the U.S. Open (as well as the gold at Olympics).
Murray is well-positioned to lay claim to the throne currently occupied by Roger Federer and with his coach firmly by his side, it would be a surprise if he does not double his tally (of Grand Slam wins) by June 2013.

Andy Murray's birthday surprise for girlfriend Kim Sears: Scotsman.com (http://www.scotsman.com/sport/tennis/relieved-andy-murray-s-birthday-surprise-for-girlfriend-kim-1-2570649)
The US Open champion and Britain’s most successful player since Fred Perry dispensed with the usual fripperies and, instead, dedicated his 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 win over Radek Stepanek at the Shanghai Masters to his other half, Kim Sears. Signing the television camera lens at the end of the match, he wrote a little birthday note to her. That should earn him a few brownie points back home.
There's a good match report + a bit more about the virus he picked up!
At least Murray was feeling a little better than he had earlier in the week, even if did not look like a well man. Still trying to shake off a virus infection, he was gulping down air after long rallies and could not find the spark he needed to ignite his game until deep into the match.
“I just picked the bug up on the flight,” Murray said. “I had a sore throat and swollen glands. Then it kind of went down to my chest and I haven’t been able to get rid of it.”

Are you 100% sure Tomas? 100%? "Doesn't take as long", remember he is 2 years older than Andy. Berdych has an unfortunate nature. :big grin:

SimonandSchuster (http://books.simonandschuster.co.uk/Andy-Murray-Champion/To-Be-Announced/9781471126529) - Andy Murray: Champion - The Full Extraordinary Story
Book by Mark Hodgkinson
Description
When Andy Murray finally overcame Novak Djokovic in a five-set thriller to secure the 2012 US Open, it was a dream fulfilled for the man from Dunblane. After four previous defeats in Grand Slam finals, Murray had finally achieved what no British man had managed since the 1930s. But the story of how he got there was just as compelling as the final itself, with as many twists and turns along the way. Writer Mark Hodgkinson has been covering that story since the start - he was actually the first person to interview Murray for a national newspaper back in 2004, and has worked closely with Judy Murray in the past.
In Andy Murray: Champion, Hodgkinson explains how Murray first emerged as a tennis player of true quality, and how his rivalry with his brother Jamie spurred him on. He looks at the close relationship Murray has with his mother, and the various coaches who haved worked with him to assess their influence on his game. In a hugely competitive era of tennis, with Federer, Nadal and Djokovic all counted to be among the greatest tennis players of all time, Murray has earned the right to be ranked alongside them all - and this book explains how and why he has done so, becoming a true national sporting icon in the process.

Am I the only one urging Heather Watson to shut up about Andy not picking her... ( if it was his choice in the first place) ? She's coming across really bitter, esp by saying she didn't watch any of thier matches, including finals....
She probably didn't imagine that the press would pick up on that single comment and blow it out of proportion. Looks as though, like Andy, she will have to learn how to deal with the media the hard way!
Well I haven't read what she actually said, but I'm sure if she was asked whether she was disappointed, her answer would have been "yes". And if the "rejection" spurred her on, then good for her - I was so pleased when she won the title, it kind of evened things up with Laura's medal in my eyes, and maybe made up for her disappointment. Andy could only choose one of them, and how great that he was spoilt for choice!!

There's a double page 'exclusive' on Serena by Neil Harman in today's Times.
Andy is briefly mentioned:
"...Serena is unmissable at the moment, and there is an increasing warmth and respect for her that you can feel. When you consider that, you think of how Andy Murray has had to strive for a single nation's affection rather than that of hers and a few hundred others. "I love how you used Murray as an example," she says with a giggle. "I love Andy. It sounds weird, but I love his attitude on court. Reminds me a lot of myself. Sometimes he gets so mad. I do the same as him and he is so unexpected. You would not expect him to be so fast and play so well and hard and great. I have loved his game for years. He sees the court, he is underrated in that and he is athletic. He is underrated in all that, but he has it, he's amazing."
Well done Serena - I'm suddenly warming to her!

John McEnroe has further declared “ Nadal, Djokovic and Murray could dominate also after the thirties, even if obviously about this topic there lots of unknown quantities. Federer is likely the best player ever. I think that now he is as strong as he was when he was twenty-five years old, but also 90% stronger of anyone else”
Serena talks a lot of sense. Nice to have such warm words from her about Andy.

I was really surprised when I read this in my Telegraph today as Andy has previously complained about being hassled at inconvenient hours for tests. Although according to the article, the top players are constantly tested but at the Challenger level there is very little testing - and they conjecture that that is where abuse is more likely to happen.

True, he has had a haircut (and, for once, it looks as if he has not done it himself) and he will be entering the fray as a grand slam champion for the first time but not a lot else has changed. Not for Murray the monogrammed blazer and flannels of a Roger Federer or the shorts emblazoned with his nickname, * la Novak Djokovic. And, unlike Rafael Nadal, he will not sport shoes decorated with his name and little images of the grand slam trophies he has won. Adidas did offer, but it is not really Murray’s style.
“I got asked about it but I didn’t really fancy it,” he said, staring down at his all-black trainers accented only by fluorescent yellow shoelaces. “I’ve never really understood why people have names on their shoes but these are the ones I’m wearing for the O2. They’re quite bright.”

Article in USA Today (http://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/tennis/2012/11/04/atp-world-tour-finals-roger-federer/1681357/) about Federer's role on the ATP Player Council. It's notable for this dig at Rafa...
Federer has been called out by his peers, including his arch-rival Rafael Nadal, for perhaps hewing too closely to his cautious Swiss roots and not pushing hard enough for change. But Federer was not shy in pointing out that in his extended absence due to knee problems, 26-year-old Nadal has been largely MIA from the players’ push for a larger share of revenues from the majors.
“Players do look up to Rafa, so it would be nice to see him maybe a bit more engaged,” Federer said.

Champers on ice for Murray
Andy Murray famously drank a lemon soda to celebrate becoming the first British male to win a Grand Slam singles title since 1936 at this year’s US Open. But that hasn’t stopped the ATP’s official champagne sponsor Moët & Chandon presenting the tee-total Murray with a personalised magnum of ‘Murray Mania’ champagne ahead of his final round robin match at the O2. Perhaps Sir Sean or Sir Alex, members of the Murray fan club, might like it.
