Andy Murray career might not be over if he has surgery - Bob Bryan
https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/tennis/46890392

Some quotes

Bryan, a 23-time Grand Slam doubles champion, played alongside brother Mike at the Australian Open on Wednesday, little over five months since undergoing his operation.

He says he feels "zero pain" now, but acknowledges playing singles is "more intense" than doubles and that no-one has ever successfully returned to the game long-term after the operation.

Murray is back home in Britain after a gutsy five-set defeat by Spain's Roberto Bautista Agut and says he will "probably" make a decision next week on whether to go for surgery.
The Scot has spoken about wanting to play at this year's Wimbledon but would miss the championships if he has the operation.
"I think he's going to have the surgery," said Bryan.
"He's been watching me like a hawk, asking me how I'm feeling after matches, after practices, where I'm at.
"He's just trying to gauge how long it would take him, if this procedure is an option."

Bryan has recommended his surgeon Dr Edwin Su, who is based in New York and has successfully performed the procedure on a number of American athletes.

Bryan says Murray has already spoken to the doctor.

"He's the only guy that's got professional athletes back to their profession," Bryan said.

"He's done a baseball guy, an NBA guy, and a hockey player. No tennis player until me has come back yet."

He was never playing those tournaments, he said he was either having the op or resting up til Wimbledon. Really hope he has the op. Turning up to play a match to say goodbye after almost 6 months out is not like competing and he could get wiped off court by someone. No way to say goodbye and not worth another 6 months agony. Andy used to put his hands in a jar of pickled something or other to help prevent blisters. But now some tennis players are drinking pickled juice to help stop cramps. Uggggh.

BBC (https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/tennis/46961611) - Pickle juice: Why athletes are turning to an unusual drink to boost performance

"Pickle juice contains sodium, potassium and vinegar and the obvious conclusion would be that it replaces sodium and salts lost when playing sport in a hot and humid environment like the Australian Open thus prevent cramping," said Dr Ranchordas.
"However, how it really works is that it triggers a reflex in the mouth which sends a signal to stop muscles from cramping. That's why it is drank at the onset of cramp

Mats being very realistic about the possibility of Andy making a comeback.

Wilander believes that ambition may be a step too far for the three-time Grand Slam champion, as he suggests the game has moved on to a new level with young guns like Alexander Zverev, Stefanos Tsitispas and Karen Khachanov ready to move up in 2019.

“Another comeback for Murray after surgery may not be realistic,” Eurosport expert Wilander told Tennis365.com in an exclusive interview.

“I think the game is passing him by a little bit. He’s not going to be able to come out and play the way he did in the past because these young guys are going to hit him off the court. There could be days when he wins a match or two because of the other guys’ unforced errors, but there will be a lot of days when he’ll feel outplayed because the other guys over power him. I know that feeling.

:grrr::angry::angry::facepalm: The press makes me so angry. The photo in question was on Twitter yesterday. It was a beautiful picture of Andy and Judy had captioned it ...' is Andy morphing into Johny Mac...' (or something like that.) The only hint, and it was the tiniest of hints, that one of his daughters may have been beside him was a few strands of blond curly hair. Could have been anybody's hair and maybe it wasn't even hair. For that magazine to claim that Andy is pictured with his daughter is preposterous! How they deduce there is a "sweet similarity" baffles me because there was nothing to compare! It makes me so cross that Judy can't jokingly publish a picture without press jumping on it and making it something it isn't. If I am cross, can't imagine how Judy and Andy must be feeling. Sorry. Rant over.

Wow - they're just tragic, aren't they. Must admit it seemed a bit odd that Andy would release a pic for no reason, when he's obviously decided, quite rightly, that he doesn't want his children in the public domain.

Harsh lesson for Connor Thomson in Glasgow qualifying as Aidan McHugh embarks on new numbers game
https://www.thenational.scot/sport/17442016.harsh-lesson-for-connor-thomson-in-glasgow-qualifying-as-aidan-mchugh-embarks-on-new-numbers-game/

The 18-year-old is signed to Andy Murray’s 77 Sports Management Agency and when he completed a week’s training with the Scot out in Miami in December, everything seemed rosy. Three months later Murray is resting up after a second hip operation - one which will alleviate pain he feels in the joint and either prolong his career or end it for good. “I went out early with Andy and started in Miami at Crandon Park, I was there with him for four or five days then I went to IMG for the British camp,” said McHugh. “Andy was working away as normal back then, he was looking good, moving really well, a high level in the practices and I really enjoyed it. But I think he was just in too much pain. I don’t know how long it takes to recover, before he can start training again. But hopefully he does – it would be great.”

BBC (https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/tennis/47466258) - Andy Murray: Former Wimbledon champion 'pain free' after hip injury

"The rehab is slow but going well," the 31-year-old Briton said.

"I want to continue playing, I said that in Australia. The issue is I don't know whether it's possible."
In an interview with BBC sports editor Dan Roan at Queen's Club, the former world number one added: "The operation went well. I'm feeling good and walking around pain free - which hasn't been the case for pretty much 18 months, two years.

"The reason for having the surgery was to improve all the day-to-day things and my quality of life.
"I wasn't enjoying tennis, I wasn't enjoying going out for walks and doing basic things - it was painful tying my laces. I wanted to get rid of that."

Murray added he was under "no pressure" to resume a career which has also seen him win two Olympic gold medals among 45 singles titles.
"I have to wait and see. I'm not allowed to start doing any high-impact movement for the first four months after the surgery and it is only then when I can see if I can compete at any level," he said.
"Whether that is competing in the top 10 in the world, that is probably unlikely, but could I get to top 50, top 100 level? That may be possible.
"I don't feel any pressure to come back; I don't feel pressure to play. If it allows me to play that's brilliant."

The interview with Andy on the BBC lunchtime news today.

Yes - reading between the lines he is enjoying being pain-free and taking everything one step at a time. My gut feeling is that he will do what he can to play cautiously, but without risking lifelong chronic pain which seems pretty sensible. But so pleased he is pain-free, indeed.

Nick Kyrgios brands Rafael Nadal 'salty' & Novak Djokovic 'cringeworthy' in podcast
https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/tennis/48293200

Kyrgios on Andy Murray:

"I feel like his record against Djokovic is embarrassing, I've told him! I just feel like he's so much better than Novak, I've played them both, and I feel like Andy Murray returns better, he's harder to play against, I feel like his serve's better... I've told him 'you should have won so many more Grand Slams'.

"With Murray, he would have ticked all the boxes, it's just sad, it sucks not seeing him around here, in the locker room he was the best, always having bants and everybody was super friendly with him but he also had an opinion of some people too and he wasn't afraid to say things as well which I liked. He was just a lot of fun and I think the sport lost a good one there."

I hope this is the correct thread for this. I have just listened to a very interesting interview that Jamie Delgado gave to the 2 Barrys Tennis Takeaway podcast. He said Andy is doing very well and feeling good. There are no dates when he plans to play in a tournament, but Jamie is starting work again with Andy today. Yay!! Great news. Jamie also talked about what he has been doing in the meantime and also about his role in the ITF. Worth a listen.

BBC (https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/tennis/48212873) - Cameron Norrie: British number two on French Open, Olympics & Andy Murray

Posting this here and not in Tour Tennis as there is a bit about Andy

The first time he met Murray was at Queen's in 2017 - and he was grateful when the two-time Wimbledon champion made the first move.

"He came up to me and my coach and introduced himself," Norrie said. "I thought it was pretty humble of him to go out of his way and introduce himself, I have a lot of respect for him as a person as well as a tennis player.
"I mean I'm not really going to go, 'Hi, I'm Cameron Norrie, do you know who I am' kind of thing?"

some snippets

Does he value his mental well-being over his world ranking? ‘Yeah. Which again I didn’t realise [how important it is] over the last couple of years, because you’re just living in that moment of trying to bear that pain. And it takes a toll on everybody around you – my team, and obviously my family, have seen me struggling for such a long time. In the last few weeks since I’ve been able to start walking and running and doing those things,
I have realised what is important.’ He wishes he’d had the operation 18 months ago. ‘And now I realise I don’t need tennis. I don’t need tennis to be happy any more. I’m very happy right now.’
....

He is in a reflective mood today. We talk a bit about the dark side of tennis, the sexism that he realised was so prevalent when in 2014 he hired a female coach, Amélie Mauresmo (https://www.telegraph.co.uk/tennis/2019/01/23/tennis-podcast-amelie-mauresmo-effect-noticeable-lucas-pouille/). ‘I was heavily criticised in the locker room,’ he says. ‘Heavily.’

This experience bothers him still, so much so that a couple of hours after I leave the interview, he calls to talk about it a bit more. There are a few things he wants to clarify, and he is anxious that he might have come across as inarticulate or stupid. It is an important topic, he says, and he wants to make sure he does it justice, not least because of his two daughters. ‘All I want is for them to have the same opportunities. That’s all.
I don’t think it’s really too much for someone to expect that.’

Scotland’s Fiona Brown: ‘The team’s transformed. We’re here to compete’
Dunblane-born winger draws inspiration from hometown’s most famous family as her recovery from career-threatening injury culminates in a World Cup debut
https://www.theguardian.com/football/2019/jun/07/scotland-fiona-brown-womens-world-cup

Despite living in Sweden, where she was finally able to turn professional, the winger’s heart remains in her native Dunblane. Accordingly Brown was delighted when one of the town’s most celebrated residents, tennis’s Judy Murray, joined Nicola Sturgeon and Steve Clarke in offering Shelley Kerr’s squad motivational talks.

“My parents know Judy,” she says. “She’s lovely, she does so much charity work in Dunblane and so much for women’s sport in Scotland, and all the UK actually. Judy told us it’s easy to get sidetracked in big competitions where there’s a lot of pressure on but to take in the moment, really enjoy it and do everything you can to give yourself the best chance of performing at the highest level you can.

“I grew up watching Andy and Jamie Murray play tennis and they’re huge inspirations as well as a source of massive local pride. Andy’s a huge role model; he shows how you can have near misses and end up succeeding – and he’s also a massive champion of women’s sport.”

Andy Murray wins Queen’s doubles title in first tournament since hip surgery
https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2019/jun/23/andy-murray-queens-doubles-tennis

Some of the comments below the article

No doubt about his talent, but I was never a fan of Murray in his early years on the tour, with his constant moaning and whinging on the court, not to mention his screeching supporters every time he played the home tournaments. But over the years, listening to his interviews off court I realised what a gentleman and decent person he is and now I couldn't be happier to see him healthy and back to playing tennis again.

Bloody love Andy Murray; it’s great to have him back!

I was there yesterday and it was a fantastic singles and doubles match. After Andy, Feliciano is now my next favourite, he was wonderful to watch and funny to see him berating his coach when things not going well. Reminded me of Andy! Not easy to hear the words from the players afterwards so thanks for this clip.

Firstly, apologies if this is in the wrong thread. Wimbledon have a new podcast series, 'Join the Story'. There are 5 episodes and if you like a bit of nostalgia, well worth a listen. But the best one of all, entitled 'More Than a Tennis Player', is all about Andy. Made me laugh and cry in equal measure as it focussed on his entire career. Of course, we all know Andy's story, but I never tire hearing it and could listen to it again and again...and again. I still cheer when I hear or see replays of his victories and I still well up at the poignant moments, esp Wimbledon 2012. That still wrecks me.
(Subscribe to 'Wimbledon - Join the Story' wherever you get your podcasts.)

BBC (https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/tennis/48930580) - Andy Murray: Three-time Grand Slam champion all but rules out US Open as event for singles return

Murray said it was not his intention to play smaller tournaments during the hard court season in the US, but was also unsure if he would travel Stateside to play doubles.

"Having felt how I felt these last few weeks, I'm positive about the future, so therefore I'm going to train properly to try and give singles a go," he said.

But he refused to put a timeframe on his return to singles, adding he may not be ready in time for the Australian Open in January.
"I know some people might like it to have taken five months or six months, but it's going to take more time than that, unfortunately," he said.
"Whether that's nine months or 12 months or 18 months, I don't know. I'll do my best to make it as soon as I can."
