Posting here as it partially concerns Andy but posting in Raducano thread too.

Times (https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/emma-raducanu-blip-was-to-be-expected-says-andy-murray-bk0zbh7qf) - Emma Raducanu blip was to be expected, says Andy Murray

“What happened in New York was obviously incredible but in tennis and sport, it doesn’t just go in an upwards direction all the time,” Murray, 34, said. “There’s always little bumps and stuff along the way. It’s just a little bump, but I think pretty much everyone was sort of expecting that as well. I don’t think it’s anything unexpected to be honest.

“I don’t know her unbelievably well. I just know from the people that have worked and been around her, they all say the same things. She’s obviously unbelievably bright, well educated and stuff, so you would imagine she would certainly be a lot better equipped to deal with everything that’s going on than most and deal with it in a more mature way than I would have done when I was 18.”

It has been noticeable in recent weeks that Murray has been reluctant to make bold predictions when asked about Raducanu’s full potential. Reading newspaper articles and watching television interviews in the weeks after her US Open triumph has brought him some uncomfortable déjÃ* vu of individuals with tenuous links claiming credit and heaping on further pressure.

“Maybe some of the stuff that went on around her, it seemed like everyone was sort of coming out the woodwork off the back of it, which I guess you maybe expect,” Murray said. “But then obviously the media is wanting comments as well from everybody because it’s such a huge story as well, so maybe that’s understandable.

This is such a great article.
I definitely think he is asked his opinion because he has a strong moral code and is not fearful of calling out what needs to be said!

to be fair, given the reduced stature of, (and interest in) the competition and Andy's current level of fitness, it should be right that Dan & Cam are given the chance to compete instead of Andy. I'd go with Joe, and Jamie or Neal in the doubles.

Ahead of starting his European Open campaign this week, Murray is using his performances against Basilashvili and Norrie as inspiration.
He said: "A few things need to change for me to do that, but I don't see a physical issue for me not to be able to do it.
"And also I believe my tennis is there at a level where, if I get through one of those matches, there'll be a big week soon.
"I beat Basilashvili earlier this year and he's playing in the final of Masters. I practised with Cam Norrie loads of times and handled myself just fine."

I knew it! Not these details per se, but that there would be changes afoot in the Murray camp. He needed a change for the new season. The only time I've seen Andy play the kind of zombie tennis he produced against Koepfer was when trouble in the camp transpired down the line - happened with Dani V and Amelie. Wouldnt be surprised if Andy was emotional in Paris because he'd broken the news to Jamie D. Really hope things work out as Andy wants them to (sorry Emma, adore you but Andy comes first).

Fantastic, isn't it. No idea whether Jamie will stay too. Maybe he will because of prestige of working with Andy plus they are long time friends. But then same could be said of Dani and he didn't want to play second fiddle to anyone - maybe Jamie will feel similarly, that he wants to be a player's main coach. He did have success with Gilles Muller prior to working with Andy so a decent CV. Honestly don't know, just happy Andy's being proactive and making the changes.

After the loss to Tommy Paul, I began to question Andy having a Spanish coach. The "suffering" ethos played a large part in landing Andy with a metal hip.

I'm sure Andy respects everyone he works with, but respect is not the same as admire. I hope Andy finds a coach with serious gravitas, but who is also fun, who he admires the way he admired Lendl. If he does, the belief and then the results will come, because the talent has gone nowhere.

Now, Murray has opened up on his decision to hire the German coach on a trial basis, and made an admission about the rest of his career.

“This decision is an important one for me because obviously I don’t know how much longer I’m going to be playing so I want to make sure the person that’s with me for the last period of my career is the right one,” he said, speaking to reporters in Abu Dhabi ahead of the tournament.

“That’s why I’m going about it this way.”
......
De Witt has previously worked with the likes of Gael Monfils, Gilles Simon and Nikoloz Basilashvili.

He is known for his direct honesty and no-nonsense coaching techniques (https://www.express.co.uk/sport/tennis/1534417/Andy-Murray-new-coach-trial-split-Jamie-Delgado-Jan-De-Witt-tennis-news), and has previously said he knows when to stop players from making a mistake and when to push them to do the right thing, saying he he doesn’t “fear being fired” which allows him to be upfront with his players.

De Witt, who does not opt to use social media platforms like Facebook and WhatsApp, is known for communicating with his player's team daily via email, including his protege's angents, coaches, physios, trainers and even mental coaches in the communications to send the daily, weekly and even yearly plans over to the teams, asking for specific feedback from everyone and updates in return.

“My coaching philosophy is very simple,” he previously told the ATP Tour.

“For the player being in the present moment during the match. That is the only way. Action-oriented thinking. The only thing that works. What is my action that wins me the next point? If you are not thinking on the next action, you are always going end up thinking about the past or the future.

“The only thing that helps is what options do I have to win this present point or what options do I have to keep my opponent from winning this point.”

It was only an exhibition match against his compatriot and friend Dan Evans, but we saw a clear of tactics from Andy Murray in his opening match at the Mubadala World Tennis Championship in Abu Dhabi.

Murray looked sharp and moved well in a 6-3 6-2 victory, with his eagerness to come forward and into the net at every opportunity a clear change of approach from the former world No.1.

Sir Andy Murray turned down a seven-figure sum to play an exhibition match in Saudi Arabia due to the country’s human rights record and will not entertain future offers, his representative has revealed.

Saudi Arabia has thrown huge sums of money at sport in recent years in bids to attract the stars of tennis, golf, boxing and last month hosted its first Formula One Grand Prix.

Critics say this is “sportswashing” to improve the country’s international image, which suffered another blow this week when a damning report from Human Rights Watch cited “near total repression of critical voices”.

Matt Gentry, Murray’s long-time advisor and co-founder of his 77 Sports Management agency, said sums of up to $2 million (£1.5 million) were being offered to top tennis stars to play exhibition games in Saudi Arabia.

ATP (https://www.atptour.com/en/news/murray-basilashvili-australian-open-day-2-preview) - Day 2 Preview: Murray Ready For Rematch, Medvedev Begins Title Pursuit

“It’s a tough, tough draw,” said Murray, currently mentored by Basilashvili’s former coach Jan De Witt. “I would expect another difficult one. He’s a huge hitter of the ball. Hits the ball
very clean from both sides and takes a lot of risks. I need to go out and play another top match to win against him in Melbourne.

“He’s not an easy guy to play against, because he can hit winners from all over the court. Not easy to prepare for that.”

Murray recently sang the praises of another player who has come within a match of the title in Melbourne Park, 2021 finalist Daniil Medvedev, signalling the Russian as just the kind of player who can break up the prolonged dominance of the Big Three of Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic.

“It’s nice to hear these words from somebody like Andy, such a champion,” said the World No. 2, who was outplayed by Djokovic in last year’s AO final, but later avenged the loss in claiming his first Grand Slam title at the US Open.

“It’s been a tough three or four years,” said Murray, who looked as though he might have played his last match at the Australian Open after losing to Roberto Bautista Agut three years ago.
“I’ve put in a lot of work to get back here. I played on this court many times and the atmosphere is incredible and I’ve always had fantastic support.

“This is the one where I thought I’d potentially played my last match three years ago but it’s amazing to be back and winning a five-set battle like that, couldn’t ask for any more.”

“When Andy Murray was at his best, he was emotionally more involved than most players on tour. And he was making the right decision nearly every time,” began Eurosport analyst Wilander.

“He has so many choices in his head before every single shot that he hits. How does he make the right choice? He has to feel it in his heart.

“And today he made some great choices in that fifth set, and less good in the end of the fourth set, but that's the way tennis goes - you have to be able to accept that.

“To see Murray out there emotionally involved again, it makes me believe that he's going to get back to very close to the top of the game - if not the top - because physically he can hit all the shots.

“Emotionally - when he's invested and when he deals with the crowd the way he did today - he's so fun to watch.”

During his engrossing four-hour match with Nikoloz Basilashvili, Murray thought he was being booed by some of the crowd and called them out in his post-match interview by saying: "That's painful stuff, there. Those guys..."

However, he realised afterwards they were shouting "siuuu", which means yes in Spanish. It is part of Cristiano Ronaldo's celebration after scoring a goal for Portugal and Manchester United.

"Initially, I thought it was booing because there were some people booing during my practice yesterday," Murray said.

"But then after a few times it was like, 'No, they're doing that, I think it's like 'siuu' or something that Ronaldo does when he scores.

"And, yeah, it was incredibly irritating," he said, smiling.

“Certainly the Australian Open and Wimbledon are the two Grand Slams where he has had his best success in my eyes, it’s where he will still have a chance to get to the second week,” said Wilander, a three-time Australian Open champion.

“And why not in Melbourne? These hard courts are playing very quick. Murray is best on the fast surfaces, always has been, so yes there’s a good chance he can make the second week of a Grand Slam over the next 12 months.

“He is one of the best problem-solvers I’ve ever seen on a tennis court. It doesn’t matter who he is playing, he’ll play them the right way.

“When Murray is at his best, it’s more about the process and tactically playing correct. He’s good at not getting ahead of himself, and he can mess with your head.

“It doesn’t matter who you are, or what your ranking is, and especially these younger players who don’t have the experience, for them to play Murray is an absolute emotional nightmare.”

Yay, Andy doing a sports column for BBC again

BBC (https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/tennis/60043374) - Andy Murray column: Australian Open return & Cristiano Ronaldo-style celebrations

Beating Basilashvili was a big win for me. A lot of work has gone into getting back to this tournament and to physically compete at the highest level, so beating a guy ranked in the top 25 and winning a match in five sets was very satisfying.

I'm probably never going to move as well as I did as I did when I was 25.

But the more matches I play, staying healthy for a long period of time and not missing lots of training, means I am going to continue to improve my movement. Then, my physicality on the court will get better.

When I've had breaks like I've had and missed two or three months it takes time to build up physicality again.

Because I've had these consistent matches and I've been able to train for long periods in the past seven, eight months, my movement and anticipation is getting better again.

I reached the Sydney final last week, which was brilliant, but I felt like it could have a negative effect against Basilashvili, just because conditions are different here.

In Sydney you are playing on an indoor court and the surface is a little slower than the one here. Playing outdoors with the wind changes things too.

So I felt that was a disadvantage for me because I didn't have much time to get used to the conditions. But now I get a day's rest and the three-and-a-half hours I spent on the court on Tuesday should help me when I play Taro Daniel on Thursday.

Emma Raducanu will next face Danka Kovinic in the second round encounter on Thursday. The Briton stated that she was inspired by Andy Murray’s five set win over Nikoloz Basilashvili in the first round encounter on Tuesday.

“I was, actually [watching his match], because when I was in the third set, I thought Andy was up a set. Then he got pushed to five. But he fought back so hard in the fifth set and took the decider. So when I went to three [sets] I was also thinking Actually, I can fight back and win the decider.” You know, fight like he did. So I was definitely inspired by him,” Raducanu said.

One troll responded with: “Yeah. Pretty much all male tennis players.”

Murray shut it down quickly, though, with a simple, but cutting, response.

He said: “This is not true.” With an added smiley face emoji just for good measure.

The former world number one was also appreciative of Murray’s comments and is clearly a big fan of the British star, too.

She responded: “Anyone put their heart on their sleeve and fight harder than @andy_murray?”

Good. When Andy finds the right coach the results are immediate. I recall the incredible AO 5hr semi against Novak in 2012. Andy narrowly lost (I'll never forget Novak prompting a line judge to an out call at a crucial moment by pointing his finger, knowing Andy had no challenges left). But the headlines were all the same, essentially, Andy may have lost but for the first time he looks like a slam champion in the making. He had been working with Lendl all of 1 month. They reunite, all of 2 weeks later he's got Queen's, Wimbo and can't stop winning. It's like a tap being turned on. I just hope Andy can, once more, find that special chemistry with somebody he admires. Ideally, it's Lendl again.......please, please, please...

Showing too much emotion on the tennis court is seen as a weakness. I’ve always been criticised for that. I’ve broken a few rackets in my career, but I’m more of a shouter. On the court is where that side of me comes out. It’s strange, because I refuse to shout at the children, unless they’re pushing each other down the stairs or about to put their hand in the fire. If they’re doing something naughty, I talk it through rather than shout.

When you get to kid number four, it’s chaos as soon as you leave the room. It’s a lot easier with one kid, but you do become less paranoid. You can’t keep an eye on all of them all the time. I feel on more of an even keel since I’ve had the kids, because they are the most important thing.

Andy Murray speaks to the media on the eve of The Championships

THE MODERATOR: Andy, how does it feel to be back at Wimbledon?

ANDY MURRAY: Yeah, it's brilliant. Yeah, obviously as well after the last few years with didn't happen a couple years ago, then last year obviously kind of different circumstances, staying in the bubble and everything. I don't think it was full capacity last year either.

So, yeah, nice to be back playing Wimbledon as normal.

THE MODERATOR: Questions, please.

Q. You said on Monday that you still weren't able to hit a couple of shots and you still weren't quite sure about your participation in the tournament. How have things gone since then? How are you feeling?

ANDY MURRAY: Yeah, it's gone well. Yeah, I've been able to gradually progress my training this week and got to play a few sets, a lot of points.

Yeah, last few days have been good.

Q. I saw you hit with Dan yesterday on 1. It looked like you were enjoying it, hitting the ball well. Seeing Ivan there, him coming back with you, how much does that reinforce your conviction that there's still good tennis left in you, conceivably even this fortnight?

ANDY MURRAY: Yeah, I mean, I think I showed a couple weeks ago that there was still good tennis left in me. I mean, I beat a guy in the top five in the world, you know, was neck-and-neck with Berrettini, who is one of the best grass court players in the world before the injury. I played well against Kyrgios, as well. The first set was a good level. And I've been doing pretty well in practices. Yeah, I know the tennis is in there; I just need to bring it out during the event now.

Yeah, obviously having Ivan on my team helps. We've had a lot of success in the past. We know each other well. He still believes in me. There's not loads of coaches, you know, people out there that have done over this last period, and he has. That definitely helps me.

Q. I understand you're staying quite close to Wimbledon this time. You have a rented apartment. What was the decision behind that? Who is doing the cooking?

ANDY MURRAY: So I don't know if I'm going to stay there. I have rented an apartment, which my dad is staying in, but there's an extra room. I mean, it's very close to the tournament or the venue. Yeah, I may stay there if I have a late finish or an early match.

We moved houses sort of around Wimbledon time last year. Obviously last year was different because we stayed in the bubble. But I'm a little bit further away now.

With what's been going on with the trains and stuff, traffic has been tricky. I don't want to be in a situation where I'm spending an hour and a half to get here in the car, an hour, hour and a half on the way home. It's just to potentially limit the amount of travel and be a little bit closer.

Q. Does your dad cook?

ANDY MURRAY: Yeah, he's a pretty good cook. Yeah, I mean, I don't know. I'll probably eat most of my meals here or use one of the apps.

Q. I wanted to pick up on Ivan being here with you. You've mentioned in the past in relation to the hip injury that perhaps there were periods in your career where you felt in retrospect you'd overtrained. No blame placed on Ivan, but maybe that coincided with periods you were working with him. Is that something you two have discussed this time around, looking back?

ANDY MURRAY: Yeah, I mean, we spoke not necessarily about any of the training that I did in the past, but more the future. The place in my career that I am just now, he obviously played into his 30s as well. As he got older, reduced the amount of training and stuff he was doing himself. So we spoke about that a little bit, the amount I would be doing moving forwards.

We obviously did quite a long training block in Orlando after Miami. We spent like four or five weeks there, spent a lot of time on court with him. But, yeah, it was obviously less than what we did in the past, which is just common sense.

Communicate through my team, as well, the work that I'm doing off the court to supplement the on-court work, maybe being just a little bit more, I don't know, collaborative on that side of things.

Maybe sometimes in the past I would do my tennis work, then the fitness team would do their fitness work, whereas now there's maybe a little bit more planning and strategy around that, which maybe when you're younger I probably should have done it more, but I didn't have so many issues.

Yeah, things have changed a bit.

Q. What do you make of the challenge facing James? You've played him a couple times before. He's had his own hip problems. I wonder if you ever discussed that with him?

ANDY MURRAY: I haven't discussed the hip issues. I know he had an operation after the Australian Open this year. I don't know exactly what the issues were with his hip or what surgery and stuff he had done.

But, yeah, obviously it takes a bit of time coming back, depending on the severity of the operation, et cetera. I think he was back playing after about three and a half, four months maybe, which if it is what I think it probably is, yeah, that makes sense.

Yeah, look, he's a guy that's had quite a few operations. He's had quite a few injury issues over the years. He's proper, like, hard worker. He got up to, I think his career-high ranking last year, he finished last year extremely well, the second half of the year, then obviously had the surgery.

Obviously wish him well coming back from the surgery. I'm sure we'll have a good match on Monday.

Q. What are your thoughts about the tournament's decision on the Russian and Belarusian players and the tour's response with the ranking points move?

ANDY MURRAY: I mean, I have spoken about this quite a few times. I understand why the decision was taken. I also know quite a few of, on the men's side, Russian players, and Belarusian players pretty well. Friendly with them. I get on well with them.

Yeah, I feel bad for them, as well. I can also understand the frustration on their side.

In terms of the response from the ATP, I didn't really agree with it. I just don't see who it helps. All the players have still showed up to play here, so... I don't see how it puts the ATP in a stronger position moving forwards.

But that's just my opinion.

Q. You mentioned Ivan is one of the kind of few people that have always believed in you, I guess coaches. Have you ever taken it personally or been personally hurt by people who haven't, like, believed in you?

ANDY MURRAY: No, no, not really. It hasn't hurt me. In many ways it's been, like, a motivation. I've also spoken to a number of coaches. From memory up until this period, I think there was maybe like one or two times when I'd spoken to coaches about potentially working with me. It hadn't worked out.

But for the most part, like, when I had had conversations with coaches, the potential of working with someone, it had come off most of the time and worked out, whereas this time round, yeah, got turned down by a lot of coaches (smiling).

So, yeah, that obviously was difficult to deal with because, I don't know, there's obviously good coaches out there. I don't know how many that are, like, top-level coaches that maybe you'd really want to work with if you're trying to win the major events.

So, yeah, that was difficult. That's also why I'm grateful that Ivan has come back to work with me and help me try and achieve what it is I want to achieve.

Q. I wanted to ask you about the scrutiny a British player faces here, how it's evolved over the years. Have you given any advice to Emma Raducanu about that challenge of facing that scrutiny?

ANDY MURRAY: I mean, I haven't given advice to Emma or any of the British players on how to deal with that side of things. No one has asked me to. I'd be more than happy to, but I'm also not going to call up one of the players and just say, Hey, this is how you should deal with it because that's the right way to go.

Everyone is different. Everyone feels things in a different way, will handle it differently. I certainly didn't handle things perfectly during the Wimbledon period, but I can also understand probably the different emotions and stresses that you can feel coming into this tournament. It is great and it is amazing, but there is challenges that come with it. Yeah, it's difficult.

I don't know how much it has changed over the years. I mean, maybe for me right at the beginning of your career, there's not really much expected of you, then quite quickly, the better you do, the higher your ranking is, then a lot is expected of you. There is a lot of pressure.

Then maybe like this year and last year, for me anyway, there's been very little from the outside. Obviously still put pressure on myself to perform well and do well. That's how it's been for me throughout my career.

But certainly in the middle part of it, it was pretty intense.

Q. We've seen in recent weeks with golf the influence of Saudi Arabia, their growing influence in sport. Is it something that's ever discussed by the tennis players, what might happen should they try to get involved in tennis? What would your reaction be if you were offered a sack full of money to play on a different tour?

ANDY MURRAY: They did. They put on an event in Saudi Arabia a few years ago, and I was offered to play there. I know a number of the other guys on the tour were offered to play there. I don't think the player field that went was what they were hoping. Yeah, a lot of the, I would say, top players and bigger names turned it down. And I personally wouldn't go and play there.

Q. If you want to answer this question, you were one of the players in advance of installing the biological blood test in 2013, around this year. Since then a lot has happened, a lot of blood testing has happened. Some in advance notice, some without notice. What I find the problem is that from the ITF statistics only two blood tests in competition in the full year, 2021, were taken. I want to know your opinion in this physical sport if you would like more blood tests during slams or tournaments besides from the biological blood test?

ANDY MURRAY: Yeah, I mean, I think the more testing that's done, the better. And obviously the more I assume random nature of it, the more beneficial it would be.

I know when I was playing at the top of the game in terms of my ranking, I felt like I got tested a lot. I think that last year, the early part of last year, and 2020, there was quite a reduction in the amount of testing that was taking place I think in part because of COVID partly, but certainly I think like the second part of last year and this year, that's not really been the case.

But, yeah, I definitely think the more random nature of testing is beneficial. I think if players are given advanced warning, that's probably not going to work.

So, yeah, I'd be supportive of, yeah, more random testing. The more testing, the better.

THE MODERATOR: Andy, good win today. Tell us a bit about the match.

ANDY MURRAY: Yeah, I mean, he started the match well. Had a few chances in the first set. Didn't get them. Yeah, I think maybe didn't return as well as I would have liked. I was creating opportunities on return. But when I got the chances, wasn't able to take them.

But then as the match went on, my return improved. And with that, the match turned. So did well to turn it round.

Q. The underarm serve, was that preplanned? Spontaneous? What do you say to people that perhaps don't want to see that at elite tennis?

ANDY MURRAY: Well, he changed his return position. That's why I did it. He was standing very close to return. He was struggling a little bit on the first-serve return, so he stepped probably two meters further back. As soon as I saw him step further back, I threw the underarm serve in.

I personally have no issue with players using it. I never have. Certainly more and more players have started returning from further, further behind the baseline now to give themselves an advantage to return.

The underarm serve is a way of saying, If you're going to step back there, then I'm going to possibly throw that in.

Q. The sport is changing, isn't it, adapting?

ANDY MURRAY: Yeah, I mean, but I don't know why people have ever found it potentially disrespectful or... I don't know. I've never understood that. It's a legitimate way of serving.

I would never use an underarm serve if someone was standing on the baseline because I think it's a stupid idea because they're going to track it down and it's easy to get. If they stand four or five meters behind the baseline, then why would you not do that to try to bring them forward if they're not comfortable returning there? Tactically it's a smart play.

No one says it's disrespectful for someone to return from six meters, whatever, five meters behind the baseline to try to get an advantage. So I used it not to be disrespectful to him but to say, If you're going to step further back to return the serve to give yourself more time, then I'm going to exploit that.

Q. Do you enjoy the scheduling, last on on Centre Court? Last year you played the three matches here. They all became night session matches effectively. Today we had the situation where the roof was closed. Do you mind playing in that slot as it potentially extends the length of the match and takes you quite late into the evening?

ANDY MURRAY: There's certain things I like about it and some I don't. Usually it's a really good atmosphere. But then obviously they moved the start time a half an hour later. They also have added the interviews on the court after the matches. The time between matches today was 20 minutes.

Yeah, there's not loads of time. I mean, we probably could have played for more time before they shut the roof. Obviously they don't want to be closing the roof at 4-All or 5-All in a set. They want to try and do it, you know, at the beginning of sets.

Yeah, it's not that. Yeah, it's not that easy, changing conditions like that, and also having breaks like that, potentially key points in matches. I would much rather play outdoors. I prefer playing outdoors when we can.

Yeah, I wish there was a way of finishing the matches outdoors more often because it's tricky stopping for 10, 12 minutes in the middle of a match at important stages. It kills the momentum a little bit. You cool off a little bit, as well.

Again, it's a change in conditions.

Q. Wondering how the ab is? You seem to be serving and moving well. Are you pain-free or are you still having to protect it?

ANDY MURRAY: It felt fine today, to be honest. The last few days when I've been serving was fine. I went to get a scan, an ultrasound scan on it on Saturday after my practice just to see how it was progressing. It was all clear for the first time on the scans, which is really positive.

So, yeah, I wanted that kind of for my own peace of mind to know that the injury has healed. Obviously I still need to take precautions and still do some rehab and protect it when I can.

In the match today it was absolutely fine.

Q. You hit 35 winners, only 14 unforced errors. Is the way you're playing, the way you played in Stuttgart, have you recalibrated your sights for this tournament? Do you think you can make the deepest run since 2016?

ANDY MURRAY: I don't know about that. Certainly I'm in a better place than I was last year when I played here. In terms of like pain, certainly in a better place than I was in 2017 when I played here.

But, yeah, I don't know about having a deep run or not. I've got a pretty tricky match in the next round against Isner. Yeah, I'll need to be on it for that one if I want to get through it.

Q. You sort of on court said you hoped to be back in a couple days' time on the same court. Do you take it for granted that you'll be on Centre Court or do you worry now your ranking has dropped, John Isner with his booming serve, might not be the match Centre Court wants?

ANDY MURRAY: Look, I'll play on any court. I really don't mind. Wherever they decide to play me is fine. I'll deal with that. I feel very lucky and fortunate that I've got to play, I don't know how many times, but a lot of times on Centre Court throughout the years. I love playing on that court. I feel very comfortable on it.

Yeah, if I get the chance in a couple of days, that would be great. But if not, they are all tennis courts, same size at the end of the day. Yeah, I'll go out there and compete as hard as I can regardless of what court I'm on.

Q. You have one of the best records against big servers of all players. I'm wondering what is it like to return Isner's serve? What has helped you with kind of that challenge?

ANDY MURRAY: I mean, I don't know exactly why my record is as it is against those guys. They're obviously very tough players to play against because of the nature of how the matches go. You're not necessarily always in control of them. You can go four or five service return games where you're not getting any opportunities. There's not always lots of rhythm in the match, so it's difficult.

But for whatever reason I've always played well against them. The matchups have been good for me. Yeah, I played well against John in the past. I don't think I've ever played him on grass before, so there will be different challenges.

He's played well here before. He was very close to making the final a few years ago. Yeah, I'll need to play really well and certainly return a bit better than I did tonight if I want to get through that.

Q. Obviously it was disappointing for you not to be able to play Queen's after getting injured in Stuttgart. However, did that mean you got more time to spend with Kim and the kids back home than you normally would ahead of Wimbledon? If so, could that be a positive factor in your progress in lieu of a bit more match practice on court?

ANDY MURRAY: No, not really in terms of like the time spent with them. Maybe a little bit more, but not much. I was training most days, as well. So I probably didn't spend that much time at home.

Look, that's one of the nice things about playing the grass season, is being around your family and your friends. I get to see my mum and my dad, which I don't for large parts of the year.

Yeah, obviously get to see my children, as well, which is not the case for the majority of the season. And my wife (smiling). Yeah, I can't miss her. I'll get in trouble for that.

Yeah, I mean, that's one of the things that I've loved about playing at home. I'm staying some nights in a flat here, but just spending time in your own home, in your own bed, it all helps.

Q. It's good to see your results are getting better this year, especially that you feel less pain than in the last year. When compared to your prime years, due to your body, which parts of your game are maybe not working as well as in your prime or you can't execute as well as you would want to?

ANDY MURRAY: I'm probably not going to give that away in here (smiling).

But, look, there's definitely some things that this year, for example, you can look at the data and statistics yourself and find that. There's some things I've not been doing as well as I would have liked.

But yeah, I mean, in terms of like hitting the ball, my ball striking, my shots haven't changed much. But I did for a number of years play really not much tennis. I think, like, in the 2016 year I played something like 80-odd matches. In the five years after that, I think I played literally the same amount of matches in five years that I did in that one year. You can't replace those matches. It's so important to be in those situations, like key moments, 4-All, 5-All, break points, playing consistently against top players and winning against them. You can't replace that.

I missed a lot of that in the last four or five years. It's only been really this year and the end part of last year where I got consistently, was in good enough shape to compete regularly on the tour.

Now that I've been competing regularly, I got a good training block between Miami and the grass season, my game is starting to feel better and better. Hopefully that continues through this year.

The loss of a well loved pet is always painful. Maggie May had a wonderful - and
long - life with Andy and his family and he and Kim will feel her loss deeply (as will the children and Rusty too); they love their borders. My sympathy to them all. xx

I changed the way I was returning a little bit and when I did that I was able to create a few more opportunities and frustrate him a little bit.”

The Scot was pushed from side to side against the big-hitting qualifier for large periods of the clash. However, he hung in and cut down on errors in the crucial moments to earn his 26th tour-level win of the season. It is the most match wins Murray has had in a season since 2016 when he recorded 78.
