1. I would like to see … Andy Murray-Novak Djokovic play anywhere, anytime .
I don’t know about you, but I dig good rivalries. And who better to represent this than the top two players in the world? The tennis community was visibly aghast when Nadal and Federer fell early at Wimbledon. But in retrospect, it was a strong reminder that if any players deserve purple velvet on their changeover chairs, and some robes, crowns and jewels for their postmatch attire, it’s Murray and Djokovic. And the cool thing about the Murray-Djokovic rivalry … is that it is a rivalry, unlike, ahem, the other two players mentioned in this graf. Nonetheless, make sure your DVR has enough storage when they play. It’s riveting stuff every time they clash.

I thought Andy had already committed to playing in Brisbane again?
Probably just wishful thinking by someone.
I don't think it would be a good idea for Andy to play in India as he will not be as well acclimatised to Australia time zone for the Oz Open.

I don't think it would be a good idea for Andy to play in India as he will not be as well acclimatised to Australia time zone for the Oz Open.If Andy plays 3 exhibition matches in India then it would make sense for him to play in Chennai before flying to Australia. So this could be the reason that Chennai is being mentioned.

I thought Andy had already committed to playing in Brisbane again?
I thought I'd heard him say (can't remember when) that he'd be returning to defend his title.
However, he's not on any early commitment list and the Brizzy website only mentions Federer as 'confirmed'.
If Andy plays 3 exhibition matches in India then it would make sense for him to play in Chennai before flying to Australia. So this could be the reason that Chennai is being mentioned.
It might also be that Bhupathi, who has teamed up with Andy's management to form XIX Globosport, is exercising some influence on this since he's setting up the proposed Indian Premier Tennis League. It's intended to be like 20/20 cricket with time limits on matches rather than be exhibition style.
However, it isn't scheduled to start until December 2014 according to this article (http://sports.ndtv.com/tennis/news/208335-indian-premier-tennis-league-is-player-tv-and-spectator-friendly-bhupathi) so for 2013, at least, I'd have thought Andy would be better heading to Brisbane rather than Chennai.

gulbis has a good conceit of himself, is he the real psuedoFed? "I didn't blink when serving out for thematch but I didn't play my best tennis. I am excited because I have been ranked 150 coming into this year. I have been struggling and been up and down and I'm going slowly and surely getting back to where I belong. With one or two big wins, you're there in the top 10."

Why did Andy allow himself to be defeated by the 'real PseudoFed'? Sounds as if Gulbis has had lessons in egotism from PF. Hope Milos demolishes him.:grrr:

Fair comment from the Telegraph I thought - have we heard Andy's presser yet ?

If anyone missed the Montreal final, or the matches leading up to it, this is really an excellent report. http://www.tennischannel.com/news/NewsDetails.aspx?newsid=12866
I do, however, have one issue with the writer. He says, when talking about the point where Raonic touched the net in his match against DelPo:
How many players would have given away a point at such a crucial juncture in a match? The answer is simple: very few.
I am quite sure than any of the top 5 players would have immediately put up their hands and alerted the umpire to the fact.

Telegraph (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/tennis/andymurray/10262898/How-Wimbledon-champion-Andy-Murray-developed-into-a-star-at-The-Sanchez-Casal-Academy.html) - How Wimbledon champion Andy Murray developed into a star at The Sánchez-Casal Academy
As Antonio Hernández, director of the academy from its inception, explains: “When he arrived, Andy tended to be very aggressive on court. So one of the key lessons was to make him understand when he could attack.” It was a trick that his tutors executed by virtue of the signature Sánchez-Casal ‘cube’ system. The method had been patented by Pato Álvarez, the Colombian guru who was Spain’s national coach for 16 years and delineated the court in terms of three component cubes of defence, transition and attack. Immediately, the improvements in Murray’s patience and movement were manifest. “To be effective on clay you need stamina, to build up the points over a longer period,” Ortega says.
...
It is telling that Ortega believes that Murray, should he direct his energies correctly, has the capacity not just to prevail again at Flushing Meadows but to end the Nadal supremacy at the French Open.
“Look at the mix of pace he uses. He can hit winners from everywhere, and his endurance has improved to the point where he could take on Nadal for four or five hours on this surface.”
...
The danger for one so innately gifted was egotism. Where Vallverdu toiled, never even breaking into the world’s top 700, and while Mier struggled to deliver on his youthful promise, Murray was already embarking upon the Challenger circuit aged 16. Álvarez, for one, called him “the finest player I have ever worked with, even better than Nadal”.
...
Naturally Hernández watched rapt as Murray purged 77 years of national torment on that sun-drenched Wimbledon afternoon, but it was not just the inspired play of his protégé that he was admiring as the impeccable demeanour. He is clearly touched, for example, when informed of the 26-year-old’s decision to donate £73,000 in Queen’s prize money to the Royal Marsden Cancer Charity. “I am very proud that Andy has fulfilled his tennis dreams in winning Wimbledon, but what makes me feel better and even prouder is seeing him as a complete person” he said.
“He mentioned after winning Wimbledon that he hoped it would not change him too much. That kind of comment makes me very happy. I know, you see, that the best of Andy is still to come.”

sample 'For Murray, tennis is a trial, a job as much as a sport, and those watching empathise with his struggle, as if locked in a life-long contract of furrowed brows and muttering against the gods. There is considerably less angst now than there was before Ivan Lendl arrived to form one of sport's most successful and unusual partnerships, a meeting of taciturn spirits.'

If Llodra the tennis player was a bottle of wine, what did he think he would be? “I would be a wine from the Rhone Valley, something like a Cote-Rotie,” he said with a smile. “Some years it’s good and some years it’s bad!”
And what would Murray be? “Probably a sweet wine - a Sauternes, like a Chateau d’Yquem. Because when you watch him you have to have a big weapon. But when you’re on the court against him you can feel that it’s impossible to move him or to win the point. It’s not easy. When you watch him on TV you can see that he doesn’t have a really big weapon, but when you’re on the court you can feel something strong from him.”

Great to hear you are getting behind Andy too! We’re afraid there was some slight misreporting of the story – the ‘face of Murray’ in the mint was actually a spoof but some of our original and iconic mints are on their way to you now.

An interview with: ANDY MURRAY
Wednesday, August 28, 2013
Q. Presumably that was just the match you were expecting from him, his tactics, et cetera. Made it an interesting hour and a half.
ANDY MURRAY: Yeah, I mean, it was a good match. The rallies were, you know, quick, sharp. Wasn't much time between points. He was playing quickly on his serves in between points. It was a fairly, I thought, high standard match. Lots of reactions and dropshots, and definitely tested my movement today. I thought I moved well. I didn't make too many errors. It was a solid match.
Q. Your tweets the last couple of days suggest you weren't thrilled with the scheduling.
ANDY MURRAY: No, I think playing at that time for your first round is not ideal. That's it. I mean, not going into any more detail than that. It's just not ideal.
Q. Why do you think they putt you on at night versus Del Potro or someone like that?
ANDY MURRAY: It's not whether it's me, it's anyone. Just because I won last year, it's nothing to do with that. It's just more, you know, for the guys that have to play this evening, and you have guys that have two days off between matches. You know, when the weather was like it was going to be, we were told on Saturday, Would you like to play on Tuesday or Wednesday? We said, Tuesday. They then told us the next day, It's looking like it's going to be Wednesday. Okay, cool. It will be during the day on Wednesday. Yesterday as we were leaving at 3:00 we were told it's looking like you're going to be playing in the evening. Then we had to come back last night to practice under the lights, and it just changes your preparation for the match. But there were a few guys that were in that situation today.
Q. Normally the night session on this day is a second round match. Were you surprised that wasn't the case again?
ANDY MURRAY: Well, no, because the Rafa/Pospisil/Dutra Silva match was the issue. It was meant to play in the evening, and when they got rained off the night before they couldn't put them on three days in a row, so I got to play a night match. I like playing at night. I like it. I just don't think for the first round it's ideal.
Q. Do you think it has a long term effect? Both of the Grand Slams you won you played on the first Monday. Does that tell us anything?
ANDY MURRAY: I don't know. I don't know. I mean, I don't know how many guys have played their first match at 9:00 on a Wednesday. I don't know how often that's happened, so I wouldn't know what the stats or the odds on that are.
Q. As the day was going on, was there a concern about playing Thursday?
ANDY MURRAY: No. I thought we were going to get on this evening. I just thought maybe we would have been on another court. Yeah, you just want to get the match finished. You want to get on the court and play. You know, when the weather's like that, it's distressing for everyone, for the referees, the organizers, for the players. You just want to get on the court and play. Whether it's on Arthur Ashe or Court 15, it doesn't really matter. You just want to play your match.
Q. Low unforced errors count.
ANDY MURRAY: Yeah, it was a very good start for me. I wanted to try and start the match well. You know, obviously he didn't play the best first game to give me the break. And then, you know, middle of the second set I had to hang in because he was playing well. I had chances. He was up a break. Once I got through that, weathered that storm a little bit, I played well end of the second set and was solid for the most part of the third. It was a good match for me.
Q. When was the last time someone served an underarm serve against you?
ANDY MURRAY: I don't remember that on tour. And that was a really good one, as well (smiling).
Q. Is it tough when you've got so long before your loss in Cincinnati and your first match here?
ANDY MURRAY: No.
Q. Just to fill the time without a competitive match.
ANDY MURRAY: No, I mean, look, one day makes very little difference really in terms of how you're going to be striking the ball. That's not going to change a whole lot. And there was a lot of guys that lost earlier in Cincinnati than me that would have had to wait even longer. You know, it was good to get here early and get used to conditions. The balls here are completely different to what we were using in Cincinnati. Obviously, different court, different conditions. Playing on that big stadium, it's very, very different, as well. In a lot of ways it's good to get here early and get used to the conditions before playing.
Q. What was it like being announced as a Grand Slam champion?
ANDY MURRAY: Yeah, it was nice. I mean, it was more kind of going back onto that court again for me was the nicest part about it because, you know, obviously I have great memories here from last year. And I said on the court after the match, I didn't necessarily feel like I had much time to enjoy last year because I was so relieved. I was also a little bit in disbelief, as well. To actually be out there and play a night match in front of a big crowd was really nice. I performed well. It was good.
Q. Any sense of relief to actually start a defense so well? You don't want to conk out in the first game, do you?
ANDY MURRAY: No, but I didn't feel that nervous tonight. I felt comfortable before the match. I didn't feel any extra pressure, which was good. I was just ready to play. I was eager to get on the court and play my match. Last few days in practice, I've been practicing well, hitting the ball well. Like I said, I just wanted to get going. There were no sort of unknowns out there on the court. I've played many matches there. I played in the evening. I played him a few times. I like playing left handers. I didn't feel loads of nerves before the match. I just wanted to get on.
Q. You have Mayer next. Any preference of what time of day you play?
ANDY MURRAY: No, I don't have a preference. I just want to get my matches obviously on at the right times. You know, he's a very talented player. He's got big sort of long, looping strokes. I think he plays his best tennis on the hard courts. Played him once before in Valencia. I think it was three sets indoors. He's a good player. I think he's had quite a few injuries the last couple years and that's why he hasn't sort of got much higher in the rankings. But he's very tough.
Q. Nice to have British company at well at this stage?
ANDY MURRAY: Yeah, it's good. The more British players, the better. Obviously Dan's been playing very, very well this summer. You know, he's got a match that he'll fancy I think with the way he's been playing. The way their games match up, it will be a very interesting match. Laura is obviously coming off the back of a sort of niggling wrist injury. They can be tricky. I've had a few of them when I was younger, as well. Hopefully they can keep winning. Only gets tougher out.

Globally, Novak Djokovic (51%) beats Andy Murray (47%) but in the US, Murray edges out Djokovic with 33% to 26%. The latter could well have been following on from Murray’s US Open triumph last year, with memories notoriously short, seeing as Novak won the title in 2011 and 2012.
The figures show how well-liked players are, if they are seen as good endorsers, are influential and trustworthy and so on. Interestingly, Murray tops the endorsers list among the men in the US, again the result, seemingly, of his win in New York 12 months ago. But globally, he lags well behind Federer, Nadal and even Djokovic.

Q. His level seemed to drop a bit in the second, but then up in the third. Was that how you saw it?
ANDY MURRAY: Yeah. I mean, I think, yeah, that happens over the course of sort of two and a half, three hours. It's very difficult to play at a high level for the whole of that time. He definitely started the match very, very well. Then towards the end of the first set, a few errors started to come. When I got up an early break in the second, I think he started maybe going for too much. Then, yeah, he was still going for big shots at the beginning of the third set, but he started making them for a while. Made it very tough. There were a couple of sets in there. Also beginning of the fourth set I thought was a pretty good level.
Q. You've had a lot of tough matches on that court. Is it kind of difficult not to have that in your mind?
ANDY MURRAY: I mean, it's a court I haven't played my best tennis on, that's for sure. And, yeah, also, I mean, for me I think the conditions, well, it's day and night, isn't it? It's completely different. The ball is bouncing extremely high out there at the beginning, and he's a big hitter of the ball. He served big, too bigger than I thought. Big second serve, too. It took me some time to get used to his game. Yeah, I've had some tough matches there in the past, and today was the same.
Q. Did you feel focus was an issue at all for you?
ANDY MURRAY: Focus?
Q. You seemed frustrated at some points.
ANDY MURRAY: Yeah, I was. I was a bit frustrated at points in the match because, you know, I was doing quite a lot of the running for a lot of it. I wasn't getting much depth on my returns, so when he was serving, you know, I was having to do a lot of running. When I was serving, I served a low percentage today. I served pretty well in my first match, and then today struggled to control the first serve. So I was, you know, playing a lot of points on my second serve. When that happens, you have to do a lot of the running. You don't feel like you're dictating the match. It can be frustrating.
Q. We're doing a story about the evolution of racquets. How was it for you since you started to play to nowadays, and how does it help you in your game?
ANDY MURRAY: I've been playing with the same racquet for 11 years now. I've been playing with the same strings since I won the juniors here, which was in 2004, I think. So about nine years or so. I mean, the racquets have obviously changed. I've hit balls with wooden racquets before, but that's a completely different game. But I think in the last 10 to 15 years, I personally don't see a huge change in the racquets. But from 25, 30 years ago, I mean, I've watched matches. I saw the racquet that my coach used to play with. It was a very small head, so it's difficult to generate a lot of topspin. You have to kind of hit through the ball a lot more. I mean, it's definitely changed, but not so much in the last 10, 15 years, I don't think.
Q. You're the only one of the top seeds so far to play out on Armstrong. Were you hoping you'd seen the back of that court now that you're defending champion?
ANDY MURRAY: No, I'm happy to play on any court. Doesn't really make a huge, huge difference. I mean, we got a great crowd out there. It was a really good atmosphere from pretty much the first point through to the last. You know, whether or not I played well on that court, it's always a really good atmosphere. It's normally packed. Same again today. But that doesn't matter which court you play on.
Q. Don't you mind all the movement and everything that's going on all the time? Doesn't seem the best stewarded of courts?
ANDY MURRAY: Look, at this tournament on all of the big courts it's very different to Wimbledon, for example. It's something that you need to enjoy about the tournament. It's quite loud. There's always noise during the points. There's a constant kind of murmur you hear; whereas at Wimbledon it's pretty much silence. It's a different atmosphere, and one that I enjoy when I came here the first time as a kid playing the juniors. Now, yeah, I mean, you just have to get used to it each time you come back. All of the slams are very, very different atmospheres.
Q. You said ahead of the tournament it was your first time coming back as a defending Grand Slam champion, and with that of course being in New York, there were a lot of ancillary things you had to do; those things could be a bit of a distraction. Is that largely behind you now?
ANDY MURRAY: Yeah, I think, I mean, after Saturday it was fine. Then obviously it was quite a wait to play the first match. You know, I would probably say on Monday or something I was a little bit nervous or kind of anxious to know what it was going to feel like when I went on the court. By the time I got on it Wednesday night, I literally wanted to play. I wasn't thinking about anything else. Maybe in that way it helped me a little bit. But, yeah, I mean, I'm in the tournament now. I play every other day. I'll stick to the same routines pretty much now till the end of the tournament. It's normally the week before that can be the time when you get distracted.
Q. How would you assess the way that you're playing right now? Pleased with the way you're playing? Are there things that are of a concern to you?
ANDY MURRAY: I thought the first match was very good. Again, very different conditions today. I didn't feel like I served as well today as I did in the first match. You know, different court, different conditions during the day. Look, I finished the match well today. I played well when I needed to. That's a good sign. Yeah, obviously I want to keep improving as the tournament goes on. You don't want to play your best right at the beginning, so I hope I can get better.
Q. Another Mayer next. Florian is quite a tricky player.
ANDY MURRAY: Yeah, he's very tough. I mean, he comes to net a bit. He has a good slice backhand, but he hits it with two hands, which isn't how remember normally you're taught to play that shot. He has very good feel up at the net. Hits a lot of dropshots. He's a pretty flat ball striker. He has sort of huge, looping strokes. It can be tough to time your split step and know when he's going to make contact with the ball. Yeah, I mean, he's caused a lot of guys problems over his career. I'll need to play well to beat him.
Q. Specific challenges to play three such different players back to back?
ANDY MURRAY: No. I mean, I think going from playing a serve volleyer to a guy that plays at the back of the court, that can take a bit of time because the points develop completely differently. But, I mean, against Mayer, a majority of the points will be played from the back of the court. He's a right hander. I don't think now it should be an issue. Normally going from a serve volleyer to a guy that plays from the back, that can take a bit of time.
Q. Have you spoken to Dan about Robredo at all?
ANDY MURRAY: I saw him today. I didn't chat to him about the match. I have spoken to Leon before all of the matches because I know Tomic fairly well and I practiced with Kei and played him quite a few times, too. They've got most things covered between them. If there's anything I can do to help, then I will.
Q. Will you try and watch it?
ANDY MURRAY: When is it on?
Q. Fourth on Armstrong, so tomorrow night.
ANDY MURRAY: Yeah, I mean, if I'm done for the day, I'll definitely watch it. I've been able to watch bits and pieces of his first couple matches. I really want him to do well and I want him to win. But I'm not here for Dan. I'm here to prepare as best as I can for my next match.
Q. A question about football. I know you like it. What do you expect from the match between Scotland and Belgium next week?
ANDY MURRAY: Belgium is a very good team. A lot of good, young players. I mean, I think they're kind of sort of dark horses for the World Cup. I think they're very, very good. I wouldn't expect Scotland to beat them (smiling).

His victory at Wimbledon might have earned him £1.6m in prize money– not to mention the hearts of a grateful nation – but Andy Murray could soon find himself £500,000 out of pocket after a botched investment in an exclusive Surrey golf course.
The Beaverbrook Golf Club would have been the 141st course in the county, where Murray lives with his girlfriend, Kim Sears, but 10 days ago a High Court judge quashed the planning permission granted to developers Longshot Ltd.
The firm must now restore the course site to its original condition, unless it lodges a successful appeal. The cost, thought to be hundreds of thousands, will be added to legal costs and loss of income if the course is not built.

Q. After you came out in the second set, the match really seemed to change.
ANDY MURRAY: It was very tricky -- well, it was tough conditions, not tricky. It was very, very humid. Yeah, with the way that he plays, it was a tough match, especially the beginning. But, yeah, started the second set well. Started hitting the ball a little bit cleaner, was more aggressive after that, and finished it well.
Q. Some suggested you were having trouble breathing with the humidity.
ANDY MURRAY: I was struggling breathing for most of the match. I just went to the toilet. It was quite a long set. When it's that humid, you tend to try and take on as much fluid as you can.
Q. When the weather is as iffy as it looks out there, do you find yourself checking the sky during a match? Could you also talk about the implications of having a roof put over Ashe?
ANDY MURRAY: When you say 'looking iffy'?
Q. Rain in the forecast.
ANDY MURRAY: Well, not today really. I wasn't thinking about that today. But, yeah, I mean sometimes the skies have looked like that for the last five, six hours. Hadn't really changed that much. Sometimes you are conscious of the rain. Sometimes you can feel it coming a little bit with a bit of drizzle. You will think about it. But not today. I think with the roof, I mean, I don't know how much difference it makes to the players. There's 128 players in the draw. It will help 10, 15 players, but it doesn't help everybody. But for the tournament, it's great. It's great for TV. It's great for people that have tickets to come and watch, as well. And it means also that the tournament, you know, most likely will get finished on time, which hasn't been the case I think like three of the last four years, going on to the Monday.
Q. You didn't look very happy in the first set. Was that just the conditions?
ANDY MURRAY: Yeah, it was tough, tough conditions. Not easy to play when it's like that.
Q. You do a lot of training in Florida. You're used to difficult conditions. How did it compare to that?
ANDY MURRAY: I mean, you can get used to something, and then if you aren't in those conditions for five weeks or four weeks it's been four and a half weeks since I've been in Miami that doesn't always just stay with you. Suddenly it's extremely humid and you're playing right in the heat of the day. That takes time to get used to.
Q. Last changeover before you finished it off you hung an ice towel around your back. You acted as if you had been stabbed in the back.
ANDY MURRAY: It wasn't the ice towel. I reached back to grab it and I felt my left forearm a little bit. I basically went down, yeah, to stretch out. It wasn't to do with the ice towel.
Q. Will it be strange to play an opponent who's last name is not Mayer?
ANDY MURRAY: No, I don't think it will be.
Q. What are the odds of that?
ANDY MURRAY: Yeah, I mean, they're probably fairly low. But it's probably happened quite a few times, I would have thought.
Q. You tweeted about Dan's match. You managed to watch a bit of it. He talked afterwards about feeling like he was earning your respect because he changed his attitude. Is that something that you've definitely seen, that he's sort of grown up?
ANDY MURRAY: Well, I always liked him. I mean, he's a fun guy to be around. He's funny. But, yeah, it can be just frustrating sometimes when someone has that much ability. You really just want to see them play the way that they can. You know, you don't want really guys to sort of finish their careers regretting, you know, not putting in 110%. He could make a really good living for himself playing tennis. He could have some big wins. Five, six weeks ago, you know, if someone had said Dan Evans is playing Tommy Robredo on Armstrong, who is going to win? You would absolutely say, There's absolutely no chance. That's three straight sets for Robredo. He's turned it around. From what I've heard, he's been working extremely hard -- from the coaches and fitness trainers that have been around him. He's on a bit of a roll right now. He played well yesterday. I watched almost every point yesterday in the evening. He very nearly won that match. He almost turned it around. The big problem was the second set for me, not what happened at the end of the fourth set, because Robredo was struggling physically. If he could have just maybe put in a little bit more effort in the second set, he could have outlasted him.
Q. Bode well for Davis Cup, as well?
ANDY MURRAY: Yeah, I mean, if he plays like that it's good for everyone. For Davis Cup, of course it helps the more guys you have playing well and able to compete with, you know, top 100, top 50, top 20 players. When we have home ties, on the right surface for him, he can compete with most guys in the world. It will be a good test for him on the clay.
Q. What do you think about what Lleyton Hewitt is doing this week?
ANDY MURRAY: Yeah, well, it's great. Yeah, I mean, I practice with him quite a lot. Spent quite a bit of time with him over the grass court season. He works hard. He loves competing. You know, he hasn't been fit. He's been injured for the last few years. So now that he's fit again, he has a chance to win those matches. He's a great player. People are quick to write guys off and not kind of remember how good someone like Hewitt was at his peak. He finished No. 1 in the world two times at the end of the year, won a couple of Grand Slams, and has been in the finals of others. When he's fit and healthy, he can compete with everybody.
Q. Last few days, a lot of people talking about a possible Federer/Nadal quarterfinal. A lot of attention on this Williams/Stephens match. Do you quite like that, the fact that you are perhaps being slightly a bit more under the radar than you would've been otherwise?
ANDY MURRAY: Again, I mean, I haven't really noticed any of the years thinking that I'm front page news. It's very different to Wimbledon, obviously, for me. Yeah, in some ways it's nice, but I don't really think it makes a whole lot of difference to how I play. I've played some of my best tennis at Wimbledon over the last five, six years. It's more the buildup to the tournament that I've always said is hard. Once the tournament gets started, it's a bit easier.
Q. I believe you have been visiting a mental conditioner in Fort Lauderdale; is that correct?
ANDY MURRAY: A mental conditioner? A sports psychologist?
Q. Yes, that will do.
ANDY MURRAY: I haven't seen a sports psychologist since March.
Q. Since March?
ANDY MURRAY: Yeah.
Q. May I have the name, please?
ANDY MURRAY: I know her first name is Alexis.
Q. You don't know the second name?
ANDY MURRAY: No.
Q. I've only been covering for a few months. It strikes me you get asked more personal questions than any player I've seen, mostly from the media from your country, about toilets and mental conditioners. Do you feel like that, that you get sort of a microscope over you that maybe other players from other places do not?
ANDY MURRAY: Yeah, I mean, a lot of times in matches, like at the Australian Open this year, you know in the second set tiebreak a feather came onto the court. A lot of people were asking me after the match and making out like that feather was the reason for why I went to the toilet before the fourth set of the final last year, and that was the reason why. Everyone is always looking for the reasons why.
Q. Do you think that happens more with you than others?
ANDY MURRAY: I don't know. I don't sit in the others' press conferences. I know the real reason why I've done well and win is because I work hard and I train hard. You know, all those other things are just extra bits and pieces. But the reason why guys do well is not when they go to the toilet or whether there's a bit of rain or feathers or whatever. It's down to hard work and having good people around you.
Q. Denis Istomin next. He's coached by his mum. That seems unusual on the ATP Tour.
ANDY MURRAY: Yeah. I mean, I think on both tours it is. There's not loads of people that get coached by their parents. A lot of them do from a young age, but not so much when they're on the tour. Obviously it works for him. Technically he's very sound. He's a good player. He hits the ball very flat. He served extremely well today I think in his match. I saw some of the stats at the end. Yeah, he's played well. He had a very good match with Novak in Montréal. He's had some good wins this week, as well.

In the week before the US Open, Djokovic asked Wojtek Fibak to work with him as a coaching consultant. A former top ten player from the 1970s, Fibak mentored the young Ivan Lendl during his own journey from flaky ingénue to worldbeater.
"The main reason is that Andy Murray has Ivan as his coach," Fibak told Telegraph Sport.
"And they thought because I worked with Ivan and I created the Lendl machine, that obviously I know Ivan. They probably wanted a counterbalance to what Ivan is doing with Andy.
"The other reason is that Novak Djokovic didn’t perform up to his expectations in terms of not winning Wimbledon, not winning the French Open.
"In the Wimbledon final, Novak was winning all the time and leading practically all the sets but he lost all the important points. That’s certainly Ivan’s influence. Now they took me to try to narrow that."
In an interview published in these pages in June, Fibak described how he had set out to turn Lendl into an armour-plated warrior, an opponent with no chinks in his game nor weaknesses in his mind or body. He succeeded so well that Lendl won eight grand slams.

"At the start of the fourth, an absence of stewards meant fans returned to their seats in an annoying dribble that again interrupted the rhythm of the match. Q. It seemed like your back or something was bothering you in the first set when you lost. Were you physically okay?
ANDY MURRAY: I'm just a bit stiff today. It was extremely cold on the court, very windy. Often when you sort of heat up and then, you know, sometimes in between sets or if you have quite a long break, you know, with the wind, you cool down pretty quickly. It was very, very different conditions the last few days where it's been very humid and you have been sweating a lot. It was very cold out there today.
Q. Night match on Ashe, but was it one you could enjoy tonight or just feel it was one you have to get through?
ANDY MURRAY: I mean, yeah, I wanted to just try and get through the match. In the end it was difficult conditions. It was extremely windy today. With the way he plays, he hits the ball pretty big and flat on both sides, you know, strokes pretty low, hard at times to control. He made it very difficult for me. With the way the third set ended up going, I was just very happy to get it done, because, you know, he had chances at the end of the third set to go ahead.
Q. Is it fun to defend your first Grand Slam title or is it pressure or both?
ANDY MURRAY: No, I haven't felt a huge amount of difference once the tournament started. I have been saying all week it was all different the week beforehand doing some extra things, and, you know, was a bit anxious about it around the weekend because I played my first match very late. I just literally wanted to get on the court and play at that stage. I wasn't really thinking about anything else. I just wanted to go out and play, and I haven't thought about it since.
Q. You have made slow starts the last three matches. Are you concerned at all about that?
ANDY MURRAY: I mean, I lost obviously a set in a tiebreak today, and I could have won that set. I mean, I would have liked to have maybe started a bit quicker. But, I mean, I don't think in the matches before I started that slow. I mean, I won both of the sets, and I wasn't in danger really of losing either of them at any stage. I wasn't breaks down or anything like that. You know, today was tough. It was tricky, and I'm just glad I got through in the end.
Q. Is your serve working the way you'd like?
ANDY MURRAY: Again, it depends. I mean, you have to do what you can with what the conditions are. When it's windy, serving is trickier. I lost my serve how many times tonight in four sets?
Q. Twice.
ANDY MURRAY: Twice? I mean, that's not terrible. The round before I don't think I lost my serve against Mayer, and the round before that maybe once. I think I would like to be serving a little bit harder, but it's not always
Q. But that's dictated by the conditions.
ANDY MURRAY: Sometimes, yeah. I mean, if you're not comfortable on serve you're going to take some pace off of it. But the way it was tonight, try and give yourself a bit more margin.
Q. You have been really consistent at reaching the quarterfinal stage. How much confidence does it give you when you get into matches like this?
ANDY MURRAY: I think now hopefully I'll start playing a little bit better from now on. I mean, sometimes the first week of a slam, you know, I've played very well. Sometimes you maybe feel like there's a little bit something to lose. I don't know. But I'm in the quarterfinals of a slam. It's not an easy thing to do, and the matches are going to get tougher. I'll have to up my game.
Q. What's the key against Stan? When you play Stan, what's the key for you?
ANDY MURRAY: I'll need to play a good match. He's improved I think this year quite a bit. Some of the things he didn't do so well before he's improved. So he has less weaknesses. You know, he's more experienced now. You know, he has a very good backhand. He serves well. You know, he's solid up at the net. He makes a lot of returns. He makes it very tricky for you. He's a top player. It will be a very tough match for me.
Q. He said you practice quite a bit. Anything different in him, maybe his confidence or his demeanor this year?
ANDY MURRAY: Yeah, I don't know exactly why. I don't know if he's, you know, working harder. He made a coaching change around the clay court season, you know, which may have helped him because he was without a coach for quite a while. That could have helped him a bit. You know, the match he had with Novak in Australia beginning of the year, that could have also attributed to it, as well. There are a lot of things that go into it. But, you know, he hasn't changed any of his strokes technically or anything. You'd expect most of it to be confidence.
Q. What did you think when you saw Federer went down?
ANDY MURRAY: I was practicing at the same time, so I didn't get to see that much of it. That was obviously surprising. He had won against Tommy I think ten times in a row, so surprising result for him. But like I think a lot of players go through periods where they're not playing their best tennis, and that's obviously been the case with Roger, you know, since around probably Wimbledon time. He had a few issues with his back this year, as well. He's still hitting the ball well. He still has the same strokes. It's just when you lose a few matches you're supposed to win, then you lose a little bit of confidence. That's huge in this game.
Q. How big is confidence, is the belief that you can beat everybody, and when other players believe they don't have a chance almost against you?
ANDY MURRAY: Yeah, it's very important. If someone goes on the court not thinking they can win against you, then the match is as good as done. When they believe that you could win, in an individual sport when you're just playing against one person, if you believe you can beat him and they don't have a very good day, then you can cause an upset. It's as simple as that.
Q. Davis Cup team named today. Looks like you're scheduled to play maybe three days in a row. Did you want to play doubles?
ANDY MURRAY: It depends on the first day. I won't play if, you know, I have a four or five hour match, because we have guys that are good enough to step in and play and win. We have a lot of very good doubles players. You know, there still can be changes made to the team between now and then. We'll see. But if I'm fit and, you know, fresh after the first day, and me and Colin obviously played well a few weeks ago, I think that would be the best chance to win the match.
Q. Question about squash. Am I right you supported the bid to get squash back into the games?
ANDY MURRAY: Yeah.
Q. What was your reason for that?
ANDY MURRAY: Well, I played it a little bit when I was younger. I used to play at our local sports club. We had two squash courts. I used to go and watch my dad playing, you know, club matches. I mean, I like it. I think it's a tough sport. I think physically it's very challenging. I could be wrong, but I think why it's not on TV as much is because it almost seems like the same point is getting played. It's maybe not the best spectator sport, but it's a very difficult sport to play. You have to be extremely fit, have very good hand/eye coordination, good feel, and good touch. It's another racquet sport. You know, when you play one, you like to tend to like to watch the other ones, as well. I love watching badminton, too.
Q. Wondered what you made of his shots through the legs.
ANDY MURRAY: Well, there was one of them in particular, yeah. The one where it kind of went over his head and he hit one. No, that's not really surprising, but I think it was maybe 5-4 in the first set when he had a pretty easy shot. I personally wouldn't try something like that at that stage, but he did, and, yeah, it was a bit surprising.

............
Q. Andy next. You must have good memories of playing him here 2010.
STANISLAS WAWRINKA: And some bad one on Arthur Ashe night session, too. Andy is a really good player. We practice a lot together. We had some great battle when we play each other. It's always usually some tough match against, but I like to play him. I like his game. I think if I start well, if I stay with him, I can have some good chance to do something.
Q. Have you ever been playing better when you have played him? Has it ever been as good as this going to a match like this against Andy?
STANISLAS WAWRINKA: No, I don't think so, but I think he's playing quite well in the Grand Slam, too, since last year. Last year won here and won Wimbledon. He's really confidence in five set match. Yeah, I just think to beat him I need to play my best tennis, that's for sure. I need to especially start well the match to show him that I'm going to be there.
Q. Who normally wins between you in practice?
STANISLAS WAWRINKA: Well, I don't practice too much, so I don't count.
Q. But does that help, the fact that you have practiced against him a lot? I know you have played him a lot, as well.
STANISLAS WAWRINKA: Yeah, I don't think it's help, because I know his game, he knows my game, and at the end of the day our match is completely different. Quarterfinal in Grand Slam, it's different pressure. So I don't think practice will help me or him.

Andy taking a battering from certain quarters of the British press today. It's absolutely disgraceful some of the writing. I notice it has even pushed Neil Harman, who is always so defensive of his colleagues to tweet
I know I'm going to be attacked for saying this but I've read observations on @andy_murray today that I find most depressing. A real shame
The article in the Telegraph from Oliver Brown is particularly disgusting.
The pressure Andy has to endure is unbelievable and unacceptable.

I know what to expect and avoid it. Journos are not in the business to support Andy. They are in the business to support themselves, normally by trying to make a name for themselves by the use of satire.

Q. Very tough day. What went on today?
ANDY MURRAY: I thought he played great. That was the hardest part of the match. 5-4 game in the first set was important game. I had a chance to close it out; he had quite a few chances. I made a few mistakes. But I mean, for the most part I didn't create break point chance, so he served well. He hit a lot of lines, was going for big shots, and he played too well.
Q. You haven't looked particularly comfortable all tournament. Have you felt like you sort of haven't been able to find your rhythm or your best tennis?
ANDY MURRAY: I mean, when it's breezy conditions I think everyone takes a bit of time to feel comfortable on the court. But I don't think I was playing poorly. I got to the quarterfinals of a slam, which isn't easy. I mean, I would have liked to have played a little bit better, but, you know, I have had a good run the last couple of years. It's a shame I had to play a bad match today.
Q. Was it his game? Your game?
ANDY MURRAY: I just said he played great. He hit big shots. He passed extremely well. He hit a lot of lines on big points. He served well. That was it. He played a great match.
Q. Does it make it harder when the guy keeps points so short? Was it one of those where you can't get any kind of rhythm?
ANDY MURRAY: No, I mean, it wasn't that. I mean, I thought there was a fair few long points, but I didn't get into enough return games, which is disappointing for me. That's normally something I do pretty well. I always give myself opportunities to break serve, and I didn't today.
Q. Has it been a little tougher perhaps than even you imagined to come off down from the kind of mountaintop of Wimbledon and get everything right, all the focus right after that big high?
ANDY MURRAY: No, it's not so much about focus. You know, when you work hard for something for a lot of years, you know, it's going to take a bit of time to really fire yourself up and get yourself training, you know, 110 percent. You know, that's something that I think is kind of natural after what happened at Wimbledon. But I got here. I mean, I have been here nearly three weeks now. I practiced a lot, and played quite a lot of matches, as well. So I gave myself a chance to do well because I prepared properly.
Q. Was there anything about the whole experience it was a new experience, defending a big title like this that perhaps it took you by surprise or anything about the whole thing that...
ANDY MURRAY: No, I don't think so. I would have thought maybe beginning of the tournament would have been the case. But, I mean, I think that had zero bearing on today's match. You know, it was my fifth match of the tournament, so, I mean, I thought I handled it okay. It was a new experience for me and something that was good to go through, and I will learn from that for next time.
Q. Did he throw anything tactically at you that you weren't expecting?
ANDY MURRAY: He served and volleyed a few times at the beginning of the match on some quite big points. On 30-all points and maybe a couple of deuce points, he did it. Apart from that, no, he just hit the ball extremely well today. So it was difficult to dictate too many of the points. And, you know, when he had the wind with him, he served very well and got the first strike in on the rally. I had to do a lot of defending from the far side of the court.
Q. Do you think the last 12 months have been more physically taxing or mentally taxing on you?
ANDY MURRAY: I mean, it's been challenging both ways for different reasons. I mean, physically I played some extremely tough matches in that period. You know, mentally, as well, it was very challenging for me to play you know, Wimbledon, the last few games of Wimbledon to you guys may not seem like much, but to me it was extremely challenging. Mentally, in terms of the matches I played, I mean, with Novak in Australia, last couple of years we have had some big matches here obviously. So, you know, a lot of work goes into not just those matches but the work you do to get yourself ready for them, as well. Yeah, that's tough.
Q. How difficult has the scheduling of your matches made it for you?
ANDY MURRAY: I don't really want to get into that. You guys can see for yourself how the schedule worked out. Yeah, when you play the first round over three days, it's tough.
Q. You have been incredibly consistent, as you said, at reaching the latter stages of Grand Slams. Does that make this more disappointing? How much does it motivate you?
ANDY MURRAY: Well, I don't know. If I'm meant to win every Grand Slam I play or be in the final, it's just very, very difficult just now. With the guys around us, it's very challenging. Like I say, I have played my best tennis in the slams the last two, three years. I mean, I lost today in straight sets, so that's disappointing. I would have liked to have gone further. But, look, I can't complain. If someone told me before the US Open last year I would have been here as defending champion having won Wimbledon and Olympic gold, I would have taken that 100 percent. So I'm disappointed, but, you know, the year as a whole has been a good one.
Q. First Grand Slam semifinal for Stan. When you see the way he played today, can you see him as a contender for these titles now?
ANDY MURRAY: I don't know. I know how hard they are to win. I have reached quite a few semis and finals before I did it. I don't know the answer to that. You'll find out in the next few days I guess.
Q. Do you think Davis Cup might be a good challenge for you now in two weeks' time, a good change from the Grand Slam scene?
ANDY MURRAY: I don't know. I mean, again, I'll see in 10 days or so, but, you know, I need to take a few days' rest and then get practicing on the clay courts and hopefully we can win the match.
Q. Just to clarify, aren't any kind of underlying physical issues you have been keeping quiet?
ANDY MURRAY: No.

Interesting article on the Rafa/Nole rivalry (http://espn.go.com/tennis/usopen13/story/_/id/9650684/main-event)
I can only think that his back has been an issue again this week in New York. It would certainly explain why his second serve was so ineffective, because to produce a good kick serve you have to arch your back and drive with your legs. Some of his second serves were coming in at 76mph, which gives the receiver a lot of time. I am pretty sure he was putting more oomph on that serve earlier in the year.

Fifty parting thoughts from the USO (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/tennis/news/20130909/us-open-50-thoughts-rafael-nadal-serena-williams/index.html)
Murray had the right attitude after his dismissal at the hands (or single hand) of Wawrinka in the quarterfinals: In the last 14 months, I've won Olympic gold and two Slams, including Wimbledon. Save your tears for someone else. Still, what a forgettable summer hard-court run for Murray.
sorry, for me much of that article is spot on, eg " Showing your opponents that you're emotionally still a bit of a baby merely serves to encourage them. Be a man. Your own man. "

It's insulting and disrespectful that you can support such a scurrilous article. Andy always has and always will show his frustration on court, it's who he is and he's not going to change and if it angers you then why do you apparently support him? I'm sure there's a Nadal forum where your comments on Andy will be appreciated.

rafa, last night, as ever, is impassive, just gets up, gets on with it: I'd like andy acting like that tooAndy is different from Nadal. He has always shown his emotions during a match as he hates making errors and always wants to play his best. Many other players have busted raquets and have not had this bile poured on them by hack journalists. What Andy has achieved while under the most awful pressure is absolutely fantastic. May I politely remind you that we on here love Andy and appreciate how he plays and to agree that he is "emotionally still a bit of a baby" is really not on. He certainly isn't. He's a man in my eyes and a good one at that.

I dont read the reports when Andy suffers a loss, know with previous form what to expect.
Just for the record Andy is NOT Rafa or Novak or Roger, he is Andy and that is why i support him, he is a brilliant and emotional player
and I love watching him. If i liked the style of others ie the impassiveness of Rafa then i would be a Rafa fan(.actually i dont agree that rafa is impassive, i'm just making an example)
Having said that I like to watch others ie Novak , Juan Martin, Rafa , Daveed and quite a few others , but I am first and foremost an
Andy fan. I think hes brilliant and win or lose i will always support him.
Erm.....does somebody keep removing my post.....thanks!:)
Sorry Lynne, that was me, that video is already in 2 other threads so I was just tidying up. Apologies, I should have let you know sooner.
Sorry...I did not know that it had been posted in two other threads as I haven't read those threads....I just came straight to here to post....but like you said it would of been nice to be told then I wouldn't of thought I was going :barmy::)

Yes I think it was - I wish he would expand....
According to twitter, Andy was in the audience for "Mock the Week" which was recorded last night and will be broadcast on Thursday at 10pm. It's not clear if he was "picked out" like last time however.
I have just read this terrific article about this year's US Open : http://www.sbnation.com/longform/2013/9/17/4736820/rafael-nadal-us-open-tennis-2013-comeback
Ignore the title - it's not all about Rafa at all. She analyses the four main contenders for the title and the most important matches that were played. There is quite a lot about Andy, all of which is sensitive & complimentary. In fact, she treats all the players very respectfully, with the exception of Djokovic whom she obviously doesn't like. There is one paragraph which is highly critical of him which she might have done better to leave out. But the article on the whole is very well written and well worth reading.

He could not have spoken more glowingly about Andy Murray, saying that Murray is very friendly and once initiated a 15-minute conversation with him.

love it
But in the seven other attribute categories that make up a celebrity’s score — appeal, aspiration, breakthrough, endorsement, influence, trend setter and trust — Murray leads the way among the Big Four. That is an unexpected result, considering Murray has far fewer championships than the other three and has a reputation for being mercurial on the court.
For example, Murray ranks 1,043 spots higher than Federer in appeal, which measures a celebrity’s likability.
Murray’s median score in the aspiration category is 74.84, which is comparable to Giants quarterback Eli Manning, golfer Phil Mickelson and Golden State Warriors guard Stephen Curry, among other athletes. The aspiration category measures the degree people feel the celebrity has a life to which they would aspire. Murray’s score puts him 112th out of 3,082 celebrities in the database.
In influence, which measures how the celebrity affects brand consideration and purchase intent, Murray’s median score of 71.93 ranks him with the Los Angeles Clippers star Blake Griffin and Yankees closer Mariano Rivera.
