I just looked and there are only a few words with auto-censor and they are not replaced with asterisks (but alternative words) so I have not idea why that has happened to Cazza's post.
:suspect:

I thought it was interesting listening to one of Andy's interviews (not sure which one but I think it was sound only) when he said that he would be prepared to bet his winnings from Cincinatti that Fed, Rafa and Novak would all be fully fit and recovered for the US Open.
He's not kidding himself, and he's not letting anyone think that it could be an easier ride for him.

Having said that.....I've got a feeling it could happen this year

Thanks for the links everyone.

I too thought it interesting to hear Andy being so certain that Fed, Rafa and Novak would be fully fit for the Open and I'm sure that he's totally right! Still, at this point in time, Andy is in the best shape and I'm sure he'll be fully prepared come next week. It's going to be interesting to say the least!

Are people aware that there's a link button in the post a reply box?

If you click that and place in the url, you can then enter a click-able label/title for links instead of seeing the whole url

I couldn't get that to work.

In what way?

I had a little play with it and it seemed to work ok.

Click the button that says 'link' (http://andymurray.forumotion.com/t23-newspaper-thread), the full URL goes in the top box, the title/description in the bottom one.

There's also a button for embedding videos, which could be useful :)

I dont like it when Andy is favoured to win either , but hopefully hes keeping away from all this , and staying focused on what he needs to do.
Im cautiously optimistic , well thats what Im saying anyway but deep down Im SO EXCITED !!!

It certainly seems from all those reports as though a lot of people are tipping Andy for the title! So I just checked the odds at bet365 and they still have Nole as favourite, with Rafa 2nd and Andy a very close 3rd. Fed in 4th.

Andy has just denied being best man to Nole. They still do not even know if Nole is getting married.

Really? I thought he announced just after Wimbledon that he is getting married?

Where did Andy deny it?

Maybe they do not know the date or something.

sample "There were moments in the three hours and 23 minutes of his 6-7, 2-6, 6-2, 6-0, 6-4 win over the Dutchman when his head-shaking, swearing persona accurately reflected the standard of his tennis. He had every right to be furious with his maddening inconsistency and loss of concentration. Yet he redeemed himself with the most exhilarating fightback and a closing few games that reached new levels of tension, as Murray held his nerve and Haase cracked, physically as well as mentally."

i like andy in red, and according to a recent Horizon programme, red is an aggressive colour, a winner's colour.
and the fist pumps, the come ons etc, hopefully not too much swearing! better for andy to play naturally, it gets the crowd into it, and it's andy's way, rather than having a 'game face' and showing nothing

Really? I thought he announced just after Wimbledon that he is getting married?

Where did Andy deny it?

He said it yesterday in his pre-match Petch interview. The story was in a Serbian newspaper - Andy reckoned it was a joke about the fact that he is always runner-up to Nole. He said he'd heard nothing about Novak getting married and that he would ask him about it.

Thanks NL. It would have made more sense for the Serbian newspaper to make the joke about Rafa, 'cos he's the one who's lost to Nole so many times this year!

did what he had to
i listened to this on bbc 5live, jon overend, john law? and mats wilander.
who said 'andy is a born entertainer' after one outrageous winner. when pressed he said 'andy is one who likes the show, playing on a big court under the lights, likes to give the crowd their money's worth, that's why they like him here'
on the radio it sounded so one sided, as if lopez hadn't showed up, radio coms proposing mock fines for him when he played particularly stupid shots.
looking forward to the replays today, guardian report makes it pretty exciting - a thrilling first set etc

today's report of a disappointing game kevin mitchell (http://www.guardian.co.uk/sport/2011/sep/11/us-open-2011-nadal-beats-murray)
sample highlight "there were passages in this match when the unfamiliar sight of Murray at the net changed the whole mood of the contest. Remarkably for one of the game's defensive masters, Murray moved into that high-risk, high-reward zone 44 times, winning the point on 33 of his visits.

It is a strategy he as consistently rejected throughout his career. Murray strives to contain his emotions but relying solely on control and discipline not only makes for a one-dimensional game but can suck the life out of his tennis when what he needs is a dramatic moment to lift himself to another level.

The other dimension to playing a more expansive, even emotional, game is that it engages the crowd – and on Saturday night, large sections of the Arthur Ashe stadium were behind him."

Love his attitude!

Thanks AA - great to hear Andy so positive and why shouldn't he? 4 semi-finals or better in the last 4 GS tournaments - the only other player to have done that this year is Djokovic. Good, too, to see that he has set himself a goal for the end of the year - hopefully it will give him focus now that the Majors have finished.

This article says more or less the same thing:

Inevitable, I suppose. But I do think it is so unfair to point out that Rafa etc all play Davis Cup - Spain, France, Serbia have all got strength in depth if necessary. If GB are going to win their ties it means Andy absolutely has to win his 2 singles.
Pressure or what ????

Cazza if you want to merge this with yours..no probs :D

With both Rafa and Novak obviously against the DC scheduling and Rafa virtually threatening a boycott, it just may take the pressure off Andy.

He obviously enjoys playing when he is fit but these guys have such a horrendous schedule, and it obviously caught up with him yesterday. When I think that footballers get upset if they have to play twice in a week for 90 minutes I could scream.

How serious is Andy Murray's tennis strike threat? (http://www.guardian.co.uk/sport/2011/sep/20/andy-murray-tennis-strike-threat)

Oh dear. Why do I get the feeling that our beloved national press is going to brand Andy as a trouble maker and leader of the 'we will strike' faction.

This was first mentioned by Rafa and ARod; when Andy has been asked about it he only confirmed that it was a possibility that he hoped could be avoided.

With each new report they seem to have him more and more in strike mode - more reasons to pillory him. They just cant leave him alone

I totally agree with you LC. Andy really just said it as it is, including that hopefully a strike can be avoided, but lots of the headlines seem to imply he is the leader.

I agree, this is so incredibly annoying - I wouldn't mind betting that Rafa doesn't have to put up with the same sort of treatment from the Spanish press.

David Lloyd's piece speaks volumes about him - green-eyed and monster are the words that spring to mind. On the main tour circuit, when the game was much less physical than it is now, he reached a career high of 128, won 24 matches and lost 55 - I don't think he has any idea what it was like for the top players then let alone now!

thanks cazza.
the last post has an update on Soderling, missing the whole Asian swing, mono. and Federer, missing Shanghai, nagging injuries, plus he's tired.

The commentators on the women's tennis were having a sly dig comparing the number of matches McEnroe and Sampras played in a year. And you would think that Andy had come up with this idea of a strike all by himself and that no other players were concerned

I reckon as soon as they get the smallest snippet of information they rub their hands in glee 'Lets analyse this as much as we can in the hopes of being able to have a dig at Andy'
I cant believe it sells papers but they obviously think it does - sickening

Besides - peeps seem to be managing OK without 'thanks' which we've lived without for about 6 months now.

From http://blogs.tennis.com/thewrap/2011/10/the-good-hands-club.html

Murray came to Bangkok with a calmer sense of determination than we normally see from him. It was the determination of a favorite, of a big name who knows the tournament is his to win (as opposed to his to lose). Murray played with an air of authority, something he has generally lacked. Other than a second set hiccup against Gilles Simon, he was in command the whole way. The best sign may have been his attitude. Murray left New York admitting that he needed to be more positive. In the final in Bangkok against Donald Young, Murray showed that positivity even when he was well ahead. I kept hearing little grunts from his part of the court as he won a point; I assumed, on first listen, that they were incidental, the product of a shot he’d hit. But subsequent replays proved that, no, Murray was actually, deliberately urging himself on and pumping his fist. It didn’t appear natural, exactly—when you look in the dictionary for “upbeat,” you will never see a shot of Murray’s face—but it did look like he meant it. A positive Andy Murray? He could have a good fall.

Former Globe and Mail tennis writer, Tom Tebbutt, raises many fine points about the top ATP players' grumbles concerning the calendar in his latest Tennis Canada blog: (http://www.lovemeansnothing.ca/blog/union-talk-and-the-big-boys)
There has been a lot of discussion about the men players uniting to form a union.

Currently they are equal partners with the tournaments in the ATP World Tour, which began in 1990.

The four Grand Slam events operate separately, as does the Davis Cup competition, which is administered by the International Tennis Federation.

This all became an issue during the US Open when players like Rafael Nadal, Andy Murray and Andy Roddick voiced various beefs about the way the tour is run.

One was the fact that many players, including the top four of Novak Djokovic, Nadal, Roger Federer and Murray had to play Davis Cup just five days after the US Open ended, actually just four days for Djokovic and Nadal once the men’s final was delayed until Monday.

This was a bogus argument by the players because a few years ago 19 of the top 20 players (all except Tommy Robredo) requested that the yearly calendar be changed so that Davis Cup (the World Group semi-finals and the World Group Playoffs) would be moved from two weeks following Grand Slams to the week after they finish. The thinking was that players didn’t want to return home after an event like the US Open and then promptly have to get up and travel somewhere for Davis Cup. They preferred to go directly from New York to wherever they were playing.

For example, if you’re a European like Djokovic, Nadal or Murray and were playing in Argentina after the US Open, you didn’t want that week in between, you’d rather go directly to Argentina after the US Open. It would be the opposite for the Argentines playing in Europe, as it was for them two weeks ago in Serbia.

The players prattle on about the schedule being too long, but in 2012 it will be shortened by two weeks. Instead of ending on November 27 (except for the Davis Cup final from December 2-4) as it will this year, in 2012 the last event will be the ATP World Tour Finals ending on November 11 (except for Davis Cup from November 16-18).

Since only eight players, plus eight doubles teams, play in the World Tour Finals, that means that in 2012 most players will be finished any Tour commitments by November 4 at the very latest. That’s almost two months before the next year`s Australian Open lead-in events start – and it could be a pretty long period (eight weeks) for all but the big stars because most of them aren’t earning any money during the off season.

Even the big stars, unless they’re in the Davis Cup final, will have about seven weeks off. I think they will start getting pretty antsy with that much of a break, even if it’s filled with various types of exhibitions.

So, let’s wait until 2012 is over and done to see how much the players complain about not having enough time off at the end of the year.

Here are the three things the big boys of tennis should be campaigning for if they truly want to improve their working conditions.

1. Get an extra week between the French Open and Wimbledon. It’s absurd (and a health risk) that Rafael Nadal plays Queen’s Club on grass a couple of days after he wins Roland Garros on clay almost every year. Two weeks is totally inadequate between two such important events. Good news here: last week All England Club chairman Philip Brook said Wimbledon would be willing to consider three weeks between the two tournaments.

2. Get rid of the back-to-back semi-finals and finals at the US Open. Everyone knows CBS wants Saturday and Sunday for its ratings, but a fair competitive schedule should take precedence over financial considerations. The best players are usually playing the best players in the semi-finals and should not be expected to come back the next day for another best-of-five sets match in the final. There is no way, for example, that Djokovic and Nadal could have both played at the exhilarating level they did this year if they had not had a day off before the final.

3. The Grand Slams pay far too little to the players in prize money. This has been mentioned many times, but the other major sports pay 50 per cent or more of gross revenue to the athletes – at the Slams it is about 10 to 15 per cent. That’s grossly unfair to tennis professionals who have a limited career span. No matter that more prize money would cut into profits that are used to promote the game by the national associations involved, it could be doubled immediately and the players would still not be getting their fair share of the money they bring in.

Linda

It's interesting what he says about DC beginning the week after the USO and that the players themselves originally asked for that.

Linda
05-10-2011, 06:28
I would imagine that in the year they voted for that, most of the ties following USO were in the Americas so it seemed a nuisance to the players to either have to go home and back again, or stick around for an extra week. They didn't have the foresight to see what it would be like if they had to travel half way round the world to their tie. Also I guess at that time the USO final hadn't been delayed till Monday. Obviously this year we can see what it was like having to play Monday, having to travel to a very different time zone and having to play again on Friday, often on a different surface, and all five set matches. They really should have thought it through.

david1610
05-10-2011, 11:58
One of the problems about considering the "tennis year" is that it is a completely different year for the top players and the others.

Most players play one or two matches per tournament (by definition, only 25% of a draw play three matches or more in a tournament - excepting byes for a moment :) ), and so in GSs perhaps play 6-10 best of five set matches, whereas the top four have played 23-27 this year. The big four thus have an incredibly tough eight weeks of the year at GSs which must take it out of them. (Make it nine if you add the WTF which although best of three sets is still five matches against the other best players of the year). They compensate by playing fewer other tournaments.

The other top players tend to play more tournaments in the year and seemingly play a similar number of matches, but of course these are mainly best of three sets, and are more spread out throughout the weeks and months.

A problem arises when DC has to played by the very top players straight after a GS.

If Andy is very outspoken about this in Shanghai, I just hope he bears in mind that there are two clear "tennis years".

Not sure if this is the correct place for this but Sunday Mail are asking for nominations for Scottish Sports Awards 2011. If you want to vote for Andy go to www.sundaymailsportsawards.co.uk. They say in the article that the LTA have nominated the two Davis Cup ties at Braehead Arena in 2011 for Event of the Year and you can also vote for this.

wonderful report there, so i'm copying over a section, to entice viewers
" The abiding memories of this match will be of Murray’s sublime tennis, anchored by the backhand which, Djokovic-like, was both blinding in attack and solid as a rock. His returning took Nadal’s feet out from under him — the world No. 2 won a mere 43% of points behind his first serve for the match (he was 0 for 10 on first serve points in the final set)— and once he began to slap forehand winners seemingly at will from behind the baseline, it was all over."

"What's most encouraging is that when he's had big defeats before - and the US Open was a big defeat for him - it's taken him a while to get things back on track; and here he's come straight back and is playing the best tennis of his life.

Last week was the best I have ever seen him play. It's a great contrast with defeats that we've seen before, particularly at the Australian Open last year when it took him an age to get back. I think the consistency he has shown is admirable - it is nothing short of spectacular, the form he has shown. The third set against Nadal in Japan was the best I have ever seen him play against a top player.

He's doing what everyone's asked him to do for the last three years, which is really take it on against Nadal. The key was the second set, when he turned it around. He got the compromise just right there, between attack and defence. He lifted his own game and began to play breathtaking tennis; he picked the right moments to hit the right shots."

I just posted this on the Rafa thread but as it could affect all the non-British top players, I'm putting it here as well:

There was an article in today's Times (can't post link as don't have a subscription, and you wouldn't be able to read it either unless you have a subscription) by Neil Harman, of course, explaining the situation. Under the new UK tax rules, a foreign sportsman appearing in an event in this country does not only have to pay tax on his earnings from that event as you would expect, but also has to pay tax on all his international sponsorship income, in proportion to the time spent here. So an athlete who spends one week competing in this country has to pay UK tax on 1/52 of all his earnings from all sponsorships from companies all around the world, although he would already have been taxed on those in his own country and also possibly in the country of the sponsor (subject to international tax agreements). In the case of Rafa at Queens, the amount of tax he would have to pay would be considerably more than his earnings from the tournament, even if he won the tournament. So he would effectively make a loss by coming here.

This is really worrying. Why would top sportsmen come to this country at all? Would players be willing to come to play the WTF? Or Wimbledon? And it affects all sports, not just tennis. Foreign football teams, for instance, might be put off coming here.

NB apparently there is a one-off exclusion for the Olympics, so that the Olympic competitors will not have to pay the tax.

Thank you for that Linda - this would appear to be a ridiculous state of affairs calculated to discourage any of the top sportsmen from playing in Britain. I'm sure it will have a negative effect on all sports including golf and athletics which have high profile meetings in the U.K. Surely the various sports associations will have to try to do something about this.

There's another article about it in today's Times. Apparently this tax was brought in three or four years ago (so Rafa has had to put up with making a loss at Queens each year as he was contracted to them until this year) and other athletes and events have already been deterred. They quoted various complaints, including Usain Bolt.

Tennis.com has a lengthy journal on Shanghai. (http://blogs.tennis.com/thewrap/2011/10/shanghai-journal-1013.html) The following is just the bit about Andy:

What about Andy Murray? The questions seem to be what they always seem to be at this time of year: Is he for real? Do these fall wins mean anything for his Slam chances? The track record isn’t good. Murray dominated the fall a few years ago and came to Melbourne the prohibitive favorite, only to get sick and lose early. He won Shanghai last year and then went down in flames in the Aussie final.

If I didn’t know better, though, I'd say that Murray’s win over Nadal in Tokyo had the makings of a game-changer. First, he finally seems to have absorbed the lessons that Novak Djokovic has taught us about how to play Nadal. Murray stood on the baseline and used his backhand like a forehand to move Rafa and defuse his topspin. Second, unlike at Wimbledon, where one errant forehand caused him to go back into his defensive shell, Murray kept pushing forward even after losing the first set. He has been undecided about how to play Rafa lately, but this time he tried to win with his forehand and with aggression, and he was rewarded for it. If he can’t carry that plan into his next match with Rafa at a major, he’ll never win one.

As for Murray’s sketchier win over Stan Wawrinka today, it reminded me of something former Chicago Bulls coach Phil Jackson once said about his wild man player Dennis Rodman. The Zen Master believed that Rodman, over the course of a season, would build up some “weird energy” that had to come out in some way. The same seems true for Murray. He was coming off two straight tournament wins and he had won the first set over Wawrinka, but when the second started Murray needed to let out some weird negative energy of his own. For the first time, he started to look at his player box. Then he started to yell at it. Then he started to play poorly. Then he started to curse. Then he started to pull his clothes. But when the third set began, it was gone, and he made a point of trying to fire himself up again.

For now, I won’t worry about Murray’s Slam chances when he’s picking up the slack for the rest of the Big 4 in the fall.

It's a shame that even Andy's current great run of form has to be marred by negative comments such as these in a typical Steve Tignor article.
I like to view it in a little more positive light than just 'picking up the slack'

Mickey
15-10-2011, 09:33
Toatally agree Fina, some of the press will never recognise the form Andy is in at the moment, and which I feel he will take into next year. Nole was accused of bottling, but looked at what happened after the Davis Cup, it only needs a catalyst to set the ball rolling, and once the player has found their confidence then they are able to meet all the challenges and play well in difficult situations. It's all about self belief and the aura that sends out to their opponents.

I have been occasionally irritated by remarks by commentators who seem to think that when Federer and Djokovich are back everything will be different. Almost a case of "while the cat's away, the mice will play" where everyone else can then go back to being understudies. Djokovich, maybe, assuming his back gets better and even then he will be rusty, but what exactly has Federer done this year that constitutes such a threat, especially to Andy in particular who is in such great form.

But how long will it be before the knockers and some of the tennis press will be pointing out that only the absence of the Joker and Fed has made this possible. The Sky link man already hinted at it by drawing attention to the quality of Andy's opponents! Further to the tax topic, here is what someone posted on another forum (using Usain Bolt as an example):

I can't find the article right now, but I read recently that Ryder Cup is having trouble recruiting big name golfers to play in Britain due to the same tax issues causing Rafa not to renew his contract with Queen's.

It was explained very clearly using Usain Bolt as an example. If Bolt runs 10 races per year, but only one race in the UK, the British govt. extracts tax on 1/10 or 10% of his income from his endorsement deals @the rate of 50%. So, if Usain earns, for example, $40 million in deals with Nike & Gatorade, the UK govt. would tax 10% of that income, which equals $4 million, @a rate of 50% which equals 2 million dollars. This is for one day of competition that Bolt raced in the UK.

The other galling point is the British govt. does not send the athletes a bill. They take the tax money directly from the earnings at the competition. So, for instance if Bolt was paid an upfront $1 million appearance fee at his one UK race, and earns another half million for winning, the British government would step in and take his checque for taxes from the finance offices of the event before the money ever passed to Bolt's hands or bank account. According to this formula, Bolt would make zero income @the event, yet still owe Britain another half million dollars in tax.

Britain would also like to be able to collect 50% tax on Bolt's competition earnings so he'd owe even more money, but since Jamaica & Britain have a treaty where a person is not required to pay taxes to both governments, the tax man can't get his hands on a cut of Bolt's competition earnings.

Obviously, since Bolt's endorsement earnings are ginormous, he refuses to race in the UK anymore.

Flabbergasting. Why should somebody who is not a resident of the UK be expected to fork over any portion of money he's earned through companies that are not based in Britain? What is the rationale? Bolt doesn't have children in school in Britain. He doesn's use British roads except for a few days a year when he's racing. Why on Earth would he be expected to pay the UK $2 million dollars?

JAMES4578
16-10-2011, 20:49
According to The Sunday Times Ministers are considering whether to reduce or remove the endorsements tax. However any change is not imminent as giving tax breaks to millionaire sports stars is not a priority in the current economic climate. They're currently looking at tax relief for local community sports clubs.

I have just amended post 125 above, with the correct url for the BBC - Jonathan Overend's blog.

An extract.

"He feels a better player than this time last year, and he looks it. He feels more confident after winning four titles from his last five, and he looks it.

This time last year nobody predicted that Novak Djokovic, with only slight tweaks to his game, would suddenly become a world-beating super power. We are surely not too hung up on Murray's perceived failings to regard him any less capable than Novak to do something similar.

Of course it's almost impossible for Djokovic's annus-miraculous to be repeated, but Murray doesn't need revolution. These successes in Bangkok, Tokyo and Sanghai are part of the evolution, with experience gained and confidence increased, towards something bigger in Melbourne, Paris, London or New York."

It made me livid to read a comment in the middle of an otherwise positive article by Stuart Bathgate in The Scotsman yesterday:

'Although Murray is still only 24 and may well compete in another 30-40 Slams, even Djokovic's tally already looks uncatchable. In other words, when a line is drawn under the careers of all four (Roger, Rafa, Nole & Andy) a decade or so from now, the careers of the other three will be seen as greater than Murray's.'

How can he possibly know that - does he have a crystal ball? While it may well be the case that Andy ends up with fewer Slam victories than the other three at the end of his career, he could well go into 2012 and win all 4 and be the first of them to achieve the year 'Grand Slam'. It seems as though even in praising Andy some jounalists have to find a negative comment - infuriating!!

Independent (http://www.independent.co.uk/sport/tennis/murray-needs-wise-old-head-to-make-major-breakthrough-2372062.html) - Murray needs wise old head to make major breakthrough
"Murray is particularly pleased with how well he is feeling physically at this stage of the season. He has changed his diet this year – he avoids all food containing wheat and cow's milk – and feels much better for it. Despite the exertions of the last three weeks, during which he won 13 matches in 18 days, Murray said his only problems were a few blisters and sore feet.

"My body feels 50 per cent better than it did this time last year in terms of pain, stiffness, little niggles," he said. "Last year I remember finishing here. You always feel good when you win a tournament, but when you get back on the practice court, things are sore. Also when I finished at the O2 the last two years, I've been so, so sore. I did play a really long match with Rafa last year and that didn't help. But I feel completely different [this year].""

Poor boy, he's just won 3 tournaments in 3 weeks (4 if we count the doubles) and it's still possible to write an article like that about him...

Don't know about which part should I laugh the most, Andy winning against tired, end-of-season players (of course Andy himself hasn't played a match this year, only prepared himself for these 3 weeks) or when he calls Andy's season dismal (let's count together, 1 GS final, 3 GS semis, 5 tournament victories including 2 masters... yeah, that was just soooo bad!).

An interesting article after a couple of nonsense points in the first paragraph although this was seemingly setting up what was to follow. Also Andy was not being negative about his career in slams. The comment, I feel, was aimed at those who judge HIM negatively based on slam results. Overall though it was good to see Andy finally given credit for sticking with the job in hand in an era where it would have been so easy to have given up. Although why it has taken so long for such recognition to appear in any publication is beyond me.

ATP site (http://www.atpworldtour.com/News/Tennis/2011/10/Features/FedEx-Reliability-Career-Indoor-Records.aspx) - FedEx Reliability Zone: Indoor Records

"Three current ATP World Tour stars -- Swiss Roger Federer (No. 6), Scot Andy Murray (No. 8) and Swede Robin Soderling (No. 11) -- all rank highly in the all-time indoor list, according to the FedEx ATP Reliability Index. Each player hails from generally cold climates, where playing indoors was a regular part of their tennis education.

Federer, a winner of 16 indoor titles, has won almost one quarter of his career matches (792-186, .815) on indoor courts (198-51, .795), but Murray and Soderling have claimed a higher percentage of all their match wins indoors than outdoors. World No. 3 Murray is .791 indoors (87-23) and .740 outdoors (234-82), while Soderling is a remarkable .740 indoors (114-40) and .600 outdoors (196-130). The World No. 6 has won seven of his 10 trophies indoors."

From Jon Wertheim's mailbag (SI): (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2011/writers/jon_wertheim/10/26/mailbag/1.html)

Isn't Andy Murray the Caroline Wozniacki of the men's Tour? Dominates when the top guns are not deployed, teasing his fans into believing that he's ready to end the British drought with a Slam victory.
-- Jason Carrick, Bronx, N.Y.

• As I've noted before, there are similarities. They both can tend to be excessively defensive players. For all their success at Masters Series and Tier 1 events, neither (obviously) has won a Slam. Oh, and they both wear Adidas.

But the comparison is a bit simplistic. Murray is trying to break through during one of the best generations ever, behind a triumvirate that has won all but one major since February 2005. In Wozniacki's case, she is Slam-less in a much softer era, yet still holds the top ranking. Much different dynamic.

MurrayAOne
26-10-2011, 21:06
That's a ridiculous comparison and as I see it yet another negative comment toward Andy. As far as Wozniacki is concerned I think they should leave her alone. She plays her matches just like everyone else and if results put her at no 1 then so be it slam or no slam. Oh yes and there is another comparison...she has strings in the middle of her racquet - just like Andy.

I am well known in our two locals for defending Andy. And the funny thing is I go out about once every 2 months. Next time I visit will probably be on Remembrance Sunday and if anybody says a word against him I'm ready. Funny thing is somebody else always brings up the subject of Andy....'cos I'm there! Otherwise I wouldn't say a word.

A swiss journalist has tweeted that Andy is playing in Basel. I hope they will have him as seeded 2 and then Federer will be #3. perhaps that's why he has gone there instead of Valencia.

I remember Andy missing Davis Cup in Glasgow with a virus. When he turned up in Canada about 10 days later he didn't look great. He had lost quite a bit of weight and there was speculation that he was suffering from mono.

That is what I thought too, so they either have it wrong or they know something we don't (Andy does not always tell us at the time of injuries etc). I am assuming they have it wrong.

Maybe this is the wrong place for this comment. Did anyone see the tweet today from a Christian Buerges (sp?) a Swiss journo, quoted RF as saying "Murray will win one [GS]" as opposed to Rafa winning more, and Nole winning more? Maybe I'm too sensitive, but that comment about Andy struck me as typical of why I've never viewed Fed as being "gracious" and why his attitude's always annoyed me. Maybe it's just psychological warfare too. Don't think anyone can look into a crystal ball and predict how many GS someone's going to win, or not win.

"Murray said that he woke up around 3am on Tuesday with the pain in his buttock.

“I was struggling to walk,” said Murray. “I had trained twice on Monday and felt fine after that. It was a bit better later on Tuesday morning and I went to a pool for some exercises and had a light hit. But this morning I knew it was still not good enough. "

"The Scot said that his personal physio and doctor suspect the problem might be linked to the sciatic nerve.

Murray said he would travel to Paris on Thursday and take four or five days off with anti-inflammatory treatment in hopes of being fit for the final event of the regular ATP season, the Paris Masters, which starts on Monday. "

This interview shows what a really nice guy Andy is, how considerate of the spectators, organisers and Marco C.
